Since getting my m5000 last Friday i've been considering the various uses it could have - from both a personal and business point of view.
Today I installed the VNC viewer software on the m5000 and it lets me remotely control my office desktop computer - plus all of our other workstations (I'm the IT Manager - we use it for remote support).
I'm giving some serious thought to the possibility of not having a desktop PC - instead using my m5000 to it's full capability just using vnc to access a spare computer in the office with all the apps on it i use. this would also work when i'm not in the office.
any views on this? i just thought that with the m5000 practically being a laptop it makes sense to possibly use it instead of a desktop pc.
i think the concept is more of an addition to a desktop, not a replacement.
its a very useful utility to read information, but when it comes to maniputlating data, ie, editing a huge spreadsheet its not really up to the spec of office on a desktop.
maybe 5years down the line when the software has been developed enough, the hardware is smaller and of higher specs.
but for now, i see it as a portable part of my main systems, and pound for pound the pc is still a way more viable option.
Hello im new to android i have a advent vega but will love it to have some sort of windows on it if anyone has any ideas or if this is possible please post thanks
Apparently the next version of Windows will be able to run on ARM processors such as the Tegra 2 in the Vega. I doubt it'll end up on the Vega, though someone might port it over.

If we do get windows on vega, would be able to install windows software such as skype, msn etc i probaly guess so but please correct if im wrong
I would be very surprised if windows will ever come to our vegas. Memory i would say is the main issue, xp would be the only one able to run with 512mb of ram, and that has poor touch screen support. I am running windows 7 with 1gb of ram (min system req) on my laptop, and it runs very slow. As far as i am aware even the netbook version needs 1gb. Be happy with android.
I wasn't really talking about windows 7 (although i would like that) but windows CE or windows mobile.
PS . As I said I only want it for the software.

Won't ever happen, windosws mobile is all closed source. Android is much better anyway, just get used to it
Agreed, winmob on the vega prob wont occour.
I too, miss some great apps and games which doubtfully will ever appear on andriod. The android gaming community, seems a little shallower than the wince lot.
I stll keep my htc touch and diamnd 2 specifically because of this.

i think if we can get android 3.0 (or whatever the numbers will be) on our vega's, its more then enough to have enough fun with it, an operating system that does not thing its a smartphone and optimized for tablets. i used many android smartphones before, but using even 2.2 on vega is more fun then any smartphone i think, at least you can read web sites and not harm your eyes
PS : i have a joojoo tablet too, which runs win7 and i think android is better and faster on a tablet like vega ( tegra2 tabets).
Some of the cheap import tablets like the Zenithink ZT-180 have roms for WinCE - but from what I have read nobody really uses them since even WinCE is pretty poor as a tablet OS (well, that and the ZT-180 is pretty rubbish!).
as a student you can get the windows embedded 7 development kit for free, that should be able to run on the advent vega but my knowledge isnt yet sufficient to build and deploy a rom in order t test it
I honestly don't understand this kind of question:
You have Windows a system built for PCs and to be operated specific using keyboard and mouse.
And then you have Android a system built for mobile devices to be operated specific with a touch screen.
I guess the question is not IF it's possible, but WHY in a hell would anyone even bother porting it?
Do you miss msn and skype? I got news for you, just download Skype and eBuddy from the market. Solved!

What about office tools? i have yet to find a decent word processor that retains all (or most) of word's features.
sadly, while gdocs looks lovely, writing documents is still a pain..
Although I also wish that I could do some serious work on my tablet / smartphone, you simply can not do it (too small screen => primarily wasn't meant for this kind of job, but it's great in mobility and therefore "valuable information on the go").
Tablets & smartphones are used to consume / present information and PCs / workstations are used to generate that information.
I have also tried all kind of Office software (QuickOffice HD, Polaris Office, Docs To Go, GDocs,...), but reality is that generating information on Android is 30-50% slower than on a 20" monitor with keyboard & mouse hooked on a PC.
Yes, you could make a new office software on Android that would need a keyboard, mouse & external monitor, but that would defeat the purpose of mobility.
And sadly there is no such good software on Android with so many funtionalities that are found in Microsoft Office.
IMHO you can do up to 30 minutes of work without problems, for anything above that, please do yourself a favor and use a PC.

