I've used Galaxy Note II for about 6 months and just lost it in a festival last night
So I use my old Galaxy S II for now. Do you guys think it will be worth to buy a Nexus 4. Is it like using an worse phone than ever?
Because the price of a Nexus 4 is much lower than a Note II.
I know that I will lose some advantages of a Note II such as better camera, larger screen, S-Pen and its features (which I hardly use them), better battery life.
I, however, like flashing custom roms and like the speed of AOSP roms which is way smoother than Touchwiz UX in a Note II. And of course the closed-source CPU of a Note II is not much suitable to do it.
So what do you guys think if I buy a Nexus 4 at this time. Or it would be better to wait for the new Nexus device.
Thx
Don't compare the devices based on price
The hardware will last for a long time, and it will keep receiving the latest updates too
I would sell the SII and put the money towards a Nexus 4*. The Nexus 5 (or 4.2 or whatever...) might come out, and you might hate it. It might also cost £600 pay as you go instead of being cheap like the N4
If you must have the new Nexus when it comes out, you can sell the Nexus 4 and put the money towards the new one
*This may be a little bias as I hate Samsung devices, but it doesn't take away from the fact that the Nexus 4 is great, and worth a lot more than £250
I traded my galaxy note 2 for a nexus 4 and haven't looked back. The phone is more smooth and bloat free. It's unlocked and has a better resolution of 320 ppi compared to the note 2s ppi. You get timely updates from Google and the support on this phone is unmatched. The function I miss is the s pen but you'll quickly forget all that when you start using this phone. Now for me I can't see myself using another phone other then the Nexus 4 because it's so fast and buttery smooth.

Have you noticed any lags on Nexus 4?
My old Note II had a little bit lag sometimes when scrolling through home screens or opening/closing the app drawer.
I have the note 1 and the charger port was going bad so I found a sweet deal on craiglist where this guy had just bought a N4 and he was to much an apple fan. So I scooped it up basically brand new for 300. I have had it for a week and I really do love the N4. It is so fast and easy to root. It will be getting updates for a while as well. I was always flashing AOSP roms on my note so why not just have and AOSP phone.
The only con I have found that I am getting over quickly is the screen size. I really did like the larger screen. However the N4 is not exactly a small phone either but compared to the note everything seems small. That is really the only con I have so far.
I think if your into flashing roms or like AOSP then the N4 is a no brainer.
OK. Just knows the smoothness
Let's talk about a problem (high PRS value)
Is it obviously noticeable for daily usage? I read about the problem and it makes me hesitate.

Hi,
As far as N4 is concerned, I want to tell you that I am using this phone from last 1 month & it's performance is superb.
Also if you will wait for N5, it might not come as cheap as its predecessor (N4). N4 has hardware that will not be outdated for at least 2 years.
So the choice is yours....!! :good:
Just have to say just got my nexus and its great very fast and the battery is phenomenal... At least for how much I use my phone 2-3 hours screen time or less

Agreed.. stock unrooted 4.2.2, I get 18-20 hours with 2.5 hours screen on daily.

The Galaxy was quite popular and it still has much life left. That's why Samsung decided to create a successor...the Galaxy S3.
I agree that you shouldn't compare phones based on it's price. Just so you know when Google sells the phone they don't make a profit off of it. They lose money rather than gain.

yes its still worth it at this moment in time.
Great hardware, great design, super fast and snappy
HUGE development for the phone as well.
Main question should be to yourself, is it worth it to you ?
you got the new htc one and galaxy s4 and note 3 in the future of course these will beat out nexus 4 specs doesn't bring down the nexus 4
is really up to you.
I love my nexus 4 i always got tired of my old phones quick, my touch 4g, galaxy s3, htc one s, etc.
this is the first phone im TAKING EXTRA CARE OF just because i love it so much and im keeping it as long as i can as well.
Its a decision youll have to make yourself
can u hold off a while while using the s2?
or you want a sexy phone ASAP ?

