I own a originally Sprint S4, after rooting and playing around with it (I recall updating the modem and installing Triforce Custom ROM).. one day i realized it turned into a Canadian S4 when I tried to install another Custom ROM (Beanstalk 4.4.2), CWM said I was trying to install a jfltespr file and I needed a jlftecan one. I looked for the canadian version of the ROM and it installed without a problem and everything works. My phone now shows model as SGH-l337M and I can install anything made for the Canadian variant. Can someone explain to me how is this possible and how can I revert whatever I did? Thanks in advance.
P.S: I'm positive that I played around with more things, I just don't remember.

Glitch in the Matrix... should have taken the blue pill.
You flashed a ROM that was not for this Sprint S4 (SPH-L720) so of course the model will show as different. If you want a U.S. Sprint model ROM then flash one of them to get the right build number.
Not sure what you're asking. Or are you just stating?

Thanks for answering, my question was how do I go back to Sprint model and you just answered. But I can't help to wonder, can I use this method to freely change my S4 Model so I can install say, International S4 ROMS? (I9005)
You do NOT change the model your phone will forever be a SPH-L720. Its only a build prop change that happens that makes it seem like the model number has changed. I can do.the same thing with stock NAE ROM by changing one line in the build prop.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
As daniel4653 said you don't change the model - it is what it is. Like slaping a Mercedes hood ornament on a yugo - it's still a yugo.

the answer is pretty much NO. Unless it's ported to the Sprint Galaxy S4 hardware. Unless you want to turn your device into a pretty paperweight that is.
I've got it, thank you for answering. So in order to go back to make my phone accept SPH-L720 ROMS via CWM I need to force-flash(say Odin) a Sprint ROM? Can't I just change that line in the build.prop?
You don't have to change the build prop for anything to flash. Just flash away via Odin or CWM.

The thing is CWM states that I should not be installing jfltespr ROM's whenever i try to because my phone is needs jfltecan ones, even though my phone was originally Sprint but now it displays as Canadian. That's why I wanted to make sure that flashing a Sprint ROM via Odin was safe.
Not really sure what you're doing, with what CWM or how. Sounds to me like you're using some other 'branded' recovery, or some other flashing app.
I suspect a whole lot more reading should be done.
But IF you have a Sprint Galaxy S4 model SPH-L720 (and not the T version) you can install Philz recovery - look in the dev section. Then flash whatever you want.

So I'm brand new to rooting and i just rooted my sprint galaxy s4 SPH-L720 yesterday. I've been trying to get a rom but every rom leads to a bootloop. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I made a backup of my stock so i can always go back to that but I would like to know what I'm doing wrong.
I've tried:
WanamLite ROM for Galaxy S4 GT-i9500: .........Bootloop
Pac Man Rom..................................................Bootloop
omega.............................................................Bootloop
Foxhound.........................................................Just went to stock
What am i doing wrong?
Can i use roms for i9505 on i9500?
How do i know a rom works on my phone before i download it?
if you respond please make you answers are simple as possible since i am new

None of those ROMs have a Sprint kernel built in them, so even if you were able to get them to boot, which you obviously didn't, you would most likely have non-working data (3G & 4G), WiFi, etc.
Stick with the ROMs that are in the dev sections of the Sprint GS4 variant and you'll be fine. There are others that have claimed to be able to get non-Sprint variant ROMs to work, but YMMV.
Good luck!
It happen to me as well. But i just make sure i force a delete Data and it got off it.
I was in rooted stock.
I flash an incomplete Team Sonic rom.
Dawn download...
I try to restore it wont boot, i flash the Cf root with odin that got me on a loop, i then did a force data delete and done.
Not the same in the way but might help.
So freak out, no rom no back up
Hahaha

If you're trying to flash i9505 onto i9500
That's the first problem, different chip sets wherein probably lies the issue. Flash what is built for Qualcomm on Qualcomm based phones, Same goes for Exynos, don't try to mix and match.
You should run SPRINT ROMs to.start off. Its possible to run Verizon ROMs with working 3G with some small edits.

