How to turn wifi completely off?? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Yes am wondering how can i turn wifi completely off??
If i use google maps and then i go back to home ..i can see the wifi widget toggle says that is 'turning off' yet..i had gone to settings and specify for it to be turn off?
I had gone to settings too and specify to only receive data from gps and not wireless (just in case is trying to scan for a wifi router)
so has any body come across this? or has anyone found a solution for this?

It's a bug with the current firmware, when you open google maps the wifi is enabled to help fix your location faster, it doesn't matter if you disabled it in the settings. It seems fixed in newer fw versions.

I noticed the same behaviour on my SGS too, but it's not due to Google Maps.
Everytime when I use the phone, the first few seconds it tries to turn off wifi. I made sure wifi is off everytime I finished using the phone or when I'm not in a wifi zone to save some battery.
This is pretty annoying.

T-Mobile HD2: Wifi Keeps Turning On Automatically

So I've noticed this over the past few days since I've been flying and in bad service areas. When there is no network access, such as being in Airplane mode, or in a no service area, my Wifi automatically turns on. I have Activesync polling every 15 minutes, so I can only imagine that the phone is trying to access the network, is unable, and starts up Wifi.
Is anyone else having this problem, and does anyone know how to turn it off?
Thanks.
are you using 3rd party software to toggle Wifi? (e.g. Wifitoggle) It seems that only the Comm.Manager can turn on/off Wifi properly.
I've used the HD2 Connectionz shotcuts. Even without using those it was happening, though.
I am having the same issue as well.......anyone fixed this?
me 2.
But I've only noticed this after using a Wifi toggle.
I had it after installing the home tab quicklink toggles, uninstalled it, everything OK again.
Now I've installed the End key with Wifi... and the problem returns...
I'm going to check my dialing rules, maybe that will help.
I have been having this issue too over the last 2 or 3 weeks, i have no wifitoggle or anything like that installed. I turn my GPRS off when i have finished using my phone and if the phone cant get a gprs connection when locked it seems to auto turn the wifi on in the hopes that you are next to one of the few wifi spots you have enabled on the phone!
This needs looking at and fixing cos i find my wifi connection drains the battery big time esp when there is nothing to connect to as i am at work!
guys i m having the same issue ..i think its a bug in hd..2 i just got the phone 2 days..ago any solution
wifi
This issue still hasn't been resolved in the 3.14 rom with 2.14.50.04 radio....
using energy rom september 23/24 21679
I believe it's related to the wi-fi toggle in cht, still testing...
edit: The wifi issue IS solved when using Comm manager to turn wifi off, not using the toggle as stated by ozkaya
have the same problem, did some research on this and for me anyway its is, I have push email set up from google and if i am on a phone call wi-fi turns on to keep the connection alive, also if i have no service then again wi-fi to keep connection active
Anyone found the solution for this issue already? I have got the Raphael, but the issue is the same. Activesync with gmail, it checks for mails every 30 minutes. Whenever there is no network it automatically turns on the WiFi. I replaced Radio on my device and the problems are not too often, but it has only something to do with the strength of signal. For me this happens only when I have ActiveSync synchronization set up. If I use IMAP all is ok.
EDIT: I think the issue is about toggle buttons in CHT. When I got to the connection manager a switch off the WiFi there instead of by the CHT Toggle button, the problem disappeared.

This is definetly the case, the issue only hapoens when switching off wifi using Cht toggle. Use com manager and alk is ok

Connect to WiFi network timeout?