100% agree!!!
Definitely get it. Because of it's low selling price, it wont drop much at all.
Performance is the one of the best.
Custom rom support is great. Nexus 4 was my first Nexus device and from now on, I don't think I can go back to other phones. I'll be getting the Nexus 5 on release day for sure.

you can´t say that, that´s a lie.
2 hours of screentime on a smartphone on which you can do ANYTHING are absolute CRAP
2 hours of screentime, on a 24 hours day, means that you won´t go from morning till evening.
period.
I just got my n4 last week, and I´m really angry because no one mentions that the battery is CRAP.
the phone is absolutely great, but the battery, as I might have already mentioned, is CRAP.
If you interested in getting Latest updates quickly and great ROM support, just get it.
Else HTC one and S4 would be better options...
Its always worth it as long as the phone was newly released

Relax. It's not a lie, the battery is phenomenal. I use my Nexus 4 the same exact way I used my Galaxy S3, and I used to get 10-12 hours on the S3 tops.
I get 18-20 hours on my Nexus 4 with the same exact usage.
Sounds like you have some bad configurations/apps messing up your battery life.. or unrealistic expectations. One of the two.

You can't say that that's a lie either (see what I did there? )
He's speaking from his own experiences and you have no way of conclusively proving that he's lying and hasn't managed a day with 2 hours of screen on time. For some people the battery life will be more than adequate (e.g. for myself). For others it'll be a huge disappointment (e.g. for you). Try out different kernels and you may be able to improve on what you're currently getting. I, for one, managed 17 hours with 2hrs 40 minutes of screen on time (playing Real Racing 3, that thing is addictive) before the phone reached 10% battery. This was with brightness at 100% and the kernel that comes with PA3+.

I don't think i have wrong settings
Of course, I also don't have any 'battery saver app that kills every single feature of this phone in order to go through the day.
And there's nothing unrealistic in that.
Jeeeez I'm kinda of confused now: i used to know that iPhone users were fanboys.... But looks like the situation here isn't any better

I don't use any app to control my battery. I'm on stock 4.2.2 (not even rooted)
If 18-20 hours with 2.5-3 hours screen on time is not phenomenal for today's phones, please explain to me what is.
For the record no one is acting like a "fan boy", I'm not saying that the Nexus 4 is the best phone in the world or that other phones suck, all I am saying is that it has great battery life based on my experience comparing it to multiple Android phones. Every phone I have ever owned did not get this kind of battery life.
I own a nexus 4 but I'm one of those people who always has to have the best but im short of the 630€ i need to buy it so im thinking of switching to pay monthly with vodafone for 35€ a month and get the s4 for 159 euro?

If you can stomach the short battery life and mediocre camera on the S4, you should stick with it. Right now Samsung is deeply into the lag eliminating stuff so it is worth waiting a couple of weeks to see where things stand, but the S4 obviously has boatloads more extres much better screen, battery life, camera plus new sensors, IR blaster... currently coming with some fluidity compromises. Hold on to it until the dust is cleared.

True true! Il do just that. See what the common problems are
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
It is always worth waiting to see how much progress manufacturers can achieve, Samsung has the largest resources to deal with issues, so I'd expect responsiveness to improve vastly by June. The Nexus 4 should help easing the wait.
I switched from an N4. My main reasons for switching are:
1) The N4's camera was hopeless in low light, as The Verge put it, its better to 'just use your memory'.
2) I had a massive delay when receiving push notifications on WiFi and 3G. There was a Google support thread where ppl basically identified a faulty driver, which even now has not been fixed. Some ppl say they have no problem but I certainly did.
3) The S4 has 4G!
4) After the latest update the N4s battery life improved dramatically. But the S4 is better still, despite using it like a new phone it still surpasses the N4 in battery longevity.
Arguably the N4 is slightly smoother in some operation. When changing tabs on the S4 there is a slight delay before anything happens. But this can be solved by simply switching to Chrome.
The screen smearing on the S4 makes it seem more laggy but in reality its not.
Hope this helps you decide.
/edit Almost forgot to mention, I miss photosphere from the N4
The Galaxy S4 has a better camera by a mile then the Nexus 4 and the battery life is also a lot better. Plus you get a bigger screen, faster processor. Over all the S4 is a way better device.

