[Q] Contact Sync reverts changes done on phone - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I receive SMS from unknown number and long click on that number to make new or update contact, it sometimes doesn't stick.
The symptom is like this, that the new contact was created or the number added to an existing contact, but once sync kicks in, it reverts to the previous state (and the number is once again shown as number only, all stored contact details are erased from contact database).
A similar thing happens sometimes with Notes in a contact (only if added from the phone), which I use to add useful information to that person. It doesn't matter, if I'm on 4G or Wifi, it's not reproducable. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
If I add number or notes in Google Contacts desktop app, it always sticks and gets synced back to the phone.
Has anybody encountered that problem and maybe even found a solution? Happened to me on 4.2.2 rooted rarely and now on KK 4.4.2 unrooted it seems more often.

Nobody has this problem? I did already cache/dalvik reset and full factory reset. I'm rooted. Still this problem occurs occasionally and it sucks big time! :-/

Curious contacts issue

Hi, First post after lurking for weeks.
I recently flashed to duttys 2.6, all went well except sprite didn't port my contacts across, so I got them via pc sync. This resulted in quite a lot of deleting unwanted contacts, but otherwise no problem.
But, Now my phone has the contacts ok, i can find them and make calls fine, but on some contacts, they don't show up when they call me, showing up as just the number, it lists them in the call history as unknown as well?
Any ideas why, it is only some contacts, other show up normally.
Cheers, Stu
If you have more than one entry of the incoming phone number in your contact list (duplicates) then they will not show up when a call comes in. The system does not default to any one.
Hope this helps.
Makes sense, I did have to delete lots of numbers and duplicate contacts. Only thing is I have only one of each contact now, suppose I'll just save them as they pop up, eventually I'll get then all.
Ta.

Phone shows phone number instead of names

When I receive a call or a text message from someone it displays their phone number instead of their name that is in my phonebook.
How do I fix this as I have tried google and the user manual and can't seem to find it.
Thanks in advance.
I've been talking to HTC tech support about this issue and they got me to try a few things. They now say that I will have to send it back to them for repair as they reckon it is faulty. Hopefully they won't send it back to me reflashed to the UK Orange ROM....
The other day I synched my tattoo with my Outlook contacts and calendar. It screwed it right up. Deleted over 500 contacts and moved loads of events in my calendar.
I have to wait for the IT dept to restore my outlook from the backup tape from the exchange server.
Since I told HTC about this they have stopped replying. Maybe next week they will take it in for repair......
Has anyone else had this problem. If I have the phone with SIM only contacts then the name shows. If I sync my Outlook contacts then none of my outlook or SIM contacts display the name. The ROM that I am using is 1.67.405.6
The phone is just back from repair and no fault found and they reinstalled the Orange ROM on it. I have put it back to 1.67.405.6 ROM
I love this phone apart from this problem (which I must get fixed or it's back to using the Kaiser).
My camera doesn't auto focus either to scan barcodes
Am I the only person in the world that owns a Tattoo that this happens to ????
No, to be honest my tattoo camera doesn't auto focus either when scanning barcodes...when using the normal camera it does really well...
Since I don't really need this feature it didn't quite bother me...
All my incoming phone calls and text messages just show the callers id number but it doesn't translate them into the phonebook names. Very annoying.
I doubt that this is a fault on the tattoo. Should be some settings somewhere. Remember on windows mobile 6.x you had to set the minimum number of digits in the phone number if your country used less than the default settings for it to show phonebook names? Might be something like that. Try to dig in this direction.
Think I have looked at every setting on this phone and still can't seem to get it working. Maybe it's a fault in the ROM or summat
Does the phone display SIM contacts AND phone contacts? if yes i would set it to phone only and copy all contacts to from sim to phone - maybe it can't handle doubled entries...Oo
I got it listing phone contacts only, changed my frequent ones to +44 numbers, still no difference, still showing phone numbers for all calls and texts.
Is my phone the only one that does this ??
If it doesn't get sorted soon i'll have to get rid of it as this is a bloody nuisance....
Yes, I'm afraid that your phone is the only one, just as my phone was the only one to delete sms messages automatically...I called HTC support and they told me I had to hard reset the phone (although I did this 2 times before). Nevertheless I tried the third time and now the problem's gone curiously...
You can backup all your data on your SD card before you hard reset it (if you're willing to do this again), so no data loss on this side
It's just a thought...
I think hard reset is triggered when pressing Menu and Back buttons while the phone is turned off and then shortly pressing the power button.
Sorry for not being of more help
Regards
TheSSJ
Right, I decided to bite the bullet again and did a hard reset, scrubbed everything.
1. SIM contacts only, phoned the mobile and the name and number came up the way it should i.e. normal
2. Synched my outlook contacts with the phone
3. Called the mobile from numbers in my Outlook, just the number shows, no name
4. Called the mobile from numbers that worked in step 1, these now show as just number only, no name
5. From this I presume that there is something wrong/corrupt in the Outlook data that the phone doesn't like and screws the names part up. I presume I will need to go through all my Outlook contacts to see if anything jumps out as being the problem.
Any ideas ??
FIXED IT.
Each text or call I received if I clicked on the callers number and listed the contact details it gave me part of one of my contacts with text in the number section (but the same info for every number). I then went through all my Outlook contacts 1 by 1 and found the one that had the same info. Deleted this contact on my Outlook and my phone and boom, hey presto, instantly all my number/names work perfectly now.
HTC sync had corrupted my Outlook earlier and I lost over 500 contacts, garbled others and moved stuff in my calendar.
Thank fook it's all working perfectly now.
I love this phone.

