is there news about the bootloader lock?

Does anyone can verify if there is bootloader lock on USA/CAN version of Galaxy Note 3?
We all know that the ATT&VZW version of the galaxy S4 has bootloader lock and look like there is no perfect unlock solution yet...
so how about the Note3? Will it come with LOCKED BOOTLOADER on ATT & VZW again?
or its just UNLOCKED?
hope if someone could verify this

The latest update on the canadian s4 didnt lock the bootloader so im really hoping the can cersion of the N3 is also unlocked. This could be a good option for at&t users as long as we can get the device sim unlocked sooner rather than later

If you are on Verizon or AT&T then a locked bootloader is GUARANTEED. They both have stated as much on all phones and they are not changing their position on it. All we can hope for is a method that allows us to unlock it and not have to use SS to get around it.

Knox security has NOTHING to do with the bootloader. The bootloader is lower level than Knox. The bootloader on the S4 remains publicly locked after the OTAs, but that doesn't mean it isn't privately unlocked or that it's not able to be cracked. It's just the the public bounty of $5000 is a fraction of what the exploit is worth on the black market.
"What black market?" you ask. It's not a big secret if it's in Forbes magazine.
So the next time your device's bootloader or root state is not where you'd like it to be, don't assume that the device's manufacturer or the carrier made things too difficult, throw your hands up, and curse the xda developers for not having a solution. Instead, go to the bounty thread and pledge something worth their while. Can you really blame them for not caring about a $10 pledge when it takes them many hours over several days to get the exploit? Meanwhile, the $10 donation would give the person two years+ worth of benefit. What would you do if you were them?

I work at a phone repair shop and bootloader of the S4 is not a problem. I flashed many S4's. Customers are scared to update their devices so we offer that as a service since were an official service point of samsung.
The new multi tool gives problems but good old odin 1.85 never fails.

I was told that write protection enabled is shown in download mode. I wasn't exactly sure if that is for the NAND or the bootloader however.
I haven't seen Samsung lock their nand down like HTC does however.

Wait, are you saying that you are able to downgrade from latest FW?? For example from XXUDMH8 down to XXUBMEA??
I've tried and it's simply impossible due to irreversible bootloader.. Odin will FAIL on aboot.mbn and if you exclud it, you won't have Sound nor WiFi nor Calls ...

Mate, new bootloader for GT-I9505 (S4 int) is NOT locked, it's irreversible and SECURED.. You CAN root your phone or flash Custom Recovery/ROM/Kernel etc but it will trigger KNOX WARRANTY VOID flag and set it to 0x1... What that mean?? No one knows (yet) ... Some says that your WARRANTY is VOID but I don't think so... It should be KNOX Software related ONLY but it's still unknown...
Note 3 will have the same type of Bootloader and KNOX SOFTWARE on-board.... It won't stop you from flashing Custom ROM's but we need to find out if our WARRANTY RIGHTS will be intact or void?? That's my question for now...

Don't know about downgrading, but my co worker here has an S4 too that i flashed to MIUI v5 (CM base) and no problems whatsoever, i don't think it will give problems if i just flash the newest stock availible if he wants back to official. and warranty void is not really an issue.

Flashing ROM's through Custom Recovery is a different story and Bootloader is NOT flashed.. You CAN'T downgrade it at all... (so far) Tested

Tomorrow at work i'm gonna check out our special samsung pc, its got special software on it linked directly to the samsung database. I's not working through odin but a different kind of program that also lets you flash multiple phones at once even if they differ. I'm gonna check out if its possible to flash an older bootloader with that and report back.

Well for starters it used to be by the community for the community, and I do understand the money factor behind it. But if that is what its about today we might as well close up the site and call it a day. But it isn't and if I could do it I would gladly do it just for the BRAGGING RIGHTS!

Which carrier and which country. If you have an AT&T or Verizon phone then you are in for some gold and riches. Otherwise you likely have one that is not locked by carrier request.

For a person that has an owl as their avatar, you're not really making a wise decision. Let's weigh this one out:
Stay at home, make my own hours doing something I really love as a livelihood, be able to afford sending my kids to college :good: :highfive:

Fight traffic going into work every day, work on their schedule and sometimes holidays, and pray I don't lose my job while my kid takes out tons of student loans. As an added bonus, I get to brag to people I don't know, who I will never meet, about hours of work I did for absolutely free. :crying:

I'm sure many very smart people will own a Note 3 and exploit it anyway so they can root their own device for their own benefit. It takes virtually no effort to reveal said exploit so hardly much work for strangers (since the root they did for themselves). Keep in mind that the folks who have been finding exploits for iOS for years have never asked for money (google Dev-Team blog).

Have you ever thought that they might have sold it before they went public so there was no reason to ask?

