I think you should consider getting a new battery soon, I once teared down a battery to see what was inside and it's basically a lot of compressed layers of what ever the inside of a battery is made and that's basically where it keeps the electricity from when you charge it so I'm pretty sure that the little hole you made will slowly reduce battery until it can no longer charge plus it will also expose your phone to those toxic chemicals and I'm sure that is not good for y]the phone and as for the smell it turns out that depending on the amount of usage you have given it(charging and killing the battery) makes it produce a different smell because out of the many that I have teared there was one from an ipod touch of about 8 years ago(a few years have passed since this happened so more about 12-15years in total) smelled really good compared to a battery which was practically brand new
so in little words yes you should replace it asap

IMMEDIATELY change the battery and DO NOT use the phone. Li Polymer batteries vent when punctured, worst case scenario is a blowtorch fire that can cause 3rd degree burn on your skin, to be more precise a hole in you, or you can put your room on fire. Please, change the battery immediately!

Hey everyone!
Somehow, on my HTC Touch HD, quite a big spot showed up. It displays colors and everything, the touch screen works fine on the position of the spot, but the spot is just brighter than the rest of the screen (you can hardly notice it, if the background is dark, but it's quite noticable, if the background is white / bright, or if you're looking at it from an angle.) Now, I have no idea what this is, but to me, it looks like some sort of water damage at most.. Yet, I have no idea how my HD could have come in contact with enough water to create a spot like that. Now, I'd like to know, where the water indicators on the Touch HD are, and what color should they be, if the device hasn't come in contact with water, and what if it has come in contact with water. I only know for the one on the battery, and that one is white with red stripes all over it (in a pattern). I'd just like to figure out, if my device really has come into contact with water (steam perhaps). Oh, and btw, the spot doesn't change if I apply pressure to it, nor is it visible if the device is turned off.. I'm letting my phone sit in a dry spot, without the battery in it for now.. I'll see if it gets better in a few days.
Thanks in advance! Perhaps, I'll post a picture of the spot, if I'll be in the mood for charging my digital camera..
Just under the battery in the bottom corner is a strip.
If it is pink/red it has been in contact with water (thats the colour mine is )
I think there are a couple of internal one around.
Check the manual posted around here somewhere. It has the factory instructions on how to pull it apart/put it together and where all the strips go.
Well..The stripe under the battery, to be precise, under the battery pins is still white.. But the one on the battery is white, with red patterned stripes over it..But I heard the one on the battery should be like that.. Not sure though.. And I don't think I'll mess with opening the device up..If the spot doesn't go away in a few days, I'll contact the shop, and ask what the hell's wrong with my new (5 days old) device ..
Kinda afraid I'll have to pay muchos euros for the repair though Does anyone have any idea, how much does it cost to fix the screen?
Just tried turning on my device, and, I think it's getting a bit better to be honest...The spot had even brighter areas inside itself before, but now, the whole spot has the same brightness.
Complain now while you're still inside a week! But hopefully it will go within next few days (i'm just hoping, I got no clue what it is!)
Good luck
I had something similar with other devices, an air pocket between the digitizer (it looks like water but isnt) and the LCD, you may have applied too much pressure to the screen at some time. The spot can be pushed out, using you finger push the spot towards the outside of the screen, eventually it will return again if you apply too much pressure. This normally happens from the device being in pants pocket and when you sit or bend the pressure is increased. Also hold your LCD to the ear, if you hear a high pitch eeeeeee squeal then you your LCD is faulty. I would send it back for replacement.
Hello again!
After not using my device for 15 hours, the spot has almost vanished. It's still sliiiightly visible from an angle, but otherwise, it has really improved over the night. So, I really think it's a drop or two of water that's inside, which is slowly vaporizing now. Kinda reliefed! I'll report tomorow again, to tell you if the spot is still there or not! But I'm pretty sure that it's going to go away completly by itself.
Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but, I think I'll let the device cure this one by itself .

Man is this the stupidest problem ever...
The good news: I finally got my DHD yesterday...
The bad news: The battery cover is as bad as I've been hearing. For some reason I couldn't put it back on. So I pushed the Battery as far in as I could in order to put the cover on. The phone works great, but now the battery is stuck inside and won't slide out by itself and I don't know how to take it out
Please Help...
Put your fingers flat on the table, same width as the battery door.
Rest the DHD on your fingers (so that the battery door is facing the table.
Raise the DHD an inch or two and bring it down on your fingers (not so hard that it hurts).
Keep doing this, the battery will work its way free and drop onto the table.
I'll add a pic in a sec...
Thanks James, this definitely sounds very doable; I'm giving it a try now!
The battery has moved about half an inch now!! This is working *jumping up and down with joy*
I got the battery out!! Why does everyone else's battery just seem to slide out by itself? I thought it was because I pushed it too far in, but even when the battery is half way out, I still have to pull it out with some effort...
Maybe my phone just has a lot of "friction"? When I watch those YouTube videos, everyone seems to glide their fingers smoothly across the screen, but when I do it, it feels very fricative...do you guys put on hand lotion or something...
Do not press the screen too much, only a slightest touch is needed. Also if you have moist hands, it makes swiping the screen harder.

