moving on from my N1

Hey all
My nexus 1 got stolen
I'm contemplating my next smartphone to replace it, and the Samsung Galaxy S has caught my attention.
Justwondering what I'll miss/love moving to the SGS?
I'm attracted by the Super AMOLED screen, a real beauty.
But I'm not sure whether I'll hate the TouchWiz interface over the stock Android UI...but then against it's a software issue - I'm sure a vanilla ROM will be released sooner or later!
Also wondering about the build quality. The N1 just felt solid in my hand - would the SGS feel flimsy from it's plastic build?
And FroYo was great

Played with my friend nexus.
Galaxy S have great screen and is faster. But moving to galaxy, you will miss the stability of your nexus. Galaxy still have a lot of clink that needed to be patched.
And to be fair, something to look forward to when proper 2.2 comes out. Check out the pics below.

For the various differences:
SCREEN
Big improvement, especially in sunlight, but everyone knows that already. I like the 4" size too as, for me at least, it's the perfect balance between screen real estate and usability (larger than 4" and you need to start shifting your hand to reach stuff).
The other thing to consider is that the Galaxy S has a far better capacitive touch sensor, so none of the multitouch issues of the HTC phones and it feels much more responsive to me. It's also made from Gorilla glass, so much stronger than regular glass and coming from the HTC Hero feels a lot less frictiony for me. My fingers seem to be able to glide across it much better than my old Hero and iPod Touch 2nd Gen.
SPEED / POWER
The Hummingbird CPU in the Galaxy S is known to be a fair share more powerful than the Snapdragon in the Nexus One / Desire, as can be seen by comparing the Nexus One <2.2 and the Galaxy S <2.2 bars in the graphs shown by the previous poster. The difference is, the Nexus One has Froyo now which provides a HUGE performance boost, hence the massive bar in the top of the graph. Froyo has been confirmed for a Korean launch in August, and most likely then international in September. Can you wait until then is the major question, but from a usability standpoint the Galaxy S is very snappy and the latest beta firmwares have mostly fixed the lag issues.
The GPU is FAR more powerful, so if gaming is your thing you'll find there isn't a single Android game that is anything less than flawlessly smooth, even Gameloft's games such as NOVA.
BUILD QUALITY
Here's where we need some distinction. There's a big difference between build quality and materials.
The materials are where the Galaxy S isn't quite as nice as HTC's phones. The front is great, but the rear is glossy plastic which is quite slippery and incredibly easy to smudge. Simply put, it doesn't 'feel' as premium as the Nexus One or Desire's soft-touch plastic and aluminium. Easily fixed with a case though.
That being said, the build quality is still top notch, with no creaking or flex in the phone. The gorilla glass screen is strong, and the plastics are suitably hard. Nothing feels loose or weak.
So basically, the phone is strong and well made, they just should have used some nicer-feeling materials to give it the premium feel and look its hardware deserves. It would also be nice if they hadn't aped the iPhone 3GS look, although I must admit I'm getting used to it and holding it next to a 3GS in an Apple store today it actually made the 3GS look cheap and nasty (especially the screen and chunkiness).
SOFTWARE (TOUCH-WIZ 3.0)
I was cringing when I saw the screenshots and photos of what Samsung had done. It looked cartoony and quite frankly amateurish. After using it, I actually don't mind it anymore since one of the key things is having a solid black background. Being a Super AMOLED display, it's actually pretty much impossible to see where the edge of the screen is with black next to it, giving the impression the text is actually floating on the black glass.
It does use some wild colours like the iPhone-esque apps menu, but in the end I wouldn't say it's any better or worse than stock Android. Just a bit different.
Functionality-wise however, it does have some good improvements. Being able to jump to messaging or email straight from the lock screen if you've gotten something new while it was locked is great, as is having music controls in the notifications pull-down list (very very handy!). The best thing has to be having the wifi / bluetooth / gps / silent mode buttons in the notification list at all times. Google should add this themselves!
They've got a few widgets (mostly meh) but a very good task manager in the latest firmware, and some of their apps are surprisingly good. The email one works well, and their music player is an improvement over the stock Android one and even includes a custom equaliser.
If you don't like Samsung's stuff, you can just use Launcher Pro to get back to stock easy, no probs at all.
OTHER GOOD STUFF
It's been shown the Galaxy S actually has the best sound quality for any Android phone via headphones, on par with the iPhones in absolute minimal distortion or interference. No background buzz and full dynamic range is fantastic! Sammy did a good job with the media.
Speaking of which, it supports tons of media formats such as FLAC for audiophiles, and for video it can do MP4 as per usual, but also FLV, MKV, DIVX, XVID and WMV! It's the best Android media phone by far.
Internal memory is also either 8gb or 16gb (depending on country), including 2gb for installing apps as well as obviously having MicroSD. Again, great for media.
The phone itself is very light thanks to the use of plastics without feeling flimsy, and is extremely thin for its size. Holding an iPhone 3GS today made the iPhone feel positively bloated!
A good sign Sammy has changed its ways from poor Android support is the nearly constant flow of new beta firmwares recently, some separated by a matter of hours! These have each been fixing bugs and improving performance as well as adding some new features such as the task manager.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea and most likely September everywhere else, but of course no word on Gingerbread.
The battery life is reportedly better than the Nexus One and Desire, although I haven't owned either of them and can't comment.
ISSUES / PROBLEMS
The most widely known problem with the Galaxy S is the GPS issue, with it being very shaky getting a connection. Recent beta firmwares have improved this somewhat, but it's still so much of an issue that if you use GPS a lot you should probably avoid the Galaxy S. I never use GPS anyway, so not a problem for me though.
Also the firmware that ships on the Galaxy S is quite buggy with random stalling / lagging. The recent leaked beta firmwares have mostly fixed this as well as some fixes found by xda members, but simply put the Galaxy S firmwares are nowehre near the Nexus One or Desire's in terms of polish and maturity yet, so be aware.
It's also unlikely we'll see many radical custom firmwares with the Samsung drivers being encrypted, so no massive ports or huge variety of roms like the Nexus One / Desire. Mostly just themes and optimisations.
The camera is also lacking a flash, which is a big omission for many people but like the GPS issue I rarely use my phone for photos anywhere. It's like the Galaxy S's drawbacks were specifically designed to not apply to me, haha.
All in all, I love the Galaxy S. I had an HTC Hero and was a big Sense fan, but I've found the Galaxy S offers everything I want.
Just be aware the firmware is still reasonably buggy and performance isn't at the level of a Froyo-running Nexus yet, but should definitely overtake it once Froyo is released for the Galaxy S's superior CPU and far superiour GPU. If you're happy flashing your phone with the new firmwares that keep being leaked and provide bug fixes while we wait for an official firmware release, the Galaxy S should keep you happy.

