[Q] Might have soft bricked my phone... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Today I tried flashing CM 11 onto my S4. I have it rooted and I have safestrap loaded onto it. When I went into safestrap to flash it I also queued up GApps Aroma not realizing that it would run that before it would reboot for CM 11. Now my phone is stuck at the "Samsung GALAXY S4" screen and won't continue. When I connect it to my computer it makes a tone that registers it connecting but it doesn't show up in My Computer.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to unbrick or restore it to factory?
Thank you,
Mik

Go into download mode. Odin back to stock.

Cm will not work in ss. You'll have to use only tw based roms. What firmware are you on? There are tar files in the general forum for that firmware which you'll have to flash in Odin. Sammobile will not have those tar files for you.

Sammobile has firmware for many Samsung devices. It just doesn't have anything newer than mdl for the i337.

Alright done a bit of reading like you said but I still have a question. From what I read Gapps wont work with SS since it is CM based. But is there something similar to it that I can use to get rid of bloatware? Or do most of the ROMs not have that kind of stuff in them?

Most roms don't have all the bloat. Use titaniumbackup to freeze any bloat you don't want.

Flashed wrong twrp...

Ok... I have been reading way to much today, to the point i did something rather noobish.
Was in the dev section TWRP thread specifically looking to downgrade fron 2.6 to 2.5, saw the last post where someone posted a dropbox link of 2.5. Thought "how convenient" and flashed. But the zip was for another model number, now i cant get into my recovery.
Odin flash of the stock image is always an option. But one that I would prefer to avoid it if at all possible. I was hoping that someone else out there was well... as stupid as I am, and maybe had some advice?
Is there any possibility that goo manager will simply over right the wrong recovery image with the proper?
Or is it by any chance possible to simply flash the TWRP ZIP with Odin?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, and I already know that I'm a burnout lol.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk 2
Just flash the 2.5 twrp zip in twrp. It'll down grade
Goo should over write it, and just to make sure ..you have the i337m -Non att variant. Youll have to see if anybody has a non loki version if twrp 2.5

Yeah, just finished a backup/restore after goo re installed 2.6.
Everything seems fine. Just with so many "brick" threads on here wanted to be careful.
The bricks revolve mostly around the newest update that locks the boot loader on the at&t s4. On the m non at&ti believe you just need a non Loki kernel but I am not positive.

My phone is bootloader unlocked from the start from what i understand its the Canadian Rogers varient.
Im just now after reading countless threads wraping my head round this device. Its way more complex of a situation then the note 2 (previous phone).
My understanding is that we stay away from anything loki'd.

Ponder that, a canuck is less subject to tyranny? Your bootloader isn't locked? NICE! AT&T has degenerated from American Telephone and Telegraph into a globalized melting pot of greed and required upgrade costs and technical support that uses broken English spoken by people in India. You Canadians luck out this time!
I jumped in with motochopper to get root back in May and had the AT&T Software update service frozen with Titanium Backup back in June, I was so lucky to be "on top of it" by reading this forum. I used "Casual" to obtain TWRP 2.5.0.2 a custom recovery. I've never seen it so easy. After burning an image 3.56 GB of my stock firmware, I have since deleted it from my handset and replaced it with a nandroid of my daily driver here because GoldenEye is flawless. I saved a copy of the stock firmware on my desktop computer just in case, but I doubt I'll ever flash it and all of it's horrendous bloatware.
So I'm a happy camper, that only suffers the jone'sen for a fix as a "flash junkie". I will try CyanogenMod on this S4 after they iron the kinks out.
Looks like you're ok now?
FYI for anyone else in similar situation, ROM Toolbox Pro can download and install recoveries as well. It can access TWRP as well as CWM recoveries. A bonus for TWRP, it detects 2.5.0.2 as latest (avoid the occasional Teamwin splash screen hang with 2.6)!
I used this method to downgrade from 2.6 to 2.5.0.2. :good:
Word of warning, why upgrade from a working twrp 2.5.0.2, when it works flawless? Sometimes upgrading to a newer, is not always the best...look at the XDA app....yikes...