Probably because its a new phone. You have to play with it a little bit until the oil from your skin lubes up the screen. Then its all slidey slides.
I had a similar problem with my first DHD... part of the the plastic wrapper around the battery had folded back on itself along the forward edge of the battery. That caused the battery to get wedged inside. A little trimming of the plastic wrapper with a craft knife fixed it... YMMV

No you can't - the WiFi/BT antenna is in that cover .
would've given you some extra grip tho
Now seriously, if when u look at ur battery there's no visible flaws that u can safely and/or easily remove and if your screen keeps giving you the finger in my opinion you should return it for a replacement. There's been enough faulty hardware cases, the folks at HTC know the drill by now. If that's not an option, sell it on ebay ( or your local online market ) and grab a new one;]

I got an aftermarket battery stuck in my DHD and had basically given up on getting it out until I found this thread. Nice work! Worked a treat after tapping it for what seemed like a couple of minutes.
Slow and steady wins the race!
Cheers guys
This is an unusual post and request, I know, but if my idea could become a reality, it would make the shift even better.
I find it difficult to give up using the evo since I bought the extended battery and back cover at a corporate sprint store. I can get a full day out of one charge with maybe 40% battery left at bedtime. Supposedly the evo and shift use the same batteries and it would be awesome to use the bigger battery on the shift. The only problem is the battery cover. I lack the knowledge and skills to do it but I was trying to think of how it might be done. I would guess a mold would have to be done with the stock cover and modify it to extend enough for the thicker battery. I wonder if a 3d printer could create this? Unless it was mass produced, the cost would probably be very high.
I'm pretty sure that the terminals of the batteries are on different sides between the evo and the shift...although I could be wrong
I will check again when I get home but I thought I read they were the same. I think I may have looked at them and they might have been the same. I forget so I am not 100% sure.
Yeah the battery just has to flipped upside down to work

flip the battery over and it works just fine. Terminals match up, it's all in what you call "up" on the battery.
As far as extended cover, I tried to fabricate my own, didn't work out so well. Hahaha
I just checked by flipping the extended battery over and putting it into the shift. It will not work because the phone contacts are not touching the battery terminals. The thickness of the battery is the problem. Standard batteries will work via the flipping method but extended will not. Too bad!
I do not know what the two center terminals are used for but the positive and negative are in the right places. Depending on what the middle two do, it could work or not or f something up. I do not know and are not going to try.
Having just come off the phone to my Network, I'm worried about my choice of Nexus 4. My first one I have had less than a week and this morning the back glass went ping whilst it was sitting on the sofa doing nothing, the entire back just shattered all on its own.
The Network operator advised there are issues with leaving the phone on charge for long periods and the battery overheating causing the glass to shatter. I was offered an alternate phone, but I actually like the Nexus so am giving it another go. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I'm used to charging my phone overnight whilst in bed as I don't feel this is excessive over charging????
This.. this is making me concerned for my phone.. I've never left it charging over night intentionally as it wears down battery health but I have forgotten with my other phones..
It's the heat, do you live in a child country, or keep the ac low? Since the glass is thick, the temperature gradient between the two sides causes expansion like in a bi metallic strip, causing it to bend, and eventually crack as strain goes beyond the critical point of elasticity. 11th grade physics

Long story short, don't subject the phone to a temperature gradient of more than 7-10 degrees Celsius, the glass will break, gorilla or no gorilla

No such thing as all modern phones/batteries have circuitry built in to prevent overcharging. The phone will tell the AC adapter to stop supplying power and as such it does. You can keep devices plugged in for days without any current reaching the battery. If your phone is still charging past 100% then that's a faulty AC adapter which should be replaced.
It's -20C outside now while inside being 20C so that's a 40 degree difference and I have no issues with my phone just cracking out of no where. Glass surely will crack under drastic temp changes but definitely not that easy, especially tempered glass on (like such on cars).

I can only go by what my Network told me, I was placed on hold whilst they contacted the Nexus Team whoever they are. When he came back he stated that I had left my phone charging for too long which would have likely caused the glass to fail.
Even I was shocked when I saw the shattered glass and thought they're going to think I dropped it. But then dropping the phone with the special glass shouldn't cause it to shatter, maybe a crack or two, but as per the picture this is an all over shatter.
Maybe I just had a one off duff phone, time will tell as I've ordered a replacement as I actually love the phone itself. Had a HTC for 2 years with not a scratch as I look after my things.

