Should I update to 4.3? And some questions - Xperia SP General

So hello, I'm new here on xda developers but I always checked the site
I purchased this mobile two days ago. Already rooted but I haven't updated to 4.3 cuz I heard that there are lots of bugs.
So what should I do? Is wi-fi improved? And how I can backup my files, cuz I installed many games and I don't want to do it again.
Also, will I have to root it again?

Wifi is improved
If you update via PCC or OTA, you won't lose data. However if you flash via flashtool and tick "wipe data", you will lose data
Lastly you have to root again and there's no root method out yet which does not involve wiping data.if you have to root it again, you WILL lose your data as all the methods indirectly require you to do so
By the way, updating via Sony Update Service (SUS), wipes data

Okay, I will update from Sony PC Companion. So FolderMount won't work
Wish there was easy root method...
Anyone working on it?

I've heard that the devs are busy. However they might work on in it once the latest update is out. A new update has been certified which might be a bug-fixing one. Should hit us mid-March.

Oh as for your first question, i think you should update.
The only bugs i faced was that music led pulse does't work all the time (the light just stays on and doesn't blink)
Also FB calender sync does not work.
Other than that 4.3 is FAR better than 4.1.2 in terms of performance, looks and everything else. Go for it

Thanks alot!
okay I will update anyway. And is it possible to back-up data after rooting?

Once rooting gets here, yeah sure. Using titanium backup.
And you wouldn't lose data now via PCC so no problem

4.3 is horrible, I've used it for 4 days... constant lagging, sometimes fc's, even random reboots :-\ This is not how this phone should work :-\ Now I have eXistenZ and it's better but still not as good as it should.
It would seem like ram management issues.

From what I've gathered by reading lots of comments about 4.3, the update it's a mixed bag (probably region-dependent) since for me it was one of the best things to happen to my stock SP: it looks better, it feels better, it barely lags, it barely hangs. I flashed the generic US ftf (since the OTA kept failing over and over again) and I'm glad I did it.

(See second part below, for locked BL)
(strictly speaking, this is not "rooting" the stock rom, rather a means of having a rooted stock 4.3 rom, without unlocking the BL).
#I've managed to get it done... For this, I had to downgrade to 4.1.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50356952&postcount=8), root 4.1.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405933), and install CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2352920), then followed the instructions (to get root 4.3) in above links. Had to erase all data in the process.
*[backed up the TA partition while rooted at 4.1.2, just in case it might be needed later.. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598)]
My phone model: c5303
#For backing up data WITHOUT root, I used the app "Backup & restore" which comes with stock rom (under 'Tools'). However, it didn't restore my game data properly. Alternatively, can try backup and restore with ADB (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19225467/backing-up-android-device-using-adb), but I couldn't try it's restore function yet, so not sure whether it works. If you've backed up the data while at 4.1.2 rooted (initially) with titanium backup, there's not much of a dilemma I suppose..
Dunno whether this provides any solution to your problem, but glad if this helps anyone. Just sharing my experience..

Accept ota 4.2 on rooted Nexus 7

My 7 is asking if I want to update to 4.2. Of course I do since I am running 4.1.2 but I don't want to lose root. Will I be able to reroot with WugFresh? I had real problems rerooting after I installed 4.1.2.

My guess would be that parent lost root.
I was rooted myself, accepted the OTA (the one before today did NOT break root), and lost root.
First time I saw this? Luks manager, which I use to mount an encrypted filesystem complained not having root.
As I am rooted using Wugfresh' toolkit, I will wait until he has updated his toolkit and/or stated it will work with the new build (JOP40C).
Kind regards,
Roel
I'll post this here to save making a new topic. I updated to 4.2 ota and lost root. I'm still unlocked but don't have root access. Since I'm post update I can't install any root keepers. How to I get root again? And will I lose all my data and apps? Will I have to do a system reset? Thanks

On the update to 4.1.2 about 3 weeks ago, I forgot to use OTA Rootkeeper and lost root. I plugged it back into my PC and used WugFresh's Nexus Tool Kit program to re-root my N7. I did not lose any information of any kind.
Maybe I'm wrong, but only unlocking the bootloader completely wipes everything but rooting should not. :good:

Just found on Google Play:
Automatically mount and dismount USB sticks on various devices like the Galaxy Nexus.
!!! CURRENTLY NOT WORKING ON ANDROID 4.2 !!!
1-starring the app because of that will certainly not help make it compatible. This is a complicated issue which requires some ugly hacks to fix - I'm trying to find the least ugly and most reliable way to work around the new security measures in 4.2 that ended up breaking StickMount. It will take some time (and updating my paid apps to 4.2 has priority, sorry)

Dont want to open up a new thread so I'm gonna throw my question here
I've rooted and unlocked my N7 and I messed the crap out of it using custom roms/kernels/menus etc and I want to reset it and revert back to completely stock 4.2. Now of course, I will download the factory image of 4.2 and re-flash it via adb and all but my question is this:
1. Atm I have 4.2 installed but im on the stock vanilla boot loader (the one that came with 4.1) I havent updated it neither to the bootloader of 4.1.2 nor the 4.2 one. When I reflash my Nexi with the factory 4.2 image, it will flash the new bootloader naturaly but will I be able to unlock it and install a custom recovery without issues?
2. Is the factory 4.2 rootable?
Thanks in advance fellow forumites

Stock non-rooted ics to jb upgrade, backup/restore apps and data

Hello all, a totally stock 8013, never rooted.
I use it for work so I would appreciate the best way of backing up and restoring that will get my app data, and background and apps back on my tablet as quick and easy as possible.
I would use Titanium backup but again not root which makes my table a great candidate for upgrade.
Thanks for the advice!

