Can you still boot into the Android operating system itself? If you can, then you can download a terminal emulator from Google Play and use it to boot into recovery through its command line. Here's what you would need to type in, only type what is in bold:
su
(This requests superuser/root permissions for the app. When you get this, wait for a message to come up asking if you want to give it root permissions and then grant the app permissions.)
reboot recovery
This will make the phone turn off, and it will boot into recovery. If it doesn't boot into recovery, then the recovery itself is probably broken.
I'll try to get the button combo for recovery ASAP, just in case the terminal emulator method does not work.
EDIT: Here is how to boot into recovery with the button combinations:
1) turn off the phone, take off the cover, and remove the battery.
2) put the battery back in
3) hold down the volume down key. CONTINUE TO HOLD IT DOWN AS YOU THEN HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN THE PHONE ON AGAIN.
this method is to get into stock recovery, but you can try it to get into CWM. Post back what happens when you try these methods.

Hey i was following the idiot proof guide to rooting but the step to install clockwork recovery.zip is missing the dl. U need the .zip to flash the recovery to with android recovery so u can avoid adb (which for some reason i cannot get to work on this pc But it did work perfect on my other pc but its power supply just went out so at the moment i can not adb) and avoid SU ways.. the rom dosent have su in it after rooting. So i cannot use terminal app or adb.
my question is when i boot holding down vol and get to that white screen then goto recovery it takes me the the "!" screen i then hold up vol and power and i get to android recovery... If i factory reset and wipe cache cam i change a rom.zip to update.zip and flash it that way to get a rom with su so i can install clockwork recovery?
So basically i am asking can i use android recovery(not clockwork or recovery RA) to flash a new rom with su?

No you can't.
Clockwork recovery doesn't work properly when wiping. Use toasts method in the sticky. The recovery is also there.
Went to boot into recovery and the damn thing is stuck. I can move around up and down with the volume buttons but i cannot press enter with the power button. shutting it off only reboots the tablet and goes back into recovery. any ideas?

Can you get to the bootloader screen so you can use fastboot? If so try flashing the TWRP recovery, it's a great recovery.

I can press the power button and both volumes and it gets me to download mode... from there, every option i try just gets me back to recovery. when i press start, it sends me to recovery. when i press shut down and then turn it on - recovery. when i press restart bootloader, it still takes me to recovery afterwards. wtf happened here man? never seen this before.

If you can at least get to download/fastboot mode, either get the stock recovery.img file or extract the recovery.img file from a custom_recover.zip, such as CMW or TWRP and place it in the directory where you have the fastboot util on your Windows PC, plug in the device into your Windows PC. Then type the folowing in a Windows Command prompt(without the quotes): "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". Once that finishes then try rebooting back to recovery.
If you that doesn't work you may have a damaged bootloader, you can try extracting the bootloader(bootloader-manta-mantalj12.img) from the stock ROM and flashing it with the following command: "fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-manta-mantalj12.img" then you can type: "fastboot reboot-bootloader" to reboot directly to the bootloader.

This happened to me yesterday.
Step 1 - hold down the power+volume up+volume down
Step 2 - plug up USB cable and use fastboot to flash the "touch" recovery version. Usebthe method as before, you might need to point your machine to the "naked driver" in dev section to get windows to see the fastboot device driver.
Step 3 - once you are in touch recovery you can just use the touchscreen instead of power button

You can just "adb reboot" from any computer with working adb and drivers.
This needs to not be flashed by default from Rom Manager until they get it taken care of. Twrp and cwm touch work just fine.

Seriously. Can we please sticky a thread or something that says CWM isn't stable on the nexus 10 yet. It would save a lot of people a lot of trouble.
I had the same issue get rid of crappy cwm and flash twrp, flash it by downloading the 1.3 nexus 10 rootkit selecting option 6 i believe with your n10 connected to your pc, it will fix your issue

I was able to fix it by re-flashing CW touch. thanks guys!

Connect the phone to the cmd terminal on the pc and type: adb reboot recovery. You should have platform-tools from android sdk installed.

I had to use flashboot over USB to upload CWM, then CWM protected itself and re-enabled root, I didn'tevn have to reflash super-su.
- get he recovery image recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako
- flash it from bootloader:
- extract fastboot from the sdk (I extracted the whole sdk)
- restart phone while holding power+vol down (keep vol don pressed after release sing power)
- run "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-mako.img" on your PC
- after selecting reboot it gave me the option to protect he recovery and resinstall super-su
- the right verison of super-su was already installed by CWM so I didn't even need to reflash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip

By the way, for me it took a few tries to get it to work - I was pressing, pressing but nothing was happening but it finally worked.
So to the OP, if it doesn't recognize you pressing the two buttons the first time - try again until it works.