Hello. I'm sure that this must have been discussed but I cannot find the answer using search. As is surely normal, I use WiFi within the home and GPRS when there is no WiFi available. If WiFi is connected and I go out for a short while, then when I get back in a WiFi area, the WiFi is still connected. However, if I go away for a long time, and GPRS is used for perhaps a regular weather update, then the WiFi disconnects and has to be manually reconnected upon return to home. This leads to GPRS being used in a WiFi area unnecessarily if you forget to re-connect WiFi. Is there a WiFi connection timeout value or any other setting that can be changed? My old TyTN II did not have this problem. Thanks.
Try this CAB
It disable disconnecting WiFi when phone is in sleep mode and with this phone automaticly connects to WiFi when Leo will be in range.
Thanks Franq_23_pl. I think that the CAB just stops WiFi disconnecting when the device is in sleep mode. That will just drain the battery, surely? My old TyTN used to disable WiFi when in sleep mode, but as soon as you switched it on again, WiFi would be enabled and it would connect if in range. The problem with my HD2/Leo is that if I am away from my WiFi for some considerable time (ie, most of the day), then when I get back home and switch the device on, WiFi is disabled, and I have to manually toggle in on. So my question is..... What are the circumstances that cause WiFi to disable itself, and Is there some way of stopping it happening?
OIC now. I think you having some battery saving app and this app turning off WiFi when iz not used. What apps or registry mods you have installed on Leo?
You have the same behavior after hard reset?
My Leo don't disable WiFi. When i go outside (for ex to work) and back after few hours my Leo connecting to my home wireless network automaticly.
I remember, that i had the same problem like you and it was caused by app, which had duty to save battery.

[Troubleshoot Discussion] all SGS WiFi problems here!

i dont think this is a SGS specific problem, possibly an app is doing this but cant figure out which one, during the day usually when i take out of sleep the wifi will come on for a moment then switch off, other times it stays on.
I have uninstalled Locale, and now use tasker but there are no settings I have entered for wifi, is there a way of figuring out which app could be doing this?
I have the some problem and don't know what it is
You can go to options and then go to wifi advanced options
(I have a Dutch phone so i don't know to correct name on English language on your phone)
you can select "never go to sleep" or somthing like that.
But is still have the problem
I'm also finding that I have to detach/reattached the wifi connection quite regularly. I'm using it on a 'n' network.

this is bug in the system.. it is the location doing.. it any app trying to get your location.. you are supposed to be able to turn it off by unchecking use wireless to determin location under wifi.. but it does not always seem to work.
I think the problem is with Google Maps (or Navigation, I don't remember). When I open it and starts to fix my location, the wifi will turn on althought I disabled in the settings the use of wifi networks to help the GPS. In theory, when you close GMaps/Navigation the wifi will turn off, but sometimes it will just leave it on.
It doesn't happen with other GPS apps like GPS Status, etc...
Will check what happens with Sygic later!
yes i have also tried unchecking check wireless networks for location, maybe switch off latitude?
its really bugging me as sometimes it gets stuck on switching off and you then cant do anything, and if you really do need wifi have to restart phone.
edit: switched off latitude, see if this is the culprit
I don't think Latitude has anything to do. I never used it and I have the same problem.
i have the same problem! its sooo annoying...
For the record, i'm using firmware XXJF3
If someone is using a newer firmware please check if the bug is already fixed.
not fixed in jf5 or jf7
just had to reboot stuck turning off. if anyone has a workaround or what service to kill to do so without rebooting please post.
I have all sorts of problems with wifi... keeps turning itself on when I disable it, keep losing connection, drains battery, locks the phone up (i think its wifi doing this) etc...
I tried wifi fixer app, and you can see how many times it disconnects/reconnects even after disabling sleep etc

i have location with wifi on. it disconnects automatically only when i'm not in the range of a saved network. Then it will connect to this network and stay connected
Any one else have any theories on how to fix this?
I think the problem is with the "Use wireless networks" setting not taking any effect on the phone (I have it disabled).
Having wifi turned off, if I open some GPS app wifi will turn itself on automatically. I think it is because it searches for nearby APs to fix the location more quickly. The problem is that the location is not as exact as with pure GPS. When I quit the app wifi will turn off automatically. This happens even if I have unchecked the above system setting.
A workaround that worked for me was to disable wifi AFTER opening the app that uses GPS, and the location was more precise.
Note that I tried this with Google Maps and Sygic Mobile Maps, so it seems like a system-level bug rather than app bug.
Anybody has noticed the same behavior?
My wifi is very annoying.
Every few minutes while I use e.g. the internet browser the connection just dies.
It often happens during loading of a web page or updating in the weather app.
My solution so far is to tun wifi off and on again, then it will work for another few minutes before it suddenly hangs again.

