Moto Replacing my broken screen for free! - Moto X General

So a few days ago my phone fell off of my bed and landed screen down on the wood floor and shattered the screen. I simply went to motorola.com , clicked on get help->returns and repairs. and selected request a repair. I filled out the form and selected damaged display, and put a brief explanation of what happened. With in an hour i received an email saying that since it was my first issue they would replace the phone for free! Within another hour i received another email with a code to use on moto maker. I created a new phone and used the code. They even said reply to this email with your order number, and we will make sure to put rush shipping on it! They also sent me an email with a fedex label to send in the broken one. Crazy awesome customer service. Im not sure if this has been posted before but, I had to share it!

Wow that's very nice from Motorola

Motorola provides this "one time replacement" as a service to anyone who has purchased a Moto X through MotoMaker.

yes but a little trickier, but there is a process to get it replaced.

Happened to me as well, Moto has earned my business!

Did not seem that this is possible at least for the developer edition. The support teams are different for the MotoMaker and most of the Motorola Mobility staff for the DE were difficult to work with, recommending several times to "contact AT&T" as if they would help replace my off contract DE.

How long did you have the phone? Does this only apply 30 days after purchase?

I've had it almost 6 months.

My wife is getting her Moto X replaced like this as well. She dropped hers, it landed on the back with a case on (the official clear case from Moto) and it broke the LED panel and digitizer, though the screen wasn't actually broke. I was very impressed with Moto's service here and the ease the process has been. We ordered her a new one today and will be sending the broken one back tomorrow. Good guy Moto!

Yeah my wife broke her's as well. Same deal. Sadly I already ordered a DevEd to replace it. I like to keep a spare not 2 spares.

That's sorta what this whole thread is about. Apparently Motorola offers 1 free replacement for cracked screens. Who knew ? Not me before plunking down the cash on a DevEd.

Anyone try this with one ordered from AT&T

Yeah I know, I meant did you try to return the deved that you bought, and instead try to get a replacement for your broken one? is it too late? or maybe you could get your broken one replaced and sell one of them..

I believe it's only for moto x's from moto maker. Just chatted with Moto agent and would have to pay for a repair on at&t

Oh sorry. No, I didn't try to return the DevED. I'll sell it outright or keep it as my spare and sell my S4.

But couldn't you not send the broken phone? Anyway, this is very cool considering that not.too many companies do that ( I know HTC does that for the M8 )

Do you think if my current non-DE moto x broke that they would let me get a dev edition if I paid the difference between the two?

What if you got the moto x from motomaker but got it with a two year plan from at&t? Will motorola still replace the phone if the screen breaks?

Has anyone that was rooted had their N1 replaced?

It doesn't seem like HTC asks you over the phone. Do they just get the phone and then charge you if it is an unlocked bootloader?
My phone isn't rooted, but I was asked if I'd rooted it in one of my two warranty swaps.
I'm in the process of doing that now. My rooted phone has been with HTC for a few days and I have not heard anything yet. I'll update when or if I do.
many people on these forumns have without issue.
they charged my $55 for a replacement because of my unlocked b/l.. good for the pople who got away with it though

What was the process that was executed for this? Did they call you? Say something? Did you try and get out of it?
nope. i got my inquiry a couple days after i sent it in and it said that my cost was $55. i called them and they said it was "something i did". but the only thing i would have done was unlock the bootloader. i hadnt dropped it or scratched... basically brand new. so.. much luck you. hopefully you dont get flamed for trying to rip HTC off, like me in the other thread i started haha

I'm not trying to rip them off. I will not hide it if I'm asked and I haven't been so far. What do you mean you got your "inquiry"?
I'm sending mine next week just for the dust under the screen problem. why are you guys sending yours?
Because of my atrocious battery. Although, they offered to send a free battery if I thought mine was bad.
Has anyone returned it for a full refund (or minus $55) with an unlocked boot loader? I wouldn't mind doing that and picking up the Milestone instead.

