[Q]Worth rooting?

Hi, have had much fun with my rooted HTC Sensation, and I've this great Samasung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but is worth it to root my tab? Waiting for ICS to come for 7.7...

Yes it is because you can install titanium backup to back up all your apps and CWM to install different mods and more importantly back up your entire tab. Since you already have the experience you already know the benefits of it.

On top of the normal reasons to root your Android device, root apps and what Adinis78 mentioned, the number one reason to do it on the 7.7 is the mod to keep your launcher in memory instead of always having to load icons/widgets when returning home. I almost returned the thing before finding Jade Eyed Wolf's instructions.

I own aa wifi 7.7. I am thinking abt the same thing as wifi only version barely has any custome rom.. what do u guys think?

Until Samsung releases an update with a fix, or app devs change the way that apps address the external SD card on the 7.7, rooting and editing the platform file is the only way that any installed apps can write to your external SD card. It's annoying to have to hack the device to get it to work correctly, but there we are.

one to choose?
Had been thinking about the problem with external sd-card How stable are the ROM's at the moment? And which one should i choose?

Not to knock that dev working on the tweaked ROMs for the 6800, but it doesn't seem worth the bother. Lots of bugs are being reported.

I think I may root once ICS is out. It will be my first time rooting though.. So I hope I can understand the tutorial perfectly

I wouldn't worry about roms right now unless you are a power user since ICS is probably going to come out soon. but here some general reasons for rooting that I know of:
-Keep launcher in memory (so homescreen icons and widgets don't lag upon reload)
-To apply a theme to the notification bar at the bottom
-HoneyBar/HideBar to get true full-screen (my main reason)...This is arguably the most important reason to root since AMOLED screens have a tendency to burn-in. with your clock and controls there ALL the time, it's very possible that prolonged use at high brightness will burn it in. it happened to my first Samsung Vibrant within a couple of months
-Chainfire to get access to tegra games
-Ad Free to get rid of all in-app ads
-Back-up/restore for apps
if you care about any of these, rooting is super easy....if not, then dont worry about it

Same here... I'll root it after a few weeks after we get the ICS OTA up-date...

Just rooted my Tab 7.7. I hope I don't regret it...

I don't think so, usually the browser has a built-in ad block algorithm. The ad block generally only blocks Google ads.

As long as you make a note of your official firmware, screen shoot perhaps, you can flash it back using Odin to get rid of root. Download it all now just in case the links stop working and to make sure it's actually available.

I just got my Galaxy Note 10.1 today and I wanted to know what are the benefits of rooting this device. I currently have a rooted SGS2 so I know about rooting but I would like to know are there some cool features with root vs stock? Also which rom and themes (I love themes) do you recommend for stabilty and great battery life? I would like to keep all the features like snote, multi window etc.

For me being able to add multi window support for any app, on the fly is reason enough!
That was the reason for me.
Do it and test out the multi window app on the store.

Here is the biggest reason why you should not root....... Because rooting will void your warranty.
Everyone says just use Triangle Away and reset, well that is all fine but If it needs to go in for repairs because it will not restart or hangs at start screen you will be sorry.
I would play with your note for a month or so before you root because there are many apps that let you modify your tablet without root.
Here are a few that I have used that can make your tablet look very cool and backup data without root.

For me........ I can not afford the risks that comes with rooting my $500.00 note 10.1.
I purchased my note for its great productivity ability and the s-pen option.
I do agree with you about the power and funtion that you get when you do root an android device, that is why I purchased a used kindle fire for $70 bucks and rooted it. The kindle fire has given me countless hour of entertainment loading many different ROMs, backing up the images, loading scripts and anything else that I could think of. I almost bricked it a few times also, some of my crafty experiments left me without the use of my tablet for hours at times and I came darn close to bricking the device for good a few times but was saved by XDA kindle pages and a micro usb dongle.
Yes, the power of root does become addictive and newbies need to be warned of the potential consequences and risks involved when rooting.

+1 for this. This was what did it for me. Other than that, I was already quite happy w/ the stock rom, so I kept it. I don't use it on this device, but you can also freeze or uninstall bloatware if you have root.

What if you run triangle away right after flashing a new ROM? That way if it bricks or hangs at the start screen, the flash count triangle will still be 0. Would that work? Is there really no way to remove the triangle through USB and a computer?

