Since the KitKat update my camera takes about 3-5 seconds from pressing the button to it taking it.
1. Is this a known issue?
2. Is there a work around?
3. Is there a way to do clean flash without affecting Knox?

as @ShadowLea said, I agree.
But... Did you see a progressbar "processing" after u press button? If yes, maybe u use auto mode?
I normally change to sport mode. It will just shoot directly after u press the button. This mode will bypass by the autofocus, stabilization, low light sensor. As the automode, it will check your focus first, do stabilization (if you on it), and for low light, it will try to adjust the best result first. That's why the processing a bit slow.
On my device, if I do it on a good light condition, and my hand not shaking while taking picture, automode will be fast as sport mode as well. Nothing wrong with KK actually.
if you want a clean flash, you can just find a firmware you like on samfirmware, and flash through ODIN. After finish, do a full wipe from recovery (data & cache partition on stock recovery).
Cheers.
Smart stabilisation was off. All settings set to auto.

try not to use auto.
because the camera will try its best to give best result with auto setting.
play around with the camera... the note 3 camera is quite good with a lot of setting.
To be frank, with all camera apps available at playstore, I've been reducing the usage of my DSLR, and change to note camera, since Note 2.
And now with the Note 3 camera, hehehe... my DSLR has been sitting inside my cabinet for 3 months :cyclops:
And for this Note 3, I've been using just stock cam. No other apps installed.
Turn off Auto settings. Particularly the 'Focus before taking shot'.

I detest Stock, much prefer FV5 or CapturePro... But as much as I love my Note it'll never replace my EOS 70D. I'm an abstract photographer, and the Note's camera just isn't the same as a serieus Macro lens

I agree... FV5 is good. CapturePro never use before.
And I like that cozymag. Especially if add the macro lens (or you can use magnifier to be simple) ...
Result is great for macro photography.

I looked for this topic on the Internet, found many people with the same issue, but haven't found any answers.
When I use the front facing camera using the camera app, in medium light conditions, at the beginning, it's a bit dark, but the camera obviously seems to adjust few moments later so that the picture is very clear, and by very clear I mean it's not dark in any way. In the same exact moment and conditions, I open snapchat, the picture on the screen is very very very dark, I can't stress enough on the significant difference between the two pictures. I wonder what is the reason for this? and is it fixable?
Anyone? Is my question unclear?
About the camera.
When you are in a movie hall and come out if it after 2 hours do you see everything clear in a jiffy?
Exactly that way a camera needs to adjust its brightness and exposure..it is a machine anyway..
About the snapchat thing..I couldnt understand it very clear..do you want to say that the brightness does not increase or something..
This maybe a snapchat developer thing..they havent provided us with the exposure settings and stuff..
The same exact way, many camera apps differ from one another..instagram has a better picture quality in lowlight/frontcam than retrica (my opinion).
So it differes from app to app..dev to dev.
Just like Google Camera and Samsung Stock Camera app.
Samsung knows its max so they pitch in 70-80% of the best..

Thanks for answering, and yes that's what I meant, the camera does adjust its brightness and exposure in the stock camera app, but not in snapchat, the picture stays very dark. The issue is, it's not a lowlight condition I'm talking about, it's perfectly clear in the stock camera app, but too dark using snapchat. It may be a developer thing after all, so thanks again.
Okay just to be clear, here are pictures i just took with both apps. The room is well lit, can't be normal.

It can't be normal for such significant difference to exist.

Snapchat has something weird in that case..it cannot auto adjust exposure values..

A workaround would be to make the pictures with the normal camera app. Then use the Xposed module "Snapshare" to send the pictures you took to snapchat.

Yeah that's what I'm doing right now, but it would've been a lot easier if they fixed the app itself.
In putting together the camera locked/unlocked comparison, I found that the locked Sony did a good job of pulling out details in low light environments, while pictures under normal lighting conditions were (mostly) unaffected.
This morning, before heading out for work, I stumbled across an app in the Play Store called Night Camera and after a quick test, found that it actually does a fairly comparable job with the Sony "high and mighty", "I'm gonna delete your DRM keys if you try to steal it" algorithms.
Here are the comparison shots. First one taken with the Sony camera on a locked bl phone, and the second taken with Night Camera on a phone that has been BL unlocked.

We all know that sony software with their own algorithms is better than this "Night Camera", but the point, imho, is that your hardware will be the same with the same capabilities with or without drm.
It's only a software related problem.
I think I'm going to unlock my bootloader now, how often happens to you guys to take a photo completely in the dark? In other condition seems there are no big differences, but I'm not a photographer myself.
On the other hand I had an s4 before the z3c, always been on aosp rom, and I've never missed any of the samsung camera capabilities, even knowing they were degraded using google camera.
yes, that is a nice confirmation. Though I've always been convinced that this is just a software problem and sony does not actually degrade the hardware.
Keep in mind that the same photo using an iPhone 5s results in a nearly black picture!

