[Q] Unable to use Knox Apps after root. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, newbie here.
I rooted my Note 3 a while back and tripped my Knox counter to 0x1. I have a lot of files I had stored in Knox and currently unable to access the Knox app at all.
Is there anyway I could recover or backup these files in a way?
I previously emailed samsung and they responded with a definitive NO.
Please help!

Knox is disabled when you modify or root your device!
Titanium backup your knox, reset or flash new firmware then root again and restore knox.
Or... Google it for millions of solutions....

Crap, seriously that is a disaster.
Knox is an encrypted container, everything inside it is encrypted with special private key set up first time you use Knox. The security warranty of Knox is that every attempt to modify/tamper the phone even if they are successful SHOULD NOT be able to read what inside Knox, thus those attempts will result in deletion of such private key and also mark it Knox 0x1.
Private key will be generated new if Knox can be re-establish, for that u need to contact Samsung Center, even with new private key NO ONE will ever be able to recover the old data (thus new key for new data).
The premise is that no one on earth should be able to do recover corrupted Knox otherwise Knox will never get that certificate to be used on Enterprise business in US.
Losing that private key is the same as complete wipe out of your data, in other words it is there in encrypted bits but it is no longer readable by anyone on earth.

Are you positive this would work? I have tried to google but haven't found ONE single article about this.

Knox security container is disabled FOREVER once you root your device...
As you can gain root access then you can also, theoretically, gain access to the knox container. You still have Knox floating around like a bad smell telling you that apps are trying to access root directory and stopping this from happening but it is now a useless app...

Yes. it is stated (assuming OP using CF-autoroot, because he never wrote which method he used to root his device).
From CF-Autoroot OP :
"The KNOX warranty status change is permanent, and a service center may deny warranty based on this flag - even if the other flags are reset correctly. The KNOX flag being tripped may also prevent certain Samsung KNOX features from working (enterprise security features). If this is something you care about, use a root method not based on custom kernels or recoveries, like a modified system partition. These are possible, but I don't personally make them, so look around!"

I have same problem too after root. So if i unroot, can i make Knox working again? I have ~10GB personal data in it. I have to recover them.
There should be a way...
P.S : Knox app still installed. Still has a shortcut on notification bar. When i access it flashes up and returning back. I upgraded from Knox v1 to v2, one or two week ago. Old knox app still exits in app manager and appdrawer. But cant access old one alrady. AppMonster backed up install files. Tried to install again. It was succesful. But still same...

And containers still in appmanager...

It's about flash counter i guess...
https://www.samsungknox.com/en/blog...ox-enabled-devices-and-knox-warranty-void-bit
There are two possible scenarios:
A new KNOX container can no longer be created on such a device
The data encrypted and stored in an existing KNOX container can no longer be retrieved
Everything else outside the container should work just as before.

On Snapdragon devices there is no way to reset knox counter, at least yet, but propably will never be. About Exynos I can't say since I don't own any.
When Knox Warranty Void is 0x1, you can't use Knox or recover data thats been there EVER.
Knox works just like it should in this case. You people should read, read, and read much more before you do anything with your devices, at least if you really don't know what you are doing.

First thing I did when I purchased my phone was root and uninstall bloatware, that included Knox.

I still think that no matter what you do, you can't restore content from "locked" KNOX container.

It's all about modified system. I thought if i reset that counter without wipe, i can use it again... I did. Resetted counter. But still same. Followed that guide. System now untouched. All Knox data has gone... Nothing to do. I won't use it anymore... Thanks guys.

If you performed a KNOX backup from WITHIN the KNOX container, then you can restore that to another KNOX-compatible phone that DOES NOT have the KNOX counter at 0x1. This is the ONLY way to get KNOX data back.
The filename for a KNOX backup will be called KnoxBackup_KNOX.zip and will be stored on the phone or external storage - do a search for the filename.
That is it...end of story.

