This is a tut I wrote a few years ago, but it should still be valid for today's stuff. Good luck

That is the thread that will have what you are looking for. You will get told to read read and read some more. There is so many options so you will be busy for a while trying it all. Feel free to message me if you want to just chat on my experiences but I am no expert. Good Luck!
Yeah, I went to microsoft website, and found an update from 6.0 to 6.1 but it's only for Vista, and not xp. It appears there are so many different roms that do this, but it doesn't appear like there is a basic 6.0 to 6.1. Am I wrong???
i want to upgrade my rom but i get so scared of bricking the phone that i just get discouraged and stop reading only because my knowledge is limited so thats what makes me scared to mess something up.
I agree, im a bit scared of messing up my phone, its a t mobiel dash, but i have a problem where my phone cycles and cycles at powerup, but will not load up unless i remove my memory card then gives me a sim registration error. apparently this will fix it. anyone know what it will enatil to do the update? i was able to find a download for it for my phone...
Hi All,
New reader/lurker and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I'm technical by nature but nothing to do with phones so I think all the nomenclature I see is so foreign to me that I'd love to read a primer or FAQ or anything to help me get up to speed.
My goals (I have a stock XV6800 from VZ for about 6 months now):
I want to tether this to any laptop and make it easy to do so. The only options under Verizon to do so without paying extra I have found are using the modem application (ugh) via this thread or using a DCD I found out via this simple thread on these forums.
I prefer to use the clean Internet Connection Sharing method so it seems I would need to upgrade to some DCD or other...if I only knew what that was and all the steps, considerations, options, pitfalls, etc. in doing so are.
Can someone point me to a guide for a Verizon XV-6800 that might make this possible, or what documents I need to read to get up to speed, where I can find the media, etc?
It feels a bit overwhelming to get bits and pieces of info but not enough to feel comfortable taking the first real step.
/noob
Thanks!
Well, to help others, since no responses...after scouring the 'net for much time, I found these two links which should help, and I'm temtped to use the short version but will read the other one for completeness:

If there is any other Verizon specific guide or something that might help a first timer, please point the way! I dig learning about all this.
There really isn't any carrier specific documentation. Just run the Verizon carrier CAB when you get done with the ROM. Just unlock, radio rom, Windows ROM, the carrier CAB. Then tethering is cake. Run the prog, click on connect and then connect it via USB. Windows XP thinks it is a network card and will do the rest. Works great.
Hi!
I thought I'd start a thread where we can iron out problems everyone seems to have with the Hero 200. Googling these things yields some spotty results, and one main website for cricket/metropcs flashing info is currently down. (The mobile files.com site)
Here's what I've come across as a newcomer to the Hero, trying to get it set up for rooting, flashing to another carrier like cricket, etc... If it's ok for this thread to stay around, I'd be happy to go back and edit this post with the answers to these problems and/or links to websites that have specific solutions that work. (Some of the problems I'll list here, I've already figured out but I don't have time at the moment to go ahead and put the solution in.)
Terminology http://thecricketmafia.com/free-beginners-guide-to-modifying-repairing-and-flashing-phones/
Problem 1 - Installing the correct version of HTC Sync and HTC Drivers so that the PC recognizes the Hero.
Problem 2 - Rooting the Hero. (An excellent guide for this is available here in this forum, but for completeness sake, I've listed the problem.)
Solution 2 Theresthatguy made an excellent guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
Problem 3 - Getting a COM port assigned to the Hero and installing the HTC DIAG drivers so that qPST and CDMA Workshop will work.
Problem 4 - The "Broadband Workaround Trick" people refer to, where you can use a Cricket Broadband account to backdoor your way into internet access on the Hero.
Problem 5 - Flashing a CDMA Hero 200 to Cricket/MetroPCS for talk and text
Solution 5 (in progress, not fully solved yet) Here's a cached, text only version of the only thing I've found about this... http://74.125.93.132/search?q=cache...+cricket&hl=en&client=firefox-a&gl=us&strip=1
Problem 6 - Flashing a CDMA Hero 200 to Cricket/MetroPCS for SMS/internet
Solution 6 (in progress, not fully solved yet) It would seem that to do this, the first thing in the process is to get CDMA Workshop and qPST, and probably at least one other program, up and running and communicating with the phone. However, just getting Windows (Windows 7 in my case) to install the drivers is keeping me and many others from getting started!
Problem 7 -
If I've missed a thread on here where someone has already consolidated this info, then my apologies! Flashing to Cricket, getting a COM port assigned and loading HTC DIAG drivers, and the Broadband trick, as well as finding a way to enable SMS and/or internet are my problems for the moment. I'm sure I can figure out most of my questions if I could just get Windows to install the HTC DIAG drivers! I've even tried setting up a VMPlayer with WinXP on it, but I gave up out of frustration last night and am waiting for some time to try again.
By the way, is it just me or is the Wifi really weak in this device? My Dell Axim x51v picks up stronger signals from the Wireless G Router next door to me and it's only a wireless-B adapter!
whats up guys, so ive read a few sites that explain how to install android onto the hd2. i flashed one with no problems and it works flawlessly then i tried doing my cousins phone and his is messing up, contacts wont save and its locking up every once in a while.
So here is my question alot of the threads i was reading had conflicting information. So they are both flashed with hardspl already what is the lightest and most stable winmo to lay android over top of. Also what do you guys suggest for the best android rom to run over winmo and would a bootloader make the phone more stable. So i know what to do but i want to know from you experienced vets as to what is the most stable winmo that will run android great and what android rom to run for minimal problems. Ive read hundreds of pages on roms and such but everything is always outdated by time i get to it..
So what is working great for you guys. Sense is preferred on android and winmo will pretty much never be ran so no sense would be lighter im sure. Thanks for all the help in advance.
Also one more thing, as both phones are currently running android when they both try to connect to the same wifi router niether one will recieve data until one of the hd2 disconnects from the router. Also confused with that as my evo never loses internet when connected to the same router. For your info the router is a 2wire att dsl gateway. im thinking it could be a problem with the router but that shouldnt be a problem, so maybe the android rom i am using is not using its real mac to identify itself with the router and is causing problems. The wifi is encrypted with wep encryption.
a) You did NOT flash Android, you simply booted into android via your SD card.
b) Android does NOT run on top of windows, When you run haret it kicks windows mobile from ram and boots into Android kernel. Windows is not running at all.
c) Do not ask "what is best" questions they are silly and annoy everybody.
Stop been lazy and read, do some research and learn something, If you dont you end up with problems like your cousins phone.

