SIM removed randomly / front camera issue - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello, I bought this device used and it worked just fine for at least 1 month, then this problem started, the message SIM removed appears randomly and i have to reboot and sometimes it even boots like with no SIM, I replaced the SIM module and it's still the same. The front camera also started failing randomly so I guess it's somehow related, thinking of a motherboard issue

Get it to repair in one official center :highfive:

First of all try a factory reset then check if problem persist then take your device to service centre because it's under warranty.

Galaxy S cant find sim card

Today i went to the gym, and when i was done and picked up my phone in the locker i needed to call someone. I called but it froze during the attempt to call so i turned the phone off (i could turn it off normally, so i didnt pull out the battery). When i turned it back on i had no signal at all, and went to mobile networks settings to check. I got the message that i had to insert my sim card to edit the settings.
My phone was running JM5 rooted. I tried switching sim card to see if my sim card somehow stopped working during those 2 hours but that didnt help either. I then tried reflashing (now have JM7 on it) and i still have the problem where it wont find my sim card.
Is there anything i can do besides send it to be repaired? I'd prefer not to do that seeing as i really hate waiting for it to come back.
You have probably tried it, but I'd get a cotton bud and clean the contacts both on the phone and the sim card. I've had that happen twice, but not on my SGS.
Yea tried that already.. thx for the suggestion though.
I guess i better hand it in to the repair shop.
I also have this issue with my SIM card, i go to flight mode and return back to normal mode seems to fix the issue ive also cleaned the contacts before and it didnt seem to occur again..

Yeah i have tried that, it's not working either. Tried several different Roms and different modem/radios too. This sucks.
I have the same problem. It started after I flashed JVK on my phone. I thought it was the firmwares fault, but I still have the same problem after flashing JS8. I think I'll be asking my provider for a new SIM. I have a feeling that the SIM might be the answer to our problem

Desire HD reboot problem

I was very happy yesterday when I picked up my brand new Desire HD. When I got home I immediately removed the plastic from the battery, inserted my sim card and plugged it in the charger while reading the manual.
After some tinkering around it suddenly rebooted. I thought it was just due to a setting I changed so didn't think much of it. However, it occurred another time later in the evening. This morning when I woke up, I didn't have any signal due to my DHD not recognizing my sim card any more. When I rebooted the phone, all was well. However when riding my train to work I felt the phone vibrate so I picked it up thinking I had a new text. Wrong: I was staring at the boot screen yet again.
When I got home this afternoon I did a factory reset using the phone's menu and hoped it would solve my problem. Unfortunately, when I opened the browser it rebooted again!
So, is my 2 day old DHD really dead-on-arrival or is there something else I could try? Unfortunately this was the last model left at the store where I got it from and they didn't know when another shipment would come in, so I might be stuck waiting for a while if I really do need to get it exchanged for a new one.
Mine is also doing this, also when I turned it off last night to charge it, it kept turning itself on. Any help much appreciated.

imo take it back if a laptop or anything else was doing this i would say there is a hardware fault bad chip sample or something its not normal you should have to live with it take it back asap
or wait if you want but personally you pay that much you want it to work just take it back
Maybe your SIM card is old and causing these reboots? DHD will automaticaly reboot when you unplug your SIM card without shutting it down first so maybe it's just loosing contact.
I've seen cases (various manufacturers) where SIM card would cause hangs, reboots and such. Replacement card from the operator in most cases fixed the issue.
My Nokia 6630 has that issue, it says the phone has to be reboot constantly due to a old scratched sim card, if i try with a new one it works perfectly :|
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676402
These reboot issues are a problem with the Desire, Nexus1, EVO4 and now it would appear the DesireHD. For the other phones the solution is to return to HTC for a mainboard replacement.
I really hope this isnt the case for the DesireHD.
As for it being my sim card: I doubt it as it works fine in my old phone (Nokia N900) and an old Motorola I still have. The sim card is barely 1 year old btw.

Yeah, I read about similar problems with the Desire and Nexus One but hoped the problems would have been solved in the DesireHD as I hadn't seen any messages of this problem occurring on the DHD before.
When I woke up about an hour ago, I again had to reboot my phone as it didn't see my sim card anymore. I'll go back to the store in about an hour to get a new one if they have it, and let you know when I get back...
This is just a wild guess, but may you should try to take out the sim card and place it back again. There could be a loose contact, dirt on the sim or some something else that might be causing a problem the phone does not see the sim correctly.

