i bought my hero last week and ive been playing with it and installing alot of apps and such along with different roms testing the speed and overall battery life. right now im running fresh 1.1 rom and several apps from the market. the thing runs really fast and the battery life is amazing. it went all day yesterday and all last night and just now its at 29%. and this is with moderate use!
i do have a question though, how much free ram is normal for this phone. i see with all of my apps and such i have about 75-85% free when i use task killer. and yes my apps are on the sd!
also what would you guys recommend for a extended battery. i don't want a huge one that will require another back cover. just one that's a higher capacity.
edit: just a FYI, don't install the antivirus app from the market, it is a HUGE battery killer. i know we don't need the app but i wanted to test it out.

first read this. as far as your memory goes istalling and testing all those apps have you cleared out your cache recently? As even though the apps are on the SD they still store the cache on internal.
I'll second nixing the task killer. I was a skeptic at first, but I sacked the task killer and took note over the next two days. Much better WITHOUT the task killer.

Yup. Very happy with speed and reliability. Can't imagine why I ever needed a task killer.
Battery is way better than I expected. I play with my hero all day, browser internet, youtube watch, check email, download apps. The phone still has 20% more battery. And the memory control is good. I used to use taskkiller. But now I don't use it anymore. I don't turn off hero for 3 or 4 days, app runs quickly. But the Android system has to improve. It could be better.
Same here. Battery life is pretty good. Quit using a task killer and the phone is running great. If you have Astro or ES File Explorer installed they have a task manager/killer built in that you can use if you REALLY think you need to kill something.
Battery. There is a thread in the Sprint HTC Hero section on androidforums about a replacement battery that is higher capacity but fits with the stock battery cover. Everybody seems to love it.
It won't let me post a link to it, but you can go to androidforums.com and go to the Sprint HTC Hero section and search for Mugen Battery 1800mAh.

Bro, this is Linux, not windows. An anti-virus would just be a waste of time
my battery life blows. i don't have many apps running either. wake up at 7am and it's dead by around 10pm with not too much use.
GMail in use
GV set to 5m updates
DealDroid set to 15m updates
WeatherBug app in the background (same battery span with TWC or other weather widgets/apps)
Bloo app in background sometimes

my suggestion: make a shortcut with bettercut and sync on demand.
Is there anyway to increase the battery life on the aria? I love it, and I love sense, but within about twelve or so hours of moderate use in the day my battery is left with roughly 20%. With cyanogenmod, the same period of time and usage, I was left at 60% battery. I know the sense launcher and Widgets play a little part of that, but even with my hero, battery life wasn't that much of a difference between vanilla and sense roms.

I would suggest an App killer. I have yet to try cyanogen's ROM but am on Attn1's Liberated Rom. I have Bluetooth enabled all day and by the end of 12hrs it is at 25% or so. Not saying switch. I would try Advanced task killer. Have many friends using that on their EVO's and Nexuses and their battery is wayyyy better.

I have read somewhere on the google (official google page about android stuff), using task killers does NOT improve battery life because background apps stated as "suspended" when they are in background. I dont know if I get it right. I will post link if I can find.
P.S. Couldn't find it but it was something similar with this:
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
Of course, you must take control off applications really "running" in background and preventing the phone sleep state. Not just "killing" all applications.

Mmmmm. If there's one thing that could drag me over from the standard Liberated ROM over to the Froyo ROM, it would be longer battery life.*
Perhaps I'll give it a shot this weekend.

* I've resisted the urge to switch, only because I've heard wildly conflicting stories about how fast it runs on the Aria.
don't use task killer it will kill the app but the app will just start up again in the background cause the battery to run out. it says its in the background and that's true but its not running its idle and isn't affecting battery.

I have to say, at stock clock it got sluggish at times, overclocked to 800 though its running absolutely great!

You might want to try out an app called Autostarts. Just make sure you don't turn anything off you really are gonna need. Try this with advanced task killer and the apps wont load back up.

Check that you do not have an app constantly running in the background - on my stetup, I found that the XDA app was burning 3-5% CPU time spooling in the background doing nothing. (using OSMonitor)
For what its worth, I went back to the Sense ROM (FR008) from CM6.1 because of strange battery behavior - some days dropping to 30-40% after a full day, others it would be dead by 5pm. I dont consider my self a heavy user either. I do not see a significant difference in battery life between the two ROMs, if you throw out the aberrant days that CM would go nuts on me.
T
So I used to be totally against task killers. Well I've been experiencing horrible battery life since switching to froyo. I've tried different modems, every rom, every kernel, been doing everything to get the best batt life I can. I've found myself getting at best 8-12 hours of battery life. Which is livable. Well I read adryn's signature about how to win at Quad, and decided to try system panel lite. Been using the widget to kill all tasks about every hour and now I'm sitting at ~60% battery. It's been a light usage day but even how I've used the phone today I'd be around 5-30% battery life by now. So not a night and day jump, but a good enough jump to mention. I just felt the need to post this thread for those still struggling with battery life. Try this out and report back.
I will be sure to try it. I have struggled with battery life to the point that I actually went back to eclair for a bit . I can't live without froyo anymore so I am gonna try whatever it takes.

