[Q] worth upgrading from 4.1.2? - Galaxy Note II General

Hi guys my phone is locked with 4.1.2 stock rooted. I never updated for the fear of knox stuff and the risk of beeing unable to downgrade.
My phone works great and battery life is awesome. Is it something that really worth upgrading?
Can you give me some suggestione were to go?
Thank you
Andrea

For me the changes are not really that big, i AM running 4.4.2 though atm.
Even when i had the phone on 4.1.2, it was performing more than excellent.
Make a nandroid of ur current install, flash a diff one, and see if you like it or not.
+points on 4.1.2 for me: Simplistic Framework + App (this was defo good, and prefer it over Wanam Xposed, which is also very nice must i add)
+points on 4.4.2 for me: just a bit nicer UI, a few apps depending on 4.4+
Just reference, 4.1.2 Touchwiz ran better than it's CyanogenMod alternative
4.3 i found smoother on Cyanogen than Touchwiz
4.4.2 i can barely notice the difference between CM/Touchwiz performance.

I regret it myself.
Though a lot of my problems (phone freezing every 24 hours, requiring reboot) and other pain seems to have gone away since I removed Knox (I installed it to test, then uninstalled it)
If it's easy for you to stay on 4.1.2 I really would - I wish I could go back.
Note: Not rooted, not running a kiddie ROM.

can you clarify me if I can revert to 4.1.2 even if from stock 4.3 or I have to pay attention of knox stuff?

You can revert everything apart from the boot loader. Which means Knox warranty will be void when you do it.

Why don't you install pre-rooted stock or custom ROM? Just flash MJ5 bootloader from Odin - it is compatible with both 4.1.2 and 4.3 ROMs, and then choose custom ROM. The advantages are huge - if you get one with Note 3 features. I'm on Criskelo and battery life is the same, speed is the same and I have Note 3 apps - soo cool. Also then you can use Xposed modules like Wanam Exposed and XUI which are great....

You can revert everything apart from the boot loader.

4.3 = 4.1...
I no longer believe in upgrading the operating system in Android anymore. It's pointless and a waste of time.
Every time you buy a new phone, you basically get an Android upgrade, there is no point in getting android upgrade during that time.
People who constantly flash new roms just have too much time.

Im on 4.4.2 stock leaked....and works great so far...I like all the note3 features...and kitkat its fast and smooth...I test all the roms out there...and Dnv4RC its the best I try...make a nandroid backup and test yourself...its the only way.
Cheers

If I were you I would really wait for official 4.4 release (probably next month) + Omega or DN3 (or your favorite rom) update with that base and do nothing until then.

Stay on 4.2.1. I regret updating. .. now stuck with Knox. On 4.2.1 you can install custom 4.4 roms.

Reluctant to update from 4.3

I’ve been holding off on updating to KK (for a long time ) and after reading some threads I’m not convinced it’s an improvement. Is there any really compelling reason to update to KK? Seems to be quite a few performance complaints. People seem to be having mixed results with Lollipop with many complaining about their KK experience too.
I’m really happy with JB. Battery life and overall system performance is great. Plus I like the blue system icons better than white.
What is your experience with KK and would you recommend updating? Why?
Um don't update to KitKat...update to lollipop. Its much better
Don't. I gave 5.0 a try & it is worst than KitKat. WAAAAYYY worse.
I ended up flashing back to 4.3 JellyBean.

Its better than KitKat was. What really works well is if you flash an f2fs filesystem based ROM. It makes a huge difference and the tablet actually works.
Well I think this debate answers my question. I'll stick with JB until the smoke clears. Thanks to all who responded.
KitKat is OK, but Lollipop is awful...
Don't do it.
KitKat ruined my tilapia. The smell was horrible.
Seriously, though, grab CM 10 if you have the urge to flash something other than stock. KK ruins the battery life of the 7. I tried SlimKat 8. I tried CM 11 nightly as well as a snapshot. I even tried Google's official KK, which was what got me started flashing the thing. They just are horrible on the battery. SlimKat was the best experience besides CM 10. But CM 10 is the best so far IMHO.
Haven't charged my tablet since "downgrading" to stock 4.3 in a week now. Still has plenty of battery left. KK would have eaten through 1/2 the battery in a day. Just some more food for thought if anyone reading this is still thinking they want KK on their 7. Or if they already did the dirty deed and are wondering what they lost.

Of course we're still around. I just got a new battery for my phone.
The Google Play Edition S4 will be getting an update to Android 5.1 any day now and I'll be putting that on my phone once it's out.
But there are numerous KitKat and Lollipop with no bloat and have hotspot.

Mostly Stock if you want KitKat or TW base ROM.
Wicked X once the debloated ROM comes out install that for a black themed TW ROM.