A is correct, at least until NAND is done and stable.
Just to expand on B, the only thing I get out of different WinMo ROM's is speed of boot. Disable Sense if your WinMo ROM has it so when it boots to WinMo and kicks off haret, it kicks up faster.
C, yeah, I have to agree, you ask 1000 people about 100 ROMs and and somehow, you will end up with 1000 different answers.
Another thing to try is to backup your SD Card and format the SD Card (yeah, I know Dev's say it's not needed anymore, but why not?). Make sure it's a Class 6 or higher (DEFINITELY NOT a Class 2 and some reports show Class 4 work, but I try and stick with Class 6).

When running Android, the reported MAC address of your wifi card is not the actual MAC address, but one that can be changed.
Because of this, lots of builds have the same MAC address, and therefore you'll have this problem when connecting to the same wireless router. (If you're both running the same build then you'll definitely have this problem.)
Do a search - you can set the MAC address in the startup.txt file, but I can't remember what the actual text should read. It's been discussed in the forums before now, so it's there somewhere.
Or instead of being a jerk you can offer help and support or skip the thread entirely lol. Saves us all time.
Anyway, there are alot of ROMS out that cater to specific tastes. Me, I love Sense so that's my preference. Right now though I'm running a stock ROM from tytung that is running smooth as butter. No lags and data drops are almost non existent. But I know ill be running a new Rom within a few hours.
I'd suggest testing the builds on a week trial run or shorter. Try one out for a few days to get a feel for it and see if it has issues you don't want to deal with.
As far as WinMo, that doesn't really matter. I have a GTX full ROM running, I just don't use it except when restarting lol.

Hello,
So I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636024
to put myn's warm donut on my US Cellular HTC Vogue. Pretty quick and painless, and I am very happy and grateful for the simple guide for a newbie like me.
I am having a few problems. The main one being I can't figure a way to access my sd card. I tried the Dual Mount SD widget, no luck. I occasionally see a K:\ but I can't actually access it.
And then tried the adb method from droidoholics, again no luck - adb never recognizes my device. It also times out when I try to uninstall or reinstall the drivers. I really just want to be able to put a new android build on there.
I am also wondering if it is possible to access 3G networks with this phone - I usually only get ~15 Kb/s downstream on my current network.
I am also wondering if it is possible to utilize the GPS - I had this working on my stock windows 6.1 OS but it was pretty useless for navigation.
I think I am just unclear about some general fundamentals of this process (and the capabilities of my device) and am getting heavily bogged down in detailed threads. I have spent most of yesterday and today trying to find answers to these problems here and at ppcg. I would really appreciate some general tips and answers.
And I just want to say thank you to the developers and testers for bringing new life to this device. Its a godsend.
Thanks!