You shouldnt lose any apps when you update so I think itll be ok.
yes if you upgrade from ICS or any previous version to 4.1.2 You will not loose any data
If your device is upgraded by the OTA update you will for sure not loose any date
To use titanium back to back and restore you need to be rooted

How many ppl are not going to Root

I've been using this phone for a little over a week now (T-Mobile US version) and I don't feel an immediate need to root and throw a custom Rom on this bad boy.
When first got my GS3 I rooted and put CM on it within the first hour. Is anyone in a similar position where you don't feel nagging need to root?
Not saying I won't root or Rom this phone but so far I'm cool with the out of box experience

I've had the Z for about 4 months now and haven't had much of a desire to root it. The only real reason would be to mod the softkeys or something. The phone does everything I really need it to do; I can't find a problem that rooting would fix at the moment. I haven't had much of a desire to root my last two phones actually (Xperia Z, Razr Maxx), don't know if I'm just getting lazy or the phones are just more functional these days without root.

I rooted my XZ as soon as I got it, it's up to you though. You can always unroot it, I think...
I've been very happy with the original rom because I prefer it to other oem roms. I like the cleanliness and the simplicity. Plus, I don't want to root because it'll affect specialized features unique to Sony such as the Mobile Bravia engine.
Rooting and unlocking BL is not the same.
Root does not affect the bravia engine BL unlocking does...
With root you can get special features like call blocker, LBE Security master Bloat remover and you can unroot if have a problem
BL unlock yes you could lock it back and you can have bravia working again, BUT YOU CANNOT REMOVE YOUR IMEI FROM SONY'S OUT OF WARRANTY LIST.
I rooted my phone for CWM, Titanium backup and greenify and more importantly, the loud sound mod.
Rooting is so easy and it doesn't void the warranty so I see no point in not doing it lol

Cyanogenmod requires a custom kernel, and thus, requires your bootloader to be unlocked.
Keep in mind that root does not equal bootloader unlocked. If your device is bought from a carrier (T Mobile, for example) you won't be able to install CM or its derivatives due to the lack of ability to unlock the bootloader.
I had everything installed on my PC to root & BLU 4 weeks before i got my fone
You can be happy with stock sony rom and feels the need to root, root access has nothing to do with ROM !
You won't void your warranty and you won't lost NOTHING!

I'm not rooting my phone - I don't really need to do that, and there are some important apps like Barclays Mobile that refuse to work on rooted phones. So count me as one.
I just got black one yesterday and tried root today with Bin4ry v31 but it seems to be stuck at white display test and running batch file at
"/data/local/tmp/onload.sh ..."
I think t-mobile xperia z need something new to be rooted.

Don't root. The modded firmwares are not worth the effort, I tried most of them. CM 10.1 is nice, as long as you don't need the phone's camera - no HDR
You can simply disable not wanted apps with a stock phone just fine. Overclocking is also useless, the Z throttles down way too quick
Sorry thought you meant bootloader unlocking!
I held out until yesterday, as I've not rooted a phone before, complete noob of the highest order, now I'm rooted with dual recovery running monxrom and pureinfinity sound mod, changed all my icons in nav bar and bottom bar via monx mods, may change fonts if I find one I like.

What about 4.4.4 for z2

As even the Z have the 4.4.4 Android,i think Sony is shaming their prev. Which features of 4.4 are you desperate for? I'd rather that any updates where done well rather than rushed just so we can have it. As for the defects, gaps don't matter as long as device integrity is maintained I haven't seen anyone suggesting they are affecting this? Uncentered camera again as long as it doesn’t affect function I couldn't care less.
I'll go out on a limb here and say maybe Sony's just waiting for Android 5 to update?

They most probably plan to update the z2 to the same 4.4.4 software on the recently unveiled z3 army. That's why it's later than the 4.4.4 software released for older devices. They wanted to showcase it with the z3. Hopefully it'll hit the z2 soon.
That would be bad news for Z1 and z1 compact users because the software on the z3 has improvements for the camera.

There will be but don't expect to much.
Deodex your firmware and install superuser MOD.
That's two mins task and you won't even notice you deodex it...
What you'll see is great new MODs and APPs.
On older device there were "problems" when you were deodexing firmware.
Simply, without dex files for system to cache process, many devices become slower after deodexing.
All that doesn't apply on devices strong like Z1/Z2/Z3.
So there's no reason for you not to deodex your firmware.
Especially if you are already rooted...
Why to stop there?

