Hi,
I recently flashed to the base Gingerbread ROM released on 3/30. Ever since flashing to this ROM, my battery is rapidly dying. When I go into the battery usage monitor, I see that a process called "com.motorola.contacts" is listed as using 70% + of the battery. Under this process I see a bunch of packages bundled in such as:
Calendar Service
Contacts Storage
Rich Clipboard
Accounts Storage
Motorola Storage Monitor
MOTOBLUR Indexing Service
ContactsData
Email Engine
Contacts Sync
Yahoo Contacts
Contacts
Social Messaging Service
Dialer
MS Exchange Service
Policy Manager Service
Policy Manager Service
Admin Notifier
This process is killing my battery. Any ideas on remedies for this?
Thanks.
Which accounts do you have logged in? Start removing all but your Google account and adding back slowly to see which one is the problem. I only have a Google account setup (Facebook & Twitter too, but only by their apps - not Blur), and I'm getting tremendous battery life on GB. Not a lot of use yesterday, but I hit 70% remaining on the Moto extended battery after 23 hours.
The only accounts I have setup are facebook and gmail. . . I deleted and readded my gmail account, which seems to have alleviated the power issue, however, the gmail account is now hardly pushing any mail.

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem, and am trying to decide if I can remove some of those apps. I have 2 email accounts, a mac.com one, and an exchange one. I've had them on Froyo with no problems at all. Battery life is almost 0.
Is there any way to find out what these apps do, and how essential they are? I am not sending or receiving that many messages; and it appears like maintaining the contact data base is using up a lot of energy--but there is nothing to it, really, it's static.
I have removed and replaced the corporate account many times, as I did have problems getting contacts to work properly-it only wanted to store 999 out of 2900 contacts. I finally added two by hand, and the remainder then downloaded. But, as part of the process, I deleted and reinstated the account many times. the Mac.com account is a basic IMAP account.

Alright so I had to remove my facebook account from my phone and put it back in - like countless other people the contacts aren't sync'ing. Here's what I've tried:
Removed facebook account from Accounts. Uninstalled Facebook app updates. Turned off phone. Logged into facebook on my PC and went into application settings and removed facebook mobile and samsung mobile access. Booted phone. Checked logs and saw "facebook_1.2.apk has changed ... unpacking" Rebooted phone. I went back into accounts and added Facebook account - still not syncing with the contacts. I opened the Facebook app and logged in. The facebook app gave itself an account in my Accounts & Sync (So now two facebook entries there) but the app will only pull contacts not the calendar. But it did put pics and link my contacts successfully.
So now you're probably thinking - problem solved albeit through 2 facebook accounts on the phone right? That's what I thought - one can do my calendar and one can do my contacts. However, I then discovered that for some reason the contact pictures aren't showing up in the messaging app - or anywhere else in the phone where they should (Except the Contacts app itself). So I started the whole process over again keeping a close eye on the logs to check for errors. Apparently for the contact pictures to populate to other parts of the phone, it needs to be done through SNS service. While trying to update the facebook account with the SNS setting (Not the one created by the FB App) and pouring over the logs I came across:
W/System.err(2437): at com.sec.android.app.sns.xml.parser.SnsXmlParser.parse(SnsXmlParser.java:73)
E/SNS_PARSER(2437): SnsXmlParser : xmlReader.parse() : SAXException occur
Parse method return false
So it would appear that the SNS service is to blame. The question then is... why is it broken? I'm wondering if this is something that happened through an MR. I've had the phone since launch and contact sync was never failure free (Unlike my HTC phones) but if you let it sit a few days it would magically work one day - well I've been sitting for a few days and it hasn't fixed itself yet so that's what started me on proactive approach.
Thoughts?
I called sprint about this problem yesterday and was pretty much told its probally something with facebook and not much they can do since its 3rd party...