Yani, its a good app, have you tried? I will use this all the time when I use my Vega during work. I find the windows apps quite poor on Android (I uses docs to go). This is great for reading and creating basic files. There are a few problems I have found so far.
1. The UI is not really designed for touch screen, I used with my docking station, keyboard and mouse but still was hard to click on the right part due to the alignment being off slightly on the mouse pointer.
2. Docs saved to the virtual desktop can be downloaded from a site called files.onlive.com. However when you try to access this site it says 'only available in USA'. So might be a nightmare to get off what you have created.
What do you think?

Sorry, but I haven't used this myself.
If you read my signature, I'm still on stock Froyo and this app needs at least Gingerbread.
I've read only good things about this.
I use QuickOffice for documents, but I only view documents, and these android office apps aren't even good at that!
But I've tried OnLive (for gaming) on SGS and it's amazing!!!!111one
Now to get some answers for your questions:
1. I think you need to restart your OnLive desktop in order to fully accept your mouse&keyboard input.
2. I went to https://desktop.onlive.com/account/myfiles and uploaded a doc file and then redownloaded it without a problem. I'm from Slovenia - EU and I've used Firefox on a PC with Ubuntu/Linux OS.

Dear Friends,
When I shopped around for a tablet, the last thing that came to my mind was a tablet with OS Windows, however after using android tablet, I feel a tablet with windows is much better as we have software to go with it. I am a trader, I need multi profile sharing, video support, document editors, pdf to word convertors and other related apps to be mobile friendly. Can I install windows 7 on my Acer A500 which is currently running android?
How do I install it? Tablet don't have CD drive.
Where to download win 7 for tablet
Drivers for the tablet
please help
Cheers
I'll give you an advice. Sell your tablet and pack your bags. You are not cut out for installing even a custom rom.
Windows runs so far only on x64-x86 CPUs which are a totally different architecture from ARM.
Apps are incompatible among these two architectures. Windows 8 will run on ARM(yes iconia and all other tablets are ARM) but no previous apps will work unless built from scratch, on Windows 8 ARM edition.
y dont you sell your a500 and buy a w500? should be the easiest way
If you need Window$ (and I completely understand why you might) take a look at the existing windows tablets. Fujitsu just came out with a new slate form tablet that might fit your needs.
XDA is the wrong place to be.

Sorry, I am just an end user not developer. I got no time for understanding software archetecture. As a user the equipment and sofware must support my needs. I can't connect to a Ad hoc connection, I cannot have multi profiles, equipment has 2 cameras but I cant use msn or yahoo to video call, the usb drive is just a socket for thumb drive. I can't get a mobile tethering via USB. Ms office cannot be installed, FAX applications don't work, not all bluetooth printers work. What more .... we spend money to make our business easy not end up installing ROM. Tabkets are ment to be laptop replacements and business friendly.
cool the fujitsu tablet looks real cool. I need to see if I can get a trade in with a top up on this iconia. I also saw the HP slate looks good as well.
Acer Windows Version
The Acer comes with windows 7 also.

There's your problem!
Tablets are not supposed to be laptop replacements. They are a different class of device entirely.
For some people, it is possible that a tablet can effectively replace a laptop, but it very much depends how you actually use a laptop in the first place. If you use your laptop for email, internet, and maybe some light games, then yes a tablet can replace it. Otherwise, a tablet is likely to be a companion device to another computer (e.g. a desktop or laptop).
In addition, "business friendly" doesn't mean suitable for all business applications. It just means, in my experience at least, that the device can be used for certain business functions, e.g. exchange support, VPN, remote desktop, Citrix etc.
Regards,
Dave

You can't install win7, you will need to purchase a new one. If you want to stick with Acer they have a w500 (w for windows, like a500 is a for android). But there a number of other windows tablets out there. But if you are needing heavy windows use and portability, might I recommend a netbook