Wrong twrp flashed
Dear friend wrong twrp for my device I'm not able to go to the boot menu, how can i get rid of this, help me please. I've my stack memory and kernel already backup in my device memory.
The phone is an att i337? If it is, I assume the bootloader is unlocked since you were able like to flash a custom recovery.
i have no twrp AND I am stuck in boot loop...............................what will I do
Boot into download mode and confirm the phone's model number. Then flash a stock ROM from sammobile.com with Odin to get the phone back to stock.

Galaxy S4 Recovery mode not working

So, first, I'm running the stock 4.2.2 rooted on the ATT SGH-I337.
I installed ROM manager shortly after the root, and recently downloaded CM 10.1.3 for the att model of my phone. However, I couldn't find it in the recovery system to flash it. So, I install goomanager and flash over to TWRP, thinking maybe TWRP's easier interface will help me to find it. I reboot into recovery, and if I attempt to enter recovery mode, it gets stuck on the "Downlaoding, do not turn off target" screen. So, I re-flash CWM back on it, and reboot to recovery, and get stuck on that same screen again. If I just boot it, it's fine, jumps right back into 4.2.2 TouchWiz rooted. However, as you probably know, I can't install a ROM without recovery mode, and stock TouchWiz is poo.
I'd like to get CM running asap, although I'm just glad my phone still RUNS for now (my experience installing CM on my S3 was a NIGHTMARE).
So yea, any reason I would be getting stuck on that screen and unable to enter recovery? Like I said, I'd like to have CM as soon as I can.
Also, if someone can link me to a guide to install through CWM w\o needing a computer, that'd be wonderful. Thanks!
I'm assuming you're running on the MF3 build version. Read up before you brick your device. Your only option for a custom recovery is safestrap. Come on people.
Cheers.

You never saw twrp. You saw the stock recovery. Mf3 won't allow a custom recovery.
Edit, you did see an i337 in the you tube vids, but it had mdl or mdb firmware. You can put a custom recovery on with them. Unfortunately it's not possible to downgrade the firmware.

And also, I did, in fact, read past rooting, and found several people running CWM and TWRP fine, so I figured it would work. Now maybe they didn't have MF3,and I wasn't paying extremely close attention, but I'm pretty sure there were some on the same model and firmware as I am.

So, at this point, it's a waiting game for someone to find out how to put a recovery mode on an MF3 firmware, is what you're telling me?
Also, I may have been in stock. I don't remember EXACTLY what clockwork looked like. I just know it wouldn't let me select the gapps and CM files, which is why I tried TWRP. Though I did have CWM recovery flashed when I booted it into recovery those several times.
Dude you never booted CWM. That was MF3s stock recovery. MF3 does not allow any custom recovery but Safestrap.

[Q] Installing Custom Roms?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to android and custom ROMs as I just switched back to android last week. I looked some things up already, but I'm still pretty confused about working out ROMs on my Galaxy S4.
So this is some information that I got from looking stuff up and just wanted to confirm.
1) My phone is on MK2
2) Rooting is possible (I rooted my phone), but you can't download most ROMs
3) There is no way to change from MK2?
4) Only TouchWiz ROMs will work on my phone
5) Clockwork Recovery and TWRP doesn't work, only SafeStrap
I want to confirm these as I want to install CyanogenMod 11 on my phone.
Half of these questions are probably out there, but I'm new to this all and just want to confirm everything. Thank you for your time.

Hello,
2) Rooting is possible (I rooted my phone), but you can't download most ROMs .. not true... you need to use safestrap recovery. There are close to 30 roms you can install.
3) There is no way to change from MK2?... Nope. can't go back.
4) Only TouchWiz ROMs will work on my phone.. correct. only touchwiz 4.3 roms
5) Clockwork Recovery and TWRP doesn't work, only SafeStrap... correct.

That's the worst one you could have flashed, it contains new bootloader. I have not kept up there and you should go back read entire thread.
Also, just FYI read OP and first and last pages of rom threads before flashing unless you are already familiar with rom. Saves a lot of headaches--
But, again NO 4.4--hope you get it sorted. If I run across anything, will post

I just followed the recovery process in this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279
However, although it is working, there are some things I found.
1) This process will reinstall all bloatware (which isn't really a problem unless maybe the reinstalled bloatware takes up too much space)
2) My phone lags a bit and constantly pops a message saying that the Samsung Keyboard stop working, which makes going into apps and such very difficult. (EDIT: Fixing this is just changing the default keyboard. Will try reinstalling it to see what happens)
3) You lose root

+1 and make sure you know what firmware you're on
what happened is you upgraded your bootloader to one that is "locked" and you can't go back. now you have to use safestrap recovery instead of TWRP. i did the same thing it sucks because now we can't use custom kernels.

