Good evening everyone,
I recently acquired a Verizon LG G2 as my work phone. I want to root it, but I'm worried that when the kit kat update comes I won't be able to unroot. Also a friend of mine said that the update might actually break the root access. I was reading that Kit kat is unrootable so I would like to root it while I still have the chance, but I need to be able to unroot it because it is my work phone.
What is the best method for rooting the Verizon G2, as well as unrooting. And is there a way for me to keep root access when the kit kat update eventually comes, as well as unroot from kit kat?
On at&t someone made a flashable zip of kit Kat. We just had to flash that and superuser in custom recovery. You lose the custom recovery but have root.

Ok once you root you can take ota as long as a)you don't have custom recovery and b)you have not changed anything on the phone, also in the supersu pro you have the survival mode which is that if you take an ota chances of survival are higher and the unroot option which unroots your phone

Im on 4.3 MK2 rooted, how do I go about upgrading to 4.4 without losing my root?
check the playstore for a 4.3 root keeper--not sure if there is one--still may not work
then you have to re-root 4.4--not sure if that is available either

Last I checked there is no root for the 4.4.2 leak. You might want to check that thread to be sure.
As for the future official att ota... Only time will tell.

The 4.4 att or a comes out tomorrow, I'm actually interested in upgrading so I want to know if it's possible retain root while upgrading. Or if we should just wait for a 4.4 root

Currently there is no root for 4.4.2 Kit Kat. But as we all know from past experience, it's only a matter of time before the great minds of XDA make it happen.

I think I answered your question. There is no root keeper for 4.3 afaik and even if there was, it may not work. If you NEED root don't update.
Or, wait till a 4.4 root method comes out--

My Galaxy S4 is rooted, but not running a custom ROM. It's currently running 4.2.2 and it downloaded the 4.3 update, but when I apply it, it fails. Is it failing because it's rooted? How can I get it to update to 4.3,or even better, 4.4.2 (Stock ROM, just want it rooted)?
Try searching its not hard. And yes it won't accept because you're rooted and if it did take it you would lose root.
Is there anyway to just download the 4.4.2 update and install it? I want it to be EXACTLY the same as if it had come OTA from Sprint.
Download the tar for NAE and Odin it. Done deal.

How do I do this? Do I have to unroot the phone first?
I'm wondering how you achieved root. Search and learn.
No. If you don't know how to use Odin you have a lot of reading to do.

I honestly don't remember how I rooted the phone. That was 7 months ago. It is completely rooted though, I can do what I need/want to with it, but I want Kitkat and root.
Well first of all you will need Odin, Samsung drivers, and this file on your PC.

Are you in the correct area? Your carrier says Verizon. Their gs4's suck to root.
I am on Sprint. I'll update that. Also, flashed my phone with Kitkat and rooted it. Everything's working fine. Thanks everybody!
Hello, my friends. I need help from us. I have Samsung SGH-I337 Z, I337ZTUUAMH1 4.2.2 android version. I need to update this telephone. I bought it with ROOT, Sim-Unlock yet. Help please
To get the ota update you need to return your device to stock. I googled i337Z firmware and found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448794
If it updates to 4.4.2 there currently is not a root method so if you need root you'll have problems.
Edit, oh, backup everything first as it'll delete everything
Help
Up, i need 4.3 android on i337z mh1, not stock update
Well the 4.4.2 update is available but I'm not going to update because it might loose root

I can confirm that towel root works on the I337Z with 4.4.2, build TUUBNE2. However, Safestrap doesn't seem to work. Also, at least for the time being, I don't see any way of unlocking the bootloader with 4.4, so you may want to try to unlock the bootloader before upgrading to 4.4, if that's of interest to you.
agree I rooted a store demo with towel root and it worked hahaha , but I haven't tried safestap on a phone running kitkat , mine is running the intika rom now and I'm not planing to update for now
One thing that is a bit concerning to me, is that towel root requires internet access to function.. it makes me wonder why.
For the most part, I'm ok with the stock (rooted) rom, as I can disable/cleanup most of what I need to. The only thing I haven't been able to fix is the missing hotspot option - not sure how to get this option to show up.
Hello
When i enter in download mode in my g2 802, it says rooted but is not.... i have the stock 4.4.2, and i tried whit iroot and it instal super user but dont work dont have the binary... i dont understand wy it says rooted if is not? The rooted flag didn't clear when you updated to 4.4.2. There isn't root for kitkat. There probably won't be any time soon so if you want it back find one of the threads explaining how to downgrade and get root properly on kitkat. It

I've seen several posts on using the leaked 4.4. Has anyone successfully retained root after 4.4 ota using the official 4.3 currently rooted? I really don't want to install safestrap or the leaked 4.4 .
Also,
Whats the big deal about 4.4? Should I just freeze 4.3 to keep root?

Read. It really is a very special release and everybody that's running a rooted note 3 should be on it.

Everyone retains root. You have to be rooted to install it and the rom is already rooted.

If you want the already rooted 4.4, I'm pretty darn sure you MUST use safestrap. Otherwise, you are stuck with the un-rooted leak.
Yeah. Safestrap and the rooted leak is the only way to go.
I see what he is asking now. Has anyone who was running rooted 4.3 taken an official OTA update to kit kat and retained root.. Seeing as the official kit kat OTA on Verizon hasn't happened yet, nobody can say.

Yes this is exactly what I am asking. Thanks
I like the phone the way it is and have tweaked a few things with xposed and so I want to keep root. However if there is a wonderful new feature on 4.4 that I can't live without then I might need to figure out 4.4 root.
For now I am just going to freeze the update service.
Actually the official OTA is probably going to be very bad and we may not be able to do as much with it. May not even get root. The leaked version is tweaked for performance, and already rooted, and has some features that would never be in an official release. I highly recommend you go ahead with it and forget about trying to be the only guy on here that wants to wait for the official leak and possibly loose root in the process. You won't get much help rooting it when everybody is already on a rooted kit kat. Nobody is going to waste time with it.

From what I read a while ago Root Keeper does not work with 4.3. I checked and that is still the case. I can only assume it also would not work for 4.4.
I did read that SuperSU has a preserve root function. I think somewhere else I read you temp unroot then preserve root. After taking the OTA you enable root again.
Something like this.

I know but there's not been an OTA yet so how would anyone know if it works on the OTA?

The leaked version is a gold mine! It allows you to go back to 4.3 at any time via odin where as the official will not allow this. I am currently running leaked version and it is flawless. You dont have to have SafeStrap active after installing it just need to have it installed. I havent even opened SS since installing the leaked 4.4.2 update.

This is the second reason for asking. If people ota upgrade that have root and want to experiment then they could post their results here. So I believe I need to ask this before people start accepting ota.
