I am relatively new to advanced android development / rooting. I rooted my Nexus4 recently without doing an SMS specific backup with a backup app. However, I had done a full backup using adb and I have the backup file as backup.ab. Is there any chance that I can restore all my previous sms and call history from this file to my phone now? I am running the latest stable cyanogenmod 11 installed via the installer. Appreciate help in restoring my text messages.

Do the restore not work when you move to an earlier android version.i recently loaded up super D.my backups were made in Froyo by Laszlo.I usually restore my sms and call logs via Titanium but in this case it did not work, also tried it on Super E and still the same result.so is it that the backups dont work if u move to an earlier build of android?
Got my Nexus 4 at the weekend and I've rooted it and I'm running Paranoid Android. I'm trying to figure out how best to create a back up solution that covers the following:
1, Backup a full "snapshot" of the whole phone as it is right now. The rom, apps, logins, wallpaper, icons, nova settings, etc.
2, Store that backup in Dropbox/Box/Drive.
3, Have an option to restore that "Snapshot" to the phone.
4, Have an option to just restore the apps/logins/nova settings, etc. Eg, I download a new rom to try.
I can't quite figure out if I'm best served using one of CWM, Titanium Back Up, Rom Manager or Nandroid or a mixture of more than one them to achieve the solution above.

What I run at least once a week:
- Titanium backup for apps and their data
- Super Backup for SMS, Contacts, Call Logs
- TWRP to take full backup image
(also System/Settings for backup/automatic restore are set to on)
And once/twice per month I copy everything under /sdcard out from phone. Titanium backup, super backup and TWRP all are making backups under /sdcard and you can also get your photos/videos etc.).
With Titanium backup you can do your step number 4. and with TWRP you can do 1. and 3. and for step 2. you will need ES file explorer or some other client which supports your backup site.
I use Helium. It's great
When I try to restore my sms messages with titanium backup all the conversation threads re appear but none of the messages are there. I backed up and tried to restore my sms on touchwiz based 4.4.2 roms. I've read around a bit and it seems like titanium backup isnt the best for restoring sms messages, I should have probably used a specific sms backup app. However, some people are saying restoring sms works with titanium backup on aosp roms so could I flash an aosp rom, resotre my sms with titanium backup, backup with a proper sms backup app, and then restore that new backup to my current rom ?
Is there any other way I can get my sms from the titanium backup ? Like can I convert it to a different backup type or something or open it and restore it with something else ?
Any help and advice will be appreciated, thanks.
Never mind I got it. I flashed an aosp rom, restored the sms trhough titanium backup, took a backup of that with sms backup and restore from the playstore, and restored the backup from that app on to my current touchwiz rom.
TLDR - rooted Samsung Galaxy S 2 android 2.3, I need apps' data backed up and restored on a non-rooted Samsung Galaxy S 5 android 4.4.2.
This is what I have tried so far:
I have Titanium on the older android, so its easy enough to back up everything that I want,
but since Titanium demands root and I have no desire to root my newer android (because I actually want to keep the warranty for a change)
I can not unpack my backups using Titanium on the newer device.
So I googled a little and found a great backup app called Helium (previously carbon) that can restore backups WITH DATA
on non-rooted devices with android 4 and higher. Looked perfect at first,
only catch is that it can only be installed on android 4 and higher, so it is useless for me for creating the backups on the first place on the older device.
Then I thought of combining Titanium and Helium this way:
I needed something that could restore Titanium backups (meaning having root)
and also being able to create Helium backups (meaning being android 4 and higher), so for this purpose
I added a new Android VM to my genymotion on my PC, it was a rooted android 4.4.
Then I successfully installed Helium on that VM, but when I tried to launch it I got the following popup message:
"Unfortunately, Helium has stopped."
Thought it was a bad rom, so I tried on newly created 4.3 and 4.1 but still got the same results.
Then I thought, these are my options:
1. Try a different android VM environment, maybe genymotion is too much under-developed for Helium (for example Helium needs usb communication to a 3rd party machine running a desktop application - I don't know if genymotion supports that virtual usb connection).
2. Try googling a different android backup app, that have both the Helium ability (restore backups WITH DATA on android 4 without root) and the Titanium ability (create backups on rooted android 2.3).
3. Research how to convert Titanium backup files to Helium format...
At this point, I felt like I have spent too much time and energy on this thing and for sure the solution exists and other people might know better then me.
So please, if you can help me, please do.
If your S2 is rooted, why not just flash to 4.1.2, restore from Titanium, and then create a backup with Helium? You can use Neat ROM.

Because some apps stop working properly or at all after I switch roms (worst case scenario I might attempt some sort of manual transfer of data)
I found a non-perfect solution which does not work very good so far (tried restoring a few apps, it failed installing them or the data restore did not restore any data)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.at.free
its not very good, but its the first one I have found which says it is able to restore data on non root and create backups on android 2.3.
I need something else.
Just give it a try on my phone running latest fw (android 10 one ui 2.1). Managed to have it up and running and working just fine EXCEPT call logs and sms / mms. It always says XML backup failed.
Is it something can be fixed or just the limitation of the app on android 10?
