battery drain/slow charge after root - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my nexus 10 uisng the method here. instead of using mrskip's took kit i used Wugfresh's as it has 4.4.2. I was able to root just fine. Included in the root package is Busybox (I think that is what it is called) and Superuser. Now I seem to have an issue with the battery.
Prior to root I installed Advanced Task Killer, Lookout, and Weatherbug. These three I want to run in the background all the time. Also prior to root I installed a few games (angry birds). I will be honest and tell you I did not use the Nexus a lot becuase I planning on rooting it.
After root I re-installe the Advanced Taks Killer, Lookout, and Weatherbug along with a number of other apps and games. Now I have using the nexus and the battery is draining very quckly and not charging well at all. So far it has dropped to 0 once while using it. It went from 40% to 0 in about 45 minutes. I was playing a game. Acording the Advanced Task Killer, and the button you double next to the home button (don't know name) to bring up running apps, nothinng else was running. Last night it was at 95%. I used if for about 1.5hrs and it dropped to 50%. I had it charging using the usb while I was on it for about 1 of those hours.
In an effort to conser battery power in general, I have the brightness set to auto, the screen turns off after a minute, I routinally kill open/running apps. I have the taks killer to kill apps on a regular schedule. I have the play store set to NOT auto-update.
1) Now that the Nexus is rooted, is there a way to adjust how background options work to minimize battery drain?
2) Is there options in Superuser or Busybox to adjust the native apps to make them NOT run in the background?
3) I do not mind it taking a few seconds (or 30) for an app to start up, how can I make sure some apps do not run unless I open them (youtube, play store, etc)

First I would drop the task killer as time and time again these prove to be a detriment on performance and battery life. If you must have one than use watchdog, but don't set it to auto kill anything
But you are probably better off using something like greenify now that you are rooted. Oh and the other two you mentioned, wheatherbug and lookout, these will more than likely drain your battery too, its up to you if you need them but personally I feel they will waste battery more than help

What is greenify? Perhaps I am misreading your post, but why is it better now that I am rooted?
Are there better apps for weather than weatherbug that do not eat battery?

Personally I use Google now for whether and greenify is an app

Android System using 55% of battery?

I had a Evo before and the Android System used maybe 15% of the battery (as seen in the battery stats section of the settings.) Now I have an Evo with far worse battery life, and it says that 55% of the juice is being used by Android System? Anyone know why, or how to fix it? These are essentially stock Evos, no rooting or such. Thanks.

Mine says 30% right now but that's with me playing on it for a while tonight. Try a battery pull, or reset it.

Click on it and see how many apps "android system" contains. Also if you havent made any phone calls or used 3rd party apps to much "android system" will occupy most of the battery.
Ok, did some research and found that people have been having issues with version 1 of the HTCfacebook app keeping the phone awake all the time and killing the battery. Seems.it.can not he deleted on non-rooted phones, but I did force close it and the drain on the battery seems to have slowed, and the system is down to 30% battery usage. now, does anyone know how I might delete this app without root? (this is the app which comes preinstalled and runs all the time in the background, not the one downloaded from the market.)

Did you make sure it's not set for auto sync using the HTCfacebook app?
You should be able to update it to the newer version that fixed that issue. No need to delete.
How does one update the preinstalled version? Thx.

I re-read one of your posts and noticed that its the htc facebook that's giving you the problem.
You should be able to download facebook for android (ver. 1.3.2 I believe) on the market and that should become your default facebook app and solve your issue.
Thanks lovethyEVO, I have done that but the default app keeps running in the background
Wonder if you went to settings, applications, and found the bad fb. App. Then hit clear defaults. Now set the upgraded version as default. Idk. It might work
Was going to suggest an autostarts type of app, since you can't uninstall it unless your rooted, but it looks like you have to be rooted on autostarts also. You can maybe try to find one that doesn't need root, or an autokill type of app. You can't uninstall it, but maybe you can keep it under control.

Thanks all. Well, I spent about 2 hours rooting from 2.2 today, and now I am running Fresh, which seems to have far superior battery life. Thanks for all of your ideas. (rooting the Hero was way, way easier)

Battery control

Does anyone know the best way to take control of this beasts battery? It lasts longer when im on it, it tears through the battery while locked..... Too many backgrounded apps maybe? Thank you guys ahead of time
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
if you think its apps running in the background try something like advanced task killer which has a auto kill feature that way it will kill any excess stuff every 30 min or what ever you set it for
also system panel will like you monitor you device/cpu/battery usage and graph it over periods like 8hrs 24hrs 3days 7days so you can see what is really using up your battery and when
Okay ty so much pack!