Questions from Potential Buyer

I'm thinking of upgrading my daughter's phone to Android. I have a Verizon Droid X and my wife has a Samsung Vibrant.
I was looking at the G2X and the Galaxy S 4G, but really would rather not spend $200 for a new phone.
T-Mobile has the MyTouch4G for free at the moment.
So, how does it compare to the Droid X and Vibrant? Looks like it's at least on par with both of those spec wise. She'll like the front facing camera.
Is it pretty easy to root?
I'm only looking to do stock ROMs. What's the current stock ROM version? Froyo? What's the word on Gingerbread or beyond making it onto this phone?
How's the build quality in comparison to the G2x and Galaxy S 4G?
How's the battery life?
How much internal memory for programs is there?
Anything else I should know in comparison with those 2 phones?
With a 2 year contract, I'd just want to be sure I get something that will survive for 2 years.
I understand that, coming to this forum, I'll probably mostly hear from people happy with their device, but please do share any negatives as well.
Let me know anything else I should be considering here.

A little search and reading will answer most of these questions, but IMO there's nothing those 2 phones have that makes them worth spending the extra $200. The MT4G is at the top of the current available phones spec-wise, looks and feels good in the hand, and should be powerful enough to remain relevant for the next 1-2 years. If money is a consideration, I'd get the MT4G 100%. I wish I could've gotten mine for free!

