Gmail trouble via WiFi - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently purchased a new router, about three months ago Linksys 6900. Yesterday I was waiting on Gmail and it never came but when I turned off my cell phone Wifi at home and used 4G it came right in.
My yahoo, aol and Verizon e-mails work fine over WiFi and all my home computers that use e-mail are also fine, including gmail over Wifi, just not Gmail via cellphone.
I was hoping someone might have an idea why and how I might be able to fix it.
Thanks

"ghost" data connection

ive had this problem a few times on my titan, the top bar shows an idle data connection (i get push email from an exchange server) and when i try to use opera (or PIE, agile messenger, google maps, pocketping, remote desktop, even outlook) i get no data connection, the arrows turn white like its working but i can never make a connection to anything.
at first i thought it was DNS, and it just wasnt resolving the hostnames, but i cant ping or RDP to IP addresses either. it persists though a soft-reset too
last time this happened it was a few hours before i could get a data connection again, which is really annoying
i dont think the issue is with the phone though, as i can access the internet just fine via wifi, so im guessing there is little hope of being able to fix it on this end
im using DCDs 2.2.6 rom for sprint (but ive had the problem with previous 2.x roms too)

Email sync via 3G NOT wifi even though available

I have looked and looked, and cant seem to find a solution that works for me. I am with Telstra in Australia (why do Telstra like to make things so difficult??)
My problem is that my Outlook Email will only sync with exchange via 3G even though there is a working wifi connection availalable. I get heaps of mail so I am rapidly going through nearly 1G of data each month - even though I am on a good package this is not ideal!!
From my understanding of this thread ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611724&highlight=activesync+work+connection I updated the Broadcomm Network Adaptors to Internet (they were Work), and then deleted the proxy settings for the Telstra Internet connection.
BUT still my mail is updating over 3G and not wifi. I can access Internet etc over wifi though.
Interestingly, I can only update Bigpond mail over wifi and not 3G. Thats not a big deal as I get minimal mail to that account and I am happy to check it at home - its the Outlook email thats chewing up heaps of data that I worried about.
I hope that I cant be the only one with this problem so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it! (I know it will be one check box deep in the phone settings, I just dont know which one it is!)
Thanks
That's how it works. Push (Activesync connection) needs a direct connection between the server and device, so that the server can page the device when it's got something for it. This wouldn't work through wifi, because when you're on wifi you're behind a router, which doesn't allow connections from the outside to reach your device. So Activesync will always want to use the data connection.
One thing you can do is NOT to set activesync to receive new mail when it arrives, but only manually or at time intervals, it might work.
Or, simply set it to download only the first 5kB of each message, which is always enough to see what the mail is about , and you can always click "download whole message" for those you need. If you manage to use 1GB with 5kB messages, you're really spending your life on your email box
Thanks so much.
You would think that if Blackberry and Apple have managed to get their email to push over wifi that MS could get Direct Push to work over wifi too!! I've disabled MS Direct Push and changed Active Sync to check every 5 minutes. So, its not quite the same, but its near enough for me!
Thanks again ... I will stop searching for the solution now (and will reduce the download setting too ...)
Sarah, same exact problem here, it really annoyed me, then only way I could have used wifi to sync my outlook, Gmail, etc(which have the same issue) is to set the phone to Airplane mode and then enable wifi, only then it will sync via wifi.
Thank you Kilrah, that was a very spot on answer - it is very apreciated !
Cheers !

gmail app and WiFi

For some reason, my Gmail does not sync or push when I am on Wifi (all Roms I have tried so far)
Is this normal? Sync is fine when on 3g
go into settings>applications, find gmail and clear app data. that might help.
I didn't quite cover the issue...I can sync, but push doesn't seem to work right. Has been a problem on almost every version of gmail

is it doing the thing where you have the "3 unread" at the top of your app, but they don't show up as readable, or what?
are you rooted? backup, do a factory reset and set up gmail and see if the issue persists. if it does, then restore and try something else, if it fixes it, then just start over from scratch.
that's strange that gmail doesn't work right on wifi. it works fine for me. i'm thinking its either something with your profile, or your device specifically.
did you try clearing app data like i said in my last post?
This has been a problem with every rom I have tried - I am rooted. Never had this problem on my Droid. Push works fine on 3g, but does not work on WiFi unless I do a manual sync. Very strange. I have tried clearing the data, cache, and everything inbetween. I don't think it is a phone issue since all of my other data works fine on WiFi. Tried 2.2, 2.2.1, and even reverted back to 2.1, all have the problem. My wifi is set to never sleep, so that is not it. Also, I don't have any data settings turned off. Guess that Gmail just does not like WiFi
Been on WiFi all evening with no issues. The fact that it happens on multiple phones with multiple roms makes me think its something wrong with your gmail profile or something like that.
I'd say call VZW but they're gonna want you on an approved OS, so prolly wanna have that OTA froyo Rom handy before you call.

Looks like this is a problem for others as well...

I am going to see if the stock email program also suffers from this
Finally...fixed it
I wiped data and made a new gmail profile. Now my main profile is another gmail account. Then I added my normal gmail. All syncing properly. I spent about 2 hours combing through my gmail profiles on the computer and don't see anything. Oh well, working now

I've had a problem with pushing over institutional wifis, like guest wifis in hospitals and the like. Otherwise its been fine.

There is definately an issue with the institutional wifi...today I used wifi on the guest account at work and although my phone showed constant connection, I was able to see the phone get dropped continuously. It seems like these types of networks drop connections that are dormant for a short period of time

I'm living on WiFi only at my hotel since weds, its an institution access, so you have to refresh the connection about every 24 hours via a redirect to a confirmation page. No issues with any of my data, especially gmail. But good luck sending/receiving texts! There is literally no service in my room, and in the lobby I get 1X with no bars. It's brutal

[Q] Two mail accounts

Yesterday I tried to put a second G Mail account on my brother in laws Galaxy and it keeps saying bad data connection even though it is on a WI FI network and all other connections work.
Any ideas what is wrong with it?
Have you tried adding it over the mobile data connection?
I had a similar issue, where I couldn't add any of the built-in twitter/facebook accounts over wifi. Trying over 3G solved the problem.
Might be worth a try

Wifi data sync issues

I have an up to date rooted 6P and I've noticed that when wifi is on, I'm not receiving notifications and sync is VERY slow. It'll look like the app in use is frozen. For example, while testing I would send an email to myself from another mail app to my gmail. The outgoing message would never send. As soon as I switch wifi off, it instantly sends. If Wifi is on, I won't get notifications, but as soon as I switch it off, I"m flooded with all of the ones I should have been getting.
I have other android phones laying around connected to my wifi and they get notifications, so I'm thinking it's something with the 6P? The only thing I've thought to change about my router is to put it into bridge mode because I'm using it with a U-Verse gateway, although if the router was the issue, you'd think my other devices would have problems as well.
I've googled the issue a lot and have only found posts from back in Nov-Feb about google apps/gmail specifically and it was something google pushed a fix for. This will be any app, gmail, hangouts, facebook messenger, slack, etc.
I appreciate any advice! Phone has been reset, router rebooted, etc already.