As far as US models, there is already a Clockwork mod recovery for the 900T (Tmobile) version. This still doesn't mean we can flash custom kernels but it does mean we can flash custom roms with stock kernels hopefully. It does trip the Knox counter which is fine by me. I don't want to use it anyway.

That's not the real issue though, the issue is, once triggered will Samsung refuse to do a warranty repair on your device, if you have to send it back for any reason?

So like i promised, i have checked out the special computer with the samsung smartflash tool, the + on this is that you can download the stock roms in multiple files (PDA/MODEM/CSC etc.) but flashing seperate files must be done by odin, the smart tool installs all of em at once. so were till no further on the bootloader backward flashing. I can check if i can put all bootloaders online for development useage.

That doesn't matter to me that much since my Tmobile device is coming unlocked. The warranty is questionable anyway. I'm planning on getting a squaretrade warranty.

If I'm not mistaken a way to root came out for the note 3 without triggering Knox correct? Think it'll come out for the note 4 eventually? Probably will take a while since it hasn't even come out yet

Yes, it was called root de la vega... But, honestly... Don't hold your breath... Root de la vega was working on an earlier rom version of the Note 3... After that... Samsung patched the roms, and there has been nothing ever since...

Such a shame at what Samsung has done. They were so friendly up until the s4. We'll see I'll test drive the note make sure everything is in proper order then root it. Has samsung been known to honor warranty with the flag set if it's obvious manufacture defect?

It depends on the country from what i understand..
Imo if you show them that you know your rights, then you can "make" them honor their warranty...
And always always ask to speak with the manager...
Researching your rights as a consumer on the web (depending on your country) also helps a lot.
Im 90% certain that there's a EU directive that forbids sammy to pull these bull____ on us... Especially if we are asking them to fix a defect that is non-knox related...

In my other Samsung devices, rooting by Chainfire disabled screen mirroring. Can someone who has rooted check that, please?

it depends on the carrier, and how you talk to them about your issue; I have NEVER had a warranty issue for ANY phone, and that was with Sprint, ATT, and now T-Mobile. Can't speak to Verizon, as I hate them with a passion, and wouldn't take a free phone if they offerred one.
every time I returned a phone for a warranty issue, they were always unlocked, rooted, or s-off
here again, if you are nice, and polite, you shouldn't have issues

Actually, there were other methods after root de la vega. I have a method here for the Note 3 that uses towelroot and an older vulnerable kernel. You simply flash the older kernel in odin, use towelroot, then flash the new current kernel back and you're rooted.
Don't think of Knox being tripped as a loss of warranty- think of it as a loss of Knox! Knox is an app on your phone that will no longer work (ever!) if you trip Knox. Research Knox and make sure you have no need for it before you decide to get rid of that functionality. If you work at a company that lets you use your own phone to receive work e-mail etc and would like to keep apps and e-mail on a separate secure container "work side" of your phone (Knox) then don't trip Knox. If you don't care about Knox, trip it and forget it.
It's just not fair to people to leave this valuable piece of information out when telling them to root or in the how-to root threads. They can't revert after the case and some don't realize they need it until they present their phones to their IT staff at work and are told their phone's Knox integrity has been compromised -meaning it's no longer able to be used for that purpose (Knox warranty 0x1). Also, if you just want a secure container for some personal apps and pics etc, you can use that Knox container for that without actually using any work information.
Here's a quick video to demonstrate Knox 2.0s use.

Just in case anyone was wondering, towelroot v3 doesn't work. Not sure if earlier builds do as I don't have a copy of the older ones.

That's not a big surprise, since firmware was patched back in June or something and even Note 3 with latest firmware can't be rooted with towelroot, unless you downgrade kernel to older version first. Developer supposed to work for Google now, so don't expect updates either.

Chainfire trips knox and some people may want to keep knox cool for various reasons (like they may need knox for work for example), so it was worth a try, but a very long shot.
Also, did anybody actually tried chainfire method with T-mo ?
Chainfire may have exynos version? I'm not sure and also would that work on locked bootloader, like ATT version is probably getting? I mean we all expect T-mo version to be unlocked, but did anybody actually verified it is, since only insiders may have access to the phone ATM.

Also I just read in the root thread that chainfire works on Tmobile now. But as usual will trip Knox. To some it may not be a big deal but I like to resell my phone and not having Knox tripped will give it a better resell value.

In what way does it give it a better resell value? just curious not trying to be a d*ck. most people root their device anyways and the ones who dont probably wont notice it.

Towel Root won't work on any firmware released since June 3, if I remember correctly. Google hired the guy to find and patch the types of exploits he discovered and used in Towel Root.

Just based off selling price and how long it takes to sell on swappa, Craigslist, or eBay. And some will ask if it's rooted.

