I've been using and making custom roms for several years starting back in the Windows Mobile days on the xv6700 and can honestly say this is the first device that I haven't wanted to put a custom rom on. The stock touchwiz UI and included/available samsung software is really polished and the battery life is incredible. I obviously rooted it and fixed a bunch of minor annoyances with xposed framework, but aside from that I don't think I'm going to make/flash a rom unless sprint gets really behind on future android builds.
Anyone else feel the same way?
No. I'd like to try cm or a smoother rom. I get lag on stock.

I agree with the OP on the smoothness... and also with you that a rom or two eventually would be nice.. but how are you getting lag?
Stock Rooted with Xposed and a minor build.prop edit and i have no lag what so ever. Sometimes the phone actually moves faster than what my thumbs were expecting. Just curious.
I should be more specific. The lag tgat I experience is in either Google hangouts, Google now search and sometimes when switching apps from the app switcher. The lag in hangouts and Google search is when I type I gets lots of lag. I've tried different keyboards and they all lag. I've had this same issue on the Note 3 and it only went away when I switched to cm11 for the note 3.
Ah. Gotcha. I always remove Hangouts and i dont bother with the Google Voice/Search. Maybe someone else can shed some light on the issue.

I'm a fan of touchwiz. Like others I get the occasional lag but it isn't nearly as earth shattering as Samsung haters make it out to be.
Xposed has also become my weapon of choice for fixing minor annoyances.
Also I don't use google search but did get a little bit of lag in Hangouts. My problem was the LG G3 keyboard I installed. Since removing it, I haven't noticed the lag as much.
Lolliipop keyboard works fine woth no lag. Never use Hangouts. This 2-3 second lag on the recent apps that some ppl report , i have not experienced. Once i edited build prop after xposed ive encountered no lag anywhere. None. And the battery life is superb.

I think the wanam option under 'security hacks' to 'disable secure storage' fixes the lag too (I believe it basically has the same effect as the build prop edit).
So just install xposed, then the wanam module and go turn on the setting.

Well here's my two cents...gps lock is not fixed...root is currently impossible to retain with the stock kernel. You need some kind of modified kernel to keep root. Keyboard lag is still present unless your rooted and install a fix.
These above listed items do have remedies, however they require a custom rom or multiple patches to fix.
That being said...if you always run stock there are no additional negatives. Gingerbread is much faster, smoother and cleaner imo. Take it from there.
Here's a link to all the advancements thus far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19155759

I think both of these statements are wrong based on my experience.
I have root and have no modified kernel. I think you can keep root without a fix, what you can't keep is a custom recovery program (like CWM).
I have had no keyboard lag so far. If it is there, it is definitely MUCH better than the previous version.

I have backup with Mybackup and Titanium, so I am more than happy with my backup options. ROOT itself is very important to me (and a lot of other people), so given the option I would rather have root and no custom recovery program, as opposed to a custom recovery program and no root.
A very important distinction to make.

No, just unnerving that they'd have such a forceful recovery program. Samsung has been sneaking little locks in things lately. Odin can break them but it's frustrating that they've gone down this road.

there really is no point in staying on froyo ec05 now. the only thing i could think of that would keep me on it would be SRF1.2 but since you didnt mention she had that i would say just update it for her. Things are quicker, snappier. The OS is built to be more stable and just all around better for the phone than the froyo version was.

Keyboard works so damn well!! Seriously its never worked this well for me. I'm running the deodexed build with nubernel so I dunno if there are any key lag hack built in or not.
Cd's or tapes?
My main beef with my phone has been fixed with this update. Music playback was annoying. Didn't matter if it was stock player or PowerAmp, I would get a weird hiccup at about 3 seconds into every song. On top of that, I could hear some electrical crackling when doing certain things while listening to music, especially while using wired tether. Gingerbread has eliminated it and music playback has been flawless for me all day so far. Not even a little click when the screen goes on/off anymore.
No doubt this phone still needs to be rooted with some patches just to make it useable. I'm disappointed samsprint took this long and still left so many of the original issues that shipped with the phone on eclair.
Basically it has the exact same widgets and touchwiz as always but with the underlying os updated to gingerbread.
I was hoping we would get the sgs 2 version of tw with the new widgets, and see the keyboard, and gps working out of the box.
Also the browser is pissing me off. It removed the zoom buttons and double tap isn't zooming in anymore...?
Its not all bad. With the gps fix (flashed in cwm) I'm getting better gps locks than ever before on this phone. Also the system as a whole is a bit faster. Unfortunately you will still make tradeoffs by updating.
Edits:
Tap to zoom works on non-mobile websites in the browser. Using my /data hack I was able to change default text size also.
Notification LED does in fact appear to be fixed...but there is a very long time between blinks (something like 20 seconds), would be much happier with a 2 sec blink. It is so slow, I thought it was not working.