That's pretty much what I thought. I mean, I don't really see getting tired of my Droid X anytime soon and this is pretty much on par, if not better, spec wise and my daughter isn't nearly as much of a power user as I am.
She had a broken ipod that I was going to replace for $200. I was adding a 3rd line shortly anyhow, so I figure might as well just pay $0 and $20/mo (loyalty data plan) and get the phone rather than deal with 2 devices. Makes a lot more sense.

I think you're making the right choice. If money wasn't a factor, the MT4G would still be a great choice, but considering the price points, it's a no brainer. And that's my reasoning too: I now just use my phone for media/music as well, haven't even used my ipod in like 2 months. Lol I don't even use my dedicated digital camera anymore, I just use my phone for everything. Lightweight FTW.

I have been an owner of every iphone (2,3g,3gs,4) and went to the mt4g, and I find it very nice in comparison to those. I know you didn't want those compared, but I can't compare if I've never owned a vibrant or a g2x
The battery life on the mt4g is really bad until you learn to manage it well. Mine lasts really long now, even longer than my dad's 2g iphone. GPS is the big drain. Even if programs say "use only when needed" it will use it much more than it should, that was the problem I had.
I did ask vibrant vs mt4g, and the general consensus was mt4g > vibrant. It will last 2 years assuming it's not abused and used as a sports toy or something.

I'm just curious, but what made you switch from the iphone? Also - having used both, does music through headphones sound better on the iphone, or about the same? Which overall experience do you prefer? Lol I'm just curious, as I'm a mac guy when it comes to computers, but have never owned an iphone.

I'm pretty much in agreement with previous posters. The specs are still top-notch for the moment and will hold up well for the next year or two. To answer some of your other questions . . .
Yes, it is pretty easy to root, but that's coming from someone who is technically-inclined. If you can work a terminal/console window and understand some basic commands, you should be able to follow the guides. Use the gfree method, it does more than the root.sh script does.
At the moment, MT4G runs Android 2.2.1 (Froyo). I expect there to be a Gingerbread update from HTC at some point, but I'm already running a Gingerbread ROM. Just a heads up, some knowledgeable people have suggested that the stock ROM doesn't play well with root.
Build quality is really nice in my opinion. It has some heft to it, feels pretty solid and not plastic-y like many Samsungs do.
Battery life is dependent on a number of factors as well as your usage pattern. The biggest battery savings for me came from installing a custom ROM without all the HTC Sense overhead and installing a custom kernel, which underclocks the CPU and uses lower voltage settings. Aside from that, it's a matter of being conscious and selective about what connections (GPS, bluetooth, WiFi, accounts sync) you leave open and what apps you let run in the background. Don't use Taskillers.

well mainly the fact that I had EDGE speed on every iphone, including the 4, just didn't feel right you know?
I do however prefer the iphone interface, just much smoother to me. I'm also not a person that is into customizing much. My mt4g pretty much looks stock, just removed some stuff like yahoo mail etc.
I do like androids market system better, not having to type a pw everytime. I always hated having to put a CC into my iphone app store just to download free apps.
If the iphone 4 had HSPA speed on t-mobile (which we may see!) then I would use that. I feel that music sounds better on the iphone when I'm walking to places, but maybe that's just bias since I've always owned an ipod or iphone for music.

you can download PlayerPro from the market and also the DSP pack for it; lets you change your sound preferences for headset, phone speaker, and bluetooth, like an equalizer. you can also run a different ROM (CM7 has the DSP installed already, DSP Manager i think) and it integrates it with the included music player. the mt4g is awesome! only other phone I would consider is the HTC Sensation, eagerly waiting for it. but the mt4g will last for 2+ years, no worries on that one. rooting the phone is fairly easy, took me a total of 15-20 minutes to flash everything and I was good to go(using rooted stock ROM, never had any problems). battery life on sense is 'fair'...but once you uninstall the bloatware and mess with the settings, I can go 14+ hrs on a full charge. I tried out CM7 and wow...32+ hrs on a full charge, so it depends on the ROM also. the build quality is very good, not plasticy feeling like some other phones, descent weight to it, and has a nice design.
con(s): only issue I have is that the buttons tend to squeak from time to time, but it doesnt really bother me. there is also a good display and bad display version, luckily I got the good display on my first try. the bad version doesnt look much different, but the colors look washed out and a bit blurry at an angle. other than that, the mt4g is a beast