Well the problem I have with that response is that the Facebook app itself will pull the contacts just fine. So the issue I believe is with the sns service - whether it's going to the wrong site on facebook to pull the contacts or whatever. Which would explain why it's not able parse anything, it's not getting anything to parse. But they won't touch it. I'm willing to bet it's Samsung related. This problem happens to other Galaxy S models also. Guess we're just s.o.l.

Has there been a fix for this yet, can I drop in the sns file from lets say evo ?
No issues here..if you use the facebook account sync option at the top and turn off the one that facebook installs then everything will work fine.
My issue is tha I can not join contacts with facebook ones, it does not sns account, only the one that comes default but even then I can not join contacts, even if I match them up

I'd say start over with a fresh factory default or wipe with clockwork mod. I've never had a facebook sync issue since the phone was released. Not an issue on the DK28 ones either.
I'd like to know about other people's experiences with CM6 and Exchange. With the stock email app, I have noticed at times that at times it would start using a lot of cpu, and stop receiving emails. I did have "all email" sync, but these issues would happen randomly after all of my mailbox was downloaded; could this have anything to do with it? I would have to reboot my phone for email to start working again. After reading about people's experience in the CM6 thread I thought it might be appropriate to have an altogether separate thread. I did notice some users having similar issues, and that TouchDown is a good alternative.
So about 2 weeks ago, I started trying it. Problem is, when I go to add a contact (discovered this by long pressing a number to create a contact), it will let me create a "TouchDown contact", but only with names. I contacted touchdown support and they said that no other applications can have access to TouchDown data for "security". I did put in a feature request for an optional contacts integration, because my Aria is a work phone, and every contact I add I *need* synced. I did think about adding contacts to Google account, and then installing Google/Outlook sync on my work pc, but this seems too convoluted.
Has CM6 exchange improved in any of the nightly builds? If I choose to go back to the stock email app, is there any way that if I run into these issues again I can provide debugging information? The only thing I really liked about TouchDown was the search email feature, but this is in no way a feature request for the stock email app. xD
Why not ask in the cm6 thread instead of starting a new one?
I've been using stock exchange mail client since the beginning of CM6 on aria, haven't ran into any major issues with it. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes the deleted email on aria still show up on desktop outlook.

Just wanted to add that stock client does stop getting emails ( very rarely for me), instead of rebooting, I just forse close the app and restart it again.

For adding/syncing contacts (using touchdown for email) I added the exchange account (under stock email settings) and set it to never check mail, but still sync contacts and calendar. I am going to see if this combination with touchdown works, as the email app is required to run if syncing exchange contacts is to work at all. I hope don't run into the process hanging without email actually syncing. I'm still waiting this trial out to see if touchdown is worth it; they did add a new feature that shows the number of new emails in the notification icon (I don't recall if this is in the stock email app).
My battery life has not been as good since I upgraded the ROM a few weeks ago. The biggest culprit seems to be the Android System and Android OS. Each of them typically use about 8-10% of the battery, so it's not uncommon for them to have used 20% of the battery combined.
In addition, Android System uploads a bunch of data. In a full day, Android system typically sends 3-5 MB and receives 400-900 KB.
Android OS (is this all apps combined??) has uploaded 500-1000 KB and receives 10-20 MB.
I've frozen the apps on the receommended list (except for a couple I use like the ATT code scanner). Use no social network stuff. I do have Exchange plus two Gmail accounts + 3 K9 email accounts setup.
I can't seem to manage any setting change to reduce the battery/data usage of these two.

I've done all those things except for (Settings > Data manager > Data Delivery > social apps > sync over wifi), which I did actually do a couple hours ago on one last run through the settings to make sure I hadn't missed anything before posting here.
What the heck is android system uploading? Is that motoblur backing things up? I have searched XDA and googled and while I have seen the question about Android System with large uploads, I have yet to see a solid answer as to what's going on.