You might want to look for 'super power' in the android apps section- I just installed it earlier today- seems pretty sweet so far, I didn't have any luck with task killer- it actually made my phone real choppy until i removed it, not it's smooth. Super Power is still in beta, but it's designed to manage your battery usage- and you can really tweak it for your preferences

Bad app. causing some unusual battery drain. How to diagnose?

As the title suggest, I recently download some games from Play Store. Usually I downloaded a game, turn wifi OFF and they play. However, this time i forgot to do so and just played the game (Angry Gran Run) immediately after downloading. I noticed the game went into a long Loading mode and suddenly strange ads from Play Store started opening. There was also a folder created in Gallery called PICS and it has pics of Chinese cartoon characters. After a few days, I deleted those few games I downloaded and cleared the PICS folder through File Manager.
Now I have noticed some unusual battery drain. For instance, in night, my N4 goes in Deep Sleep (all the sync wifi data etc OFF) and when I wake up after 6 hours..hardly 2% battery is lost (usually 1% is lost) and if Wifi is on then around 6-7% battery is lost. Yesternight i slept and wifi was on (all sync etc being off), I saw battery drain 14% in 6 hours (when I woke up). Also, I used to get over 4 hours of battery time. Now I am getting somewhere between 3 to 3-30 hours of screen time. Plus, the ram always used around 400-600 MBs MAX...now it has reached to 850 MBs.
Is there any app through which I can diagnose what app is causing the system run in background and drain the battery?
Phone Info:
Totally Stock. No roms. No rooting. Andriod 4.2.2
Games download were:
Angry Gran Run (this always used to run in the background) DELETED
Top Truck Free DELETED
Vector DELETED
These were the games I download and played with WIFI On...so I suppose they caused the issue.
Would appreciate any help in this regard.
You can install better battery stats and look to see if something is keeping your phone awake. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 CPU spy is also useful for seeing if your phone deep sleeps or not.
Ok i will try
Guys, can any expert please shed some light on this?
Grab greenify and disable apps.

Hmm that requires ROOTING.. and I don't wanna root.
Only other thing is to disable apps within settings > apps. Any reason why you don't want to root? It's relatively easy to do and un do on nexus phones.
Thanks nikzDHD for your response. I know we can stop or uninstall app from settings > apps.. But how to know which apps are causing it to wake up all of a sudden from deep sleep. I installed BetteBatteryStats but couldn't get much from it :s..
This issue never persisted but this has occured recently when I installed a few apps. Now I really dont know out of so many apps..which one is causing this
Moreover, I am very much satisfied with Stock and don't find any cause to root it.
Go onto play store and download wake lock detector. Read the whole info about the app on the play page it gives you details that will show you your wake locks like how better battery stats does in an easier format to read.

Lol. Good that u r kidding but still I would like to add something here.
There could be numerous reasons for buying reasons besides just rooting. One of them is the fluidity of the device which is no match to any other android device.
Nexus is a developers device but its not ONLY for the developers. Mainstream consumers can buy Nexus devices and N4 has proved that. People buy OEM devices and root to get a nexus like feel. Besides, why would I root the device JUST for the sake of rooting?
Rooting offers many benefits, for example I root because I can backup my apps and such, can install adaway as I hate ads when browsing the net, for root applications like Root Explorer, to change the appearance of a rom, to stop apps from starting up and effecting battery, etc etc.
But as you mentioned most mainstream users won't have a clue on what rooting is and the potential you can do on Android.

There are many useful tools that require root and also you can root without flashing a ROM or kernel so the fluidity and stability of stock is still there. With root you'd be able to use stuff like greenify and titanium backup and other cool root apps. Its worth it...especially with a Nexus since its so easy.
If I were you to diagnose your issue get wake lock detector from play and try to disable some apps that are running in the background and see if you notice a difference.