First (new) phone had a problem with the g sensor and an ill-fitting bottom plastic bit.
Second (first swap) phone had a blue tint to the screen, and a very noticeable blue tint in the bottom fourth or fifth of the screen. Also a dead pixel.
Third (second swap) phone has a much better screen, but still a bit of noticeable blue tint along the bottom edge. Also, the horizontal g sensor is off by quite a bit, and it has the same ill-fitting bottom plastic issue the first had, only much less annoying than the first.
I'm calling tomorrow to do a third swap, hoping this one won't have any issues. If it does, I'll keep whichever is better, and wait a few months before doing another swap. Maybe some of the later AT&T batches won't have the same kinds of problems.
Even with all that, this is the best phone I've ever had. I'm just being super picky after forking over $530. The swaps have been easy; I get a new one overnighted and then send the old one back in the same box with a fedex label htc provides. I have zero complaints about the service, I just wish I'd gotten a perfect phone in the beginning. =)

The Milestone also has the dust problem. I came from a Telus Milestone because it got a speck of dust and I was afraid more would get in. Now I have a speck of dust under my Nexus but it is really small and no more has gotten in.

Well, if battery is an issue couldn't just have replaced your battery? That would cause no concern over the phone itself, so maybe they haven't checked the bootloader yet...

Hmmm.. I'm having trouble with my N1 as well, but I'm reluctant to send it in in fear that they'll charge 55 dollars over the unlocked bootloader just to repair just the power button.

If your replacement phone comes without battery/sdcard/back cover... it's a REFURB

My original phone was broken (when I bought it). When they sent me a new one, it came in a cardboard box, no battery, no sdcard, no battery cover.
Called in to make sure it's new... "well to tell you the truth sir, it's reconditioned like-new.... no we can't replace it, because the phone that you sent to us was used, so we had to send you a used one.... I'm sorry sir, theres nothing we can do."
buyer beware...
thats usually how it works, especially with a phone in such high demand
except that Verizon policy states that if you're within your 30 period, you can replace your phone with a BRAND NEW one
I've decided that if customer support won't send me a new one, there's nothing stopping me from just going around them. Since I'm still within 30 days, I'm going to simply return my phone for a refund of my purchase price, and order a new one.

that would work but what will you do when you hit the 31st day and you have problems then you will have to take the refurb.

My point is that when you send your xbox 360 in for repair they either repair it or send you a refurb and i bet you plug it in and play it. This is the same with phones so why is it a big deal if it works?

I would agree after 30 days. But before it you should get a new replacement device not a like new device.
I'd just tell them that the phone they sent you was BROKEN so since you paid for a NEW phone you want a new phone.

TBH sometimes if you describe the loophole you described to the person you're talking to, they will help you out.
I've literally told customer service reps for various things I've owned that I can simply do that, and they usually oblige.
Very true; i started having issues with my droid and customer service informed me that i would have to put up money for the replacement device. After they received the failed device they would credit my account.

There are two type of replacements for the x only within 30 days. First would be a wfg which would come with charger etc. and would be back ordered. The second would be only the phone and for a doa which you had they are new searching the esn shows no other activation s. This one is only for the x atm.
I'm a vzw tech btw and have no reason to lie
I went round and round about this with them. You are getting new ones in the little white boxes without the battery (for now)
I'm not sure it's "refurb" providers send phones without the bact etc to help avoid people calling in pretending their phone broke and then selling one and keeping the other. I know you aren't doing that, but I'm sure that plays a part it why they do it like that.

yeah there are usually no refurbs around when a phone first comes out. so they set aside news ones to send out in the refurb cardboard box. saves them money of all the accessories w/ shipping, u keeping them, etc.\
i bet the phone is new.