What one person considers bloatware another doesn't... Why can't you debloat yourself? It's not like it's hard, you know what you don't want... anyways, I just released this last week- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3086132

this is true, I don't do this enough to remember usually I find a rom and stick with it. then when my buddys are using their voice text and sharing files with wifi share or something. My phone never does. I blame my lack of knowledge in rooting and having a rooted phone :? lol
thanks I will ponder thru some info, I know there are specific add ons you can do to change the key board or other things... well all things really ... totally customizable
I am still not good at customizing everything to my likings. Do you guys all do it from your phone via recovery. or do you do it with Odin

Recovery, Odin is really only good for flashing back to stock.
I actually didn't know you could flash em back :/
Completly back that is. Well I am going to flash it I think right now.

Rooted and on MDC (L-720) is it worth updating?

I am asking for information, because I haven't used my S4 in over a year. My son needs a phone to use and I'm wondering how far it's worth updating my old S4? I rooted it when rooting became available, but never updated it past MDC. What I'm asking for feedback on, is how far it's worth updating it? As in, is updating as far as Lollipop worth it, or is it a battery killer? Or are there any other major problems? If so, how far do you suggest updating? I would probably have him running a stockish, but maybe debloated, TW ROM, as I don't think he isn't interested in learning AOSP. If I update all the way to Lollipop, do I need to Odin all the "official" updates between MDC and OD2? I know I'll have to unroot at the very least so I can activate my S4 on his phone number. Thanks for any advice.

I think it is worth it, battery life gets worse with each version of Android but not enough to not update. My S4 runs good enough that I decided to not upgrade for the last 6 months. OH1 is actually the latest and I just saw that they are about to release OK3. You only have to Odin one file, you don't need to do the updates in between.

Yes, the only reason I would say to go with OD2 over OH1 is if you want to unlock for another carrier. OH1 doesn't have an unlocked modem yet and you can't downgrade firmware once you've upgraded past KitKat.
If you are having trouble with the process there is a step by step in the installation instructions (about halfway through the first post) for my ROM here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3115583

Looking for a custom rom

Hello guys,
Right now I got android 5.0.1 with knox.
I'm looking for a custom rom that looks like that:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

}
It is importent it will be custom rom because I want to be able to instal xposed, and it has to be for android 5.0.1 or above, because from what I understood, knox blocks downgrade attempts.
If someone can help me I will appreciate it very much.
P.S
It should also support Hebrew(witch is right to left).
Hi,
Use this step -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58985536
to downgrade. If your bootloader is locked, you can't downgrade nor root it.
But, instead following download ARO firmware, download Stock KitKat firmware from your phone region.
But, since Xposed is supported on Lollipop firmware via arter97's one, I suggest you to flash one of deodexed custom ROMs and install Xposed on it.

First of all, thanks for your help.
I didn't quite understood though - should I follow the guide you gave me but with Stock KitKat from my region , or with a costume Lollipop ?
Personally, I really like the layout I showed in the image, just need to be able for it to support exposed.
The kitkat layout and lollipop layout on touchwiz are pretty much the same, only the colors are different.
If you don't want to go through the process of downgrading, then just flash a custom touchwiz rom. There are couple in the android development section. Take your pick. Make sure it is deodexed.

Do you have any good recommendations? I prefer rom which don't have all the junk apps and "s finder" and such..
I'm not a fan of toucwhiz roms. There are 3 or 4 of them here on the forum. And there also is Echoe rom which left xda but they still have their own site. Just google them.

Looking for help to pick a good KitKat rom

I used to do a lot of this back in my Bionic days, but I've just been stock for a few of years on my hltevzw Note 3. I've been happy with my stock 4.4.2 KitKat except that It's been eating the battery lately. The bloatware seems to be unhappy that I won't cave to Big Red, so it just runs up the CPU until the battery dies.
Anyhow, I bought a spare Note 3, unlocked the bootloader, and got TWRP going on it. It's on 4.4.2 right now (stock) and I'm ready to flash something bloat-free. I've read stories about GPS or MMS or modem not working with some roms and I can't have that. I just need a rom that will run like stock without the bloat. I use the pee out of GPS, I go through 35 gigs of data a month, I text instead of calling, and I still accept the occasional phone call.
What would be recommended for something like that?

Jasmine Rom 6.1 it is based on OF1 but works fine with the 4.4.2 bootloader (unlocked) and 4.4.2 modem. I run it with idlekernal or also with the reccomended leankernel. Very battery friendly.

I saw where people had talked about Jasmine. I'll take a look. I also heard about Jackyaway. But aren't some of the roms not good for VZW or Dev phones?
I installed the lk_hltevzw-v6.4.zip via TWRP an all seems to be the same as stock KitKat. How do I know that there is a change?

No changes to the phone according to the "about" screen. It must not be as easy as flashing a rom from TWRP.

According to what you posted, you only installed the lean kernel. You didn't install the rom itself. Read the link I posted, follow all the steps for dev edition. You don't need to flash the modem, nc4 modem works fine.