I'm another past owner of the Iphone, 2g, 3g, 3gs and 4G.
Mytouch blows those iphones away, especially when you have rooted the the phone and dropped RoyalGinger 1.6 rom on there.

the last few days have changed for me
i finally did the gfree method of rooting, installed CM7 7.0.2 and man it is nice
feels better than the iphone 4 did

Changed it to just a basic red theme "Red Remix for CM7" and loving it

In my opinion its a great choice. But if its for your daughter then that might change things a bit. I love myTouch 4G, and so does everyone in this forum, but we're all geeks to our own respect and we all like this phone for mainly the same reasons. But if its for your daughter to replace her mp3 player then you might want to take a look at the Galaxy S 4G, as long as she doesn't care about not having aa flash on her camera. IMO it's a better media phone than the myTouch 4G. Of course it has a bigger screen with the SAMOLED screen and the music app has a nice equalizer and music sounds awesome. Also the myTouch 4G's sspeaker pales in comparison to the SGS2's. And the SGS2 plays divx videos out of the box which is nice if she likes to watch videos on her phone.
Of course I would still hands down pick the myTouch since it would be free for you and its the best all around phone, but if she doesn't care about updates and a camera flash then I would consider the Galaxy S 2.

Awesome! Glad you're coming to like the phone more. Yeah, rooting and flashing a new rom can do WONDERS for your phone! It literally turns it into a whole new experience. I'm on cm7 too, and it rocks, the DSP manager has been a HUGE improvement in listening to music, I can now use the stock player instead of mixzing/poweramp. I was using those just for the eq, but I prefer the simplicity of the stock music app...and re: the statement about stock rom not working well with root, I think it's true. When I first rooted, I stayed on stock for a week or two, and it wasn't terrible, but something felt off, a little sluggish and bad battery life. Flashing to cyanogen seemed to fix everything.

I'm thinking of swapping.
It's for my daughter. I think the size/weight might be a factor. The Samsung is really a lot lighter. I was surprised how heavy the mytouch4g was.

Lol well considering it's for your daughter, that might not be a bad choice. As someone else said, the Galaxy might be better for that particular user, it's lighter and has better stock media capabilities. Overall, the MT4G is the superior phone, but the Galaxy should be fine for her, especially if you can now get it for free.
A few points about Samsung though: they're generally considered to have inferior builds, break easily, have been reported to have GPS problems, and while the AMOLED screen looks great, it's a huge battery drainer, and from what I hear Samsungs are harder to root and don't offer as many rom/customization options.
All that said, I'm sure it's still a solid phone and your daughter would love it!

I have the origipnal vibrant, so I'm aware. Samsung also terrible wth updates.

Touch Wiz vs Sense
Touchwiz was one of the first if not the first to implement hardware acceleration and is one of the smoothest most resource friendly launchers. Back with gingerbread, touchwiz browser was pure butter....one of the smoothest i've ever used and definitely still one of the smoothest i've used. It's also battery efficient etc....
Sense on the otherhand is a resource hog, not very battery friendly, and mostly just looks good. Touchwiz is ugly, but there's a huge dev community for the galaxy phones so getting rid of it and flashing AOSP or anything was super simple.
As for user friendly, touchwiz is probably one of the simplest to use. Also looks kinda like iOS buttons which might help a bit but w/e. In terms of out of the box performance, samsung software > HTC software

What surprises me in these benchmarks is how close the GS2 performs to the One X. Disappointing on One X' part if you ask me.
As we showed in our SGS3 performance preview, the handset is, as Samsung described it, capable of posting "superlative" benchmark numbers with its 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quad SoC. It goes without saying that even with TouchWiz running atop Android 4.0.4, the SGS3 is butter smooth, everywhere. - Anandtech

The One X has been in available around the world for a month now, and none of those are mass reported problems. Since the SIII is not released yet or even reviewed, I can't see how you think SIII will be problem free.
I like the screen on the One X over my Note (same amoled as SIII), the colour are more accurate and its much brighter in direct sunlight. As for CPU/GPU, both are more than powerful enough to make no difference for day to day use.
Overall, apart from removable battery and micro sd card, SIII and One X are too very close to call. I think both phone will do well over the next few months. The SIII is more suited to the power users, but One X have the WOW factor the SIII lacks, which will do will with general public who don't really care about removable battery or expendable storage.