I thought of that last night so I took out the sim card as well as the battery and placed them back again. This morning, the DHD again failed to recognize my sim card so that problem wasn't solved.
The reboots seem to be rather random though, it's not just when I use my phone very heavily.
the issue with the sim card isnt the mainboatd issue, its can be sim or one of the back covers, wird.
Well, I went to the shop this morning to replace my DHD for a new one. The shop I got it from didn't have any in stock anymore, so I had the choice to wait until next week, or go to another shop and have it exchanged there. So I went there, and they replaced my (I think) faulty unit for a new one
So far, it's working like a dream What I noticed that with my previous DHD the charger would buzz very slightly when charging, this doesn't happen with my new unit and the same charger.
I'll keep you updated whether or not my new unit is indeed problem free.
I bought my Desire HD from the T-Mobile shop yesterday. Nice phone, but mine is rebooting every 5 minutes more or less. It seems to reboot soon after the 3g becomes active, but that may be just a coincidence. It also reboots immediatly upon plugging in the USB cable. Very annoying!. I thought I would try resetting to factory default, but that also did not help. I am going to swap it tomorrow, and hope I have better luck with that one.
Andrew
Same issue here, got mine from three UK yesterday.
Brand new SIM Card with the phone as well.
It was fine most of last night, rebooted once then after setup, like another post didnt think that much of it.
Then this morning it went in to a boot loop, rebooted about 5times in a row and the only thing to correct was a battery pull.
Lets hope its a software issue and not hardware related!
I haven't been able to test my new unit properly just yet. I ordered a new SIM card through T-MOBILE but it hasn't arrived yet. I'm now using my DHD without a SIM card and it has been working fine for the past 24 hours. So I think my SIM card is indeed the problem, as both units rebooted several times with the SIM card inserted but work fine without one.
When i picked up my sgs. It used to have same problem. Everytime i open a browser it reboots. But after i changed the rom it went perfect
Factory reset wont work. Try fresh install from the recovery menu. I think it will fix ur problem.
Most of the time this issue is software related.

Replaced my DHD at T-Mobile
Hi all,
So i was experiencing the reboot problem on my new phone. In fact mine was rebooting every 5 to 10 minutes since i took it out of the box. I phoned HTC to see if there was something I was doing wrong. They told me it's probably mainboard fault and I should return it.
Today I brought it back to the t-mobile shop and they exchanged it for a new one no questions asked. I demonstrated to the sales guy how it reboots for no reason, just to prove I wasn't crazy, but he didn't even ask for proof. The new one seems to be working flawlessly so far.
Here in Netherlands, you have 8 business days to return your device if something is wrong, and they will exchange it. If you wait too long, you would have to send it for repair under warranty. If you are having issues such as this, I would definitely swap it out a.s.a.p because when you buy an expensive phone like this, its meant to WORK!
I noticed something else perhaps worth mentioning. When the first phone package was opened, the plastic piece protecting the battery was not there, and the Micro SD was in the box, but not in the phone. The plastic cover was on the phone however, so I didn't think anything of these things because i don't know how the phones are packed. When I got the replacement phone, I tried to start it and it wouldnt start. Only then did I realize the replacement phone had a plastic protector around the battery which I first had to remove, and the micro sd was already in the phone. When i put my sim in the replacement phone, the fit was tighter as well. This all seems rather dubious to me. Perhaps someone had a play around with the first one before selling it? Maybe it was refurbished? In any case MAKE SURE you inspect the phone before leaving the shop, and make sure your phone hasn't been played with.
good luck everyone!
Andrew
Horrible reboot
Hi all,
I have been experiencing different reboots due to different reasons. Main reason is the fact of applying too much pressure on the back cover. That will always result in a reboot (I suspect it has to do with the two contacts under the cover).
Another reason for rebooting, as I have experiencing, is unplugging the charger while using the telephone.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are more reasons that cause the rebooting of the unit.
The worse part in my case is the fact that I lost the receipt, thus I believe I won't be able to take it back to have it fixed. Am I wrong?
I've been experiencing the same issues, but mine also turns itself on. I tried factory reset, didn't solve. So I am getting it exchanged as soon as its back in stock with Vodafone.

I am having exactly the same problem with my DHD. It's randomly rebooting 1 or 2 times a day. And when it's rebooted there is no signal and sometimes it doesn't even recognize my simcard at all. Manually rebooting the device then solves the problem for a while, untill it reboots automaticly again....
I have a dual simcard so today I will swap it, but I don't think that is going to work.
I don't have the DHD yet...
But i saw in a youtube movie that the batterycover had 2 contacts.
The guy in de video told that when you take the batterycover off when the phone is on it will shut down.
Maybe your battterycover is not set the good way.