Go for it! It's pretty much the best Android out.
-Powerful CPU/GPU (especially the Octa)
-Excellent Camera
-High memory variants PLUS MicroSD support upto 64GB
-5.0" HD1080P SAMOLED display with 440PPI
-Huge 2600mAh battery
-USB OTG
-Native support for almost all Audio and Video formats
-Multiview Multitasking
-Capacitive display usable with gloves
-A whole lot of sensors
-Wolfson DAC (in the Octa)
-IR Blaster
...the list goes on, it pretty much whipes the floor with the N4 in everything except updates, but this being a Samsung, it will get updates for atleast 20months like the GS2.
This thing is a lil machine
Just one word: better battery
Yes, you will love the screen.
May start saving so

I want to buy a new smartphone. I've read a lot of reviews and decided to buy nexus 4 but I found issues said by many people on the internet summarized in 3 sentences
1)the battery life of nexus is too short and the battery drains fast
2)the overheating problem
3)the breaking of back glass without being touched !!!?
do those issues really exist ?
So I'm confused right now and don't know which smartphone should i get note II or nexus 4
two things i don't like in Note II, its horrible size and its plastic back cover !
What can anyone say? I have not experienced an abnormally short battery life or overheating and my back is still in one piece. I am happy with my choice of buying the Nexus 4.
Only you can decide which phone to buy. Nexus 4 is a good choice, but it's glass. It won't break on its own, but it will really break if dropped without protection. Battery life is not great but not terrible. It's your best bang for the buck though.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
The issues you mentioned do exist but mostly dependant on how you handle your device - you can't expect a glass covered device to survive without any smudges in your pocket with keys unless there is a case protecting it. Nexus 4 as a whole is worth buying even with these minor flaws IMHO

I'll bring The Ringke Fusion Cover case if i buy nexus 4 to protect it . but I mean if this smartphone does have many flaws and would make me feel regret if i bought it . so I simply could buy another one .
With my budget I can buy S III , xperia TX or one s if they are better than nexus ! ?.
Thanks all
^nope, trust me you won't regret. And regarding your other options it all depends on your preference and what you actually plan on doing with your device - for example if a better camera and expandable storage is what you need and you don't mind the looks of the device then you'd be better off with the likes of s3

I don't care too much about the camera and the storage because i'am pleased with the nexus camera and the 16 GB internal memory . I care most about the look of the device and its build quality . that's why i chose the nexus 4 at first ! .
First if all I get 5 and a half hours of screen on time (sot) with music on all the time (headphones) and YouTube xda Facebook Google + browsing..... Etc. phone idles around 38°C and in use about 42°C (perfectly normal temps). This is all on paranoid android and Franco kernel. My back glass scratches so bad but no cracks. If anything there are many strong cases for the back and methods of reducing overheating (setting the threshold lower in Franco kernel or any other one) and battery is great. I have a rev 11 so many of these issues will be fixed in the newer revs. If you do buy one. But I managed these problems well. So go for it
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
So I dropped my N4 from around 1,50m on a tile floor, nothing happened. I guess this phone breaks as easy as any other phone.
The other problems are software related, Franco Kernel helps alot against overheating problems and against bad battery life.
Common hsic wakelock problems can also be fixed using apps like Green Power.
Buy it!!

Take my (and everyone's) advice and get the nexus4, you won't regret it. I don't have any of the problems you mentioned, nor do my 3 friends with a nex4 also. If the greatest camera is not a priority, you don't have anything to think about then, just get it
The only problems you might face could be software related (delayed notifications over wifi etc..) , but all these have their solutions on xda (or just wait for the upcoming official update).