I can't seem to boot into recovery or bootloader.
I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted. I have purity rom installed, and have TWRP recovery installed.
I had this problem a few days ago but I was able to turn the phone off then hold both the up/down volume with the power button to get into bootloader, then from there I was able to choose recovery and get into TWRP. Mysteriously after I did that I could then enter recovery directly.
So now here are my symptoms. I cannot boot into recovery or bootloader directly through the ROM, or by using GOO.im.
If I power down and then use volume + power button, it powers up normally.
Also, even though I had trickster setup with custom settings and had it to "set on boot" those settings are all gone.
Last thing is that when I was able to get into bootloader last week I noticed the setting "secure boot - enable"
Any suggestions?
Update, I could have sworn I had installed ROM Manager, but it wasn't there. I installed it and used it to boot into recovery... Well it worked, now I'm able to get to recovery (TWRP). And I got back into the bootloader as well.
So I'm ok for now, but this is going to happen again I'm sure
your issue is that youre doing it wrong, its power button + volume DOWN to get into the bootloader.

Thanks, that's one issue out of the way... manual bootloader solved.
Now the issue of not being able to boot into recovery or bootloader through rom and settings getting wiped.

what do you mean through the rom? do you have a terminal emulator installed? try this..
su(press enter)
reboot recovery(press enter)
if this works fine, then its your rom at fault. dont use rom manager, that app will eventually cause you more grief then its worth. if you long press the power button, then press reboot, does it give you an option to boot into recovery/bootloader? and what do you mean settings get wiped?

Ok, so by "through the rom" I mean long-pressing power and then using that option to either boot into bootloader or recovery.
by settings getting wiped, I mean settings for the kernel, like custom color settings, vibrate strength settings, etc.
I won't be able to properly test your theory with the terminal emulator because I fixed the problem for now. I can now enter recovery using the long-press power button option.
I have read that sometimes a recovery won't "stick" sometimes if the "secure boot" is set to enable (You can see this at the bottom in bootloader screen). Maybe I need to disable this?

if you flash recovery via fastboot, it always sticks(unless you use fastboot boot instead of fastboot flash, then itll just boot it once). if you flash it with an app/toolkit, then it might disappear and need to be flashed again.

I used adb to flash it originally, I will flash it again tonight through adb.
though when my problem occurs I don't think the recovery is gone, I think that for some reason it can't be reached by long-pressing the power button.
The first time this happened to me I was able to go into bootloader manually, then I went to recovery from there.. .then booted into system. After that I was able to boot into recovery from long-press power.
hello
i have a lg v20 us996 phone and i unlock the bootloader via lg's official unlock tool. then i boot into bootloader and use fastboot tool flash twrp-3.0.2-1-us996 recovery, everything goes well.
i reboot the phone use fastboot command
Code:
fastboot reboot
phone seemed to get a factory wipe and i re-enable the usb debug again in the develope mode
then reboot to recovery use adb command
Code:
adb reboot recovery
but after reboot, i can only get lg's recovery. I've tried to re-flash twrp use fastboot, but every time i reboot to recovery i could only get lg recovery only, there is on way to reboot to twrp.
anyone can help me to get boot into twrp, thank you
Dont reboot the device after flashing recovery in ADB. Boot straight to recovery.
Can a mod please move this thread to the proper location?
This thread should be moved to the q&a section

but can u tell me how to reboot straight to recovery while finish flash recovery in fastboot mode, i can't find way do this.
I have unlock the bootloader so each time i boot up the phone, first there is a lg logo displaying for about 2 second and then a warning msg will appear on the screen. this warning message will display on the screen for about ten second and then a lg logo appear again then boot the android system. i don't know how to interrupt the normal boot process and get into recovery manual.
when i use adb to reboot to recovery, lg recovery will appear after the warning message screen off. i turnoff the phone and press power+down button together to try to get into recovery manually, but after the lg logo appear the second time, there is no way to start recovery. the phone will boot to android directly.

Also having this problem, however when I hold the POWER+VOLUME DOWN buttons to try to boot into recovery after shutdown/battery removal - the system STILL loads.
I get the warning saying the bootloader is unlocked though. After that the phone just starts up as normal, even though I'm holding the buttons

here is the step i find finally
1. re-boot into fastboot mode
2. flash twrp use fastboot command.
3. power-off the phone
4. power-on with power and volume down button holding
5. while lg log appears, release power button immediately for 1 second and then hold again
6. when recovery selection screen appears, select 'yes' both two times.
now phone boot to twrp recovery.
REMEMBER: WHEN YOU BOOT INTO LG'S SYSTEM AGAIN, YOU WILL LOST TWRP. IF U WANT TO USE TWRP AGAIN, U MUST RE-FLASH TWRP AND REPEAT THE STEPS ABOVE. THIS WILL LOST ALL DATA(PHONE WILL GET FACTORY RECOVERED)!!
I hope this can help you, good luck.

You need to delete the file recovery-from-boot.p in /system
Each time you boot, that file gets executed and restores the stock recovery from recoverybak. Alternatively, you can flash TWRP to both recovery and recoverybak.