I've been using System Panel since I got my phone, it's a really great app, way better than ATK or any of those other BS tk's.

Ive been using advanced task killer froyo since moving on to 2.2 . I have it set to auto kill all apps but ignored apps everytime my screen times out. But it does well not closing apps im using. Such as pandora, browser etc. I get 20 hrs average with moderate use. It hasnt died on me since eb01

I recommend ES Task Manager. It isn't an automated killer (so no risk of it running rampant and doing more harm than good), and gives nice manual control for knocking out apps that are acting up. It is a nice upgrade from the stock one.
Swyped grumpily from my advertised as "can be upgraded to Android 2.2" device
I am now on 25 hours without a charge and still have 65% battery left. Previously I couldn't make it through the day without hooking up the umbilical cord of life. I used to clear apps regularly with the stock task manager but would start out with 150MB free after boot and by the end of the day could not get better than 80MB free. Everyone was crying memory leaks. These are NOT memory leaks but errant programs that cache behind trhe scenes draining your battery and stealing resources. They are also immune to the stock task killer.
I found these bad bad apps by installing Memory Booster Lite from the market. After getting a 0 applications closed I went into the Task Killer in Memory Booster and found a bunch of apps loaded into memory still! Things like Google + hogging 28 MB of memory! There was Amazon Appstore, Maps, Facebook, Beatiful Widgets, Email, Telenav, Netflix, logsprovider....all immune to the stock task killer and slowly eating memory during the day as they load. I killed all the ones I recognized (no com.XXXX stuff) and then checked back in a few minutes to see what would reload. Google +, Beautiful Widgets, Facebook, Maps, and others would reload. Using the paid version of Titanium backup I froze apps like Google +, Maps, Netflix, and others that I don't use daily. You can use other apps for this like Autostarts. I deleted apps that are not worth my memory and battery power. I also set all syncs to manual and keep the display down as low as I need to. The results were tripling my battery life. I also stay on Wifi as much as possible and as soon as I get off XDA App, Tapatalk or any browser clear it with the stock task killer. I always have about 140 MB free now.
Your mileage may vary. The display is the biggest battery killer so if your a gamer, or spend hours reading, don't expect a lot of improvement from this but you will see some. I hope this helps battery life and memory leak myths for some of you.
The important thing in this forum is to have fun and help others.
I'm not trolling, and you do have great suggestions here. I just wish there were some easy way to get an entire day of full use without having to get an extended battery while using the epic to its full potential. I like autosync, adecently lit screen, and my range of Widgets which I use daily. Too bad I can't go more than 16 hours with everything on. I have tried at one point most of your suggestions, and it did greatly improve battery life. I suggest anyone at least give it a shot and then slowly turn back on the things they must have, like gmail sync or haptic feedback.

Blankrubber, this is a good place to add on to what I just found. The key is to see what else is running that is immune to the stock task killer. I never knew how much Google + and Maps were killing my battery. I got rid of my extended battery long ago but now I am sill amazed. 29 hours and 52% left. But the key when you say using it fully is limiting display time and intensity. No matter what that is the biggest drain so if you are glued to your phone for over 4 hours it will always be tough to make it last. Phones that used to be just phones could go days without charge. Now they are little computers. Think...laptops only go about 2 hours runtime without a charge and those batteries are a lot bigger.
I use Bloat Freezer myself. It shows whatever is running in the background highlighted in gray. Google+,Maps, the others Kenny mentioned are the usual suspects. Doing what Kenny said will help out for sure. Yes, its annoying we have to do this to extend battery life but some apps are always at work. Memory Booster is pretty good. Viper baked it in a ROM a while back. Its definately worth checking out

If something is just sitting in memory why would that have any effect on battery life? It should actually improve your battery life cuz then it just loads the app from memory and not a full re open of the app. Now if your saying that these questionable apps are just running processes then yes that would have an effect on battery as it is just sitting there doing something. But back to the memory side of this. Memory is used in all devices to take some of the load off the processor to make it load faster. It is there for a reason every device would not use memory if it was not efficient at loading apps and saving battery.
But if you only use the app once a week or so why waste those resources or the initial load time. If it sits in memory and another app needs that memory the processor uses more power and battery swapping apps in and out of memory needlessly. My phone is super fast and running 32 hours with 46% left. I can't put up a better argument than those results. Memory swapping is bad on battery it seems.

