Get latest update to my rooted i337ucuamdl with 4.2.2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello!
I have AT&T (i337ucuamdl) Samsung Galaxy S4 with 4.2.2 installed. I have rooted the phone years ago and have not touched since. How do I update the phone to the latest 5.XX version? Is it possible to preserve the root? I saw the warning about MDL version that it is not supported. Anyone?
Thank you!

Look here.

Will I be able to use OTA updates with this ROM?
Thank you!

If you really still have the mdl bootloader, then you don't want to do an ota update, which will replace the exploitable mdl bootloader with a locked one.
If you have already done ota updates on the phone in the past, then you are already on a locked bootloader, and the above link would be irrelevant.
How did you get 4.2.2 onto the phone without replacing the UCUAMDL bootloader?

This is what I have now. Interesting that some applications are saying the phone is not rooted. I have done it 2 years ago. I cannot recall how I did it.
Thank you!

The application tells me I am not rooted.
I guess it is better to repeat the root procedure now.

This will root and install TWRP on MDL.

This will give you stock OC3 lollipop and keep your MDL bootloader.

I have rooted the phone successfully yesterday. I got a problem during my backup with FlashFire. Apparently something happened during backup and my microSD card got locked. What ever I do now I cannot format it or write anything on it. Anyone experienced it?
Thank you!

Yeah. I had 2 go bad on me out of the blue. Thankfully, they were SanDisk, which has a lifetime guarantee.
Snapping along on stock rooted 0C4 I337, wishing for some good up to date lollipop ROM's to throw into flashfire

Installed OC3. Do you know if the OC4 is available? It fixes the security bug that I would like to use.
Thank you!

I found this: Root note 3
However which kernel file should I use for the verizon note 3? And is this method still functional?
Thank you
Found this for the S5 4.4.4 nk2 verizon. S5 nk2 root
anything like this will work for the note 3 on nk1? what kernels to use?
Bumping this thread. I'm in the same predicament. Any options?
Towelroot and framaroot don't work. CF auto root has nothing for us yet. I even tried universal root de la vega, nothing has worked.
At this point I'm desperate enough to try something like kango but even it doesn't support sm-n900v. I give up....I think the Note 4 & it's bounty is attracting the majority of attention.
well i tried to downgrade the kernel to a previous so can root like that and then upgrade the kernel to normal nk1, i let u know
SM-N900V 4.4.4 KTU84P.N900VVRUDNK1 Root?
bumping in this thread as well i have a SM-N900V 4.4.4 KTU84P.N900VVRUDNK1 and in the same situation. Any luck on the downgrade?
SM-N900V Root
WOW, looks like this is a common problem these days. I am having the exact same trouble, I can't get mine unlocked, rooted, or anything and i've even tried the paid sites.
Bumping this again. Any news on this yet? Anyone know which kernel files?
bumper too
Bump
P.S. How big of a bounty do you think would be necessary to attract the right people to solve this?
I will donate 100 $
http://www.usoftsmartphone.com/t319505.html what if we put this on top of nk1? Can anyone try this and report back?
Bump bump bump. Downgrade kernel. Root upgrade?
Gonna try this tomorrow and report back.

Well you obviously didn't report back. I already know the answer though, it didn't work. If you read it says you need to use SS which isn't even possible with a locked bootloader. I've been trying everything and combinations of everything with no luck. I'm not too worried about bricking as I have 2 unused Note 3s here which are useless to me without root. One was my wifes old phone and another was put together out of spare parts. I even tried ordering a broken phone from eBay hoping it hadn't been updated beyond 4.4.2....it was on 4.4.4. So now I have 2 N900Vs on 4.4.4 with no root/recovery options available.