Triangle away will remove any counter trip. And if you're worried about rooting and warranties, you can just as easily unroot. Rooting can save you some headaches, since it's much easier to back up apps and such (titanium back-up, for one) and as you mentioned the ability to flash nice themes, such as kalagas.
I haven't flashed a custom rom yet, tho I have flashed Kalagas. Nice look!
Do some reading and enjoy your note, it's a great tablet with lots of potential to personalize it and make it your own. (check out some of the home screens in the Apps and Themes forum)

As stated in the Triangle Away Description on Google Play.
"Please also note that some devices set the counter to 1 at every boot if you are running a custom kernel or recovery. On these devices, Triangle Away may always display 1 - make sure to check the counter in actual download mode".

To Root or Not To Root?

Hi,
I am new here and I have some doubts on wether to root my 3 months old LG G2 d802. Can someone orient me what are the pros and cons, how to root and what are the things that I can do once rooted?

It depends on what are you trying to achieve with rooting.
Cons:
- you lose warranty
- if you don't know what you're doing with a rooted phone, you can cause more damage than good
- if you install malware and accidentaly grant it superuser (administrative) privileges, you can lose sensitive data or someone can mess up your phone
Pros:
- you can block ads on a system level
- you can remove unnecessary apps (bloatware, preinstalled carrier apps etc)
- you can visually modify your phone or add useful modules with Xposed framework
- you can save battery by hibernating apps you do not need to have in the background with Greenify
- you can flash a custom recovery which will allow you to make nandroid images (exact snapshots of your system which you can restore in case of problems)
- you can backup and restore apps and their data with Titanium Backup
- you can install custom kernels which allow overclock to make your phone's CPU even faster, or install custom ROMs which bring new looks and stuff (Cloudyfa's ROMs look nice) or revert to a pure Android experience with AOSP ROMs (like CyanogenMod)
Bottomline: if you don't need any of these things, you don't need to root your phone.

i always root my new android devices, too many pros in rooting

Im curious about this ROM thingy I thought I'd try to root for customization. But I'm still worried about the warranty. Anyway, I'll think about it. It does have a lot of pros but the cons can't be desregarded. Thanks man.

You can always go back to stock, remove root, remove custom recovery and re-lock boatloader!

I used to root all my phones but with these new phones I'm finding I don't need too.
The most I need is a God set of replacement launchers and those are everywhere.

It isn't worth it. There are no quality ROMs for this phone that work as well as the stock ROM. They make it look different and maybe that is cool to show off to your friends, but at the end of the day not a single ROM works as well as stock.
This phone is amazing, but was an absolute failure for the ROM market. Most of them are cobbled together, buggy, lacking features and not really any faster or better.
A ROM should make the phone better, and on many phones they can and do. But on this phone, none of them make it better.
Stick with stock, IMHO, especially if you are worried about your warranty.
If you want to customize how the phone looks and feels, there are a dozen really nice aftermarket launchers that you can install and completely transform how it looks and feels, without jacking anything up or risking a warranty issue...

Exactly. You can disable 90% of the bloat without root, right from the App Manager, and not have to worry about it hosing a future OTA.

I don't have that, I am on VZW.
I have tried about every ROM out there. I think that CM dropped the phone, there is no dev work really going on there. They all are buggy, none of them truly work as well as stock, etc...
I like ROMs when they actually make something better. Doing ROMs just for the sake of using a ROM, to me seems silly if they take away features, cause the phone to hang or reboot, don't give a performance improvement, cause volume or BT issues, etc...
When you can debloat a stock unrooted phone in less than 2 minutes, and install a launcher that radically changes how the phone looks and feels and lets you tailor it to your idea of how it should look, while keeping your warranty and not having to worry about not getting OTA's, it just makes sense to keep it stock...

I just bought a Verizon G2 on Swappa, so I did the towelroot thing (can't post links yet but I followed a guide posted on wonderhowto . com on how to root with towelroot).
I am basically fine with stock, just wanted to be able to mod it a little bit. For example, I've already changed the softkeys to my liking.
What I don't understand is the recovery/backup apps that I need to run, and in what order. For example, do I need to run AutoRec and/or TWRP if I am NOT going to install any custom roms? I'm not sure I completely understand this step of the process, or the order.
Basically, I'd like to install some mods, the camera mod, sound mods, ect, and would like a way to "restore" my phone (go back to its current state). Warranty is not an issue for me since I bought the phone used.