Yes, it was called root de la vega... But, honestly... Don't hold your breath... Root de la vega was working on an earlier rom version of the Note 3... After that... Samsung patched the roms, and there has been nothing ever since...

Such a shame at what Samsung has done. They were so friendly up until the s4. We'll see I'll test drive the note make sure everything is in proper order then root it. Has samsung been known to honor warranty with the flag set if it's obvious manufacture defect?

It depends on the country from what i understand..
Imo if you show them that you know your rights, then you can "make" them honor their warranty...
And always always ask to speak with the manager...
Researching your rights as a consumer on the web (depending on your country) also helps a lot.
Im 90% certain that there's a EU directive that forbids sammy to pull these bull____ on us... Especially if we are asking them to fix a defect that is non-knox related...
In my other Samsung devices, rooting by Chainfire disabled screen mirroring. Can someone who has rooted check that, please?

Lol I'll start my research [emoji14]
it depends on the carrier, and how you talk to them about your issue; I have NEVER had a warranty issue for ANY phone, and that was with Sprint, ATT, and now T-Mobile. Can't speak to Verizon, as I hate them with a passion, and wouldn't take a free phone if they offerred one.
every time I returned a phone for a warranty issue, they were always unlocked, rooted, or s-off
here again, if you are nice, and polite, you shouldn't have issues
if you come across as a jerk, well, you know what will happen..

Actually, there were other methods after root de la vega. I have a method here for the Note 3 that uses towelroot and an older vulnerable kernel. You simply flash the older kernel in odin, use towelroot, then flash the new current kernel back and you're rooted.
Don't think of Knox being tripped as a loss of warranty- think of it as a loss of Knox! Knox is an app on your phone that will no longer work (ever!) if you trip Knox. Research Knox and make sure you have no need for it before you decide to get rid of that functionality. If you work at a company that lets you use your own phone to receive work e-mail etc and would like to keep apps and e-mail on a separate secure container "work side" of your phone (Knox) then don't trip Knox. If you don't care about Knox, trip it and forget it.
It's just not fair to people to leave this valuable piece of information out when telling them to root or in the how-to root threads. They can't revert after the case and some don't realize they need it until they present their phones to their IT staff at work and are told their phone's Knox integrity has been compromised -meaning it's no longer able to be used for that purpose (Knox warranty 0x1). Also, if you just want a secure container for some personal apps and pics etc, you can use that Knox container for that without actually using any work information.
Here's a quick video to demonstrate Knox 2.0s use.

Does this look dodgy?

Hi everyone,
I've been on holiday and come back and found my missus has ordered a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G901F from ebay for my eldest kid. Now I don't like buying mobiles on ebay as I find that some are a somewhat iffy or risky, but the missus wasn't aware of this risk. Anyway to cut a long story short she did check mend, imei.info checks and all that seem to be fine. She's even already registered the phone on the police immobilize website.
However now that I've had time to take a look at the phone, although it seems to have been factory reset, there are a few processes running that look a bit dodgy for me. Therefore I would be most grateful if someone could clarify these are safe and if there is anything I need to do to make sure that the device has not got any malware or software that possibly can lock down the phone.
SETTINGS>DEVICE ADMINISTRATORS:-
Android Device Manager - not Active
Lookout - not Active
Computrace security policy - not Active
SETTINGS>DOWNLOADED:-
sec.abt
SETTINGS>RUNNING:-
sec.abt
SecurityManagerService
com.sec.bcservice
IPsec Service
These settings and processes could all be innocent, but I'd rather be safe than sorry as the last thing I want is someone 6 months later remotely blocking the phone or being able to locate the phone.
If anyone can recommend an app or any other tool that I can use to scan for any malware/device locking software as a precaution, then please let me know ASAP.
Thanks in Advance
I don't know about Computrace Security, but Lookout shouldn't be on ANY phone.
Those look like the typical running processes that run on samsung phones. I had the same ones on my GS5, but was able to uninstall (or freeze) them after I rooted the phone.
Thanks rekt & mike. How can I be definitely sure there is nothing iffy?? Is there a way of scanning for device locking software???
Anyone have anymore detailed information please? What can I do to make sure this device doesn't have any hidden software?