I know what's what, but there's lots of questions, for example which recovery should I use, can I delete recovery later on if I plan on selling it in favor to z3, and I suppose once I get deodex rom, ota updates are out of the question, right?

Once you root device you can forget on OTA (at least on stock, existenz have its own OTA).
It's very simple to deodex ROM.
Just check which firmware are you using.
Download deodex patch for that firmware and flash it from recovery.
Your data will stay intact and nothing will change (of course, don't wipe data from recovery after or before flashing deodex patch, cache and dalvik wipe is what you need to do after flashing.
You can remove recovery, root and restore dex files, that's not problem.
Simply flash stock ftf using flashtool or if you have problems with your device flash stock firmware using PC Companion (repair function) and everything will be "stock"
After that, take your sdCard out of device and delete XZDR folder and files (there's remover, tool from NUT, to remove recovery but you can do that this way as well)
If your carrier will check your device for warranty purpose, they could reject your device because it's rooted as well so deodexing isn't something that could make more problems.
It's up to you but there's only one way to use, system (signed), Z3 apps and/or apps from other devices.

Thank you very much mate, I forgot that I can have recovery even if I have locked bootloader, its uncommon for me since I've never have had Sony device before, I guess it's easy later to restore everything later if I need to claim warranty, but just one thing,
few days ago I did software repair via PC companion, after that I had root BUT w/o permission to write, just to read system files, how's that possible?
Thanks again for the big answer,
regards mate!
I'd prefer getting Android 5, rather than getting 4.4.4 update for my Z2. So, if I'm waiting to get Android 5, it's all good.

Hmm...that shouldn't be the case after you root device.
Did you updated supersu binaries?
Download this and flash through recovery
https://app.box.com/s/knwvu1jfzs1vec9n6vr0
That will update supersu binaries.
Then try...
Sure, no problem, I'm glad if I helped..

How to root (SGP561) Z2 Tablet Verizon, new update 23.0.1.E.0.208 (4.4.4)

Hi guys, finally I've found a way to get the latest update 23.0.1.E.0.208 (4.4.4) without losing root on this tablet.
The method is the same as the method here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155), but we will use the files for Xperia Z2 Tablet Verizon instead of files for Xperia Z2.
First, you MUST BE on an older version (17.1.D.0.437) with root and XZDualRecovery
You need these files:
1. New 23.0.1.E.0.208 update FTF file (you can use XperiFirm to get it)
2. PRFCreator v0.5.zip (I tried the later version v0.8 but it didn't work, so better to use v0.5)
3. Latest stable SuperSU update package
4. XZDualRecovery flashable patched version (in the attachment) (note that the original version from [NUT] will not allow you to mount system rw)
Then follows step 4 to 11 in the instructions in the above thread for Xperia Z2 and replace all the files for Xperia Z2 with the files you've just got.
Good luck!
thanks for this, will try it this week...
noticed any issues with this update on the verizon tab?
Is it possible to flash back to 4.4.2, to root? Sadly, mine came with the newest update.

Worked like a charm! Thank you for posting this.
How come this cannot be posted as a flashable zip? Why do we need to create our own file? Just curious.

My internet connection sucks. It takes long to upload large files.
Trying to do this, however it seems we need a custom recovery already installed. Trying to install the XZDualRecovery from the installer file I downloaded but it just hangs at libdvm opened. Any other way to install a custom recovery so I can follow the rest of the guide to get my replacement tab rooted?

Sounds to me like you need to flash the old ftf first, then root and then install the custom recovery. Root only works on the older firmware linked above.

Thanks, I thought you had to have a recovery already installed for that. Downloaded everything I need plus old FTF file, can't seem to get it to work right. Think I am having driver problems even tho it works fine in fastboot mode through ADB. Can't get Sony PC companion to work either even tho I've downloaded pretty much every driver I can find for it. I'm on Windows 8.1
I never managed to get it to work on windows 8.1 by had a windows 7 laptop laying around and that worked fine. I would recommend finding a non 8.1 computer. Good luck.

Got it working. I didn't know I had to have the unknown sources checked. Also I didn't realize I was plugged into a 3.0 port in the back of my PC, so that didn't help.
Now that I'm on the old version and rooted, I saw some people had success with updating to the newest update for VZW and keeping root. Can anyone else confirm this? I have TWRP and everything on my HTC, but my tablet I would rather not mess with it as much. The steps in this guide are pretty involved.

I am on the newest firmware and rooted, so I can confirm that it works.
It's not as bad as it seems. Just follow the steps and you will be a better human for it! Happy hacking and debloating.

Yup just did this, everything is working great, thanks!
My camera doesn't work after updating. Every time I hit the capture button it just freezes. I'd like to just wipe and do a clean install. Can I just do it in TRWP? Will I lose root?

Should be fine, I wiped mine after the whole process and had no problems at all.

There was a leaked Lollipop update I saw today on XperiaBlog. Could this method be used to update?
Update: worked like a charm. Running lollipop with root and nuts dualboot

Is it possible to have this uploaded again since it's no longer available. ftf file for 17.1.D.0.437
Also PRFCreator v0.5.zip since the earliest one available is v0.7.
Thanks!