I am rooted, and have frozen most of the apps on the recommended list.
I don't have facebook or twitter accounts setup. Only Exchange, Gmail and some K9 IMAP accounts.
using traffic monitor, i found that the calibrate compass service, which seems to be a whole suit of services sucks down a lot of data. its been using about 1gb data a month. which im sure is putting some strain on the battery.
Multiple email accounts will cause a great deal of data usage on their own. Especially an exchange account and a gmail account.
If you can, why not use the gmail account to send and receive all the email for the imap accounts. I do this with my business accounts and my personal email.
You also may be syncing your contacts and all with both the exchange and the gmail account which would cause extra data and would be a bit over kill.

I have got my galaxy S2 for a week now. I absolutely love the phone. Just that the battery problem is killing me. I only manage to get half day of usage for the phone. Then I started reading infinite number of threads on xda on battery issue. I basically tried every possible methods:
flashing so many roms (on decided to stay on KF2 right now),
deleting all widgets(could be),
root the phone and install titanium backup to delete a lot of software which ppl
classified as the source of the drain(could be),
disable fast dormancy(dun see the difference),
disable push email and sync(could be),
using advance task killer to kill app every hr (dun work),
juice defender(dun work)...
etc etc...
SOMEHOW, my battery drain issue STOPPED yesterday!!! I still dunno what exactly is causing it to stop draining. But I DID find out a pattern, when we go to the battery plot section, if the phone shows a solid "Awake" bar, then the battery drains very fast.
So I started trying very possible way to stop the phone being "awake", the above methods I marked as cound be are the ones that I think can actually help. Using advance task killer does make a "segmented awake bar" for a few minutes, but it becomes a solid bar soon after, so no use (i found "clean memory" function comes with the phone better than ATK). Deleting widgets wont stop the phone being awake but it certainly makes my phone feeling lighter and faster. Then I rooted the phone, and start using titanium backup to delete ( i cant just freeze with free version) the possible softwares, e.g the hubs, wifi-sharing, softwaire updates. Then all in a sudden, the phone tries to sleep!!!
For me, I think social hub could be making the phone awake (at least it must be one of them), but I NEED if I need to use the email app that come with the phone for receiving emails from hotmail.
funny stuff starts....
So solve it, I imported my hotmail account to gmail using POP so that I can use gmail app to check hotmail. But then my hotmail and gmail start going crazy...!!
Reason: I did similar setting before in my hotmail account to receive gmails in to my hotmail account. What happens next is... Yes.. I basically created a "loop function" which makes the two accounts keep exchanging emails automatically to one another.. I received 1000+ emails in just a few minutes and it keeps going faster and faster.!!! > < Therefore I wont try this again!!!!
Can someone tell me a solution of getting hotmail emails in other ways besides those stupid apps (e.g android mail) in the android market which basically acts as a bookmark to get you to the hotmail page? MANY THANKS!
One of these might help:
POP your hotmail into a new yahoo mail account and install yahoo mail client.
Set up a new gmail account and POP hotmail into it, use gmail client to read main and this new account.
Figure out whats wrong with your phone that makes samsung stock mail waste juice, I use it for exchange mail and it's just a bit more hungry than what I would have wanted, I get through a heavy usage day just fine.
JuiceDefender surely helps. I'm getting 2 days with medium usage, KE7 stock firmware. Yes, as you said if you have background tasks, that will kill the battery, but just close them if you don't need them. Also disable auto-sync, and let only your email sync.
Thank you kreo, i will try yahoo mail account with ur method!
I've found several threads, but none of which seem to help. I can't get my exchange account to "push" my email. I've turned on every option known to man to allow this to happen, but it just isn't happening without me having to refresh. Push works with my other two non-exchange accounts and it worked fine with my old HTC One M7. Any ideas?
I am having the same issues (exchange server not pushing email, have to manually refresh) plus phone is very warm and battery drain since the email is not getting pushed and I think the email app is trying to sync with the exchange servers and draining the battery. But email works (exchange push) with my previous phone galaxy s4 update to 4.4.4 with no problems

So, can anyone help us?
I get this problem a lot with gmail, yahoo, and hotmail. Sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't. The only good news is that the new Gmail app (coming soon) will be able to handle multiple accounts from Yahoo, Hotmail, and Exchange. So hopefully that will be a better app than Samsung's mail.
PS> If you set it to retrieve every X minutes it will work, but it will waste more battery than push.
Ok, it's been a couple of weeks, so I thought I would ask again. Does anyone have a suggested solution to this? Am I the only one having problems with email not being "pushed" to my phone via ActiveSync? In doing a google search I see that this has historically been an issue, but there is no solution?