Same situation here. I'm between the nexus 4 and the Note II. I love the nexus phones more than any other phones for their fast updates, stock android, designs (nexus 4's design kills me ) and the hacking community. What i like about the Note II is the bigger screen, storage, longer battery life, LTE...and what i hate about it is its huge size, TouchWiz UI and its bad design. I don't know, i think i'm gonna pick the nexus 4.
After 7 moths I really love my Nexus 4 that still in mint condition, and I'm thinking on buying another for my girlfriend but Im not so sure about it...
I mean the Nexus 4 is great for a flashaholic like me, also looks amazing, but I think that maybe Vanilla android isn't for her... I mean the Nexus 4 isn't a girls phone...
Im between the Nexus 4, Xperia T, iPhone 4S or others like HTC one X or GS3
Thanks all for your comments .
Now I'm almost convinced to buy the nexus 4 . but I want to know is it impotant to buy it with warranty or not ?
The last thing remained that I'm worried about the glass back cover .
I don't want to pay around 535$ (with warranty) 470$ (without warranty) and lose the money in one second if I unintentionally drop it
Yes . In my country smartphones are much more expensive than their real prices
I'm sure they make an otter box for it

Sadly due to all the crap Samsung is doing atm with it's smartphones I've decided to part ways with my S4 while it still worth something, & that will be my last Galaxy S i buy.
As from now on the only Android smartphone i will buy will be the Nexus range, as i want the freedom to do what i want with my Smartphone, without having to worry about warranty problems should something go wrong with the hardware, that is not the fault of a custom rom or kernel.
I'm using my trusty little Nokia 800 as backup now until the Nexus 5 32gb launches which i'll be ordering as soon as it shows up on the Play Store in the UK, I'm just hoping now the camera & video recording quality is at least on par with the Galaxy S3 this time around unlike the Nexus 4 which tbh had a terrible camera.
The S5 can be the best thing since slice bread, but with all the lockdown Samsung is currently doing it might aswell rename itself Apple.
Anybody else also plan on ditching Samsung due to the way they are going?

FOr me Yes and no I love the TW features and pure android is smooth and fast but again its boring as well....When i say TW features I aint talking about the gimmicky ones but the useful ones like the camera, and others I am tempted to buy the nexus 5 but as my s4 is just 2 months old and especially after the brilliant job samsung has done with the 4.3 update am not sure I will stick to the S4 atleast till the S5 arrives
Updating my phone to 4.3. Heard that It is smooth and that's what I want. Sometimes I think to get Nexus 5 but then I realize how useful TW features are to me.
I've used Xperias (for a year or so) and even iPhone (for somedays) but none satisfied me as much as S4.
The most important thing that keeps me on Samsung is the Camera. Features + Quality. Yes, I'm sticking to Samsung
Definitely. I've had the S2 for 1.5 years and then the S4 for six months. I'm thoroughly bored of the Galaxy S range now. Gonna switch to some other OEM for the next phone. Or a nexus maybe if it doesn't compromise on screen, battery life and camera.
100% no samsung for me in the future. With no sources for exynos and all the knox ****, I am fed up. I could live with TW but the fact its laggy even with 2 gb ram and an octa core processor, I think I will look at other options.
Cheers!!

I hate Samsung and their current Knox implementation, turning them into Apple basically. Also I feel their AMOLED technology is nowhere near perfect (low brightness, unreadable under direct sunlight compares to LG screen or Iphones). However, no other phone in this current generation I can switch into. Newest releases contains so many flaws that are such a deal breaker for me: LG G2 without micro sd; Iphone 5s with terrible iOs 7; Xperia Z1, well, let's just say that it doesn't even ring any bells around. All and all, as much as I loathe my s4, I still have to stick with it because there is no other viable alternative that suit my needs currently. Probably won't be using s5 and try to avoid samsung like a plague next generation.
I went with the S4 GPe, and didn't look back. I looked at the Nexus 4, and it lacked features that I needed; no LTE, no 1080p screen, not enough storage or MicroSD to make up for the lack of storage, and no removable battery. Even the Nexus 5 won't have a removable battery, and while 32GB is an improvement, i need at least 48GB for my usage (I have 80GB on mine).
count me in.... i'm fedup with all samsung crapness... next will be a sony or a nexus for me
I'm done with Samsung definitely my next is gonna be something else, not because I think they suck or I'm against their practices but cause I've been using Samsung exclusively since the Galaxy S up till my current S4 and I think I need a break from Sammy!