Go to the sprint galaxy s4 forum, it's definitely your problem. Try any rom, they are all good, and once you are comfortable with the rom, try a custom kernel for your rom. And read the thread about the rom you're flashing, lot of times there's good tips and options you otherwise wouldn't know about...

wow you really are BRAND new to posting see you got one post, well Welcome to the community. Now to your dilemma all those roms you tried to flash are not mad for our phones so you were in the wrong forum when you downloaded those roms. Now you can use those roms as long as you flash a SPRINT kernel after flashing one of those roms. Now your not guaranteed to get data working it's been hit or miss for many. Try flashing one of the roms from our Dev section, you'll be happy

He can only flash I9505 roms I9500 roms could brick his phone because it is ment for the international exynos version. I9505 roms are fine if you flash a sprint kernel after flashing the rom because they have the same hardware other than the cellular radios are different. (Depending on the rom data or voice or both might not work) I would not recommend flashing and roms not intended for the SPH L720 because I havent been able to get data on any of thoose roms. Hope this helps.

I just flashed a custom rom. However, I was extremely stupid and did not backup my device before installing. I think I may want to get my phone back to the way it was.
I went to galaxys4root.com to download the AT&T Galaxy S4 stock rom. However, whenever I tried to flash it {using twrp}, it said it failed. Any help?
My phone still works fine; I would just like to get back to the original rom.

Have you tried using the stock firmware from "sammobile.com/firmwares/"
These you can load using Kies or Odin (depending on the file).. not using TWRP

I haven't yet tried that. My phone seems to also have gone from sgh-i337 to gt-i9505g. {The rom I'm running is a Google Edition.} At least, that's what the Model number states. I've decided for now that I will continue to use this rom since it's turning out to be pretty great.
However, for future roms/getting back to stock, is it safe to install i337 and/or i9505g roms?

The ROM won't properly figure out what model phone you have, the ROM basically shows what device model it was designed for.
For instance, my phone is actually i717d (d is added as the Canadian model, phone is from Telus).. but I use ROMs made for just the i717 (AT&T model).. they are basically the same phone.
I would just check to make sure hardware stats for the i337 are the same as the i9505g, since you're using a i9505g.. i believe that if the kernel is not meant for your particular device, it could generate errors or may even brick.
If ever going back to a stock ROM, use the one meant for your device exactly.
Not sure if i posted in the right section...but i purchased a Sprint galaxy s4 a couple months after it was first released and it was unlocked. I am a person thats pretty knowledgeable about rooting and roms and what not, but buying a that was rooted and unlocked i dont know where to start or go from here or even what the phone has. All i know is...it has a custom recovery (twrp) its on MDL android 4.2.2 and a kernel version of 3.4.0 ([email protected] #1) and it running a stock rom. Another thing is...i dont understand if its supposed to be unlocked doesnt that mean i can travel abroad and use a sim from whatever country im in? I tried and it didnt work. My gf's verizion s3 thats not unlocked or anything did happen to work..like wtf?
Anyway, to break things down...im looking for where can i go from here? should i start from scratch? I feel like im out of the loop with everything and looking for something to give my phone a face lift but i maybe want to stick with a stock rooted rom...whats out there? and also my phone is getting pretty annoying with wanting to install MF9.. posting this on xda also..thanks

Well you're currently on a pre Knox bootloader so I'd stay right there and just flash the rom of you're choosing to update. You can also flash a different modem as well and update that way without taking an ota. I'm running Carbon 4.4 and it's a pretty sweet rom but you'll have to decide which is better for you.
And as far as using the phone abroad I'm not really sure. Someone else can probably answer that one better than I can.
I know my Verizon S4 can go abroad not sure on sprint but I'm sure the answer is on here somewhere search it out.

I did not know that the S4 and S5 version numbers were the same. I changed the OP. It looks like the S5 version is still limited to using the stock partition only, like I said in the earlier post, I was wondering if anybody has tried the S4 3.75 Safestrap on an S5 as the S4 variant allows for the use of custom slots now. This may seem like a stupid question, since they are two different devices, but I was able to put an older version of the S4 Safestrap on my brother in laws S5 a couple/few months ago.