LG G2 Replacement

Long story short, dropped the phone and shattered the screen. Digitizer dead so touch screen doesn't work!
Yesterday was the last day I could have put the insurance on it so I cant take it back to Best Buy or anything.
Called LG and they said I have to send it in but i don't wanna imagine how much hey will charge me.
Anybody know if they sell the digitizers separate to buy to replace the screen?
Any help will be appreciated

oh wow that's really cheap! the cheapest i can find the part on eBay was $140, I rather send it in! thanks guys!
i had a case on mine, but had it off when i dropped it a couple nights ago. same story--phone still works, but the cracks the dropped caused left the screen unresponsive to touch.
i also heard the same thing from LG, but my biggest issue was that i wanted to retrieve data that i had on the phone. they said that they always wipe the data when they do any repairs on it, so i purchased that screen from china and am giving it a go on wednesday.
wish me luck! :fingers-crossed:
So, lol, the same thing happened to me. I wanted to post a pdf of the tear down guide that might help you guys, as I couldn't find it anywhere online.
I was going to order the part online, but after hearing about it being cheaper to send to LG, I might just do that instead!

To be honest it is cheaper then insurance..... I bought the ProtectCell after I broke the first one. and it is $200 or something up front plus $150 every time you break it.... Aka I could fix my phone 3 times before the insurance is a better deal.

Can't post a link since I'm new but lg(dot)com/us/support/repair-service/schedule-repair should work for you.
I dropped mine last week and called their 1-800 number to create a Return Authorization, rather than using the web page. Ended up being $146 to repair mine, which is still cheaper than local shops and far less risky than me trying to figure out how to do it solo. They received it Thursday, gave me the quote late Friday, and I called in to make the payment then. Hopefully it's repaired Monday and on it's way back to me by mid-week.

Awesome. Thanks so much for the reply. I think I will give them a ring tomorrow. I had found the LG repair link prior to your reply and, oddly enough, the G2 isn't even listed in the list of selectable products, so figured I'd have to call anyhow.
I'm generally extremely careful with my devices, maybe even anal, so I generally don't buy insurance. However, this is the second phone, after my G-Nexus, which has ended up with a smashed screen due to a freak accident. Starting to rethink my take on insurance......
Thanks again!

Thanks. I noticed that after the fact. Had been looking for the G2 so overlooked the other options. Ended up using the live chat option which worked very well. Also checked back in with live chat a few times to see where the process was at once I sent it in.
Long story longer, I will have mine back in my greedy little hands tomorrow if Fed-Ex holds up their end of the bargain. Like another poster stated, the repair cost was $146, which includes return shipping, plus my cost to send it to Texas. Took about 2-1/2 weeks total from the day I shipped to getting it back tomorrow. I saw another poster-or-two mentioned that their repair was quoted at $105. Not sure why mine and others were up at $146 since mine seemed like a pretty basic crack and I figured thus, it would be at the lower end of the reported repair chargees.
Looking forward to getting it back. Had already sold my G-Nex so I've been scraping by with my resurrected Palm Pre for the past couple weeks

Motorola Cust Support is horrible

I never, ever get a resolution when I call them. I just lose 15-20 minutes of my life I can never get back....
My phone came in with blemishes on the white back cover. They wanted me to send it in and fix it. There was no way I was going to send in brand new just to have service done. They forced my hand and I threw it in their face with a smile. I just kept saying no to every scenario until I was compensated for their lack of professionalism. Then I told them how I wasn't offered a case and how it would cover up blemish. From there they offered me any case on their site. I choose the Commuter per their recommendation, and plus I hate the plastic screen protector on the Defender. And unlike some other folks, I have the order number and email confirmation for the Otterbox Commuter.
So just like your mom said, "Just say no (to drugs)." But in this case, to their refusal to bend. Make them bend over for you.

I used their live chat because one of my promo codes wasn't working. The rep wanted me to try and get another code and I was like "I can't just get another promo code after the registration is over". Then she told me the code wouldn't work because I had made a Moto X with a natural (bamboo) back. I figured this could be the case even though it wasn't listed as an exemption on the email I got with my code. I then check back to the thread here where I had signed up for the code and see a lot of people who had gotten a wood back with the code. They lied to me to get rid of me in a way. Now I'm considering calling them up and explaining this, but I don't know if this will do any good.
I actually had a decent experience with them. I couldn't get the bootloader unlock website to work for me and sprint allows the bootloader to be unlocked. So I had to call customer support to get it. I talked to a lady in the philippines, she was thrown off a little by the fact that I speak some tagalog but she escalated the call one level and a ticket was submitted to the developers with my IMEI number, just a few hours later I had the unlock code for the bootloader in my e-mail inbox. No complaints here.
Try posting on their forums. It did alot for me! I got the attention of Wendy who set up my RMA and gave me a code to make a new one for free.
I think their customer support is actually pretty great. I got a $20 code from them and actually chatted back asking if I could get a case instead of the code and they sent me a $50 code.