Just root and install a custom kernel and under volt it I know you probably don't want to root, but that's really what android. If in the future you decide to return to stock, you can un-root and lock bootloader

Its your news weather app try reducing its sync, and does battery guru even work? You've only lost 2% in 5 hours which isn't bad st all presumably it was on idle all that time.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Ok. Thanks for answering. I am getting 4+ On screen time so I suppose Battery Guru may be a part of it. And earlier I use to lose 2% in 9 hours or so. Usually under 7 hours I use to lose 1%. And now, sometimes I lose 3 or 4%. I know this percentage isn't big but if we see, it has doubled in deep sleep. So this thing annoys me that there is some app that is causing the phone to wake up during deep sleep.
After installing Wakelock Detector, the battery life worsen the max it could. Overnight about 20% discharge. Woooo!
I deleted two apps.
1) Suspicious Apps.
2) Wakelock Detector
And the phone is back to its 4 hrs OST.

[Q] Bad Battery?

Hi I need your help. I just received my lg g2 yesterday and have only loaded around 15 applications with only WiFi turned on. I only use some apps, but when I went to try and play pvz 2, it really drained my battery. Is this normal on the g2? Plus people online boast 15 hours of hard usage but I can barely get through 12 on minimal use. Is this a problem? Should I get a replacement?
Thanks.
15 hours of hard use is pushing it. Average of heavy constant use is about 5-6 hours w/ screen around 50 brightness and a clean ROM. 50+ easily light use. 18% is a bit high, but that depends what else was going on and brightness. If it's a bloated stock ROM, wouldn't surprise me.

I keep my brightness on around 20% and I only lightly use it. I was playing that game with no other applications open... What do you mean a bloated stock ROM? Also what do you mean by "50+ easily light use."?
"bloated stock ROM" is the original LG-GUI ROM with preinstalled apps.
Ohh okay! Do you thing that I should try and get a replacement phone since I just got it 3 days ago?
50+ hours. You should try and debloat by disabling crap pre installed that you don't use along with the services in task manager settings. You don't need root for that. That your battery use with location reporting in Google settings off too. Of after doing so and the battery is still crappibg like that with games ect, then It's a possibility you should.
Normal
Pvz 2 is heavy games

Wow! I should be getting 50 hours without hard games... I only use it lightly so I will try and disabling some stock apps. I guess this is how some people get a couple of days in with full charge.
Its getting worse! I'm only using snapchat and reading the new York times! I think I might go to the Verizon store and ask if there's anything wrong with it...
Have you debloated? Snapchat can chew some resources among with screen. Your usage doesn't look that bad, especially in your idle marks. Don't listen to average left indicator, never right with stock readings. Here is mine debloated and clean for the past few hours, over an hour screen time. Nothing heavy.
I'm having the same issue with my Sprint variant. I've installed GSAM Battery Stats and it seems that my kernel wake lock is 80%.

I'm sorry I'm new at this, but how do I debloat?
You'll need to root your phone and freeze the apps with titanium backup. Titanium is an app that can stop the apps that are running and eating the battery up.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
You don't need root. You can debloat a lot by simply disabling some of the stock crap from app. Then go into task manager, settings / advanced , stop services. Select crap services you want to stop and press ok. Root would work much better for other apps that can't be done this way. This non root way works well though until you choose root. You could also use greenify for other crap services to stop phone wakes, but not all without root. Read up, you will completely understand after.
@masterfong,
If you don't have many personal info stored on the phone yet, I strongly suggest you do the factory reset (remember, you will lose everything on the phone, so backup first) and start from scratch again. That is the clean way.
What Steamer86 says, is removing/disabling those un-used preinstalled apps. You do not need to root for this.
Get into the App Drawer, then tap on the +/- sign on the top right corner, any app with the red X is removable. It's you to decide which app you want to use and which one you don't want to use (to us, most if not all AT&T apps are useless and considered as "bloated" so we "debloat").
Next, get into Task Manager, hit Menu tab then Settings then Stop Services, again, it's you to decide which app you want to stop.
I personally wouldn't want to do this, stop services, but strongly suggest disabling Google Location Access as well as Android Location Access.
Okay so from all of this I'm just going to do a factory reset since I have only had it for 3 days... Thanks so much you guys!

Apps i disabled are:

google play book, games, movies, music, newstand , google search, google+ , hangouts
hp print service plugin
my magazine
s health , svoice , samsung account , samsung apps , samsung galaxy apps widget, samsung push service, smart remote , Top Hd Games
got a plain black wallpaper, even after all this i cant get more than 2h30m screentime and everyone is getting 5h+ do i have a defective unit? what are my options right now? cause basically i removed everything the phone has lol. i talk to my workplace and they can send the phone for repair but i want to see if someone can help me before i do that. i have to unroot the phone if i have to send it for repair even though my phone is 0x1 on knox cause i was stupid to root with cf-root and didnt check other methods.