flash yourself a rom (stock or otherwise) and do a full wipe. Then you'll be definitely sure
To respond to your original question, those services look normal. Samsung puts lots of security stuff on their phones. Lookout is Samsung's security software (used to be called KNOX)
IPsec service is built into android. Computers have it too.
I'd still wipe and flash something else, just to be sure. It's the first thing I did when I got my G900T. That being said, most used phones come from people that never did any rooting/flashing/etc so I'm sure you're fine.

Thank you Sean, Is it possible to keep the original rom, rather than a custom rom? it's under warranty with samsung until 2017 and I believe flashing a rom would void the warranty.
Currently the rom installed on the phone is:- ktu84p.g901fxxu1ank3 which I assume is the original rom.

I included a link with a guide along with my last post...
download your stock image from sammobile, download latest odin, put phone in download mode, connect usb, then use odin from your pc to flash the image.
When you put your phone into download mode, it will give you the status of the warranty bit. 0x0 means it's still valid.

Thank you for your help guys. Really sorry for the late reply as I haven't been very well. Yes, when I put the phone in download mode, the warranty void say 0x0. I flashed the stock fw (G901FXXU1BOC4_G901FEVR1BOC4_EVR) which was for my phone. Odin 3.10.7 seems to have successfully flashed it as it said "PASSED". However when the phone rebooted, all my settings such as wi-fi passwords and the way I had set the apps originally were still there! Is this normal? I feel the fw never properly flashed.
Can anyone help me? Thanks!
Anyone be able to help? Thanks!
I think the firmware flashed correctly as you said.....The only time odin wipes any data is if you flash a 3 part 'test' firmware or if you flash a pit file.....
That type of firmware isn't commonly available.....I've only ever seen them for the S2 and one of the Notes.......
So you finding user data intact is probably more common than you think....
The user data would have disappeared if you'd had to factory reset after the flash, but as you didn't have to, it's still there...
I doubt there's anything to worry about unless you start to see instability on your phone.....In which case, factory reseting is probably advisable......

I Thanks again Keith. I have a dodgy charging port, so got it repaired and reflashed again last night and this time it wiped out everything. I also went into recovery mode and did factory/cache wipe and this has now given me a totally fresh firmware.
But the sec.Abt file in downloads is still there so I assume this is a safe file that Google or Samsung download to your phone?
Just done a bit of digging via Google and although nobody seems to know what it does, it does seem to have been downloaded to other Samsung devices too.....
From what I read, it seems to be confined to Lollipop firmwares. So if you're worried about it, a flash back to KitKat might get rid of it......

Thanks very much Keith. I guess I'm being a bit too paranoid. I best leave it at that and be happy, but much appreciate the help and advice given.
I know this doesn't relate to the topic, but I have a couple more issues that I need clarifying and would be most grateful if these could be resolved:-
1. The Samsung S5 runs extremely hot - even though it seems to hardly do anything. I noticed that the ram being used is approx 1.3gb out of 1.8gb, but I can't clear it like in previous phones...can you recommend any app thats good at killing any tasks?
2. Even though I've got a new charging port, it still seems that the USB cable is somewhat loose, although not as bad as what I had previously...any suggestions on what could be done about this?
3. Does rooting void warranty?

About rooting galaxy s4

Hello,
I was wondering if the application "kingroot" is a good and trustable option to trust my device?
I also saw a site "oneclickroot.com" that looked intresting but after research I saw it's not trustable that they are out of your money.
Or what would you guys advice me?
It's not for intalling roms and so on. Just for other options that I want to root my device.
Greetings
CF-Auto-Root. It's the only way to go. And you can't without a PC.
ah owkey, and "kingroot" is unsafe then?
Oh and what about unrooting the device is that also possible with cf auto root?
And what about towelroot??