Been using the new Gmail 5.0 app, it handles multiple accounts nicely. It doesn't use push, but checks every 15 mins. Overall I like it more than the Samsung email app, so I am using Gmail now. I deleted all the accounts from the Samsung app. I've also noticed an improvement in battery life (subjective).
I have the same issue
Hi all, it's been a LONG time since I've been over here. I recently got the Note 4 as a Christmas present from the wifey, she knows what I like. Probably helps that I've had every Note so it's a safe guess on her part. Yesterday I received the push update from AT&T which took it up to 4.4.4. Well, since that my push email works when it wants to. It will eventually push it but it could be anywhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours. This is unacceptable for me as I own a custom networking company that has jobs in all timezones and I need to get my emails immediately.
I have done all of the regular "troubleshooting" steps including wiping my phone and starting from scratch with nothing installed but the stock email. I even changed the SIM. All of the push/sync settings are enabled......ALL of them.
I would LOVE to use my Touchdown app which I basically keep on my phone now for the server search feature but don't use it for notifications because it doesn't show the email content on my Gear S. The only app I know of that shows that email content on the Gear S is the stock email app (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG).
Has anybody found a resolution to this? I haven't rooted my phone since my Note 2 but before that I'd been hacking them since these threads at XDA were WinMo only. I'll gladly put a new ROM on if I can get my email working and pushed to my Gear S again. Does anybody have any recommendations that may save me some time poking around?
Thanks for listening to my long winded story. I've been told I write too much. Happy holidays!
use maildroid app.
I have no problems with my MS Exchange account pushing the new emails. I remember reading in the MS Exchange set up instructions that if you set it up as a POP rather than an Exchange account the calendar & task functions will be disabled. Knowing that an Exchange account can be set up as one or as a POP email account I would make certain you have it set up as an Exchange account and not a POP account. Not sure if that has anything to do with the push feature but I thought it would be worth mentioning.
My Exchange email through the Samsung email app works fine and push email works. It's worked on every Samsung phone I've had on every rom I've tried so I guess I'm of no help.

Sprint Note 4/Exchange 2010
I have also been seeing inconsistent results with exchange push email as to the timing of received messages. I was also seeing the battery drain issues associated with exchange push. Although I noticed the battery drain was worse while using cellular data as opposed to wifi. I have only been using the samsung email app with stock NK2, with Hybrid X, and BobCat roms. Same results on all roms. I have repeatedly gone thru the steps of deleting phone thru webmail, delete account on phone after force stop of exchange and email apps and resetup, added account thru email app instead of thru accounts. If I saw it in a forum I tried it. I do primarily use wifi whenever possible. I did confirm it was only exchange push causing my issues as I could set to 15 minutes or manaual and not see the battery drains.
i also had a Nexus 6 along with other devices prior to this phone and push worked just fine.
So yesterday I took the plunge and loaded MailWise. My phone is now using push and is working great. As it has on other phones/devices I have had. Not seeing huge battery drain even on cellular data. Yes, it is possible to see data icon stop running constantly on cellular data after all with this phone. 6 hours off charger today and still at 90%. Prior I would have been pushing 60% range. Receiving email notifications on phone either prior to my desktop outlook or at the same time. Which is normal. Specifically tested by sending messages to my exchange account using gmail and yahoo while having desktop outlook open and running.
I did notice thru webmail that my device now shows up as Android instead of SAMSUNGN910P
Hope this can help others