I've been around the Android platform for more than 3 years. I've pretty much read all google has shared with us (the Military) for application development and I do agree that there are dormit services that hog up your memory / battery even when your not using the phone.
I agree with this dev and his tool: http://andrs.w3pla.net/autokiller/details
I think that he nailed it when he found out how did Android manage memory and the determination it takes in order to "kill" what you don't use.
Now... Do you care to share what you know about the subject that we don't, in stead of just coming bashing and leaving?

+1 for V6, im usually at 250mb free ram consistently, while closing NOT A DAMN THING
For that basher out there, I am sorry if I don't spend hours watching porn on my phone for you to really judge battery life but here is the pic:
And I may not be able to code Android but I am familiar in C++ and CPU usage and how much you lose by not having available memory to swap programs with.

Nice. That was my issue though is that some of these memory/battery killers don't show up in the launcher's task killers. Google + and Maps never show up and get stopped and continue to kill the battery getting data behind the scenes because Google wrote them in that way. It is important to at least check if you have bad battery life what else is running with a good task killer like Memory Booster Lite.
i think the best solution for battery life is autokiller, v6 script and titanium..the stock gingerbread task manager aka (the running services in settings) isn't that great...when i was on eg22, i noticed it displayed the wrong amount of ram left and didn't display every single app running in the background..autokiller is able to see every single app running in the background but never kill the programs with (com.google and android.process)...I only kills apps i use like engadget and pulse..when u exit these with back button, they always stay in the background and use autokiller to make sure it's completely killed...never set any task killer to autokill apps, that will drain your battery faster...and they are some annoying 3rd party apps that always run in the background since they are not coded well (imo)..for example, i froze the script manager with titanium after i implemented the v6 script because it kept restarting itself all the time..i suggest people follow RandomKing's tutorial on how to extend battery life, it helped a lot..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106524...i constantly have 150 to 200 ram free with im not running any apps..im on eco5 aosp rom with eco5 (eg22 and eh06 are not stable enough for me)
To be honest, I think you're overestimating the effect these task killers are having on your phone.
Your graph looks very similar to mine when I'm using it moderately, and I haven't installed any task killers. (And, yes, I've got the same Maps, Google+, etc apps on my phone). The only changes I've made are:
- Turning my screen brightness all the way down.
- Having very few non-push syncs.
Today I'll be using my phone a lot as a camera, but I'll try to remember to leave it off the charger one day this week so that I have a power graph that lasts longer than 18 hours.
I rooted my nexus 10 uisng the method here. instead of using mrskip's took kit i used Wugfresh's as it has 4.4.2. I was able to root just fine. Included in the root package is Busybox (I think that is what it is called) and Superuser. Now I seem to have an issue with the battery.
Prior to root I installed Advanced Task Killer, Lookout, and Weatherbug. These three I want to run in the background all the time. Also prior to root I installed a few games (angry birds). I will be honest and tell you I did not use the Nexus a lot becuase I planning on rooting it.
After root I re-installe the Advanced Taks Killer, Lookout, and Weatherbug along with a number of other apps and games. Now I have using the nexus and the battery is draining very quckly and not charging well at all. So far it has dropped to 0 once while using it. It went from 40% to 0 in about 45 minutes. I was playing a game. Acording the Advanced Task Killer, and the button you double next to the home button (don't know name) to bring up running apps, nothinng else was running. Last night it was at 95%. I used if for about 1.5hrs and it dropped to 50%. I had it charging using the usb while I was on it for about 1 of those hours.
In an effort to conser battery power in general, I have the brightness set to auto, the screen turns off after a minute, I routinally kill open/running apps. I have the taks killer to kill apps on a regular schedule. I have the play store set to NOT auto-update.
1) Now that the Nexus is rooted, is there a way to adjust how background options work to minimize battery drain?
2) Is there options in Superuser or Busybox to adjust the native apps to make them NOT run in the background?
3) I do not mind it taking a few seconds (or 30) for an app to start up, how can I make sure some apps do not run unless I open them (youtube, play store, etc)
First I would drop the task killer as time and time again these prove to be a detriment on performance and battery life. If you must have one than use watchdog, but don't set it to auto kill anything
But you are probably better off using something like greenify now that you are rooted. Oh and the other two you mentioned, wheatherbug and lookout, these will more than likely drain your battery too, its up to you if you need them but personally I feel they will waste battery more than help