I used ss version 3.72 which is a s4 build on an S5. The new S4 version is 3.75 so something obviously changed. To say you "can" use a custom slot but it is not recommended is the same as saying "dont" use a custom slot. There are no issues whatsoever with the custom slots on the S4 version of Safestrap 3.75 so if it can be used on an S5 as version 3.72 could, there would be no "you can but it isn't recommended" only "you can so go ahead". I'm sure you see the benefit in that...

you can use a rom slot.. some have had some issues such as dpi being off or other minor things.. it really varies.. of course you cant reboot without a battery pull which does it for me..
when ss rolled out i was helping hashcode troubleshoot and was in his irc chat.. he was always saying how he does NOT recommend you install any ss recovery on your drvice that wasnt made specifically for it since theres a lot that goes on with SS such as partitions and rom slot creation to the internals etc..
hes very busy too and im not sure if hes around or updating ss at all.. either way, i know hes most likely not coming back to update ss on the s5 since he wouldve already..
i dont recommend installing the s4 or any other ss apk for our device.. if you or anyone else is successful then please share lol

I told my brother in law ss 3.75 for the S4 may or may not work on his phone. I can fix the soft brick so I'm not worried about it. If he let's me give it a shot I'll be sure to let you guys know how it went, one way or another. Ive been switching back and forth between eclipse and Hyperdrive with ss 3.75 on my S4 all weekend and the only issue I has was with eclipse which is in my custom slot. I had to toggle wifi on and then reboot to get the rom to find wireless networks but I only had to do that the one time. Goodstuff. Hopefully he will let me mess around with his S5 this weekend

I went into recovery mode and press backup and restore. I saw an error message but i ignored it. So then I wiped data and factory reset. I tried to install Cyanogen through install zip. I installed it but when I went to reboot phone it rebooted back to recovery. It does that every time.

Someone? Please?
Your stock ROM is here. If you want to install a custom ROM afterward, you need to make sure the custom ROM will actually work on the Straight Talk Galaxy S4. Keep in mind that there are some thirty different variants of the Galaxy S4. The ROMs in this forum are geared towards the I9500 series international phones as well as the I9505G Google Edition phone. These ROMs may not be built with the Straight Talk S4 in mind, as it's a minor variant compared to the I9505.

Thanks! I started download like 5 minutes ago and it's 0.1/1.3 GB downloaded. Can you send me it through mediafire or something?. Also can you send me a link to a Cyanogen Mod for Straight Talk S4
Unfortunately, you're just going to have to deal with the download speeds. For me to post the MD5 file on MediaFire, I would need to download the ROM I provided you the link to, split that file into multiple downloads of 50MB each, and host it on MediaFire. Since I do not have a Straight Talk S4 but an I9505 with a Straight Talk SIM, I think you'll understand why I'm not going to waste the time and bandwidth.
Regarding the link for a Straight Talk S4-compatible version of CyanogenMod, check the CyanogenMod website and see if someone there has made one. If they haven't, you'll have to build one yourself because no one is going to do it for you. Again, I don't have the phone, but even if I did I have no desire to run CyanogenMod on it.

Alright thank you I downloaded the ROM, installing it right now with Odin. Taking forever with system.img.ext4 but it looks like it's almost done. I'm pretty sure I have no idea how to build my own CyanogenMod for my phone. Any ROMs you consider are good and compatible with my phone?
I don't run a custom ROM, but a stock, debloated one. I would simply root the phone, debloat it using the excellent guides and tools on XDA, then install a launcher from the Play Store*. From there, make sure S-Voice is disabled in the Touchwiz launcher so you can use Google keywords ("OK Google") and enjoy your phone.
*I use the Google Now Launcher because of its "swipe to the right" access to the Google Now cards, but there are other very good alternatives to the GNL. Nova Launcher and Apex come to mind.
You said you installed a rom, does it work? Can u link me to the website you found it at? Also, the recovery you used?
I have the same phone, sm-s975l and im definitely not as experienced with flashing and blah blab. So I was looking for some help I guess