Can we assume you don't want to go all in and install TWRP and a ROM like Cleanrom 1.1? Do you want to keep it completely stock, just with root?
Since you're rooted, I would at least remove the so-called bloat apps put there by the carrier by using a script that will remove it. That would be found in the development section of the G2 forum.
Better yet would be to install TWRP and then go for CleanROM 1.1 which does the debloating and much more.
In addition, there are a few UI tweaks that are nice and can be found around the forums. I suggest poking around these forums while it's still small and seeing what might strike your fancy.
To recap:
1. Root
2. TWRP --> then good idea to backup
3. CleanROM 1.1 or at least a debloat script which will remove junky carrier apps
4. Remove softkeys
5. Tweak UI stuff ( remove brightness slider/volume slider/shrink notifications/navigations/ that sort of thing ) -- search forums for the tweaks you like
6. Turn off Carrier IQ -- there is a thread for G2 that shows how
7. Xposed Framework -- not totally necessary at this stage but why not take a look, eh?
For myself, the first six are a must. But, the first five I recommend since you already turned to the dark side by getting rooted. :highfive:
If any of this is too vague please read some basics, do some googling, then ask some questions in the appropriate sections of the forums.
Good luck and have fun!

Hi everyone,
Just got my G2, D802 today. It got released in India, the country I belong to, today. The phone is brilliant, no doubt about that. The first few things negatives I have experienced in the first couple of hours of use are:
1. The phone earpiece is not up to the standards of a flagship, its week.
2. The same has to be said about the phone speakerphone.
I'd love to hear the experience of everyone else using the device.
I'd like to root the device & get rid of the bloatware as well.

Hi Buddy,
I am from Durgapur, West Bengal. Purchased the phone from the Distributor directly who billed the phone to one of his dealers who in turn billed the phone to me. The phone is 32GB Version. I paid INR.42300.00
By Bloatware I mean the unwanted features/apps for me like the LG Smart World app, Slide Aside feature & then the QSlide feature. I want a minimal ROM on my phone so that I can enjoy maximum free RAM & system resources which are you know eaten up by these apps & features.

Now after many of you guys who could have the tablet already were able to root and remove your bloat , so after rooting and being able to customize your tablet and DPI etc. how is it with the tablet going for you ? Would appreciate you sharing your experience so far
p.s ... this baby will cost a solid 1000$ in my country for LTE model .
It's definitely more responsive after freezing a bunch of unnecessary (for me anyway) applications.
For me my primary reason for purchasing was for s-pen in a large form factor. Based on that I expected to just de-bloat and use stock s-pen applications. I have no interest in any other Android tablet at this time.
Question is sort of odd though; I wouldn't expect a lot of people to have gone through the hard decision of rooting such an expensive device and then say they felt it wasn't worth it.

well its not that odd bc its not just about the money etc its about the whole experience etc and what could you get out of the tablet with the more real estate and i have seen some people regretting buying it etc. am a junior architect and i was waiting for something that big to use it with the s-pen too .. in my place you wouldn't be able to resell the tablet if you didn't like it or didn't get what you expect from it etc even i watched many reviews about it and sounds pretty interesting the limitations around me makes me have some concerns thats it
Right, my point is the "is it worth it" evaluation for a person who has rooted their device will have already occurred before rooting so of course you'll get more responses in the affirmative. I suppose it's not impossible that some will chime in to say that even after rooting it's unacceptable. ...perhaps odd is the wrong thing to say...just don't expect a majority of people who have rooted to tell you that they wish they hadn't.