Can no longer send texts to ONE number!

Here's a weird one. I just found out one of my contacts hasn't been getting my texts for the last 2 weeks. I still receive his but can't send even though I do get a sent verification.
I can send to everyone else w/ no prob & he receives texts from others with no problem too.
I D/L'ed & used handcent for a while & then uninstalled it... Could that be it? WTH happened?!?!
Thanks for the help.
(Rooted JI6 never flashed)

might be a weird question, but what phone does you friend have?
me and my friend had the same problem..i wasnt receiving his text, but he was receiving mine.
There are a few bugs in the messaging app. In your case, it sounds like your friend's phone number / name has become associated with a different phone number (within the messaging cache). So, even though your display will show your friend's name, that's not where the messages will be sent.
Try to delete all of your threads and then reboot the phone. If that doesn't work, try clearing the data for the messaging app and then reboot your phone. That should do it. If that doesn't work, you can take the most drastic step, which is to do a factory reset, but then you'll need to do a restore of your apps and other data that would get wiped out.
Secondarily, there's a slightly different bug that could be happening (one that is much more rare than the first) - which is that your friend's phone number is the same, except for the area code, as someone else in your contact list. The messaging app only looks at the last 7 digits to determine a match for the phone number, so 415-123-1234 will match 310-123-1234. This one is much more rare, but that's another possibility.
BTW, these problems are internal to a specific Android class, so it doesn't matter whether you use Handcent or the stock messaging app.
Hope this helps.

[FIX] People not receiving your texts? Read this

When you download the Facebook for Android app, it asks you to sync contacts. DON'T DO IT. Whenever someone has a phone number in their Facebook profile, regardless of if there is an existing contact that it will link to or not, the number will have a +1 in front of it. For instance, a number that should read 123-456-7890 would read +1123-456-7890. Facebook adds this for unknown reasons. When you send a text to the borked number, the text goes through, even on verizon.com, it says that the text was sent by you and that the other person received it on their profile. However, the person does not receive it on their phone. Also, if you call someone with a borked number, the phone will not ring.
In conclusion: Don't sync Facebook contacts, and your SMS should send fine and calling should work fine. Alternatively, you can use any messaging app but stock, such as Go SMS Pro and the message will go through fine, even with the +1 format.
Hope this helped someone.

Nice Find man i havent noticed this but ill be weary of this from now on
How does this explain people receiving some messages and not others? If it was the number they wouldn't receive any texts at all, not just 30% of them. I noticed this a while ago and I couldn't call people with the +1, but they received texts just fine.

Only people who have their numbers listed in their Facebook profile are affected.
This is what worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, then I'm sorry.
I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying maybe there's two seperate issues. Without my Facebook contacts synced some messages are going through and some aren't. Maybe its just me, but I've seen posts with people saying the same. Thank you for your solution nonetheless.

You're welcome. I'm not saying by any means that this will solve everyone's issues. Just my experienced and it worked for me. Best of luck to you on sorting whatever is up with your SMS out. What ROM are you using?
+1 is the country code for the USA, no idea why it's adding it though. I know that wavesecure requires you add +1 to the contacts on your contact list since the texts come from somewhere in asia IIRC (may not be true now since McAfee owns them).
I know it is, but since it's a cell phone, you don't use the 1 or +1, which messes it up.
Thank you for putting this up. I was confused and frustrated as to why lots of my contacts didn't receive or was able to send any texts or calls to me. But now its all good
I'm going to test this theory. Hope this works. Thanks

Try using Contacts Clean-up from Android Market. It works great and resolved my issue on the fly. Dev just made it CDMA compatible
I think this only matters on sense roms. I know I need to be on aosp for dialing businesses through voice search to work because it also adds a +1 (at least it used to).
Thanks for the post. It was driving me crazy.

problems with marshmallow and caller ID

Hi, I have Moto X Style and since I've got the update for Marshmallow yesterday the Caller ID is not working and it's not showing me the contact that is calling me. After the call I can see them on the "Recents" page but when they call its not showing me their name and photo only the number.
After awhile I've noticed that the problems is only with numbers that are saved in my contacts with the country prefix code (+972-...) and when they call me the phone shows me the number without the prefix(without the +972), so I tryed to change one of the numbers to to be without my country prefix and it recognized the number but I cant change all of my contacts so the phone will recognize them.
Does anyone else is having the same problem or knows how to fix it?
Thanks.

I saw this post before I posted my post and at first when I upgraded to Marshmallow the phone didnt recognize the contacts at all but after I signed out and reconnected to my google account as recommended there, it fixed only half of the problem. Now it's recognizing numbers that are saved in the "local form" with my country code BUT it's still just not recognizing contacts that are saved with my country code prefix in their number.

Yeah, looks like I may have the same issue.... Hoping I don't have to do a factory reset to fix this.
I have the same problem, the caller ID just doesn't seem to work, but in the SMS it kinda does

Hi,
I found several solutions for the contacts recognition problem, check out the url below (I opened the thread).
What eventually solve the problem for me was using the Twitch app mentioned in the thread.
Let me know if it helped.

FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKS and IS SIMPLE !!!! The credit goes to Sasha Medv :
"What solved the problem: I removed all google accounts (in Google settings), and then added them back. After 15 minutes during which I was sure my contacts were lost forever, everything returned to normal, and I even can see the contacts in past calls in the call log. Yay"
no need to wipe partitions, import export your entire google contacts to vcf and other weird stuff - simply do what this guy say ! BAAM !