Threads like this remind me a little bit about Top Gear, where they say a car can't be cool if you have to explain WHY it's cool.
With the one x, you can just show it to someone, and they will be "wow, that's cool". With the SGS3, they will think it looks ugly/bland but may be won over after you spend 5 mins telling/showing them why it's cool.
And yes, phones are all about being cool

It's not a POS that's for sure. But there are some real issues and I don't think people should ignore them. Lets keep things a little more pro brother lol.

The rattling sound that people complain about is when they press a button and it vibrates. They think the sound of the vibration is a rattle

The real question is can *you* handle the truth? The truth that CPU benchmarks are a pile of useless s.it that have nothing to do with real life usage experience? The truth that tegra optimized apps will always run better on the one x and there are no whatever-samsung-called-their-cpu optimized apps and won't be for quite some time? The truth that HOX has more beautiful screen than the pentile SAMOLED? The truth that difference in performance *might* be felt after a year and a half when both these phones will be old news? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the downright ugliness of the sg3? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the cheapness of the shiny plastic? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the inferior screen? Thread will be closed i am sure in a while..These threads are not necessary. No need to make yourself feel good bro just because you are getting a new toy. Enjoy your new toy and no need to bash others just because they made another choice..Both phones are great and both have their own good points. Even though most are just gimmicks from the iphone (yes S-Voice just a copy from Siri) and really even though i love the features of the phone it still does not cry out innovating from some parts of it..anyways if i did not had my one x i would be going for the s3 cause i still believe it is a good phone but the issues you are stating about the one x not everyone has it..so best go and do your research again. Plus each time i press the water lockscreen it will probably make me wanna go and have a leak.. and on that note

First & foremost I'm an Android Fan & not brand specific and will go with who ever I believe will give me the best end user experience.
I like the One X, I also think it has a very nice display, I like sense as a UI & the unit feels nice in the hand, play with my sisters one most days even to the point where I even ordered one, which I then cancelled due to the impending SIII launch.
Now the SIII is here I have ordered one, mainly due to the larger replaceable battery, full size sim (I have other network contracts) and Micro SD Support. These three things alone kill the HOX stone dead for me and I would guess quite a number of others who have multiple handsets.
I think seriously looks a very subjective thing, but when fashion fades only style remains. In the most part these things normally end up in some sort of protective casing which renders the looks aspect moot in most cases.
In 18months time, when the you have stopped looking at it aesthetically and just use it as a day to day communication,entertainment and productivity tool, what is really going to matter?
To me it will be.
Ease of use, battery life, reliability, compatibility & decent brightness in daylight.
I'm I really going to care about the differences in terms of Screen Technology's on a day to day basis, I doubt it, its a phone at the end of the day as long as the display is good that's all the really matters personally. Not for the least part there will be something better by then the anyway.
They are both really good High end devices which will hopefully push Android even further in front of a certain fruit company.

I noticed Wolfson on the your spec list. This is great! Sound quality is a major factor for me, and keeps me on my Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate). With the return of Wolfson, I may be able to upgrade this summer when it comes to AT&T.