I think their customer support is superb! I received an air grip case which came out of the box scratched. I called about it and they said to keep the scratched one and they would send me another one. They sent me the air jacket case by mistake and I had to call them again to let them know. They said to keep that case and they are sending me the correct case. 2 free cases hassle free other than a couple of short phone calls.
My walnut back moto x had discoloration on the screen and they are sending me another one no questions asked. Their customer support alone has made me a Motorola fan for life.
I just had a great experience with customer service. My SIM card rattles in the tray. I sent an email explaining the problem and within 10 minutes had a response. Within one hour I had a tracking number.

Try posting on their forums. It did alot for me! I got the attention of Wendy who set up my RMA and gave me a code to make a new one for free.

Which forum please? I'm pushing a month now with their customer. I called two days ago to but get a RMA cause of the customer service and got the run a round for 45 minutes.

+1 on which forum. I got my brand new Dev Edition with multiple screen scratches. Customer service seems not to care when this phone should never have been shipped ... now it's like oh "I'm sorry about that" and I'm supposed to lose the $100 discount to boot. No way to treat a customer. Woodside probably saw where things were headed and jumped a leaking ship.

Sorry about the slow response. Just make a discussion thread and wait. It took about a day after I posted it for Wendy to come to my rescue.

She'll help you out well. Just give her time because it is the weekend. Then again, she kept in contact with me over last Saturday and Sunday.

The first time I did a return I did it through online chat and had no problems . the second time I did it over the phone and the service was just as good maybe even a little quicker.
I've returned three devices and had nothing but good service. Their chat is pretty responsive. And someone phoned me to walk me through a moto maker order that wasn't working.

I got my issue resolved after some serious head banging ... before I knew about Wendy. But right after my situation got fixed via Matt, I came across a guy having a similar replacement issue on a Dev Edition, got him in touch with Wendy ... on the SAME afternoon she fixed the issue for him that he'd got spun around for a week+. Wendy for the win!