I have exactly the same issue. Which network system do you use? My router supprts "n" standard, maybe that cause the issue?
I think I might have fixed it by first turning it on and then turning it off(wireless location that is). Never managed to open up Google Maps before without the phone enabling wifi as well.
EDIT: Oh, and I'm running the custom ROM from Modaco.

Tried it on stock ROM version JF3 and still the same issue.
Regarding MCR, I didn't see in the info on modaco forum anything related to this GPS issue, maybe Paul fixed something without knowing?

Could be, but most importantly - Google Maps is finally usable again(for me at least)! Did you enable the "Use Wireless Networks" option and then open up google maps or did you just toggle it quickly?

Smart mode for Wi-Fi broken or dumb?

Does anyone know the specifics as to how "Smart mode" for Wi-Fi works? by default it's turned on and I remember when I first got my device that Wi-Fi would turn on on its own when I was home. It would also turn on at work and despite turning Wi-Fi off at work it would turn itself on again. Does "Smart mode" require GPS and/or Location reporting to function properly? Are there any alternatives?
from my understanding (which maybe off) the smart mode will remember and recognize any previous wifi's that you have on your list and then when in range it will attempt to turn on wifi and connect to them.. what this leads me to believe is that it will be scanning ALL THE TIME for them in an attempt to turn on and connect, (because I had my location off so I don't think it uses GPS).
I had that "problem" where it would keep turning itself on and I didn't want that or want it killing my battery for a weak wifi connection, so I just turned off the smart mode to "fix" it.

so in other words Location reporting is necessary for thisbto work? while I have Smart mode on, I do have Location reporting off and for the most part it hasn't been turning on wi-fi scans anymore. wondering if turning Location reporting off when the screen is off makes Smart mode less effective...
sorry for the delay..
i'm not sure its needed.. I don't have mine turned on, I just had the smart mode on and it would turn the wifi on as I came into range. Which leads me to believe its constantly scanning. I could be wrong but that's the only conclusion I can draw unless I'm missing something.
are you saying that your wifi will not turn on if your location is off?

For the most part I've always had Smart mode on since it was on by default, however it's only recently that I've used Tasker to disable the Location Reporting when the screen is off... it's been a while since my wi-fi has turned on by itself and for the most part it's the only thing I can think of that I changed in relation to locations and wi-fi. I know there was an app on the BlackBerry that would turn on Wi-Fi based on location using cell tower locations and claimed that it didn't use any battery since it wasn't firing up the GPS or constantly scanning for Wi-Fi. This may be how Smart mode works except that it's reliant on Location Reporting. I suppose at this point in time my guess is as good as yours as to what/how Smart mode actually works.

Wifi constantly turns on.

Constantly have wifi turning on.
Have not updated to KK and have just been bypassing the install. Not rooted or anything, completely stock. Started happening a week or so ago and my apps automatically update through google play. Is there any ideas?
I've checked/unchecked/rechecked every single option in wifi/data/network that may pertain to keeping the wifi on. None of them have worked and it still does it. Is there any way to figure out what app is ticking wifi on and off through a log file or anything?
See above,their problem was avast.
Stop auto update in market settings.

Settings - WiFi - Advance - Untick Scanning Always available
Have checked/unchecked/rechecked and still does.
Check your GPS settings, set them to GPS only. If there's an app that use an active GPS for location services, and GPS is set to WiFi + GPS, it turns on the WiFi.
As for auto updating apps, you can disable that in Google Play's settings. (Which does mean you need to update them manually).