Probably won't be using s5 and try to avoid samsung like a plague next generation.

iOS 7 isn't all that bad tbh from what I've seen of it, my sister just got herself an iPhone 5s, so like anything i had to have a good look at it & at one point i was actually tempted to get myself a 32Gb iPhone 5S, but the screen abit on the small side for my liking.
The camera on the otherhand is brilliant, really have to give Apple credit for this, the camera functions itself is very basic not many options to mess with, but soon as you take a picture 99% of the time the images are spot on & even stay looking decent in low light aswell, something i found impossible to do on the S4 was to get a decent image in low light as most of the time it came out as a blurry mess due to the camera lag, which the 5s doesn't have a problem with.
If the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen & iOS 8 allows widgets then i might be slightly tempted to switch next year & just have a Nexus 2014 tablet for my Android fix.
I'm new to Samsung. Can somebody tell me what the knox implementation is?

As long as they keep releasing phones with Google Edition roms available, I'll stay with Samsung. 1080p amoled + sdcard + switchable battery + decent camera + stock android = almost the perfect device for me (performance could still be better, but that is mostly an android problem (and don't give me **** about how your phone isn't lagging because it is, you just might not perceive it)).
Yup Sony for me next time. I've had every Galaxy S since the S1 but Samsung have really put me off.

Give me a nexus with an awesome camera, Bluetooth 4, beep n go, and a memory card slot and I'll give up Samsung.

I'll definitely stick to samsung, take note that this is just my personal opinion.
I like touchwiz, for me it's very simple, i've had the xperia z for a couple of months, s4 camera i would say is far better, and i don't like the way the sony launcher is. And definitely the screen on the sony ones has not impressed me at all, i even owned an xperia tx but on all sony is prone to quick scratches even the sony z1 has the same screen compared to samsung's screen, which are much better.
The only drawbacks i have against samsung is about the plastic body, and chinese manufacturers can easily make a copy of the phone!
well despite the fact that for the i9500 in terms of rom development is slow, i prefer stock rom! it's very stable!
so i will definitely stick to samsung unless s5 mess things up
i would then move to an htc phone maybe! :3

People on about knox bootloader etc being implemented and that samsung have locked there bootloaders, yeah its a blow but then again we have to remember that Sony,Lg and HTC also lock there bootloaders so its nothing new, yeah Sony screens arnt that great anymore, they look a bit washed out now,T was nice device,I loved my T before it got beer damage,in my opinion the Hardware of the s4 isnt to bad, yeah it is plastic which is a let down but the software is the issue, its heavy due to all the bloatware, slim roms work really well but is it my last Samsung phone,we shall see,at the moment i think HTC one is best alternative, the only thing that gets my back up with Samsung isnt with the s4,thats surprising but with the Galaxy Camera, lovely device but its like theyve forgoten it already ,no updates for past 6 months

Same here. Removable battery is priority #1 for me. SD card slot is a very close second. I also like the shape/profile of the GS4 over Nexus devices, but that is a minor concern compared to the previous points. LTE is also very nice, but not a necessity for me. If a Nexus device had removable battery and SD card, I'd probably choose it.
If there is another high end phone with removable battery, sd card slot, ir blaster and a Qualcomm SOC I will buy non Samsung.
But those things are more important than anything else.

Keep S4 for a while.
S4 is good choice. I have octa core version and with litlle work new jb 4.3 can be rooted and debloated. Knox applications should be removed ,possibly with aromafm in recovery before booting.
hello, I was wondering what phone to choose next to use daily and I thought of Nexus 4, but I'm a bit concerning since this phone is quite long in market and should I really think about buying one by myself? Maybe someone could give me advice about this matter?
I would, I bought mine in February. it's indeed for quite some time on the market but it's still on of the best and the support on XDA is unbelievable. I really love this phone!