There are tons of things that you can do with a rooted phone.
When i first got my G2 5 months ago the first thing i did was root.
Here is a list of what i have now.
Rooted with TowelRoot (One click rooting APP)
Installed custom recovery(TWRP) with AutoRec
Stock Rom (AOSP Theme) found HERE
ROOT NEEDED:
Xposed Framework
G2 Xposed mods:
transparent nav bar and notif panel (no shadows)
4th nav bar icon (recent apps)
removed carrier lable on lock screen
removed some notification icons to clean t up
long press menu button to lock phone
bleed immersive mode
long press volume up button for flashlight (while locked)
OTHER Xposed Mods
Instagram downloader(ads download option to instagram app)
wifi password viewer(show password of saved wifi connections)
extended power menu(allows to reboot in recovery and other neet features)
google play music(will open play music to the specific tab you desire)
Other things
Native Hotspot Hack (free wifi tether)
Screen cast screen recorder
This is all i have for now because i am trying to keep it simple.
There are many other things i did not mention that can be done with a rooted phone
Not to mention all the awesome roms you can install.

You can always factory reset to show like never been rooted.

I've been using and making custom roms for several years starting back in the Windows Mobile days on the xv6700 and can honestly say this is the first device that I haven't wanted to put a custom rom on. The stock touchwiz UI and included/available samsung software is really polished and the battery life is incredible. I obviously rooted it and fixed a bunch of minor annoyances with xposed framework, but aside from that I don't think I'm going to make/flash a rom unless sprint gets really behind on future android builds.
Anyone else feel the same way?

No. I'd like to try cm or a smoother rom. I get lag on stock.

I agree with the OP on the smoothness... and also with you that a rom or two eventually would be nice.. but how are you getting lag?
Stock Rooted with Xposed and a minor build.prop edit and i have no lag what so ever. Sometimes the phone actually moves faster than what my thumbs were expecting. Just curious.

I should be more specific. The lag tgat I experience is in either Google hangouts, Google now search and sometimes when switching apps from the app switcher. The lag in hangouts and Google search is when I type I gets lots of lag. I've tried different keyboards and they all lag. I've had this same issue on the Note 3 and it only went away when I switched to cm11 for the note 3.

Ah. Gotcha. I always remove Hangouts and i dont bother with the Google Voice/Search. Maybe someone else can shed some light on the issue.

I'm a fan of touchwiz. Like others I get the occasional lag but it isn't nearly as earth shattering as Samsung haters make it out to be.
Xposed has also become my weapon of choice for fixing minor annoyances.
Also I don't use google search but did get a little bit of lag in Hangouts. My problem was the LG G3 keyboard I installed. Since removing it, I haven't noticed the lag as much.

Lolliipop keyboard works fine woth no lag. Never use Hangouts. This 2-3 second lag on the recent apps that some ppl report , i have not experienced. Once i edited build prop after xposed ive encountered no lag anywhere. None. And the battery life is superb.

I think the wanam option under 'security hacks' to 'disable secure storage' fixes the lag too (I believe it basically has the same effect as the build prop edit).
So just install xposed, then the wanam module and go turn on the setting.

Above poster makes sense. When youre in Wanam and making your device, 'Official' under Security Hacks, just change it from there amd disregard link.

exactly what do I need to change?? are we talking about changing the "build prop edit" and if so.. what should I change it to?? and how do I get "there"?
thanks all... as you can tell... Im a novice whose changed a few ROMS and rooted and installed recoveries..
BUT, never did any build prop changes.

Ok. Disregard the disregarding of the link and follow instructions found on the page the link takes you. It will tell you what to edit via Fx Explorer in build.prop

Ok thanks.... well.. I got it rooted.. and TWRP'ed
And Wanam and X'posed'..
then went to wanam option under 'security hacks' to 'disable secure storage'
Now.. Ill run this for a while and see how the lag is and any better battery life.

To root or not to root?

UPDATE: Just got a conversation with CS in my country. It seems that the article provided by sir gnmmarechal is 100% confirmed. Here are screenshots of our conv.