1. What true business person has to resort to ad-hoc networks? Did you not realize the A500 is wifi only and doesn't have a 3G feature?
2. Why would you need multiple profiles? Are you sharing the tablet with others? A tablet is pretty much considered to be a one-person device like a phone.
3. There are multi-platform video conferencing apps that work. Of course Microsoft and Yahoo apps might not -- this is a Google device. Microsoft apps don't typically function on Apple devices either.
4. So far I use my USB port for card readers, thumbdrives, connecting my digital camera, keyboard, and mouse. This functionality will improve even more with the v3.1 update released within weeks.
5. There are 1/2 dozen Office compatible app suites available for Android. I don't think you would want to install a full version of Office on a mobile device with limited memory/storage.
6. There are plenty of modern and secure alternatives to the 1980's technology of faxing. That being said, there are numerous internet based FAX services that work perfectly with the A500.
7. Printers require drivers, and those come from the printer manufacturer. If they do not produce drivers for Android then you cannot print directly to those printers. However, there are apps that can satisfy your printing requirements. Again, paper and printed documents are becoming a thing of the past. Most industries have moved to digital.
My advice to you is to have your company's IT department set up some sort of RAS/Citrix type system that allows you to use your tablet (whether Android, Windows, or Apple) to connect to a full Windows computer over the internet and run all your standard Windows business apps and functions from there. Otherwise, a tablet (any/all tablets) just simply is not the device for you.

Not just probably: Win8 will ship in x86-64 and ARM-compatible versions. However, that still won't help OP much since it still cannot run x86 applications. OP would still have to wait for all his applications to be ported over to Silverlight and/or ARM versions.
As to the OP himself: you bought a tablet device in order to do business with it, meaning your income is atleast partially dependent on it, yet you didn't bother to do any kind of research on if it will evenbe suitable to such? Tough luck but you brought this on yourself. And as for running Win7 on a tablet device without a physical keyboard and mouse: forget it. It works, but only barely. Get a laptop.

Same here. I very rarely leave it at home, it's just such a great device and makes it easy to ogle at pictures of Johnny Depp :3
Windows RT[WP8 in disguise] wont succeed
Microsoft remove the desktop from it intentionally
so it wont compete the PC market and Intel ofc
so what we getting is just Windows Phone 8 OS Like
ARM is strong enuf to replace PC
many interests to keep ARM in this state
i hate close code always block the future
Microsoft thinks we are wanting her "marketing" os
no, we want windows!
Microsoft is moving towards a more power friendly and more manageable application model in WinRT (the framework). Of course they don't want their tablets to run non-power-optimized code and therefore only support Metro-Style-Applications.
Given that even newest Quad-Core-ARM chips only compete in computational power with Intel's slow Atom CPUs I highly doubt that most of the interesting Desktop applications would work properly.
So even if I'm doubtful if Windows RT will succeed in the tablet market (depends on which devices will be there and how quickly developers create good Metro Apps) I don't think that it will fail because they almost removed the Desktop.
i mean there no reason to choose windows RT before android or iOS
cos Windows RT is Stripped version of Windows 8
and doesn't give us something more then WP7
what the point if there keyboard and mouse for tablet with windows RT

Office perhaps? Which is actually onboard with every Windows RT device.
Also nothing technically speaks against mouse/pen optimized Apps on basis of Metro Apps (Image editing, etc. - the mouse is simply more exact than a finger).
Aside from that a keyboard makes quite a lot of sense whenever you're typing a longer text (E-Mail, forum post, etc.)
As for a topic title: "Windows RT won't succeed" would be the closest to the current.