[SOLVED] Contacts application taking 11 seconds to open

Posting this in case this helps someone with a similar problem in the future ...
I had a strange problem where the Contacts application took 11 seconds to open on my phone. Normally it is less than half a second. Trying to open the Settings menu option from within the contacts application took another 11 seconds before the menu appeared. Everything else on the phone worked perfectly.
I couldn't understand what had changed that would have caused this problem then I realised one difference was that I had changed to a new SIM card. I tried using 3 other SIM cards I use when I am travelling overseas and when these were in the phone the Contacts application opened within half a second as I would expect. When I put back my suspect SIM card the problem returned so I knew the problem was related to the SIM I was using.
To cut a long story short, the SIM card was registering ok on the network and the phone was operational but whenever the phone attempted to access the SIM (reading contact information etc), it took an exceptionally long time for the SIM to respond.
I tried another SIM from the same provider and this SIM card worked fine like all my other ones. So it seems that I had a partially defective SIM card that was causing the problem. I had no idea a SIM card could be faulty in this way. I have only heard of faulty SIM cards where they just don't work at all (ie the phone doesn't recognise it has a SIM installed).
My provider has given me a replacement SIM card now and now everything is OK again.
Nice story, but what is your question?

I would have thought that it was obvious, the OP has posted this in case someone else has the same problem, then they will know the reason.
Although it is a function of a forum to help anyone you can with a problem, it is also important to post the sucessful resolution of a problem, so that others with the same problem know the fix.
Okay, I thought he just forgot to ask a question.

[GUIDE/SOLVED] Invalid SIM Card Error

Hi guys, this morning I noticed that I couldn't make any call or send messages and I discovered that the "not inserted sim" icon was showing on the status bar. The problem was that my SIM card was inserted. I'm not sure but I do think that this is likely to be an HW related problem and I've also red that I'm not the only one who faced it. The only thing I can think of is that the SIM card is not making contact entirely with the motherboard and that's why it is not recognized. However, luckily, this issue is easily solvable. What I did was apply 2 layers of tape on the SIM itself and then I inserted it back into the phone (It was a little bit hard to push in but this is probably the only solution possible). Now I'm not getting any error anymore, I'll report back if something happens again.
Do not apply more than 3 layers of tape of the SIM tray won't come out easily or at all
This guide (yeah, not really a guide, just a suggestion ) is for the people who do not want to send the phone to HTC and wait for its replacement.
What type of tape is used and did you cut the excess off?

I used the classic office tape the transparent one and yes, I did first applied it to the SIM and then I cut it the same size around the corners
I had that issue so I pulled the Sim and cleaned up the contacts with an alcohol swab. The swab was black when I finished. I haven't had a problem since. I figured it was dirt but after reading this it may have just been loose.

Just one question guys, is your phone branded?
Yep AT&T branded.
I haven't gotten SIM errors often but it does happen every once in a while.
EDIT: And then it happened just a short while ago, lol.

EDIT:
@matt95
I added the two layers of clear tape and will see how this holds up. I have network connectivity so it was able to be inserted in properly.
Ok I don't think my theory is correct, in fact yesterday night the issue showed up again... However I did install the ARHD and i have no problem at all, could this be SW related?

It doesn't make sense to be sw related especially if the disconnect error appears. The tape idea has some logical sense to it. It tries to ensure the SIM keeps in contact with the phone.
It seems to be working fine for me. I've had it in place since the other day. Which ROM throws the error for you?

Galaxy S4 I9505, Front Camera Nightmare!

Hello, I bought this used Galaxy S4 I9505 recently. My thread is about the S4 camera. The problem is whenever I switch to front camera, the app freezes for a while and then the dialog "Camera Failed" pop up. And it won't work again even after I restarted the app. I have to do " Force Stop " & " clear data " from application manager so the app can start normally ( FOR THE BACK CAMERA OF COURSE ).
My issue in a few words: The back camera works perfectly but whenever I switch to front camera, the app freezes and then says "Camera failed". I have to do "Clear data" to make the back camera work again.
-- For hardware, I changed both ( rear & front ) camera. And they were 100% original that were removed from another device.
I tried every damn thing like "wipe data/factory reset" or "wipe cache". And changed the firmware many times. Still the same problem.
Also I know a friend who has the same problem on Galaxy Note 2 N7100!
And another friend who has the same damn thing on Galaxy Note 3 N9005!!
My experience made me sure that this is a hardware problem and cannot be fixed without changing the main board. But that did not prevent me from posting this thread so I can hear any advice from you guys here in XDA.
Thank you.
I'm suffering the same issue + randomly getting SIM removed message so I guess it's a mainboard issue sadly ?

Are you sure your sim is in good condition? + See if the sim connectors are 100% fine ( those small golden ledges where you plug in the sim card )
And you should try using another sim card if you haven't done so.
thanks,,