It's sometimes good to freeze (at least as a test-bed) because some apps no matter how innocuous they may seem could be an integrated part of the system. Removing them might break functionality within other apps or even the system itself. For example, on some systems if you remove the pre-installed file manager because you prefer another (Solid Explorer RULES!), it might break the Gallery app which could interfere with setting wallpapers even from other apps. That example - from my phone.
I want root to address the following things...
1. Remove multiwindow application restrictions
2. Use LMT or similar launcher for home, back, menu, etc.
3. Change the DPI (smaller icons, more real estate).
4. Backup/restore with Titanium Backup
5. freeze/remove system apps/bloat.
6. Install AOSP browser w/Flash
Rooting I noticed nothing different. I installed xposed and wanam to get the things I like. The main thing that changed was I lost the symbols on my keyboard. I can still get them by hitting the sym key, but can't long press the letter keys to get the symbol. It doesn't matter what language it's set to, they are not there.
Also, my video player developed an issue when it set to fullscreen. Lines through it and very choppy.
So I have un installed wanam and exposed, and video is normal, but still no symbols. Had them out of the box.
Thinking about Un rooting to see if it fixes the issue on the keyboard.

4.4 will not support flash I've experienced. Let us know if you get that working.

I did try that with same results, I should have said that. I thought that would solve that too. With wanam and exposed uninstalled, I still can't get it back.

That's strange. I have Wanam installed and my keyboard is unchanged.

Right.....I think it happened upon root. Didn't notice it right away. Root is the only thing left to try with out having to odin Stock and start again. I have removed wanam and still unable to get it back. Thanks for letting me know that it's possible with wanam though!

Tried that as well. It should be enabled without wanam as well. As in Stock rooted. Not sure why I don't have it anymore

Update: I reinstalled xposed before I Un rooted, which I will not be doing. Installed the alternate keyboard symbols module, and they are back. I'll try wanam again, but leave the current module running.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Back to the rooted fun.

Got flash working using a modded flash.apk and Dolphin browser with jetpack. Works great!

For me, personally, no device is "worth it" without root access. So, I guess you can put me down for a "worth it." An unrooted device just... feels... it just plain feels wrong, man. *shivers*

Hey guys,
Not sure if this forum is an appropriate place for general discussion/questions.... feel free to tell me to move along if it isn't.
I'm considering switching back to 4.4.2.... this 5.0 update has been less-than-stellar, in my opinion. I've got tons of issues with it, but probably the biggest is a very poor battery life.... the thing uses up all my RAM, and I'm lucky if I get a full day out of it. Also, it's very slow to respond at times, the auto-brightness feature doesn't work properly, as well as the known issues with 5.0 (the "missing" silent feature, for example.)
My question is: is everyone else having this experience, too? Or could I have had a bad install of 5.0? The ROM (I believe that's the right word... I am a n00b here, but I'm a quick study) I used was the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM... Have there been any issues with this ROM, not related to 5.0? I'd love some opinions on this.
Thanks!
Tony
Oh, and P.S.-- I'm not sure if 5.0.2 fixes any of these issues... if you guys could comment on that, I'd appreciate it too. Thanks again.

I messed with lollipop some. MOAR is a ROM you should try if you stay with lollipop. I'm sticking with 4.4.4. More theme friendly and stable in my opinion. Lollipop seems too buggy to me and I don't like the colors.

Is there any way to downgrade, and turn off the harassment from Google to upgrade?
Sometimes that will stop when you run a custom ROM. I'm running Ricks ROM. There is also a file you can freeze with titanium backup that will stop it. SDM or something like that. You have to get the paid version in order to freeze apps.
Edit: app is called Samsung software updates. You could also use root explorer and find that same app in your system/priv-app folder and rename it (put .bak on the end of it).

freeze: SDM 1.0
no more system updates , if you change your mind unfreeze it and the updates option will reappear in your settings list

I echo his advice. Just buy Tibu Pro Key from the play store and freeze it. It's not like it is expensive or anything, well worth a couple bux to be able to freeze all sorts of bloat ware actually.