Maybe they thought it was funny and were winding me up then. I guess they just replace phones for no reason?
I'm pretty sure if there were no known faults they wouldn't just offer a free exchange or an alternate phone if they thought I'd smashed the thing myself.
Mine broke by being in my pocket just the other day. It's on it's way to LG right now for possible Warranty work.

Its not the glass affected by temperature changes, rather the metal components and frame that are. This "can" cause glass to crack.
Did your phone have any kind of skin or protector on the back?
I have heard stories of cracking from temp changes.
I have a front and back protector and have not had any trouble with mine going from zero degrees outside to 70 inside or vice versa.

Are you making this story up mate? I don`t believe a word of it and it sounds like troll language to me Damage like that seems to be caused by a fall (flat on it`s back) rather than a overheated battery imo. It would take a sudden 40-50 degrees Celsius increase and most probably the glas would melt rather than break. Breakage is caused by temperature differences between the inner and outer side off the glas. And you don`t have it fixed allthough they offered it too you?
Hi
It looks like a typical stress fracture of the glass.
I'm not convinced normal changes in temperature is the cause as otherwise we'd not be using glass for windows!
Charging overnight is perfectly safe and doesn't harm the battery. Lithium batteries explode if constantly charged so the charging circuitry is carefully designed to monitor the charge and stop it when the battery is full. There are also safe guards in place, which likely the red flashing LED issue is an indicator of a fail-safe being triggered.
Sometimes lithium batteries go wrong. The lithium batteries in the Nexus are not in a rigid metal can like most but a different technology that allows them to be in a soft foil packet, much like you might find food in. This means a fault can cause the battery to expand, this would deform the back, stressing the glass and breaking it. Typically with such a fault there will be heat, so 1st line support on hearing of customers finding a hot phone with a smashed back may be coming to the wrong conclusion that heat is the cause.
The only people that know the truth are LG who will find these phones winging their way back to them, and unless this is a huge problem where a recall is required, we will probably never know or be told of a confirmed cause of these "Unexplained Spontaneous Back Shattering" events or USBS, and there probably isn't one single cause anyway.
Regards
Phil

Why would I make it up? I asked the question if anyone else has had similar issues as when my replacement arrives on Tuesday, if it happens again, I would like to know if it is infact a common issue.
Had I have dropped the phone I would be asking if anyone knows how I could get it fixed. Why would anyone waste time posting a load of lies?
As it happens 3 Network have advised they are aware of over charging causing the back glass to break, although I don't see any warnings or advice over how long you should keep a phone on charge.
I fail to see how what I have stated has given you reason to think I am trolling. I am happy with the phone itself and feel it's worth another go as it's fast and to be honest is one of the best handsets I have had.

Now, this I can agree with. The reason I have given the phone a second chance is that I believe I had a duff phone. I was offered a different phone, but stuck with the Nexus as I actually love it so far.
When I contacted 3, they placed me on hold for a few minutes and came back to advise they had spoken to the Nexus Team, wether that be at 3 or Google, I have no idea. The conversation was almost accusing me of over charging, but being an average phone user I do not know what over charging is. I just plug the phone in and leave it as I always have with previous phones.
The phone itself was not in any pocket, but just sitting on the sofa when it shattered and I too find it hard to believe it just shattered by itself, but in all honesty it did! I have no reason to come on here and say otherwise.
Let's hope the replacement will give me many hours of use, I've ordered a 2 cases to ensure if I do drop it, I get some protection.

I have charged overnight every night since November with no ill effects. I've used various nexus and non-nexus chargers.
I've also never used a screen protector and have had no scratches. I have a 3 quid S tpu for the back and sides.

I've never not charged a phone all night. If I had to wake up at 1 or 2 in the morning to unplug this phone I would sell it today, that is ridiculous. I can't believe that LG or any company would think that this would be acceptable in 2013. Maybe back in the stone age but not today. With that being said, my phone is still in perfect condition with a protector on the front and back. The only thing that drives me crazy is the creakiness of the phone. I hope this crap gets straightened out.

I have ordered a replacement battery but I am wondering if there is something else that should be considered.
The LCD screen was replaced about a month ago and it was a battle to get the battery out. The battery was damaged trying to slice through the glue when the outer covering of the battery got accidentally sliced open.
After reassembly everything worked fine except for the battery would get to about 40%, then shut down after a notification that the battery was at 0%.
That percentage when it shuts down is getting progressively higher. In fact it can happen any time now.
I've done a clean install of the latest Pure Nexus, but there was no difference.
While it is on the charger, it never happens.
So do the XDA gurus think a new battery only is required, or might there be something else?
Thank you in advance.
It might have to do with a certain chip thats gone missing, I don't think it has to do with a battery, i will look into it later. Anyway don't change the battery yet.

The fact you know you sliced into the battery makes it pretty obvious. Damaged battery=battery issues. Replace the battery. Also if the battery structure has been compromised at all you risk being one of those people missing half a thigh because your Li-Ion battery turned into a jet pack in your pocket.