Towelroot will simply not work on 5.0 (will reboot the phone after a while from clicking "make it ra1n" but no root access delivered)
For 4.4 you need GNF1 or older kernel for it to work - see HERE if you have newer version but still KK.
Ah ok and kingroot is also no option?
I m searching for the easyest way.
And is your way also possible to unroot?
The easiest way is CF-Autoroot, period. Flash it with the Odin software, let it deliver its payload, and you're done. If you want to unroot afterward, simply uninstall SuperSU.
Ah owkey so it's possible to unroot the device.
Will my warranty then not be rooted.
It's about galaxy s4
Some people talk about "trig Knox flag to 0x1?"
What is that???
Is it something with the warranty???
Because I don't want that my warranty is woided.
If I use your method and I must remove it with time the root.
Is this the application that I will need to reset the trig knox flag to 0x0 ???

Greetings
I believe it was @zelendel who brought this up on another thread, but he asks people what root is and why they need it. Since you're clearly new at this, I'm taking a page from his book.
1. What is root?
2. Why do you need root?
If you cannot answer both questions, you have no business nor need of rooting your S4. That said, there is an entire thread on Knox in the General forum that you should be reading if you want to know more. However, regardless of the methods used, if you root the Knox flag will be tripped. Once tripped, it stays tripped. There is no way to reset it, period.

Knox is some kind of security crap from Samsung. You can find more about it in the s4 general section or by googling it.
Knox default status is 0x0.
Tripping knox to 0x1 will voind your warranty.
1. rooting the the device is to have acces to the root of the phone so you can do more with your phone.
2. I want to root it because I want to have following options enabled at my phone.
* Moving programs to my sd card (not possible anymore without rooting)
* More control over 3G/4G/Wifi/Gps (from my computer) when phone is lost
* Set a security code on the phone factory reset (with avast root edition)
* Using less battery to let greenpower auto disable the 3G or wifi and so on.
At the moment this are the most important things for me.
Flashing roms and so on doesn't intrest me now , because everything is working fine.

Fantastic. The reason I asked was to get you to slow down a bit and think about what you're doing. Your previous posts in the thread were all over the place and gave the impression that you didn't know what you were doing.
Back to Knox, do you still have a warranty on the S4? Most units will be out of warranty, in which case it won't matter if you trip the Knox flag. If you're trying to preserve your warranty, it probably will not be possible due to changes to Android.

Well yes I do have 2 year warranty because I did bought the galaxy s4 just 2 weeks ago, that's why I don't want to root it.
But if I could root it and still have the warranty on one or other way or set it back to normal , well that changes everything.
There are to much cool featers with this rooting stuff.
And also because I can't copy any files anymore to the sd card , stupidest change in android I've seen :'o

So apparently you're still on Android 4.4.2, since Android 5.x removed the MicroSD card restriction. Is that correct?
As long as you are NOT on Android 5.x, you can root without tripping Knox, by downgrading the bootloader and modem to an earlier version, then running Towelroot. The drawback is that you won't be able to upgrade to Android 5.x. OTA updates won't function, and using Odin to upgrade wipes the /system partition, which will cost you root.
Regardless of the warranty, I personally would trip Knox and not lose any sleep over it.
Hey
Sorry for my double post.
Euh no, android 5.0.1 was already pre installed on this phone.
It is galaxy s4 black edition gt-i9515
Hmm maybe I must wait for a moment maybe there will come new safer methods
Greetings
The fact you have a value edition S4 changes things. You might as well flash CF-Autoroot now, because there are no safe methods for you. There are no custom ROMs either, but I digress.
@darrendude1: Rule number 1 of this site is to search before you post. The entire reason the rule is present is to avoid having people ask the same questions over and over again, simply because the question has likely been already answered. It applies regardless of whether you are a noob, senior member, recognized developer, or any other title the site may bestow.
In the case of the OP, you clearly didn't read the thread, because I explained to the OP exactly why I asked the questions. He understood why I asked them, and from there we have continued the conversation. To a noob, I would hope they would take rule 1 to heart, and actually did some research into what root is so they could actually explain why they think they need it.

