Rooted and on MDC (L-720) is it worth updating? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I am asking for information, because I haven't used my S4 in over a year. My son needs a phone to use and I'm wondering how far it's worth updating my old S4? I rooted it when rooting became available, but never updated it past MDC. What I'm asking for feedback on, is how far it's worth updating it? As in, is updating as far as Lollipop worth it, or is it a battery killer? Or are there any other major problems? If so, how far do you suggest updating? I would probably have him running a stockish, but maybe debloated, TW ROM, as I don't think he isn't interested in learning AOSP. If I update all the way to Lollipop, do I need to Odin all the "official" updates between MDC and OD2? I know I'll have to unroot at the very least so I can activate my S4 on his phone number. Thanks for any advice.

I think it is worth it, battery life gets worse with each version of Android but not enough to not update. My S4 runs good enough that I decided to not upgrade for the last 6 months. OH1 is actually the latest and I just saw that they are about to release OK3. You only have to Odin one file, you don't need to do the updates in between.

So, are you on OH1, then?

Yes, the only reason I would say to go with OD2 over OH1 is if you want to unlock for another carrier. OH1 doesn't have an unlocked modem yet and you can't downgrade firmware once you've upgraded past KitKat.

If you are having trouble with the process there is a step by step in the installation instructions (about halfway through the first post) for my ROM here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3115583

[Q] Which stock ROM do I need to flash on this version of Galaxy S4?

Hello, I had recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 off a local used phones seller for cheap. Now I am confused on which official stock ROM it should be running.
I come from a fairly easy section of XDA, The Moto G and Xperia Z sections, hence I find it really confusing to get the right firmware..
My main intention is to get to the proper firmware and update it to the latest available. I think my phone and Firmware don't match right now so.
Here is what details I have of this Phone:
Note : I have also found out that some users who bought a Galaxy S4 from eBay or local classifieds also have this problem, having a different firmware from the model they have.

From the info you posted, looks like you have an SGH-I337 with nb1 bootloader and with a custom rom installed from the I9505. The current OS is 4.4.2.
The latest AT&T stock firmware is 5.0.1. To return the phone to fully stock, you need to flash the stock nb1 (4.4.2) firmware, then upgrade to nj4 (4.4.4) or oc3 (5.0.1). You can get everything you need from [GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap.
Before you decide whether to put Kitkat or Lollipop on it, you might want to read this thread.
@creepyncrawly Thank you! Just the answer I was looking for, was really worried about which stock ROM to flash. I have also found out that some people who also buy a used Galaxy S4 from eBay face exactly this.. a device with the wrong F/W. Anyways thanks I will update where necessary.
Edit : Will changing ROMs trip Knox? I can see mine isn't tripped yet (0x0)..

Flashing stock will not change the knox flag. It's most likely irrelevant, because the phone is surely not still under warranty.
@creepyncrawly So will reverting from OC3 to nj1 flag it? I have a friend who wanted to know.

[Q] Question regarding system updates to rooted s4 (stock rom)

Hello,
I have a Sprint Galaxy S4 (but you knew that.) that is currently running 4.4.2 Android. I have rooted my phone, but I never installed any roms, I am still using the stock touchwiz. For a while now, my phone has been telling me "system update downloaded" and wants me to install it.
Basically: How do I go about updating my phone without breaking something due to my root status. Should I un-root? Should I just hit update? I'm skeptical because I don't know much about fixing my phone if I accidentally brick it.
Alternatively, would I be better just getting a rom, like Cyanogen? I don't hate touchwiz as much as I probably should, haha.
Side note, I apologize if this has been raised before, I have been searching for answers to this since the first time my phone notified me of the update, between Google searches and searching this forum, I haven't found a topic that addresses my issue.

You coins just try a custom Touchwiz ROM like mine (Wicked X). You can't install the OTA on a rooted system, you need to unroot to take the OTA.

[Q] Help Obtaining Sprint SGS4 Stock Rom

Please xda brethren, I need some help. My niece purchased a sgs4, which was rooted for like $150. She was in need of a phone. Anyway, the damn thing has been permanently frozen after a week of use. So i figured maybe flashing it back to stock rom. I found the links to download the stock rom, but its taking forever to get it down. I've been at this since 9:30 THIS MORNING and it hasn't downloaded fully yet. the download keeps stopping. I have to be back at work in 6 1/2 hours and i haven't even slept yet. Can someone please out of the kindness of your heart provide me with the latest stock rom for the sgs4. I'm dying over here for sleep. :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Get latest update to my rooted i337ucuamdl with 4.2.2

Hello!
I have AT&T (i337ucuamdl) Samsung Galaxy S4 with 4.2.2 installed. I have rooted the phone years ago and have not touched since. How do I update the phone to the latest 5.XX version? Is it possible to preserve the root? I saw the warning about MDL version that it is not supported. Anyone?
Thank you!
Look here.
Will I be able to use OTA updates with this ROM?
Thank you!

If you really still have the mdl bootloader, then you don't want to do an ota update, which will replace the exploitable mdl bootloader with a locked one.
If you have already done ota updates on the phone in the past, then you are already on a locked bootloader, and the above link would be irrelevant.
How did you get 4.2.2 onto the phone without replacing the UCUAMDL bootloader?

This is what I have now. Interesting that some applications are saying the phone is not rooted. I have done it 2 years ago. I cannot recall how I did it.
Thank you!
The application tells me I am not rooted.
I guess it is better to repeat the root procedure now.

This will root and install TWRP on MDL.

This will give you stock OC3 lollipop and keep your MDL bootloader.

I have rooted the phone successfully yesterday. I got a problem during my backup with FlashFire. Apparently something happened during backup and my microSD card got locked. What ever I do now I cannot format it or write anything on it. Anyone experienced it?
Thank you!
Yeah. I had 2 go bad on me out of the blue. Thankfully, they were SanDisk, which has a lifetime guarantee.
Snapping along on stock rooted 0C4 I337, wishing for some good up to date lollipop ROM's to throw into flashfire
Installed OC3. Do you know if the OC4 is available? It fixes the security bug that I would like to use.
Thank you!

Looking for help to pick a good KitKat rom

I used to do a lot of this back in my Bionic days, but I've just been stock for a few of years on my hltevzw Note 3. I've been happy with my stock 4.4.2 KitKat except that It's been eating the battery lately. The bloatware seems to be unhappy that I won't cave to Big Red, so it just runs up the CPU until the battery dies.
Anyhow, I bought a spare Note 3, unlocked the bootloader, and got TWRP going on it. It's on 4.4.2 right now (stock) and I'm ready to flash something bloat-free. I've read stories about GPS or MMS or modem not working with some roms and I can't have that. I just need a rom that will run like stock without the bloat. I use the pee out of GPS, I go through 35 gigs of data a month, I text instead of calling, and I still accept the occasional phone call.
What would be recommended for something like that?

Jasmine Rom 6.1 it is based on OF1 but works fine with the 4.4.2 bootloader (unlocked) and 4.4.2 modem. I run it with idlekernal or also with the reccomended leankernel. Very battery friendly.

I saw where people had talked about Jasmine. I'll take a look. I also heard about Jackyaway. But aren't some of the roms not good for VZW or Dev phones?
I installed the lk_hltevzw-v6.4.zip via TWRP an all seems to be the same as stock KitKat. How do I know that there is a change?

No changes to the phone according to the "about" screen. It must not be as easy as flashing a rom from TWRP.

According to what you posted, you only installed the lean kernel. You didn't install the rom itself. Read the link I posted, follow all the steps for dev edition. You don't need to flash the modem, nc4 modem works fine.