In Windows RT on ARM tablets will be a complete Office 2013 with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote.
They are not built as a Metro Style App (fullscreen metro app)! They are just the same as on x86 and are running in desktop mode. So every Windows RT tablet will have the same office experience as a tablet or notebook running Windows 8 (Pro).

however its looking good
i think metro will cap generally the OS potential
like IE10 metro version, have very little options .....
I guess it's far less Metro-Design that limits the options and functionality than the fact that those applications have been in development for far less time than their Desktop counter parts.
You won't see the control density you have on the Desktop now, simply because hit boxes would be too small which would make the apps fail certification for the Marketplace but aside from that I see pretty little functionality you could not create using WinRT as the basis.
I'm still really curious how many apps and what apps will be available when Windows 8 and Windows RT finally launch.
RT will certainly be interesting - Microsoft blocking non appstore applications could make it a somewhat limited device.
Still, may be a huge success. Only time will tell

but doesnt it support different "app stores"
so for example, an ideal setup would be to have your own company hub, which contains all needed local tools, these can be push updated and centrally managed across all win 8 sites,
So if thats possible i dont see why we couldnt do the same, much like we have custom app stores for Windows phone. unless is some kind of server side domain add on...that would suck!
as you say, time will tell but if it is locked down and the security is similar to Windows Phone 7, then its going to be a pain in the arse to crack open, say what you want about WP but its tighter than a ducks arse! were it not for OEM cockups we'd have no development at all!
These questions are regarding my Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4305 I just purchased a few days ago and absolutely love both the laptop and windows 8. I have a few questions and greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide me. I have searched to the best of my abilities and have found all other answers I needed these are what I could not find answers to.
1. Any time that I try to install Microsoft Office I am unsuccessful. I have tried both the trial for Office 365 premium and purchasing the monthly subscription for 9.99. I have an .exe file to install but when I run the program I get a UAC prompt asking me to allow the program to run. I hit yes it disappears and nothing happens. I have tried both 32bit and 64bit versions and I have tried right clicking and run as admin. I have been able to install 7-zip and chrome both of which were .exe files as well.
2. Sometime the mouse behaves weird. I am referring to the touchpad not an actual mouse itis kind of twitchy almost as though someone has connected remotely to the computer and we are both trying to control it at once but this is not the case and it is only occassionally not all the time.
3. What are the limitations to running an app in metro rather than desktop mode for example Chrome I can either run in desktop mode or relaunch in metro what if any limitations do either mode have?
4. Is there a way to get touchpad multitouch gestures similar to a Macbook such as two finger swipe to go back or forward in web browsers or four finger swipe down to open the app switcher? Pinch to zoom using either the touch screen or touchpad would also be convenient.
Thank you all so much for your time reading this I know it is a little detailed.
XDA has always saved me in the past I have no doubt you all will come through once again.
Thank you once more for good measure
The only one of those that's really about Win8 is the Metro vs. Desktop question... The truth is, unless an app is sideloaded or installed from the store, it's not really Metro. Software (including Chrome) can look and feel like Metro, but that's not the same. As for the tradeoffs, Metro apps update through the store (they can't update themselves), run in an extremely restrictive sandbox (can't even read most of the filesystem), have extremely limited multitasking (they can be snapped to the side of the screen, and if expressly written to can run in the background, but that's pretty much it), can sync state across Windows machines with the same account (without using their own syncing code), use the Settings charm for controlling options and permissions, and respond to gestures.
1: No idea what the problem is. Watch Task Manager as you begin the install; check what happens after consent.exe (the UAC prompt) goes away. Also, obviously, reboot (if you haven't already) and also make sure your Windows is up to date.
2: Hardware or driver (hardware-sepcific) problem. I can't help you, ask the manufacturer.
3: Answered above.
4: Yes, use a decent touchpad and/or driver for it. My 4 year old HP laptop supports multi-touch even in Win7.

1. Check add/remove as Toshiba may have installed a "trial" version or Starter edition. You should remove any previous versions of office installed by Toshiba, doubtful they are full and sounds like you have your own you prefer.
2. Try updated drivers, I've found the Toshiba touchpad to be very finicky and harder to control vs other's though. I have used it on Portege R930 and Z930 and I can't say I really like the experience compared with other's like HP or Dell.
4. Try the utility for the touchpad.