That's great. Mines rooted. What about resale value if Knox has been tripped?
I would sell on eBay but I hate the 10% they take from you. So I've never sold my phones there. I like selling on swappa or Craigslist.

oh the phones i have i bought new and i have never sold on any of those sites so i wouldnt know.

I think most ppl who aren't that familiar with root but have heard of it somewhat gets scared of units that are rooted. So they tend to stay away from buying them. And some care to have Knox for work. So your buyer base are much slimmer IMO than with an unrooted and Knox untripped devices.

Rooted my t-mobile note 4 with chainfire.

It's not that the phone is rooted, but you lose Knox functionality. For those that want it or need it, your phone loses value. Look up Knox 2.0 if you're unfamiliar with what it is.

Actually it does work.. I rooted my note 3 about 2 months ago and it did just fine..

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and i use towelroot to root my phone and it says this phone currently not supported

I towelrooted my S5 (though I had to 'jump through hoops' to do it)
My wife is getting the Note 4 tomorrow which I want to root and debloat for her.
I'm kinda keen not to blow the warranty on the day of purchase......
Is there a way of rooting without tripping knox? I've had a quick look at the sticky's and not seen anything......
Edit......With my S5, which was running a KK firmware (later than June 2014) I had to install towelroot, odin flash a pre June kernel, run towelroot, odin flash the original (post June) Kernel. .....will this method work on the Note 4? (Assuming the device still has out of the box KK)
Edit 2....nvm....just figured it out for myself.....looking at the device specs.....It comes with 4.4.4 which I guess means that 4.4.2 is not available for it. Which in turn means pre June firmware kernels don't exist, so there's nothing available that towelroot will work with.......

Just use CF AUTO ROOT on your PC. TMOBILE does not care from my experience.

New software version L720VPSGPL1

HI,
While in the process of resetting my phone, I checked for update and was informed of a new download. After installing it, the software version is now L720VPSGPL1. I googled this but nothing came up. Anyone else getting this update? I'm in the U.S. if that makes any difference.

I received it too last week and posted in the rdf forum. I too haven't been able to find any info about it with. Sprint hasn't posted a change log either.

Update is available, but the update failed because apparently something changed my build.prop. Anyone know where to find unmodified files from the original version?
Is this version rootable? If updating a rooted phone, does it unroot?

It will fail and possibly brick your phone if you try to update with a modified system (root, custom recovery, etc). Download the OK3 tar from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. Then you can update to PL1. From what I've seen it's only a security update.

Yes. Same root method as previous versions.

I've been searching around a bit, anyone know off top of head what the newest (available) modem is to download standalone?

Managed to dump an unmodified build.prop from stock ROM. Did a hex compare to mine, only difference is 2 hex bytes appended, 0A 0A. I guess some app that needed root modified my build.prop and when I uninstalled it, it changed it back but not cleanly. Anyway, copied clean build.prop to /system, then let the phone update and it succeeded. Figured it wouldn't hurt anything as I could re-flash with Odin if it bricked. Lucked out and phone update succeeded. Now on PL1 and didn't even lose root.

My wife is traveling to Russia in about 2 weeks. Wanted to UNLOCK the phone so she can buy a local SIM card and use her phone while visiting. Called Sprint and they said they unlocked phone, but not sure how to tell what (if anything) changed.
Is there a method to SIM unlock (and/or carrier unlock) with the PL1 baseband software?

There is a program called GTUpdate2_v3.1.8.apk that can unlock PL1 on a rooted phone. I think it's not a free software, but someone posted a link to it on the forums once.
I think without root, the program should at least tell you if the phone is unlocked.

It might be hard to find as the developer has asked all links to it be taken down.

Got root using cf auto root and confirmed it with root checker and busy box. Also installed twrp through the twrp app and no brick yet. Don't know which rom I can install yet. It's been a while since I've rooted and romed a phone. Kinda forgot how that works, well not the flashing the rom part but if this Pl1 firmware will cause problems with a rom I flash lol . Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Can anyone tell me where I can find current instructions to ROOT my Sprint Galaxy S4? It currently has the updated software (L720VPSGPL1). What I've found seems to be outdated.
I would also like to ROM using the Wicked. Sounds like it's clean and fast.

Odin TWRP .tar file for L720 from https://twrp.me then flash ROM or SuperSU zip from Chainfire's website (ROM is already rooted) in TWRP recovery.

I did try your rom 1st and I got bootlooped. Have been running resection 6.0 rom and haven't had any issues yet. I will try yours again. Not sure if I saw 2 versions of it or not, but if I did which one should I try. I like switching things up from time to time, but I used to like having at least 2 properly functioning roms saved to my phone incase. TIA

v11.0 is just a small update, so you have to flash the full ROM first which is V10.9. There is also the Bare Bones version which is just super debloated.