Health,Knox says im Rooted after flashing Stock frimware?

Hello, i was rooted for the past month and decided to go back to stock,
after flashing stock that i downloaded from SamFrim to my Region(Israel) i can't use the Samsung apps, they say im rooted.
i did restore my apps and settings from my samsung cloud, could this be the issue?
Thanks
may be because it tripped the knox counter. But i believe that only stop you from using samsung pay. Maybe try re-flash the stock. or use different source? samsung-update?

If you performed a factory reset, and flashed stock firmware from SamFirm, you will no longer be rooted.
However, your Knox status is tripped to 0x1 (instead of 0x0) permanently. This cannot be changed, you will no longer be able to use Knox, or any application protected by Knox such as Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, Secure Folder.. etc.
Your warranty is also void, since a Knox status of 0x1 voids the warranty and is checked at every repair center.
You are not able to reset the knox status, ever. But, some methods exist to fool apps to think that it wasn't tripped to use Samsung Health etc using custom roms / Magisk etc.

As I said, you can use Magisk Hide to trick some apps, but the Knox status will always remain tripped.
Aka if you unroot and remove magisk, you will (again) not be able to use those apps.
And there is no guarantee that Samsung won't patch the apps to break Magisk Hide.
Knox status is a hardware fuse that gets permanently tripped.

It's true. And it is also heavily frowned upon by the community as it serves no purpose. Most apps can be replaced by other 3rd party apps, but specificaly samsung pay is ofcourse made by samsung and can not be replaced. Best thing you can do is keep using a non-stock rom that hides your knox (most do) so you can continue to use your apps that check for the knox-status.
Don't stare yourself blind on the loss of warranty. Samsung does not make consumer laws and they have to follow your local laws in this, no matter what your knox status is and what they want you to believe.
In general, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just remember for your next phone that Samsung is not the first choice for power users who like to root and take full ownership of their devices.

Thank you for your words stranger, i will not apologize for wanting control
In the US software modifications will not cause denial of warranties UNLESS the software modifications can be proven in court to have caused the hardware failure.
Knox is the dumbest move Samsung has done in recent memory. It was originally designed for integrity for businesses who wanted to use an Android phone with extra security. I really wonder how successful this was vs the headache it's caused for other users.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have an S7 Edge and never did root in it, but when installing the Nougat ZTO rom of Brazil it triggered the Knox Ox1, I took my device in the technical assistance and they refused by the hands in him, never I did root, I still have 2 months of guarantee So I made a complaint on a site here in Brazil and Samsung will exchange my cell phone card courtesy.
Your cell phone happened the same thing that happened to mine, look for a consumer protection organization and use your rights to have the repair.

Knox is the greatest thing Samsung made.
Businesses need solutions like Knox to maintain integrity and manage employee phones.
In addition, for the consumers, it enables advanced access to the firewall and such without root, for apps like AdHell and DisconnectPro to exist and block ads without root.
Like it or not, a rooted device is a compromised device. There is no telling if a device that was ever rooted and tampered with is safe anymore, for businesses this is not a joke.
You have to remember that people who root their smartphones are an incredibly small minority.
Hi, I bought an s8 with stock firmware flashed onto it and the knox is tripped. Little bit sickened because I didn't know this at the time of buying it and of course have only recently discovered the importance of Knox in relation to certain apps and services that Samsung provides. My question is, is it possible to update the firmware to the lastest version OTA or will it just keep saying I have the latest version installed? lastly is my phone technically rooted even though it has stock firmware? Now that knox is tripped anyway, should I just go ahead and use a custom rom?
Thanks in advance.

But to flash a custom rom you have to have root privileges.
[EDIT] JUST noticed ZTO is the stock rom. Nevermind my post
I've reflashed older Galaxy S models and it reset the Knox counter.
So my warranty is void after going root on stock?
Is there any way to recover that?