Hey guys, so the question is simple. Should I or should I not? At least not for a month or two.
I've had this habit of tripping knox after 1-2 months of use ever since the Galaxy S5. But now I've been missing all my purchased root apps and especially the v4a. However, what I'm worried about are those few issues poppin out after some time like what happened with the S7e. So I'm torn between rooting or not.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
Edit: So here are the few things you guys have shared (so far):

* TitaniumBackup Alt: Helium
* Adaway alt: Adhell. Also, samsung's own browser now supports extensions and you can download an adblock for it.

* doubletap statusbar to lock: none

I didn't have Samsung since S6 which was disaster, then I had two iphones: 6s and recently 7 respectively. Now I moved back to Samsung, as I bought S8. Personally, I find rooting useless at least for now. There aren't any major/valuable tweaks available around. Unless you really want that V4A (which is overrated in my opinion), then don't root it. I rooted my S6 after about 3 months. What I would really like to see is a stereo mod that would enable front speaker to play music.

What I actually miss really are Root Explorer, Adblock, V4A, Titanium Backup. After switching to this new phone, I can't handle those ads constantly annoying me everytime I press something on my screen when browsing. Haha

This is a great article, I also got on different conversation before regarding this. Some are claiming that they are still able to claim their warranty after tripping knox (like the artile also said) just as long as the issue is not related to it but some says differently so I'm not confident enough with the claims. Let me try to ask the CS here in my country.

Root Explorer - The My Files App isn't that bad. Only thing you really miss is the ability to edit root folders, which what do you need that for?
Adblock - AdHell on Samsung Galaxy Store. Uses Knox to block all ads on your phone. No need for rooting for this anymore.
V4A - can't help you here
Titanium Backup - Samsung and Google do a pretty good job of backing up all my apps. Only thing I really lose is the data from the apps.
All in all I don't root anymore due to the best abilities of the phones coming with everything I have wanted. Sure, I could customize a slight bit more with a rooted phone, but the downsides of rooting - being a flashaholic, worrying about tripping hardware mines, bad ROMs, bootloop, etc. - are enough to make me stay away now. I get everything I want from the Samsung phone the way it is now.

True. Did you take advantage of the Disconnect offer when it was free? It works great on the S8. Blocks all ads for me.

Nevermind, apparently the one we can download from galaxy apps is outdated, just updated adhell from playstore and now I can activate it. Haven't tested it yet tho.

I have been rooting for years. Now the only reason I would do that is Beats Audio. Much, much better than V4A

This posts was what i've been looking for...I haven't pulled the trigger on the S8 because i'm still debating to get snapdragon or go international with exynos. My main concerns for root were adblock, titanium backup, and the lack of ability to do a nandroid backup. I've been searching for good alternatives

im under the same dilemma of whether to root or not, i have rooted all my previous phones from the s2,3,4,5,6 and the s7 edge. Now im actually considering not rooting this phone. The main things i used to root the phone for were
1) adblock - but as mentioned im going to try adhell when i get the phone
2) Titanium backup - Havent found a great alternative for this however a few people have recommend Helium
3) GameGuardian - Cant help but hack pvz2 and others when they keep asking you for money for gems/coins
4) Xposed - a)Currently using a mod for the AOD on the s7 edge which lets me set custom pictures on the phone which is amazing,
b) XtouchWiz to auto expand my audio group when pressing the volume button, havent found a replacement for this either.
But rooting would cost me the Iris scanner(need this thanks to the horrible position of the fingerprint sensor) and samsung pay(not that big a deal) and of course warranty.

I would say if you don't have to "don't root." My main reason for rooting is to get my mother language (font) on my galaxy which usually is only done by root + ifont.

I've come from a rooted Nexus 6P. I still use Power Toggles because it allows one touch location switching. I also use Lux and Llama for automation. Anyone know of good alternatives without root?

You can now set a picture of your choice on AOD - but if you mean behind the clock, that is not yet possible. Though still nice to be able to use your own photos.
Also, the volume rocker now at least lets you choose whether it controls the ringtone or media by default. I changed mine to media as I set the ringer to a specific volume and normally leave it that way, but media I change all the time.

yes but nothing like what i have right now. Currently I have a folder with images and it changes the image automatically every 1 hour. Also all notifications that come in scroll on the bottom of the screen not just a stupid icon of whatsapp.

Please download adhell from Google Play.