Here is my opinion. I think they both will be winner. I'm not saying that to make everybody else happy, its cause its the truth. Here are facts:
The one x is the best looking device without a shadow of a doubt. It looks sexy, the screen is amazing, it is really a great looking device. But unfortunately it has horrible battery life, screen issues, lag and stutter and sense while it looks beautiful is still a heavy skin. ( about the issues if you don't believe me go check the one x forum). Still it has great potential and WILL get lots of dev support so in a couple of months its gonna be a beast!
Now the Galaxy S3, honestly I like the design a lot. It isn't as beautiful as the one x but still , people are saying that it looks awesome in person. Then you got so many pros, exynos 4 quad on board , expandable storage, removable battery all in a device that is thinner than the one x. Anadtech and many others have reported the phone to be buttery smooth as expected. On top of that the phone should be easy to root ( no S-off bull crap required) all the new features Samsung introduced look great. Dev support is gonna be HUGE just like the one x will but with a boot loader easy to unlock. My personal choice is the S3 cause after I was blown away by the S2 , Samsung has won me over as a loyal customer. They both will b great especially when development takes off but I will give the edge to the s3 cause it is a performer!!!

We dont need another SGS3vsHTC whatever thread.

I expected as much.
I believe that the key point here is that all of those differences you've listed are marginal in most areas, but having a high quality feeling and good looking phone is very important to me.
Unless those differences were huge (let's face it, they aren't), I'm struggling to look past the One X for myself.
The amount of times I'll pick up my phone and enjoy the feel of it absolutely blow away the zero times I'll care about the camera being 1% better or the phone loading a web page 000.1 second quicker.
Why can't Samsung use some intelligent designers? They really are clueless at this stuff. They've managed to make TouchWiz look even worse as well, despite adding some nice features.

The battery life test here is what is the most interesting. AMOLED screens use up more power than LCDs at bright colours, so it's expectable to see the S3 have only a slight margin over the HOX. The video test is the most interesting one; that's just pure obliteration beyond the 300mAh advantage. Expect the device to have on average a much better screen-on time than even that that if you optimize for the AMOLED screen, Samsung's default skin isn't quite nice in that regard. So much for Nvidia's +1 core.

This thing is proven again and again this year's best goes for samsung !! No more pointless discussion on which is the best.

To me the home screen flinging didn't really respond to my touch, as in no matter how fast my finger moves, once I lift it it glides at its own pace. It's not very satisfying. Or maybe it was just my friend's phone that's like that...
About the defects (if that's what you mean) all phones will have some when they launch. I wait a couple months for them to iron things out.

It is extreme subjective. I have hold my buying decision when One X launched and waited for the announcement of SGS3. I still prefer SGS3 to HOX for switchable battery and microsd. They are with the same surface material. Sense UI may be better and I get used to it for years. Just wait for the arrival in my place to buy SGS3.

This is obviously a hot topic in the One X forum also. Here's what I posted there. Keep in mind I'm deciding between the two after a week or so with the SGS3. I also came from a i9100 and have a 3G UK G-Tab 10.1 so I'm no one's fanboi.

Some other things that struck me as relevant...

So what does it come down to? Personal preference.
1) Is a removable battery and SD card slot important? Buy the SGS3.
2) Is design, construction, and feel in the hand important? Buy the One X.
3) Is low light picture and video important? Buy the One X.
4) Are more detailed pictures in bright light important? Buy the SGS3.
5) Do you like the vivid (I'm being kind) colors of AMOLED? Buy the SGS3.
6) Do you like a brighter, non-PenTile display, with more accurate color and better detailing? Buy the One X.
7) Want a better browsing experience and more audio and video codec support? Buy the SGS3.
8) Are you an avid gamer that'll be pushing the CPU and GPU regularly? Buy the SGS3.
9) Do you like TouchWiz? Buy the SGS3.
10) Do you like Sense? Buy the One X.
11) Do you listen to lossless audio over $300+ headphones or a home system that cost several thousand dollars? Pick the SGS3.
There's other differences that may matter to people but those are the main ones. I knew the SGS3 would benchmark better than the One X when I bought it. The reality is, as it stands today, the power of Teg3, S4, and Exynos-Quad are wasted because the OS and apps aren't able to tap their power. Other than bragging rights you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart performance wise; they'll "feel" the same.
My views on the main features...
1) I like the LCD2 display on the One X. After using AMOLED for a year the realistic colors, the lighter look because black backgrounds aren't used to save battery, and increased display brightness are all nice for a change.
2) The One X camera h/w is better than the SGS3's. It shows in low light settings. I'm hoping s/w tuning in future updates makes it a better all-around performer. I wouldn't ditch the One X over the camera as they don't strike me as that dramatically different from each other.
3) Audiophiles probably never considered the One X once it was announced that the SGS3 has a Wolfson DAC. An audiophile would cut off their arm before listening to compressed formats like MP3's or on anything less than high grade equipment. That makes 95% of us “non-audiophiles.” And a real audiophile would question the use of something like a smartphone as an audio output device anyway.
4) Did anyone who bought the One X not know in advance it had fixed storage and a non-replaceable battery? I'd like those features; I think anyone would. But I really like the design of the One X and if it had to look like the SGS3 in order to have them I'd pass.
5) Other than the graphics issues which are big, the One X's launch has been pretty typical from a QC perspective. I'll bet anyone here the SGS3 launch looks the same (sans graphics issues) and that display consistency will be one of the biggest *****es on their forum. The SGS2 and GN launches were far from great.
So, the short answer to OP's question, nothing in that review has changed my opinion of the One X. Look at it this way, the SGS2 crushed the Sensation. In less than a year HTC launched a phone that made GSMArena consider splitting the win. That alone is pretty impressive. Of course, YMMV and I clearly don’t expect everyone to agree with some of my comments.

