Smart mode for Wi-Fi broken or dumb? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Does anyone know the specifics as to how "Smart mode" for Wi-Fi works? by default it's turned on and I remember when I first got my device that Wi-Fi would turn on on its own when I was home. It would also turn on at work and despite turning Wi-Fi off at work it would turn itself on again. Does "Smart mode" require GPS and/or Location reporting to function properly? Are there any alternatives?

from my understanding (which maybe off) the smart mode will remember and recognize any previous wifi's that you have on your list and then when in range it will attempt to turn on wifi and connect to them.. what this leads me to believe is that it will be scanning ALL THE TIME for them in an attempt to turn on and connect, (because I had my location off so I don't think it uses GPS).
I had that "problem" where it would keep turning itself on and I didn't want that or want it killing my battery for a weak wifi connection, so I just turned off the smart mode to "fix" it.

so in other words Location reporting is necessary for thisbto work? while I have Smart mode on, I do have Location reporting off and for the most part it hasn't been turning on wi-fi scans anymore. wondering if turning Location reporting off when the screen is off makes Smart mode less effective...

sorry for the delay..
i'm not sure its needed.. I don't have mine turned on, I just had the smart mode on and it would turn the wifi on as I came into range. Which leads me to believe its constantly scanning. I could be wrong but that's the only conclusion I can draw unless I'm missing something.
are you saying that your wifi will not turn on if your location is off?

For the most part I've always had Smart mode on since it was on by default, however it's only recently that I've used Tasker to disable the Location Reporting when the screen is off... it's been a while since my wi-fi has turned on by itself and for the most part it's the only thing I can think of that I changed in relation to locations and wi-fi. I know there was an app on the BlackBerry that would turn on Wi-Fi based on location using cell tower locations and claimed that it didn't use any battery since it wasn't firing up the GPS or constantly scanning for Wi-Fi. This may be how Smart mode works except that it's reliant on Location Reporting. I suppose at this point in time my guess is as good as yours as to what/how Smart mode actually works.

Auto turn off WLAN after a certain time?

Hi,
Is anyone aware of a utility out there that will Auto turn off WLAN after a certain time period or after no network traffic for a time period. I 've dont some searching and googling but come up blank.
I am aware of the "Auto turn off WLAN if not connected" feature, but this does not stop my battery going flat when I forget to turn off WLAN while I am in the office and the access point is still in range.

How to turn wifi completely off??

Yes am wondering how can i turn wifi completely off??
If i use google maps and then i go back to home ..i can see the wifi widget toggle says that is 'turning off' yet..i had gone to settings and specify for it to be turn off?
I had gone to settings too and specify to only receive data from gps and not wireless (just in case is trying to scan for a wifi router)
so has any body come across this? or has anyone found a solution for this?
It's a bug with the current firmware, when you open google maps the wifi is enabled to help fix your location faster, it doesn't matter if you disabled it in the settings. It seems fixed in newer fw versions.
I noticed the same behaviour on my SGS too, but it's not due to Google Maps.
Everytime when I use the phone, the first few seconds it tries to turn off wifi. I made sure wifi is off everytime I finished using the phone or when I'm not in a wifi zone to save some battery.
This is pretty annoying.

[Q] How do you turn off 3G without turning off GPS?

Does anyone know how to turn off the 3G radio without turning off the GPS?
I know the airplane mode trick will turn off 3G but that also turns off GPS, which some Google apps need.
I hope Google gives us dedicated radio toggles in 3.1.
Try unchecking 'Data enabled' in mobile network settings

That is the correct way to do it.
Airplane mode really should be used when you want ALL of the wireless turned off, including wifi. It's strange that it lets you turn it back on while in airplane mode. I guess it makes sense for those planes that now have wifi.

Also how i use my phone overseas without having to worry about a big ass bill.
Are you sure GPS is off in Airplane Mode? I run in A-M too when I'm on WiFi, and I've definately seen the "GPS on" indicator come up when doing something that needs my location.
But to be sure, I downloaded "GPS Test" from the market, turned on Airplane Mode after getting it, and GPS test was able to see some 6 satellites (inside- we have some really nice hardware!).
I don't think GPS is off when in A-M.

Well, it actually does kill-switch everything when enabled- which is what it's supposed to do, but it's a good thing that it allows selective re-enabling of BT and WiFi.
Besides, GPS is a reciever (unlike BT/WiFi which also Xmit), but while I'm aware of the heterodyne issue, that leakage is FAR smaller, and the only way to fix that is to turn off the device altogether.

Disable cell signal

Anyone know if I can disable the cell signal automatically on the unrooted nexus 6P?
I know I can pop it in airplane mode and then turn back on bluetooth & wifi but I want to automate this process so that when I'm at work it will toggle the cell radio off.
Any ideas?
Ok, so I setup tasker to turn on Wifi and Bluetooth when I put the phone in airplane mode. It's not ideal but it's a start.
If anyone's got a better idea, please let me know
I am assuming I can't turn off just the cell without root.
Can't you use NFC tags for tasks like this?
I can't find anything saying it would work airplane mode or turning the cell off though.

Turn on WIFI automatically not working

The wifi setting "turn on wifi automatically" in the advance settings use to work like a champ but for some reason it won't turn off when i'm outiside of my wifi signal range. I can turn off wifi manually and when i get within a saved wifi signal it will turn wifi on.
Has anyone experienced this?
Any advice will be appreciated!
My WiFi never turned off automatically on its own. I had to create Bixby Routines to turn WiFi off after leaving my apartment and turn it back on when I got home.
My phone would constantly be connecting to any available XFINITY Hotspots which is probably why that setting never worked for me the same way it worked for you.
Could your phone be doing something similar and connecting to Hotspots or open WiFi networks without you realizing it?
Mine has never turned off automatically either, it does turn on automatically when im in range, but i have also setup Bixby routines so im not sure if it turns off automatically now or not.
My hot spot is disabled but before this last update my wifi would turn on and off automatically. Oh Well luckily we have bixby routines lol
Thanks guys!
