I posted this in the PRI bounty thread but don't want it to get lost and I'm curious what other people's results will be with it.
I noticed something interesting today that may be an Evo bug... So I turned 4G on when I was in traffic on 6th Avenue to run some speed tests... got 8megs, no surprise there... but I left it on... later I was in Denver waiting for my group therapy class and was downloading and browsing and noticed it was flying. Did a speed test and I was getting 1.7-2.1Mbps consistently.
I shut off 4G and went to test later and was back to 500-900 speeds. Turned 4G back on and was immediately back to the 1.7-2.1Mbps levels.
I noticed when I turned on 4G that the 3G data arrows started moving like crazy each time, then stopped.
Can someone test this for me? To do this test you need to be on a tower that you KNOW can handle the faster speeds. I tried it all over the place today and even at home where I can't usually pass 300, I got 600. Turned off 4G and back down to 300. Turned it back on, back up to 5-600. Hit 900 at one point.
Just did a test in my room with 2 bars and got 750... turned off 4G and shut the phone on, turned it back on and got 500 consistently. Turned 4G back on and got 876, 1114, 1140, 865, and 974.
Maybe the PRI update fixed the link between 4G being turned off and slow 3G speeds? Try it and post your results...
Oh and use the Xtremelabs speedtest - speedtest.net is crap.
EDIT: By the way, previous to this, the fastest I ever saw my phone go was 1Mbps - in the same areas I was testing today.
What the F, Batman!?! Definitely makes a big difference. From 75 kB/s to 139 kB/s in one test. Bars of service shot up from 0-1 to a solid 2, also.
Sent from my EVO, the true iPhone killer!
Sorry...cannot confirm. I had no discernible difference with 4G on or off. I have 5 or 6 bars with 500-1000 kbps download and 150-200 kbps upload. Get the same readings on Xtremelabs with 4G on and off. Sorry.

Seems to work on my end. That's an interesting find. Seems if you turn 4g on and its nor available where you are they boost the 3g speed. Very interesting.

I could be wrong but it seems like I get better data speeds with the 4G radio turned on in a non 4G area.
I'm not rooted. Running the latest software release.

Went back to the house where I have one or two bars of signal and I still do not see any difference except that my overall speed is about half what it was. But no difference between 4G on or off. I'm running Fresh 3.1.0.1 with stock kernel in a non-4G area.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I ran three speed tests with it off and three with it on and then averaged the max. While it was running, the sustained throughput was almost exactly the same. The averages were:
with 4g off: 1142 down 199 up
with 4g on: 1156 down 217 up
Not much difference.
I think that many people don't get that the 3g speeds are subject to change at any given time, that is why there can be drastic changes in speed. Too many people on this board are succumbing to the placebo effect. Just my observation.

Im just waiting for the fix to the PRI issue hoping that when it comes out people find their 3G speeds remains the same. Now how eventful would that be. Cause maybe its is just a matter of towers cause I'm on 1.34 pri and 3G test still hits 1016 down and 200 up.

Then they will just say that the pri fix is broken!
Sorry it didn't have positive effects for everyone.
In the Denver area, at the very least, I've confirmed it on my Evo and a coworkers Evo. We regularly are getting two megs now... if we shut off the 4G, it takes about 10 or 15 minutes but we will drop back to 900 and stay there. Turn it back on, back to 2megs.
Just for grins I tried turning on the 4G to test my results.
I'm not rooted and running 2.2
3G alone = 1296kbit/s
4G on (no 4G service) = 1102kbit/s
So, it didn't do anything for me.
As I said, this is for SLOW 3G speeds, meaning >600kbps - with those speeds, you're probably not being affected by any sort of a bug. I had never seen 1Mbps much less 2 on this phone until that fix.
I still doubt the PRI has much of an effect, but perhaps there is hope that you can go back to 1.40 soon and find out.

i know with my droidx, i got fabulous cell reception and signal. Motorola is known for it. when i had my samsung with the same provider, i had crappy signal..
what do you think? good cell signal?
Mine is fantastic. One dropped call, and I was in a tunnel.
-95 dBm instead of -110 on my HTC Hero (I live in a terrible signal area)
For me the signal is terrible when go to my office. Most of time no signal.
I'd changed from telco companies and all they worked perfectly I got no complains about it.
Sent from my MB860 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I've noticed a small increase in reception from my iPhone 3G, but not that much of a difference. In some of my classrooms, I used to get no signal on my iPhone, but I get one to two bars on my Atrix. I haven't been reverted to EDGE yet, though, so I'm not complaining.
Works fine for me
Works well for me. Got crappy reception in my office, but that has been consistent between phones, so no biggie.
No dropped calls and I lose signal in one building I rarely go into but it has a sheet metal roof and walls and no one gets reception in it.

I'm quite satisfied, I've been in a road trip with a guy whose phone was an iphone and our reception was the same or even better
I've been getting better signal on my Atrix then I got on my iPhone 4 especially in areas with weaker signal.
Im haven't had a single dropped call since I got my atrix compared to the lg expo I had previously. I must say that I've had such good reception I'm impressed!

Signal is great everywhere than my office building. I'm very happy with the call quality, which beats my nexus one's.

I am very impressed with the reception I get with this phone. I too live in a terrible area when it comes to cell coverage and this phone seems to be doing a better job than the past 4-5 devices I've used.
Most samsungs were close to unusable where I live.
At work I have a very poor signal indoors (-100 to no signal). With my BB 8900 if I walked out to the door I could make a voice call. However with my Atrix I kept dropping calls after 30 sec or so. I got a microcell to fix that problem.
I am having a reception issue. My Motorola Atrix shows 3 or 4 bars and suddenly drops to 1 or no service for a second and goes back up to 3 or 4 bars.
I live in NYC and never had this problem with my Samsung Captivate. Most of the time the phone does not even show the full 5 bars, mostly 3 or 4 and occasionally 5
My girlfriend and I both have Nexus S 4G's so I decided to update mine and leave hers at 2.3.4 until I ran some tests. Here is what I concluded after about an hour of testing at home:
Signal strength was improved by around 10db
3G download speeds were 60% faster
3G upload speeds were 40% faster
It's important to note that the Speedtest.net app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. To get accurate results, you should use the Speakeasy Speed Test through your phone's web browser, or, tether your computer to your phone and run any speed test from your computer.
I haven't had a chance to test 4G but I am anticipating a big improvement.
Marco
PS. Sorry for the crappy photos taken on my old Evo 4G
It's impossible to rate 3G speed performance increases based off a radio update accurately. Sprints 3G network is such a pile of crap you could get 1mb a second one minute
and this garbage the next.
I tested it a few times over an hour period and got the same results. Beyond that I don't have the time to waste running further tests.
Sorry to hear you get crappy speeds.
did you do any testing on wifi signal strength?
I was getting 2.6 mbps dl at home before update. 60% of that would be crazy. Im on miui atm and idk if im going to update if it blocks tether.

I didn't test Wifi and unfortunately I just updated her phone to 2.3.5!
Most importantly, how is the signal acquisition? One severe problem I faced is that signal is extremely patchy in areas that should not be patchy at all
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
i know it stuffed all sorts of baby unicorns into 4g speeds, previously id average 1.4 down and up.. now i get 2.6 down and 1.7 up
I installed the update via this forum and I have zero signal bars and my airave is 20 feet away if that. My wifi signal indicator jumps around from weak to strong but is mainly weak. I don't know what the deal is, I'm not trying to scare anyone. Its just annoying me.
Is there anyway I can remove this update? I've never done any kind of rooting on my nexus s 4G

Do you have the older airave that is only 1x data? If so, it's displaying the 3G bars when not using 1x (either sms or call). You'll never miss a call due to signal if that's the case. It used to be that way for me when I had the older unit (just got the newer 3G airave, and now it's full bars all of the time).

This sucks.
I'm running rooted 2.3.5 with Matrix 4.0 kernel.
Before update:
WIFI was 4.9 down 4.3 up
4G was 3.6 down 1.5 up
3G was 325 kps down 100 up
After Update:
WIFI is 7.2 down 1.5 up

3G is 550kps down 100 up
I ran each test a few times.

Why is that the case?
2.3.4
3G 300kbps-1000kbps depending on location
4G max 5.5Mbps
Wifi max 6Mbps
2.3.5
3G 500kbps-1200kbps depending on location
4G max 7.5Mbps (!!!)
Wifi max 8Mbps
It seems like to me that one person says it helps and then the next says it sucks so I think I'm just going to leave well enough for now because i have mine on Boost and really don't feel like setting up data and mms again...wouldn't be hard but from the looks of things it really doesn't look like its worth it.

I have a USB Data Card. u301. I have an antenna plugged in to it mounted on the roof and I get full service. Speeds at around 13.6 Down, 1.40 up. I plug the Epic in and with full service. Speeds at around 2.61 Down, 0.42 up. WTF? huh...

4G is an absolute dead end for anyone in New York (unless you're smack in the middle of the city). Here on the upper west side, 4G is far less reliable than 3G and when it does work offers no substantial speed increase.
Just ran a few speedtests from inside my apartment here in downtown Portland, OR
12006kbps down, 1486kbps up was the best.
Pretty beefy!

thats not entirely true. i live in brooklyn ny and i have great 4g. averages around 7-8mbps
I've tested 4g speeds all over Denver since it came here, and have seen a striking contrast in different areas that are only a few blocks apart.
Aurora seems to range from around 3 mb/1.5 mb on the high side to just under 1 mb/0.3 mb, but there are a lot of holes in coverage (and the in-and-out coverage areas at the edge of said holes, of course). Once in a while, I have seen dl speeds up to 5 mb, even 7 on two occasions, but that only lasted for a half hour at best... ul speeds have never exceeded 1.5 mb for any of my tests.
I have seen more consistent ~5 mb upload speeds in parts of southwest denver and surrounding areas (englewood, littleton, etc.), though upload still signed like it was capped at 1.5 mb. But even some of those areas have had dead zones and flaky signal.
I have had one intermittent problem that could be my phone or the network - once in a while, everything will appear as if my phone is connected just fine, but I can't reach the internet. Go back to 3g and I'm fine, but when I reconnect to 4g, whether immediately or after a few minutes, it still behaves like a local network with no internet... Anyone else have this problem in Denver?

Nah I live in the bronx and I get great 4g lol when I'm outside though. Myhouse is a lead box, apparently. I get 1 bar inside but it barely holds on to it.
There are a few dead spots though around the city. Like, BLATANT holes inthe coverage.
But other than that, I'm completely satisfied with 4g...I even get 1MB (yes byte) consistently when I'm chillen outside.
They could lower the ping though...1MB speed is still garbage when it takes a second for your command to go through.
I remember when I bought my epic downtown the first thing I did was turn 4g on and it connected...this was in october BEFORE 4g became official in the city lol I ike sprints commitment to nyc

I've noticed that the clear 4g network is going through a lot of throttling changes. I've noticed they have been keepin the phones below 8Mb most of the time and clear itself is using a bandwidth throttle that doesn't seem to have a clear reset period. Streaming video has brought my home modem and usb modem to a .67 Mb crawl for thelast few days. But when I'm not being throttled I see up to 14Mb down.one last note I have yet to see any bandwidth throttling on the phones 4g tho. Blemh I think I have to go back to comcast for home internet:-(

I've never really used 4G on my phone. It's only functional if I turn data off, then turn 4G on and stay stationary. If I'm driving it simply stops working. At least half the time it just connects, goes to sleep and stays that way until I toggle it off.
This plus the Overdrive I used to have is pretty much a fail sandwich.
Seattle/Lynnwood/Redmond areas primarily. SRF ROM, though it's pretty consistent across ROMs.
I use speedtest.net for my tests, both on my phone with the app and my tethered laptop via the website. I have tried all but a couple of the modems (I didn't bother with some of the leaks that came out almost back to back, because there was already a newer leak when I found time to flash). The results did vary slightly between modems, but not significantly enough for any one modem to stand out as the best or worst - some almost seemed to have good and bad times of day, and not necessarily the same times between modems (probably coincidence due to the random fluctuations in connection quality that I described in my previous post)

I agree completely with the above. In my apt on Upper East Side, 4g speeds are fine - but I get constant drops and terrible speeds (as in slower than 3g) on Upper West in my office. Have wifi at home so don't need 4G there, but would love to tether off 4G in my office. Sprint 4G sux

what does 995kB/s dl translate to? lol, it was insanely fast only a couple of times I tested it like 5 months back in san diego... I must have been the only guy that connected because now my 3g speeds tend to be on par with my 4g... and that was on 2.2...

Ok so I ran a few tests on the Upper West Side this morning and the results were mildly surprising.
On 4G, I maxed out at about 6.0 Mbps down and 0.65 up with pings in the 140 range.
3G, on the other hand, maxed out at 0.3 Mbps down about 0.5 Mbps up with pings of roughly 260.
So, we've basically got no difference between 3G and 4G upstream and glorified dial-up for 3G down.
I'll try some more later from a different location.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
so I had to do a bit of driving around Manhattan today and decided to test 3G and 4G speeds in several areas. the short version of what I found: my neighborhood has the absolute worst 3G and 4G of any of the other neighborhoods I drove through. most of the Upper West Side south of me boasted around 4.6 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. 3G was roughly 1.0 Mbps down and 0.85 up. In midtown, 4G was roughly 3.3 down a 1.0 Mbps up.
Compare that with my neighborhood where 3G doesn't crack 0.3 Mbps down and actually has faster upstream. I called Sprint and they claimed there is a "tower down" relatively close to me, and after some pressing, gave me a $25 credit for the down time.
So I've had the phone for 2 weeks now, and I finally activated it yesterday. To my dismay, I am not getting reception in the common areas of my house. I'm on T-Mobile and their coverage map says that I should be getting "Good" reception in my area. But it seems like the reception just goes in and out. If I am using my phone in my hands while sitting on the couch in my living room, I get no reception. However I left the phone sitting on the couch and went to get a drink, and when I came back I had received 2 texts. Wtf?
The same thing happens in my room. When I'm leaning against the stairs to my loft bed, I get no bars. However, if I move literally 6 inches to the left, I get 3 bars to full reception. What's the deal?
And when I say I get no reception, the phone is showing a "hollow" triangle, like with black as it's background. Is that normal? On my old phone that ran ICS (CM9), when I had no bars, it would show a gray triangle with a little X in it. I was getting this hollow triangle when I had no SIM card in it, so I thought it was odd that it shows the same thing when I have no reception.
Any ideas anyone?
I've noticed that the reception on this device can take a nosedive when it is held. And yes, when you have no reception it is normal to show the hollow triangle.

I think I would have to agree with this. It's so weird. Like sitting in the same exact spot, I can go from full signal to no signal in a matter of seconds. It's really actually beginning to get in my nerves, and I'm wondering if I have a bad unit.

From past experience with TMo, 2 year subscriber from 2003-2005, and just signed up for the $30 Monthly plan, their coverage just plain sucks. I'm in a good coverage area according to their map too but I get 1 bar in my house, -109 dBm (measured with Network Signal Info) while my Verizon phone gets -60 dBm, and full bars. I took my phone outside and I had to walk half a block towards the main street before I got a decent signal, -90 dBm and was even up to 3g data speeds, no HSPA+. However, this is still an improvement from my previous experience with them as I used to have to take my phone a mile up to the Interstate to get a signal (I live in a medium sized city by the way mentioned in a TMo commercial). I'm looking at purchasing a signal booster but haven't decided if I want to go that route or just switch to StraightTalk running off AT&T's network and see if its any better.
I should also mention that at work, in a different town, inside my office I get crappy reception, 1-2 bars but if I go out into the hallway 5 feet away I get 4-5 bars. The signal strength fluctuates all the time so not sure what is going on, maybe a lot of interference from wireless devices.

Yeah I almost always get the gray signal bars. It seems like edge takes forever to kick in. When it finally does it's reasonably fast (at least compared to my old Virgin Mobile phone that averaged 10-15kbps on a good day) but it just takes absolutely forever.
But for example, right now I'm sitting in the dining room in my house. The signal bars are hollow. A couple of minutes ago, I went to the kitchen, set the phone down on the table, and when I came back, I had gotten a text message! I just can't comprehend this.

Yeah I'm on stock. I was planning on flashing ParanoidAndroid this weekend though, I'm REALLY hoping that improves things. This is just so frustrating.

I've noticed these issues in areas with low Tmo reception. One minute the phone will have 3 bars and the next it will be the hollow triangle. I don't have any of these issues at my house because I get a very strong edge signal.

I'm new to GSM. Is E or H better in the statusbar?

H is better. E means you're on edge (2g) which is slow. When you're on H you should be getting at least 3g speeds and sometimes much more.

Ugh. I've only seen H for a short time last night. I get E pretty much all the time. Just another reason to hate T-Mobile and this phone now.

I'm on AT&T, using a MEdia Net plan and have been getting weird connection drops on HSPA+. I haven't ever seen the phone go on EDGE, so I can't comment about 2G connections.
It's seems like the phone just drops a connection randomly and frequently. I can't even stream NPR anymore. On WiFi, the connection is flawless. I didn't have his issue a week ago, and I've flash many different ROMs since then. I not sure if this is a modem issue or an AT&T network issue. My account still shows that the N4 is recognized as a plain old dumb phone, so I don't think that they've restricted my access, but knowing AT&T, any annoyance is possible.

T-Mobile does suck when it comes to hspa coverage. They have soooooo much edge coverage. Unless you are in a city you're quite likely to be on edge.

My connection isn't great inside my house, but is LTE quality a hundred yards from my house. Still get better in house reception than the ATT iPhone 5 living here. If there are a lot of tall buildings around and you live in a solid structure your signal will suffer.

I used to have T-Mobile but switched to straight talk and don't have any issue. According to T-Mobile coverage map, I should have sorry voice coverage and excellent data coverage yet it was the other way around. I dried then the other day and love having a constant signal now! T-Mobile just sucked where I lived, AT&T/straight talk is awesome

I'm definitely getting worse reception on the Nexus 4 in my home than I did with my Nexus One. I have a weak signal at home, but the Nexus One was able to hold onto it. The Nexus 4 goes in and out. The Nexus 4 is also worse in other places that I regularly go, which have weak signal. I've missed quite a few calls, in the couple weeks I've had the phone. That pretty much never happened with the Nexus One.