Yup, but I'm shooting with the High ISO mode, it's only taking pics at 3200 ISO.
nope, not even close.
If only Sony's camera software was as competent in other lighting situations as it was in low light conditions, they would have the best camera experience on the market, hands down.

@ joshm.1219 What do you think of the camera compared to other phones you have owned? I recall you on the note II forums, does the camera perform much better all around?

Purchasing mine after work around 5pm est. My main focus right now is the camera since I'm pretty much impressed with everything about this phone when I messed around with store demo.
I'll post a whole bunch of shots and comparisons to my S5 around 8-9 est if all goes well. I did notice that reds were a bit over saturated in the samples I took at Verizon. Which was a big issue for me with my original Moto X.

Looks damn good, if people complain about that then they just need to use a DSLR.
Here is a couple from today....
Are these being alerted when uploaded? I assume they aren't 21MP files being uploaded to the forums
I think the problem is people have crazy expectations. Its a good camera but its never going to touch a dedicated camera with large sensors. I'm now switched to Google Camera because Moto one doesn't really seem to be much better.
These are using Moto camera still.
Low light shots I took while messing around with our prototype mini 3D printer this morning. Just quick snaps, no effort at all... Pretty impressive, although reds seem to be a little off -- oversaturated.

However, I do have a post with some serious concerns about the camera (link below) that I need to further test this weekend.

I'll try to post more pictures throughout the day.

I'd have to say with the physical limits of sensor and aperture size the output is pretty decent and not overly over processed. A raw output would still be nice though.
Good afternoon all. Got an issue that I can see several posts about but never quite got any answers (please correct me or guide me in the right direction if I missed something!)
Long story short, any photo I take in the front camera with my S4 (seemingly regardless of what ROM) results in blurry shots. Snapchat takes fine shots, which confuses me.
The results with any camera app using almost any of the available settings, although varying, give the same basic result. Blurry/low quality images. I haven't yet checked the actual resolution output yet but they have all been taken using full res (2.1mp) and the next setting, if I remember correctly, is 1.6mp.
ROM-wise it seems irrelevant as to what one I use. I had official Samsung 4.4 (I believe) when I got the phone a few months ago, but then went back to using my iPhone briefly. When there was a decent Lollipop released I switched back to the S4, but the front camera issue persists.
Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance and if I've missed anything I should have said let me know.
So you say you had the issue on the official stock too?
If it happens across multiple roms then it's mostly a hardware issue. Or you just have too high standards for the camera
Hey thanks for the reply!
I BELIEVE it worked fine on the stock firmware. It's not an expectation issue, as, for example, Snapchat takes photos that are exactly like what it shows on screen. The photos look incredible on the live preview on the camera app, its the output that's bad quality. I'll try show what I mean in uploaded photos in my next post.

Very ironically I've just had a message on my phone saying 'updating camera software please wait' which SEEMS to have made a slight difference.. Shall see if that continues, but it's still outputting at much lower quality than is displayed.
When you're installing roms, do you wipe everything?

Lolipop based on Google play editon ones or any AOSP, CyanogenMod roms have really bad quality in terms of front camera. that's why i'm stuck on touchwiz because it has a better camera with so much modes. Front and back. :good:
So if you want good camera. go back to touchwiz. But iPhones has a great camera for selfies. so keep the iphone if you take a lot of selfie.

Hi guys!
Been loving my S8 so far, but I don't know if I am missing something or it's just the camera that works like this, but, photos taken outside come out bright and no problems.
But whenever I try to take photos of my 8 month ols son, 6 out of 10 times, I end up with a blurry shot. Am I missing some setting? Anyone else having the same problem?
I noticed a small milisecond kinda delay after taking the shot sometimes, doesn't matter if I have internal storage selected or SD card as save directory.
Here are some samples of the results I get.
Tried sports mode and while there's no delay when taking the shot, I get kinda the same results.

He is clearly moving and in low light camera needs to have lens open longer to expose picture properly. To fix it you need to switch into PRO mode and then you have 3 options which do pretty much the same thing different ways:
1. add more or stronger lights into the room, 2. manually set ISO as high as you can tolerate noise (probably need to do few test shots) 3. set shutter speed at at least 1/100 sec or shorter depending on speed of movement, here you risk under exposure, high ISO noise. Also you can combine 1 and 2 or 3.

Thanks for the advice. Used to get better results in the same conditions with the Nexus 6P that's why I found this strange.
Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Either your kid is growing up and moving faster or Nexus defaulted to higher ISO settings in similar conditions. At 1.7 the lens on S8 is most likely brighter than 6P, but the ISO setting is double edged sword: higher the ISO less blur in fast moving object, but more noise, which could ruin the picture. Another way to do it is to time it just when the movement is smallest and if your timing is off, then set the cam into burst mode, you'll have whole bunch of pictures to choose from. S8 has one of the best, most capable cameras on any phone.