I stopped posting on the one x section, after they started calling me a troll. I don't know what exactly a troll is but I posted on 3 threads with with the words "galaxy" on the title. Im not going there to start a new thread or whatever and never have. Now that the dust has settled, lets be the bigger man.

In my own opinion these guys don't realize just how many of us have mp3 collections we want to pack on our phones. Not having the ability to get my mp3s on board makes the htc piece a non starter all by itself unless it can offset this by having an apk that makes naked supermodels spill out its guts on command.

have you seen the video comparisons?htc's looked pale as compared to sgs3's.
and the most important thing that everyone waited and wanted to know was the battery life.

This seems to be nearly flawless victory or smackdown (for the SIII, except screen and body imo), the photo sensor even trump the iPhone 4S. Glad to see the the audio quality is decent, that is a big factor for me.
I still don't understand Samsung decision to not use 5x5 icon rows in the home screen.

My brief first impressions

Got my device yesterday, played with it most of the day. Overall very impressed!
Build quality feels good, got around 7hrs screen on time out of the first charge with variety of browsing, music, app installing etc etc Screen is very good with punchy contrast (much better than my Nexus 4) Loud speaker is plenty loud enough (again, louder than Nexus 4 IMO), vibration is strong so no missed notifications when silent. Only made one call on it so far, quality seemed fine, and no complaints on the other end about not being able to hear me clearly. Performance is great as expected, no slow downs when browsing and such.
There are plenty of reviews on the camera over in the Z1 section, so without repeating what's already been said: avoid the "superior auto" mode and spend a few seconds configuring the manual mode for the shot you want to take, and you get some great results. The superior mode seems to suffer particularly badly in poor light as it drives the ISO up sky high and produces horrible grainy photos.
Only negative comment I have is the screen protection, or lack-thereof. The screen its self is "scratch resistant" but there is a cheapy plastic film on top which I grazed within minutes, I'm told this can't be replaced or removed without losing the warranty. Sony do include a screen protector of sort that you can apply on top of this in the box, unfortunately its one of the god-awful 10 for £2 type plastic things. I'd suggest buyers budget an extra £20 for a good quality film or tempered glass protector to go on top. This is for me the biggest disappointment with this phone; having had my Nexus 4 "naked" most of its life, and suffering no damage, I'm very frustrated that my new £450 phone has to be covered with a cheapy plastic sheet to protect the screen - not good.

LED notification is nice and bright, I've set up "light flow lite" to customize the colours / blink rate etc and all is well. I've tried to take a quick photo here, but it doesn't really do it justice. (excuse the terrible screen protector fitting, I threw it on in a bit of a huff. Waiting on a better one to arrive)

XDA home page vs Nexus 4. (Note nexus 4 is using SlimRom with custom colour profiles etc. Have its set quite cold ad my preference)

It has to. It's much more narrow and the screen is definitely smaller.