The only way would be getting lucky, I guess.
You would have to flash the oldest available firmware via Odin and hope that works. I had success doing this with Galaxy S4 Minis but Knox was merely at the bootloader level back then, and was not fully developed as a security suite.

No Fortune 500 company would be caught dead using an Android phone. Knox isn't nearly enough to wipe away Android's bad reputation as being hackable, and this forum's existence is proof enough of that.

There is no way (or getting lucky) to bypass Knox when rooting since the S7.
Knox is hardware fuse, good luck 'resetting it'.
Except you're incorrect. Knox enabled phones are used in companies all over the world including the united states government. That's the point of certifying it by the NSA in the first place.
All data in knox secured partitions (containers) like Secure Folder (and all of enterprise knox enabled devices) is wiped if the device is rooted. There is absolutely ZERO way to bypass Knox tripping when rooting and tampering with the device.
If anything, this forum is proof that no one has been able to bypass Knox's detection in any meaningful way.

Knox apps destroyed

Hi just got my s8 plus and I'm just wondering I want to root and been searching around about what tripping knox brakes but keep getting mixed views
I will be rooting and flashing a custom Rom and kernel would someone be kind enough to list every app that get broken and is not fixed even by a custom Rom or kernel (like iris scanner,s Health, ect)
As I really want to root but don't want to damage too many apps in the process
Many thanks also my model is the SM-G955F

No unfortunately not, Knox is a fuse on the motherboard. Once tripped it burns. So far only way to get Knox back would be to change the motherboard

Yes but the apps and system dont read the statuts directly from the bootloader but from the kernel, this is why there is a kernel that has faked 0x0 knox, but the fuse is still blown yes.

You can use terminal to change Knox to 0x0 but still. S health will work and some apps, but not secure folder or Samsung pay
so, knox tripped and rooted on stock unmodified rom :
safety net fail : (no apps like samsung pay, Pokemon go, Mario run, snapchat login ,etc)
no system updates
samsung apps won't work : samsung pass, samsung pay, Shealth, secure folder, issue with private mode on samsung internet,
if you use a custom rom most of stuff CAN be fixed like
safety net pass with magisk hide (root)
s health work
private mode on internet
BUT some are permanent and can't be fixed even with custom rom so once rooted , no way back except buy new phone
samsung pass, samsung pay, secure folder
Remember that once you are rooted and knox counter is tripped (0x1), its irreversible and can't be "unrooted" or be official and reset knox counter even by flashing stock firmware though odin because since galaxy s7 the knox counter is not software related but its hardware. its an electronic fuse and if you root or install custom recovery etc the electronic fuse will broke and broken fuse mean tripped knox counter. this is because even flashing stock firmware is useless, as most of Samsung apps knox related don't only check root but also the knox counter, so unroot won't help. so think twice before rooting your device

its useless, Samsung knox apps dont check if they see 0x0 but it just put some electricity though the knox fuse and if it get though it its ok but if the electricity dont success to get through the fuse it mean its broken so I mean knox is 0x1 and rooted.
fake knox counter is useless as every knox eligibility checks are hardware and not software. fake 0x0 is only for you ^^to reset the counter only way is the replace the motherboard, even Samsung can't reset it

There has to be some hardware abstraction layer, you can't just test the fuse each time, that would mean that the apps have really low level rights/api to do so wich is risky. The bootloader tests the fuse and writes the value to the kernel, wich can be faked to make some apps work.
If the value is checked by apps then there is a software value other than the hardware status.
But dont quote me on that.
For apps that dont work i think there is some selinux policies issues or root gets detected.
Why would devs include the fake 0x0 counter if it was useless ?
darn making me think twice about rooting now i mainly want it for debloating, apps ad blocking,viper4android,and a few mods like stereo speaker and camera mod

In my opinion android pay is better and it's supported in many places. But that's my opinion.
If you root I recommend rooting with magisk. So you can use magisk hide and modules. Good luck and post here if you need any help :good:
