question about factory reset - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My nexus4 is on PA 3.99-RC2, and I want to upgrade it to the latest 4.2 beta1
Do I need to FACTORY RESET?
and where do I find the RECOVERY to update?
Thanks

No, just flash it dirty.
By the way, do not open these threads here
There are forums for that

You are wrong, he needs to factory reset once as he is on 4.3 based ROM with older version of bootloader and radio

Yes you have to Factory reset once and then wipe cache/dalvik
flash bootloader,radio then rom,gapps
supersu v.193 reboot
done
you need twrp for it goto wipe option there you will find the Factory reset option.
Henceforth make threads in specific sections. This thread should be in QnA section. Ask any mod to move it.
Thanks.

When I installed it, I installed it dirty and it went fine for me. I forgot just tell him he needs to install bootloader and radio.

When I switched from PA3.99 to the 4.4.2 nexus 5 port I went like this:
- Backup everything you need
- factory reset the phone and reboot, it should be 4.2 stock afterwards
- let the phone update OTA to 4.4.2
- once everything is done you should have a stock nexus 4 with 4.4.2 and no root access.
- now you can download your favorite 4.4.2 ROM, kernel, supersu and mods and put it on the phones internal storage.
- install from recovery as usual, reboot, let it settle, reboot, done.
Worked flawlessly for me. Of course you can do all this manually (flashing latest boot loader, radio etc via fastboot), too. There are lots of threads here explaining all about fastboot, unlocking the bootloader etc if you have any troubles.

[Q] Flashing gets stuck at Cyanogen boot screen, Still able to recover.

Hey folks. I'm trying to flash Cyanogenmod to my Nexus 7 running 4.2.1. I am rooted and unlocked. I downloaded the nightly 10.1 as well as the stable 10.0 along with Gapps. Flashing both with Clockworkmod recovery gets me stuck in a bootloop with both options, forcing me to restore to my backup.
This is my first time flashing a rom on this device, but I didn't wipe it or anything. Just flashed from my current setup. I'm wondering if I should restore to factory on my current first? Am I missing any steps in this process? I'd like to be able to just tap and install if possible. I had bad experiences with flashing when I had my Galaxy Captivate.
I appreciate any help with this. I have gone through several forums and threads, but none seem to be device or situation specific so I thought I would bring up this specific situation. Thanks for any help.

You left out the "how you flashed" part. If you were using something such as ROM Manager, it may have wiped for you. But typically, for manual flashing from the recovery you need to do a "factory reset" procedure prior to installing a new rom. (A wipe which erases everything in /data except what is /data/media)
I've used a CM10.1 nightly and sequentially flashing the gapps, no troubles. Perhaps different versions though, the devil is always in the details.
I flashed using Clockwork Recovery, both manually and from the app itself. Neither provided a solution.

I'd also like to point out that I'm confused about why a factory reset would help this situation. If the new install is just writing over the boot, why should it matter?

It doesn't just write over the boot.
/data is where all your downloaded apps, settings, and databases are...
Do a factory reset in cwm and cm will boot. It's that simple

I would wipe cache/dalvik cache and format system in mounts and storage, and flash the PA rom and the latest PA google apps.
Go Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020336
Then download the latest PA rom here:
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/mako/pa_mako-3.00-15FEB2013-223348.zip
After that download the GAPPS:
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/gapps/pa_gapps-full-4.2-20130209.zip
Next, you download the bootloader and baseband for 4.2.2 here
http://www.mediafire.com/?xvdybg0o4pkhfse
After you have finished downloading everything, save whatever you need on your phone on your computer/cloud storage or whatever saving method you use and put all of the above files into your phone. Boot into recovery and start wiping. Wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. wipe system, and factory reset. Once you're done wiping, go to the files and flash them all one by one until you're finished. Finally, reboot and you're finished.

Nope. You have to manually install them yourself. Last time I checked..we had to do it ourselves.

4.4.1? why are you flashing incredibly old nightlies?
Also it sounds like you flashed from a very old CWM build which likely didn't set selinux contexts properly. The included Omni kernel has a recent TWRP, reflash omni and wipe using that.

Flash this file in recovery:
http://ge.tt/7mJqhvw/v/0?c
Then, reboot to recovery again and perform a full wipe (factory reset/data wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe system, wipe preload). You'll find those options in various places there, so dig around. Once that is done you can flash OmniROM and Gapps
and @zachdees - you most probably didn't do a full wipe, so do those steps above and it will work for you too
can you send the omni rom file

Upgrading N4 to Lollipop without losing data
Personally I skipped the Unroot part and upgraded fine. The rest was as you described.
Although it sure needs much time and some reboots to complete the process.
If anyone wants to keep his data and just upgrade to Lollipop, should flash stock img files in this order: radio, bootloader, boot and system.
I am using Win 8.1 btw.
I saw this in the Wugs tool kit thread.
I really don't want to have to do a full back up and restore of everything. I am very much a root nOOb and probably would have not
rooted without the tool kit.
Can someone please type very slowly for this nOOb and tell me how, using the Wugs kit to do the above, ie; Flash the stock img files
in the order listed above?
Much thanks in advance,

What i did for my kitkat update was
1. Keep a nandroid backup of the phone through recovery & backup of all the data
2. Because you unlocked the bootloader you are not gonna lose any data
3. connect your device to computer and check whether it is connected using the command 'adb devices'
4. If it shows you some device is connected a serial number you are good to go
5. use the option flash stock + unroot and follow the onscreen instructions
6. Then root your device using the root option and flash a custom recovery! It by default gives the first option to flash CWM but if you want to switch to other recoveries then you can use the apps like 'flashify' after you turn on your phone
I will probably try to flash android 5.0 today because my exams getting over so i will keep you updated with the procedure if i'm able to do it
I used the toolkit to flash 5.0, HOWEVER, when you flash the images, YOU WILL BOOTLOOP. To fix this, you need to reboot into the Bootloader (Vol Down + Power), select Recovery. then press Pwr + Vol Up, and Factory wipe your device. When you reboot, it will take a bit of time, but it will reboot. Perhaps @WugFresh could add a script to factory wipe for the N4 after a flash, as more than a few have bootlooped their devices and freaked out not realizing the simple fix?

Way ahead of you there is a new feature in v1.9.8. Check the toolkits options menu. The feature is called "Post-Flash Factory Reset". Enable that to have NRT auto boot you into stock recovery post flash and instruct the user how to factory reset.

Yes. However, in stock recovery you could try just "wipe cache" instead of "factory reset". Then you won't loose data, but it might not work. Worth a shot though.

You are da man! Awesome. I just updated to 1.9.8 last night, and had not had a chance to play around with it. Is there a note, or is it on by default for the N4 so users realize this? I did not run into this issue with my Gen 1 or Gen 2 N7's upgrading, so do not think it was necessary for them, but for the N4 it seems to be.
Saw your comment about just wiping cache, and would be interested to know if that works. Might give it a try, to test as that is certainly preferable to a Factory Reset.

I did not default it, or make a note for it. I really don't like hardcoding these exceptions, especially when I don't know if google will fix it in the next version. That said, I think a note might be a good idea if this is happening all the time on N4. I will put one in (conditionally for this build) in v1.9.9.
Yes, please test that if you get a chance.

@WugFresh I tested tonight, you were right. A factory reset is not necessary, just wiping the cache partition after flashing does the trick and will take it out of bootloop.
Flashing 5.0 using Flash + Stock option
I just did flash my stock 5.0 image! A very easy to use interface by wugfresh! Simple with onscreen instructions! Read and follow them......probably wont end up messing with your device!
Backup of all your files is recommended!
A backup is necessary because in my case when i flashed the image is when it wiped the entire Internal Storage! I did not enter a bootloop or any other issues!
Though to avoid any issues I did a factory reset and Cache wipe! Becasue anyways my DATA was wiped completely!
Thought to share this.......great for newbies who wanna flash stock and root it easily!
Nexus 4 unbricking
i had problems with my nexus system since cm11 snapshot 10 (self rebooting etc.) so i decide to ultimate format all my data by doing that:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Mount and storage>Format/system
Mount and storage>Format/data
Mount and storage>Format cache
Mount and storage>Format sdcard
Advenced>Wipe dalvik cache
So i have a problem because i cant turn my device into usb debugging mode.
I would like to know if I can save my phone ?
fastboot mode on
lock state - unlocked
in recovery\advanced\restart bootloader it says "root access is missing. root device ?" so i choose yes
(sorry for my english)

Do a factory reset.
Should reset your phone to stock condition.

Seems like if you have a custom rom, you used a custom recovery to flash it, and if you can still get into TWRP (or whatever recovery you used) you can go to the "wipe" mode and do a factory wipe/reset.