I'm confused on the versioning. Alphabetically, VPS comes before VPU, so I was thinking that "VPSGPL1" was older. Obviously versioning rules come fast & loose, but I'm curious what the VPS indicates that is different from VPU.
So then is this the correct order for different modems?

Hello, i was rooted for the past month and decided to go back to stock,
after flashing stock that i downloaded from SamFrim to my Region(Israel) i can't use the Samsung apps, they say im rooted.
i did restore my apps and settings from my samsung cloud, could this be the issue?

may be because it tripped the knox counter. But i believe that only stop you from using samsung pay. Maybe try re-flash the stock. or use different source? samsung-update?

do i need to wipe the internal storage? i didn't do that before.
also i flashed the updated stock firmware, not the one that came with the phone.
could this picture help to identify the real stock frimware?

If you performed a factory reset, and flashed stock firmware from SamFirm, you will no longer be rooted.
However, your Knox status is tripped to 0x1 (instead of 0x0) permanently. This cannot be changed, you will no longer be able to use Knox, or any application protected by Knox such as Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, Secure Folder.. etc.
Your warranty is also void, since a Knox status of 0x1 voids the warranty and is checked at every repair center.
You are not able to reset the knox status, ever. But, some methods exist to fool apps to think that it wasn't tripped to use Samsung Health etc using custom roms / Magisk etc.

As I said, you can use Magisk Hide to trick some apps, but the Knox status will always remain tripped.
Aka if you unroot and remove magisk, you will (again) not be able to use those apps.
And there is no guarantee that Samsung won't patch the apps to break Magisk Hide.
Knox status is a hardware fuse that gets permanently tripped.

It's true. And it is also heavily frowned upon by the community as it serves no purpose. Most apps can be replaced by other 3rd party apps, but specificaly samsung pay is ofcourse made by samsung and can not be replaced. Best thing you can do is keep using a non-stock rom that hides your knox (most do) so you can continue to use your apps that check for the knox-status.
Don't stare yourself blind on the loss of warranty. Samsung does not make consumer laws and they have to follow your local laws in this, no matter what your knox status is and what they want you to believe.
In general, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just remember for your next phone that Samsung is not the first choice for power users who like to root and take full ownership of their devices.

In the US software modifications will not cause denial of warranties UNLESS the software modifications can be proven in court to have caused the hardware failure.
Knox is the dumbest move Samsung has done in recent memory. It was originally designed for integrity for businesses who wanted to use an Android phone with extra security. I really wonder how successful this was vs the headache it's caused for other users.

I have an S7 Edge and never did root in it, but when installing the Nougat ZTO rom of Brazil it triggered the Knox Ox1, I took my device in the technical assistance and they refused by the hands in him, never I did root, I still have 2 months of guarantee So I made a complaint on a site here in Brazil and Samsung will exchange my cell phone card courtesy.
Your cell phone happened the same thing that happened to mine, look for a consumer protection organization and use your rights to have the repair.

Knox is the greatest thing Samsung made.
Businesses need solutions like Knox to maintain integrity and manage employee phones.
In addition, for the consumers, it enables advanced access to the firewall and such without root, for apps like AdHell and DisconnectPro to exist and block ads without root.
Like it or not, a rooted device is a compromised device. There is no telling if a device that was ever rooted and tampered with is safe anymore, for businesses this is not a joke.
You have to remember that people who root their smartphones are an incredibly small minority.

Hi, I bought an s8 with stock firmware flashed onto it and the knox is tripped. Little bit sickened because I didn't know this at the time of buying it and of course have only recently discovered the importance of Knox in relation to certain apps and services that Samsung provides. My question is, is it possible to update the firmware to the lastest version OTA or will it just keep saying I have the latest version installed? lastly is my phone technically rooted even though it has stock firmware? Now that knox is tripped anyway,should I just go ahead and use a custom rom?

But to flash a custom rom you have to have root privileges.
[EDIT] JUST noticed ZTO is the stock rom. Nevermind my post

I've reflashed older Galaxy S models and it reset the Knox counter.

So my warranty is void after going root on stock?
Is there any way to recover that?

The only way would be getting lucky, I guess.
You would have to flash the oldest available firmware via Odin and hope that works. I had success doing this with Galaxy S4 Minis but Knox was merely at the bootloader level back then, and was not fully developed as a security suite.

There is no way (or getting lucky) to bypass Knox when rooting since the S7.
Knox is hardware fuse, good luck 'resetting it'.
Except you're incorrect. Knox enabled phones are used in companies all over the world including the united states government. That's the point of certifying it by the NSA in the first place.
All data in knox secured partitions (containers) like Secure Folder (and all of enterprise knox enabled devices) is wiped if the device is rooted. There is absolutely ZERO way to bypass Knox tripping when rooting and tampering with the device.
If anything, this forum is proof that no one has been able to bypass Knox's detection in any meaningful way.