Thank you for your insightful input! One thing so important to me is screen and software responsiveness and fluidity...and you're the perfect person to tell me how fluid it feels compared to the nexus 4 and I will be eagerly waiting your response!

Hi, can you also please put the z1 compact on the top of your nexus? It makes me easier to recognize the size difference

Answers to a few questions:
Charge time from almost flat seemed to be in the region of 2.5 hours, which is pretty good by my reckoning.
It feels a lot smaller than it looks. The reduction in width makes the most difference, and after 2 days using the Z1c the Nexus 4 feels chunky to me now. I don't have my Nexus to hand for size comparison photo now I'm afraid, but laying the Xperia over the top of the Nexus 4 allows you to see 2-3mm on all 4 sides. Next to no difference in weight, through the Sony feels more dense/solid to me - Gives a premium feel.
The phone operation is very fluid and smooth, I went through numerous custom roms and kernels on the Nexus 4 to get the kind of smoothness that the xperia offers right out of the box. Launching the camera app is very quick: Maybe 2 seconds from sleep (via the shortcut button), and near instant from the menu shortcut. Shot-to-shot time is very impressive too - This is one thing where the N4 was always poor in my opinion.
I haven't missed the screen size at all, others may I guess, but personally I prefer being able to operate the whole screen comfortably with one hand!

Headphone sound quality
Hi Guys,
Some more feedback on my experiences with the phone.
I'm noticing improved WiFi reception compared to my Nexus 4, My desk in the office is a bit of a black spot normally. My laptop frequently disconnects from the wireless, the Nexus hardly ever managed to connect, the Z1c seems to obtain a connection here and I'm streaming music over it without dropouts :victory:
On a related note, The sound quality through the headphones is very good too. I'm using Logitech Ultimate ears 200, previously had fauxsound on the Nexus 4 for improved volume, and whilst this did allow my N4 to go louder than the Z1c does, the sound quality is definitely better here, stereo separation in particular seems to be better.

Mine arrived in the mail this morning, and I'm impressed so far
Still setting it up mind, but it's the perfect size for my hands (pretty much the same size as an iPhone 5 with a case on)
In comparison with my current Android phone (HTC One X), although in physical size it's only a little smaller to look at, it feels much smaller in the hand, and more usable (no over-stretching of the thumb, reaching for the on button, etc...)
And as for the responsiveness, it's genuinely on par with the iPhone 5 too!
I'm glad I took the gamble to pre-order! :good:
(Just need to set-up the SmartWatch that came with it next...)

Any impression about the ringer volume? I've got a Z, and I had to use a mod (replaced the Fusion3 file) in order not to lose notifications and calls.

if you care about audio quality, you'll already own decent headphones/iems and have absolutely zero use for any included iems which would stay wrapped up and un-used and be a waste of sony's dosh. much rather sony spent the money they will save by not bundling cheapo iems on a phones build quality etc

Mine from O2 came with earphones And surprisingly they are actually quite good but the rubber buds slide out the my ears.

I don't own a Z1 compact (yet) but I had two Nexus 5 devices - both sent back to get a refund because Nexus 5 has some serious issues with its microphone. The audio recording is terrible during video footage and a lot of users complain about crappy quality during phonecalls (on the receiving end).

First impressions too
To share my first impressions: I received mine yesterday, and I spent the afternoon playing setting up the phone .
The size and weight are about the same as my previous phone (a HTC sensation).it fits well in my hand and well in my pocket too.
The built seem of quality, the flap are easy enough to manoeuver (and allow to plug cable easily), and seems built to last. Overall it gives an impression of quality. I don’t have any issue with the plastic protection screen.
On the software side, everything run fast, and smooth. I have been really impressed by the 4G: it seems merely as fast as at home. All the connections are running well (no issue with gsm, wifi, Bluetooth, nfc). Phone calls are clear, and the micro works greatly according to the “test” I made.
The only drawbacks I found are linked with my experience on my previous phones, and are softwares linked (it might be possible to solve them, but I have search yet to do so): I found the keys of the keyboard to be a bit too small; The intelligent dialer is not as good as I wish (start to look in the phone number before looking at name); I am missing the HTC clock which was also indicating the weather.