Not if you're on mf3 firmware or newer. Do you know what firmware you're on?
im going to help you out because i went through this the other night:
first you need to do this to get out of download mode.
get odin3 for your pc and connect your phone while in download mode. if you haven't already get the http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows and install them.
next download this
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23321874045862958
this is 4 files you will put into odin to get you back to stock everything. this is 4.3 not 4.4.2 because i assume you want to have a rooted phone with a custom recovery and there is no way to root 4.4.2 yet or put a custom recovery on.
so when you unrar the file add the 4 files to ODIN and flash
NEXT: you should be in stock mode now. enable developer mode by going into settings about device and clicking build 7 times. enable usb debugging in developer mode.
now you can root. download http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2559636&d=1391563147 , extract to a folder. connect your phone to your pc with usb and run install.bat. go through the process. now you are rooted.
next you can install safestrap recovery mode (looks just like TWRP just you cant install custom kernels.... and only some custom roms, sucks i know)
http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/jflteatt/safestrap/Safestrap-JFLTEATT-3.71.apk just run that and install recovery from the app.
so now you have your 4.3 phone with stock rom rooted and a custom recovery. IF YOU DARE try and flash a rom. go here for more info on that. scroll down to the part that says ROMS OVERVIEW
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
i tried and ended up stuck in download mode again so i gave up and am chilling in stock 4.3 with root and custom recovery at least for now until i have some free time to try another rom.
THE END. hope i help some people with this

[Q] Bricked i337 -- URGENT

Hi everyone,
I am new to android mods and such and I may very well sound like an idiot. However, even though I know little to nothing of what I am talking about I am in dire need of help. I never did any heavy modifications like custom ROMS but I merely rooted it and installed some tweaks via the xda installer. After toying around with one of the tweaks I seemed to cause an annoying random reboot which would happen when I would sometimes go to unlock my phone. Fine, I could deal with a few reboots here and there. However, my phone recently got stuck on the AT&T loading emblem and stood in my pocket for 2 hours draining a lot of battery and has not been resolved since. I am unable to enter safe mode and I tried a few guides to flash it to stock but I honestly have NO IDEA what I am doing. I am aimlessly following guides here but there is so much variability therefore I feel as if I would have the most success with personalized help.
What do I do? Please use simplified terms along with (relatively) full steps. For example, if I were to flash something I would go into recovery mode with home + vol up button factory reset, and the AT&T logo would still be there, frozen.
Things I have tried but have probably done wrong:
Factory reset
Install custom ROM
All and ANY help is appreciated at this point, I am desperate.
Thank you,
Suprr
Also, my ultimate goal is to install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520418 this mod, or at the very least get the stock ROM working so my phone is usable.

I am assuming that you havent yet taken the OTA update to NB1 and your base is MK2. Or, do you have a MDB/MDL bootloader?
If MK2: You have to flash the full stock Mk2 firmware using odin. Download the "Full odin tar files" from the All things ATT thread
if MDB/MDL: Download the stock firmware from sammobile and flash using Odin.

He must have determined you are not on mdl/mdl firmware. Those firmwares would allow you to easily flash custom roms, nb1 is not as easy and limited to touch wiz based roms. Do you know if you had a custom recovery, twrp or cwm?

Alright, then the link you posted to the nb1 firmware should be ok for you to flash in Odin

I am flashing it right now. Let's hope it works.
EDIT:
Flashed the full tar version for mk2 to no avail via Odin
Flashing the MK2 full tar file from here in Odin 1.85 says it was successful (green box) and when I went to restart the phone it was still stuck on the AT&T logo.
I flashed from this thread and this line:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700726
To return to factory stock MK2 flash the I337_MK2_Full_Odin tar

Boot into recovery and do a factory reset. That should get you past the bootloop
Ps, the first boot is going to take longer than normal. Give it a good 10 minutes

You're on mk2 firmware now. You'll need to root it using safe root and then put safestrap on in order to flash that rom. Look in the general forum for index, all thing mk2 and nb1. There's a lot of info there so read it carefully