Bootloop, LG and Farewell

Well, it's happened on Monday. Was using my phone and bloop....screen goes off and that's the last time it worked. Gradually got to the stage where it wouldnt even loop but my 5x is dead. RIP.
So, being out of warranty and all I sent an email to LG to see how much it would cost to repair. Reply came back with a series of questions but no "reply to" address. That's one way of hiding from the problem I suppose. For a company to try and avoid their responsibilities for a screamingly obvious hardware flaw is way out of order. At least Samsung had the guts to put their hands up.
Sharing this as part of the grieveing process in a way for the old Nexus devices. Had a 4, a 7 and then a 5x. The Pixels came out but when I saw their price tags and the setups it just reeked of apple (excuse the bad swearing language). Very sad really for someone who rarely went a whole week without the simple process of changing rom or setup or kernel but that was the beauty of the Nexus ethos.
Since Monday evening I have been the owner of a Moto G5 Plus. Only charged it three times since getting it. Ads are part blocked in stock, it's nippy and am moving on with my life post nexus. Trouble is it's still on 7.0 but not a big issue for me.
Anyway, thanks guys and gals for the good times. LEarnt a lot about android, poor customer service and build quality from LG and made some good friends (and enemies) on here.
Keep happy
My 5X also died from last Sunday.... I sent my phone to authorized service (Procordia in Greece). I'm waiting now when the phone will be fixed (changing motherboard).
So I know you already moved on to the G5 plus, but you should see about getting it repaired. Then you could always keep on hand as a .spare device. Mine bootlooped (a second time) well out of warranty but I filled out the RMA request on LG's website (didn't talk to anyone, just like I did the first time) and they fixed it a second time for free. I don't recall how long they did it for, but they extended the warranty
edit: should point out I'm in the US and it might not go as well in other countries
My nexus died on me yesterday, still have 3 days left in warranty. Filed 2 reports to LG to request a repair and have had no email or anything, its as if my request has vanished. This is utterly ridicolous as I need a phone and I'm currently without one and can't afford anything worth buying. Will have to resort to using my Nokia 1600. Shame on LG for being like this
You should try contacting LG via phone and that might work better. The 5X warranty has been extended to 18 months on a case by case basis since this is a hardware problem. If they won't fix it, all you did was spend time on the call, but if you are eligible to have it fixed, you'd have a spare phone.
These bootloops are getting more and more common as our phone ages. Mine froze and shut down randomly and bricked while using it a few months back. Thankfully I bought mine here in the UK from Carphone Warehouse where I sent it for repairs, got the motherboard replaced, and fixed in one week, for free with the 2-year warranty. It sucks that LG aren't willing to help you guys though.
Mine died on me earlier this year. Luckily I had some backup phones. Using my old 2013 Nexus 5 currently. I can get life from my phone here and then but it freezes and shuts down during the boot animation. I bought mine from someone off craigslist so I doubt I'd have any luck getting it fixed by Google or LG. Too bad parts are hard to come by or I would try and buy a new motherboard and replace it myself. I really do miss using the 5X though. Just got to hold off until the end of the year for the next Pixel.
My Nexus 5X also bootlooped itself to death yesterday. I purchased it January 2016 when my Nexus 5 decided to kill itself. Unfortunately I also bought a 5X for my girlfriend at the same time which I'm expecting to go anytime now. I'm currently using my Samsung Galaxy S II that I bought at launch and is still alive 6 years later. Sucks because the only new phone that looks good to me right now is the LG G6, but I don't trust LG anymore so I don't know what to replace it with. Galaxy S 8 is purdy but I don't want to deal with burn in (like on my GS2). Essential also looks nice but doesn't have a headphone jack so that's out. Might have to go Sony with it's gigantic bezels. :-\
Update: Getting a refurbished replacement from Google. Hopefully by the time this one dies there will be some more appealing replacement options.
My second 5X died few days ago. Good phone bad quality
Mine died today. Warranty expired last October but they are sending me a refurb replacement. I've had it since November 2015 and even Bought it off swappa so I feel fortunate in one way but a phone should last a lot longer than that.

Who did you go through? Google or LG? I bought mine from someone off Craigslist but haven't tried asking for a replacement since I've never had any type of warranty. Did you have to show any kind of receipt of buying it or anything or did they just simply say "Ok" and send you a refurbished one? Also, did you call them or email them?

I went through Google. All they did was ask for and run the lME number. I did not expect anything to come of it but I thought it was worth a try. I chatted online.

Well I just might do the same. If you bought it from a third party and it died yesterday and your already getting a refurbished one, I think I may have a shot. Good to know. Thanks
Well. Some progress here too.
Decided to give LG a go but as I bought it over ebay they wouldnt entertain any warranty work but gave me their out of warranty people called SBE here in the UK.
Contacted SBE and without any commitment on their behalf the fella said that they would look at it and if its not showing signs of damage and water etc then it should be covered as they have permission to replace faulty motherboards with only postage costs.
So am packing the phone off to them and see what happens. Anybody else experienced this route? Would be worth getting it fixed just to sell the damn thing afterwards.

Sure,
the verbage is a bit intimidating saying that they are putting full price for refurbished on hold on your account to see if it is covered by warranty but what they want to do is make sure you didn't run over it or drop it from a ten story building.

Yes, and then when they receive it and see it's not physically damaged (water, smashed screen) they refund you back the price of the phone. I didn't have to pay shipping either way.

It's kind of funny they would even hold onto the price of the phone seeing as the device isn't under warranty and it would be no loss to them. I mean, what would be the scenario where they would actually charge you the amount of the phone?

They send you the phone right away and give you 21 days to get the bad phone back to them. The hold is to make sure they get an undamaged phone returned to them.

Ah, ok. Well that makes sense then. I thought they would send it to you after they analyzed the damaged one.