This system tuner app you used it not any overclocking or something that might drain you battery?
What screen brightness do you use most of the time?
Can you see what use most of your battery? There is charts you can access in settings -> battery
I run with BLAZE kernel and Alliance ROM. (install without any samsung or google bloat if you can)
And I have been using my phone constantly, playing streemed music, installing apps, downloading from internet, browsing internet, having screen active a lot...
And Now I'm at 87% and have been running 1 hour and 38 minutes on battery. (Was at about 100% battery before)
I run +5 screen brightness and don't have any special powersaving features running that limit my experience with the phone.
You could try that kernel and ROM too, I feel they improved my battery time a lot.
I also shut down some samsung and google bloat stuff like air browse, s voice and such crap, saving a little little battery.

You're set for almost four hours of screen on time there, on what seems to be very poor mobile signal. Doesn't sound that unrealistic to me to be honest.
Poor mobile signal absolutely kills battery life, as your phone spends the entire time searching and trying to get a better signal.

I see a couple of things interesting with your setup, Speaking from personal experience, I too have had battery issues drive me up a wall. I'd get just about a day on a battery when everyone else gets about 3-9 days more. My friend has an s5 all stock and he gets 9 days on a freaking battery. WTF
I rooted my first s5, with ANCH baseband and still couldn't solve all the issues with it. So I sent it back to t-mo and they sent me another one, getting batteries on ebay has also ended up a wash. 2 batteries I've received go down 20% from a full charge in the first hour and shut completely down at 32 percent at least I got a refund on that. (So be careful about ebay batteries, even though they say samsung.
So looking at yours here's what I see, Your system is staying awake, lets look at wake locks. Kik is really tearing up your machines wakelock (900wake locks) as well as the camera CPU time, i'd imagine you were recording a video at some point.
1. Go get greenify and greenify those Kik, Instagram and camera apps if thats usage while the screen is off. (No notifications on those apps, i'm afraid when you do that.)
2. Go get system tuner, make sure your rooted by towelroot (If you so choose to keep from tripping knox) and go into app mgr and find android system and go through activities, receivers and services and make sure everything you see that says IQAgent gets unchecked. This will help you stay out of ServiceIQ's eyes and also help your battery as your entire phone is debugged through those apps. (Help is on the forums somewhere)
3. Turn off google now, hotword detection and location history or you'll start noticing Google services draining your battery
4. Go get deep sleep battery saver and remove that battery saver, I personally never liked it it only suggests things to do rather than do them for you. At night or whenever you need to save your battery turn on slumber and it will only take like a percent to 5% in the morning
5. You probably have a bad battery, especially if its down to that low. Time to exchange or return
I'm incredibly disappointed, i've had to do all these things to really figure things out, heck i'd be on firefox for about 15 minutes and go down 18% (Happened this morning)
Android really has some issues with kitkat, and even though we try and fix these problems with modifications there comes a point where one just gives up and tries to deal with it.
I don't understand why my phone gets 1.2 days and my co-workers Verizon s5 gets 9 days with normal usage. Everyone seems to have crazy all over the scale battery life results. Heck, i've reset my phone and flashed so many roms that i'd be safe to say that I have yet to have 10 full discharges in the 4 weeks i've had the phone. At the end of the day though, it's mountains better than my iphone 5 with a lenmar battery case.
Wish I could say the same with stability, I'd be on my bike and switch tracks (or try) and stuff just doesn't respond, heck I can't even go with voice activation with wired headphones and that is really a downer for me. I want to be able to hold down the pause and play and get the google now boop boop sound and speak as i'm riding.
I'm tired of this, and google has no answers, the fixes above only seem to add a couple of hours but not the 9 days I was seeing.

Gtalk, whatsapp, line, google drive, dropbox, gmail, Yahoo mail, corporate mail, all running. No greenify. No battery saver.
Now playing games is different thing. 2-3 hours max.
My battery is amazing. I keep the screen brightness lower, keep networks and chips off when not using, i use bootmanager to prevent apps from launching ay boot and only 1 active widget. Good for a day and a half of very fair use !