How could anybody really tell if it's worth it?
Without the information of how much you can get it. How much other newer phones will cost you.... What are coming from.
For example a nexus 4 around 300 us dollars when a nexus 5 is new for 350 doesn't make much sense. But for a different price it can make a lot of sense.
I would say go for a
nexus 5 or a g2
In UAE both are for (400$) now so........
If can find a new n4 then.......
It have to be at 200$ if no, then don't buy it

Im coming from old xperia, so almost any new device would be an upgrade for me anyway.
N5 for $350 would be ok, but it is not possible for me to acquire it for that price (it is somewhere around $500).
I was considering lumia 920 /xperia SP and Nexus4, and all are basically in the same price range.
Well despite it's ****ty camera (compared to other smartphones in the same price range), it's the most obvious choice when it comes to functionality, performance, customization and support. If you can live with that, get a Nexus 4.
There are lots of similar threads, I don't see the point of opening a new one, considering all the phone in your price range are relatively dated ones too.
I bought mine 3 weeks ago and i am happy. 250 euros, new. The N5 is 330 euros.
Camera was bad at first, but the more i use it the better the photos are (call me crazy haha) so the pictures are very nice now. My ex-Note 2 had better autofocus and video, but the N4 camera is better in every other part.
i bought a nexus 4 on 1st january, u can also go for galaxy s3 , its quite a good phone with better camera and display,,
Sure the nexus 4 is a great phone with an unbelievable good support on xda. But i suggest to buy a Samsung galaxy s4, because it has some features, which were for some people are important. For example changeable battery, no softkeys , better display , sd card slot etc. But if you want a very good support and tons of roms then nexus ftw.

I'm constantly switching between my N4 and N5, and the difference is noticable, but only when you have both side by side. Nexus 4 is a very good device as it is, capable of handling most of what you throw at it. If you get a good price for it, go ahead. You won't regret it
get the neuxs 4, i just got a samsung s4 to compare it and i find it terrible, the s4 has alot of features but if your not staying on touchwiz your better off with a nexus, you can get used to not having a sd card.
After having a nexus4 you feel no need to upgrade, the n5 looks nice but i think battery isnt big enough for the 5 inches.

the reviews state its better on battery and faster to charge than the nexus4, reading reviews people expect a bigger battery due to the screen size, comparing other phones with 5inch displays, but vanilla android helps significantly
having a samsung s4, i was expecting the 2600mah battery to last a very long time, it was ok on standby and with touchwiz but all the bloat and features consume power, with the display on it was simple to trigger 1.8ghz and that would drain it faster, under clocking didnt help with UI tearing there are kernels and roms to help but i only like PA
i will wait for hybrid on PA before updating to kitkat
dont bother about nexus 6,7,8,9,10, if you want to future proof by a nokia 3310 and wait 10 years.

but a Nexus 7 and 10 already exist
Yeah it's much faster to charge and much slower to completely deplete the battery. Sure it could've had a bigger battery, but it could have gotten a high price too. People tend to forget the price of a nexus device and expect it to be the best of the best.
The nexus 4 is epic, I bought it in September and it is rooted and has a custom rom on it. It has quite good battery life, really good performance, and it keeps the stock android experience rather than Samsung phones clogging up the phone with TouchWiz.

But if you install a custom ROM like cm or Google edition, then its like a nexus with pure android + changeable battery+ SD card slot+ better camera and display. Don't understand me wrong ( i love my nexus 4 and its smooth and powerful, without any lags). I am not a Samsung fanboy but if i can choose today which phone i should take i would take the s4 or lg g2.

You can wait for a while and buy the Nexus 6.
When will it be released? somewhere around october/november? I'm afraid that would take too much time.
Trust me it's a great phone even today. I bought mine around Fall 2012 and although I had to change the battery once, it is still running extremely smooth with Kit Kat 4.4.2. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 5S but gave my dad the Nexus 4. He says it's really speedy and at times even faster than the iPhone. Good phone for the price.