Easy root strategy available yet for l720t on OF1

I have a Sprint S4 L720t on Lollipop build OF1. I have tried Kingroot 3.0, and the newest Kingroot from the website with no success. I have Google this problem many times over the last few months with nothing but old strategies that no longer work coming up as results. Has ANYONE successfully rooted the sprint model, on lollipop, and could you please post this strategy here, or link me to instructions on how to do it? Any method will suffice as I am getting desperate. And FYI there is no way to downgrade to Kitkat once you take the OTA update, becausee even Odin with a stock kitkat rom will "fail". Please help. Also note that the l720t has a locked bootloader I believe.
Thanks

No, it is not locked, only AT&T and Verizon do that. The bootloader does prevent you from downgrading firmware (Knox). Two choices: Odin TWRP and flash SuperSU or Odin CF Auto Root. Birth are by Chainfire.

Being scared doesnt get me anywhere... so i took you advice...
I downloaded the newest twrp for my device that could be flashed with ODIN (2.8.4.0)
and the newest SuperSU (Beta 2.49)
Copied SuperSU to my SDcard... Flashed the TWRP with Odin... Booted to TWRP and installed the SuperSU, then did a factory reset, and VOILA ... Rooted l720t on OF1 firmware... Thanks for the help bro!

Rooted and on MDC (L-720) is it worth updating?

I am asking for information, because I haven't used my S4 in over a year. My son needs a phone to use and I'm wondering how far it's worth updating my old S4? I rooted it when rooting became available, but never updated it past MDC. What I'm asking for feedback on, is how far it's worth updating it? As in, is updating as far as Lollipop worth it, or is it a battery killer? Or are there any other major problems? If so, how far do you suggest updating? I would probably have him running a stockish, but maybe debloated, TW ROM, as I don't think he isn't interested in learning AOSP. If I update all the way to Lollipop, do I need to Odin all the "official" updates between MDC and OD2? I know I'll have to unroot at the very least so I can activate my S4 on his phone number. Thanks for any advice.

I think it is worth it, battery life gets worse with each version of Android but not enough to not update. My S4 runs good enough that I decided to not upgrade for the last 6 months. OH1 is actually the latest and I just saw that they are about to release OK3. You only have to Odin one file, you don't need to do the updates in between.

Yes, the only reason I would say to go with OD2 over OH1 is if you want to unlock for another carrier. OH1 doesn't have an unlocked modem yet and you can't downgrade firmware once you've upgraded past KitKat.
If you are having trouble with the process there is a step by step in the installation instructions (about halfway through the first post) for my ROM here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3115583

How Do You Find Bootloader Version?

How do you check to see what version bootloader you have? I have unlocked my bootloader on my Note 3 and am running OF1/5.0. Ready to install TWRP and new ROM. But, not sure if I have a 4.3 or 4.4 bootloader and can't seem to find a simple answer and how to confirm.

Thank you for the recommendation. I dig the app, though I still don't know which bootloader I have going by the 4.3/4.4 scale. I'm assuming by now I have the most current one, which ever one that is, because I installed the latest TWRP and am running CM13 with no issues thus far.

The last 3 digits represent the OS/bootloader/firmware versions. In my case, bootloader is NC4 which is 4.4.2, my baseband (modem) is NK1 which is 4.4.4 and the ROM base is OF1 which is 5.0

[Discussion] OTAs on Rooted Huawei/Honor phones- Confirmed

Saw many post from new users and senior members as well and most of the time there are lot of confusion on the OTA part, especially for the rooted phone. Few says it gets (I am one of them) and few says it doesn’t as rooting capabilities modifies the system boot.img and also we have unlocked bootloader so device wont get the OTAs. I have been using the Huawei/Honor phones for 2 years now and have been getting all the OTAs on rooted phone and confirmed the same many time but still there are lot of confusion and users thinks they wont get OTA on rooted phone.
Just confirming here that you will receive OTAs on rooted phone without any issues. This is 2nd update on my phone since rooted in past 2 months.

Note- I am not using any firmware finder or other things for this as I dont trust on FF as it messed my Honor 5C in February and I given up on it.
Instructions-
If you are rooted but then rolled back to stock recovery, just download the OTA and update.
If you are rooted with TWRP recovery, flash the stock recovery first and then download the OTA to update. (TWRP wont be able to update OTA)
