I am afraid to say my nook froze today with a strange screen:

The light part of the screen seems to be sl;owly fading.
The nook is unresposive to all the keys, including shutting down. It was running normally and not being used at the time when it froze.
When connected to usb the contents of the drives are displayed. I have tried to reboot with nootmanager, but nothing seems to happen.
Any suggestions for next steps?
Step 1: Connect USB and see that the two UMS drives are visible on your desktop.
Hold down the power button for 20 seconds.
Do the drives disappear?
Try pressing the power button again.
Do the drives eventually reappear?
If so, then it would appear that your Nook is working fine, just no screen.

By that test it's the screen. Any chance it could be the connection to the screen? I haven't taken it apart yet.
Yes, it looks like the screen.
I guess this is no longer in warranty?
There's a 1% chance that it is the display connector.
That's a pretty solid little connector though.
Replacement screens sell for about the same price as the Nook.
Also, it's not guaranteed that it's specifically the screen.
It could be the power management or interface for the screen on the main board.
If you have another Nook you can swap stuff to narrow things down.

If I get a used nook is there amy problem if I put my tweaked nookManager backup image from my old nook on it?
If you copy over a full 1.9 GB image to another Nook it will be the same and take over the identity of the old Nook.

I like MANY others has run into a problem with the touchscreen. Unfortunantly. So the story short:
1. Installed NAND + some ROM - Everything worked fine
2. After 2-3 months the touchscreen temporarily wouldn't react (on the lockscreen)
3. I did a total wiping of everything on the phone to original WM6.5 , then reinstalled MAGDLR and Android - It worked perfect for a day
4. The next day it didn't react, so i reinstalled as in 3. but it didn't work
5. I removed HSPL but I couldn't get rid of android - So I called the repaircenter and the dude I was talking to said that it didn't matter if i delivered it with android
6. It took a week to get it back - But they didn't fix the screen, they just left a note saying: "There have been unauthorized software on the phone. Therefore void all warranty and repair options"
7. I ordered a T5 Torx screwdriver, took a look inside the phone to check if it was a loose connection between touch screen and main board, but nothing seemed like it....
--- Now, this puts me in a weird position. Ordering a new DIGITIZER or both digitizer and LCD.. The LCD isn't damaged in any way, but I read that it's hard to install the digitizer only.
What would you guys recommend?
BTW, when I hold the power key in the start screen of android the upper option is being marked (Check picture) Is that an indication that the digitizer is ****ed?

Bump for help
get on an android build, and if you can get your touchscreen working, DO NOT TOUCH THE END KEY. for me, the end key causes all kinds of touchscreen problems. download extended controls or a similar app, and that will let you power off/reboot/go into sleep without touching the end key, then always use the green key/windows key/back key/home key to wake up and you should be good.
let me know if this work.
Thanks, I'll give it a try when I get home some time today
you are not the only one with touchscreen problems i had it
flash stock rom and send for repair
they changed the whole screen on mine phone, its not android issue its htc issue and the connection with digitizer and motherboard it breaks when pressing end button
forgot to mention only use my method if you don't have a warranty (like me) or don't want to send it in.
My ROM is NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.1
The last thing I did was watch a video on YouTube (Application). I then got a black screen the next time I tried to unlock it, this has happened a few times with this ROM so I normally just soft reset it by taking out the battery.
However this time I did it again and my phone turned on, but was constantly black. It vibrated as if it was turning on but did not do any boot logo. Tried booting it into the tri-color screen and nothing still.
I have realised though that it is still booting up, and working like normally, but the screen is just black, it is a lighter black as if it's responding if I press a button. I managed to unlock my phone by doing my pattern, and I can hold the home button and feel a vibration, so I know it has booted into Android.
I'm just really not sure what to do, I've looked all over the forums and found one similar problem but no solution. I think I can get into the tri-color screen if I hold down vol down but it won't show the screen, I just know it is in the screen as I see the light is constantly a light black as if it is constantly on.
Shall I try Task29 or does anyone have any idea what I should do?
Edit*
I can now run AndroidScreenCast and operate my phone from my PC. I can control my phone as if i was normally, but the screen is just black. Like I said it turns onto a light black when anything happens but hat's it. Is it just my screen afterall? (It has been cracked for over a year now but no problems upto now..)
My guess is that you accidently disconnected the output cable from phone to display.
This should be the issue since there seems to be no screen but interactive elements.

Any idea if I can do anything about that myself?

Hmm the cable is right under the hardware buttons.
You can try pressing around them to have a chance of getting it back (no guarantee and if you break your display its not my fault).
If you are experienced enough you could remove the LCD but I don't know anything about that.

yes, you could be the ribbon cable connector to the motherboard, you must fully remove the display and see if the latch on the cable connector is closed.
Also check if the cable is securely attached to verify you see two small ends' near the copper plug is attached to the plastic connector on the motherboard.
good luck

If i press inside the red area (including home button) it wont work and its just like i pressed the near side, like icons in the left or right of that red area.
I tried full data wipe, cache and dalvik, tried flashing newer sbf and no good.
Do you guys have any idea on it?
Thanks
Bad news bro.
I'm pretty sure its a hardware problem, the screen must be damaged...
So i need to replace it?

Better to get a new phone =D
a new phone is your option coz replacing the screen would cost you alot while you can get a better phone in a few bucks more!
New screens are available on amazon for 12 pounds (at least I spend this much)
However It may be a signal cable. They starts from 30$ on ebay
There are disassembly videos on Youtube.
I had a similar problem and I did the replacement two months ago and it works.
I bought the screen digitizer with tools on eBay.
Be sure That you have a torx3 beca use it didn't came on the tools! ;P
I had the same problem... I sent to the Moto Assistance and the had to change the touchscreen for a now one.
Good luck!
Not the cable. If the cable was damaged, it would shut down the entire screen. It's a problem with the digitizer. Hopefully for you it's relatively easy to exchange it, but you'll damage the camera sticker, the top panel of back side, above the battery and the speaker grid sticker (all of those are glued to the phone) in order to open it. Doesn't matter the way you take them over, you'll always damage it. Might wanna buy some of these on ebay too, although I'm not sure they sell it.
I had the exact same problem with my first M2, it was still under warranty but Moto took sweet 15 days to exchange it, and they returned my phone with a stuck volume rocker. Had to send it again, they took more than 15 days this time, so I asked for a replacement.

Hello people.
I need help to decide if I should try to save my nexus 4 or not. It has been dismantled for the past half a year and i recently got it to show signs of life after battling the steady red ring of death. (Was simple by the way, just used a wireless charger for a couple of minutes) But if I turn it on, it vibrates, the screen lights up and that is just about it. So i have no idea if the phone itself is functional. Some of you might tell me not to bother with such an old phone, hell, they aren't even sold anymore. But this phone has stuck by me through thick and thin, and has a sentimental value. I nearly jumped of joy when it showed signs of life after such a long time. I am not a rich man, so i need to manage my finances. Screen replacement would cost me 25 pounds, back housing would be another 10, but what if the phone is still not functional? Is there any way I can find out if I should take the gamble?
Some info -
I am not entirely sure if there is an OS currently installed on the device, as I was experimenting quite a bit before the battery run its coure.
I am also missing one of the connector things that are circled (there is one and a broken spot where another one should be) but i have no idea what it connects to. The little peg itself is safe and sound in my possession, if it can be welded back. It connects to whatever is under the power button on the back housing.

The screen is cracked in three places, but was working the last time I remember. But there have been many (and I mean many) dis and re assemblies since then.
I probably love this phone more than my friends and family. Just want my favourite piece of tech to be my companion again.
Could the red light be due to a dead battery?

Thankls for the reply. The battery is new and the red light issue is sorted. The phone just doesnt do much more other than vibrate and light up the screen. How do i know if it is still worth investing money in is the real question.
HI,
I have an SPH L720 that was working with the stock rom, I assume latest update but I'm not sure.
Something happened now it won't boot the OS, won't boot to recovery, it will boot to download mode but immediately reboots once in download mode.
I can't get odin to see it nor can I access it via adb sitting at adb wait-for-device while I put it into download mode.
It doesn't seem to matter if the sim chip/sd card are in or out same behavior. I'm sure the battery I'm using is charged.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Ideally I'd like to get some photos off the internal sd card, or at the very least reflash the stock rom to make it usable again.
thanks
Are you sure the battery has a good connection? Try wedging in a piece of paper or plastic to ensure that your battery connection isn't loose. Also the power button has a tendency to stock on these devices, try paying the power button very forcefully a few times, I had this problem with my S4 and eventually needed to take it apart and clean the power button.

thanks for the reply, i checked those and tried that, i think power and battery connection are okay. Pretty newish phone so it's in good condition.
I ordered a usb jig off ebay, hoping maybe it'll let me get into download mode and stay there, but not too hopeful

as i suspected, while the usb jig bounced me into download mode it immediately reboots. It's a goner I guess.