Installing went fine and I've gotten things running. There are two major bugs despite their post saying "100% stable".
1) You cannot change the wallpaper in the settings. While I was able to change the home screen wallpaper with Nova launcher, I have not found a way to change the lock screen wallpaper. It will be stuck with the wallpaper of the custom boot image.
2) This rom is PLAGUED with "your device isn't compatible with this version" on the play store. It's nearly impossible to download your apps without using marketspoofer constantly. As a result, you won't be able to get updates for these apps. I'm talking about snapchat, spotify, etc. It's bad.
I'd highly advise against using this Rom for the time being. I'm switching back to Xiaomi.eu and will apply the 4g fix manually.

The lockscreen wallpaper bug exists on almost all MIUI ROMs. This is because you are using a different launcher from the stock one. Even I use Nova Launcher. The workaround to change lockscreen wallpapers is simple.
Go to settings>Installed Apps>Defaults
Change default launcher to System Launcher. Then press the home key so that the system launcher loads up. Now you can change your lockscreen wallpaper successfully and once you've done that, you can change the default launcher back to Nova. Sadly, this is the only way to do it and this bug isnt new. Has been there since a while.
I havent tried the Epic ROM so I can't comment on the issue with Playstore incompatibility.

I don't have such problem. All my apps are getting updates normally including the one you have mentioned. I have never seen the device isn't compatible error message with this rom. Not sure is something I do or something you do that's causing this. Been using the epic rom for more than 2 days now, buttery smooth and very good ram and battery management. Haven't noticed anything wrong so far.
Not having any issues whatsoever. Got like 100 apps from play store.

I guess no one else is facing issues with installing apps via Playstore. Maybe something got messed up during the ROM installation. Try clean flashing and it may solve the issue.
OP should maybe edit the title, it's a bit misleading as it seems like it's an isolated case, perhaps a clean flashing would solve the problem he is facing. With our community being this small, this post won't get sink that easily and for new comers, EPIC rom is a fantastic custom ROM
I already reverted back and I don't intend to go back... I feel bad if I was the only one who had these issues. It's pretty frustrating let alone embarrassing. I would like to delete the thread, but I don't know if that's possible.

May be a coincidence,my personal set-up/apps disabled,IDK,but, I am now experiencing an issue similar to yours:
I have no problem loading or updating from the Google Play Store, but, I can no longer side-load apps. (Parsing Error)
I reverted to a GlobeROM backup that's based on the same update (7.1.5) & have no problems side-loading apps.

Interesting... I was able to install adaway, marketspoofer, xposed, etc fine. The ROM seems temperamental or just susceptible to isolated issues.

Another thing I forgot to mention was my Samsung Gear S2 wouldn't connect, the Gear Manager app crashed every time.
Works fine on EU & GlobeROM.
I'll try things out on the next EpicROM update, see if anything has changed, both as a dirty flash & starting from scratch.

I haven't tried EpicROM like I mentioned in another thread but I guess the reason some are experiencing issues with EpicROM is probably because the ROM has a lot of mods compared to the stock EU and Globe.
One of the mods I can recall is the Dolby Atmos sound mod. There are many other mods as well.
Hence dirty flashing the EpicROM may be the cause of the random issues. I assume the people who have no issues with Epic have done a clean install of the ROM.
This is one of the reasons why I don't prefer custom roms with a lot of mods. I always prefer having a base rom like EU and then manually modifying it to my requirements. That way I have a control over the mods and also helps me narrow down the cause of any issues that may arise.

I don't think epic rom has many mods (not yet at least). Actually the EU rom I installed has more mods than Epic, Epic has atom. My eu rom had arise viper, eu gps MOD, Dolby atom, scrolling animation MOD.
For me at least, I have only done dirty flash. So I came from clean 6.12.10 to 6.12.22 then to custom EU 6.12.29, then now custom Epic 7.1.5, all dirty from start.
That being said, I will see what epic provides on their next release. I may go back to custom EU as so far, I can't see any difference between them, but at least custom EU can select Arise and adaway pre-installed. Would save me 2 mins to install by myself.. Lol

I was referring to the weekly xiaomi.EU base ROM. I haven't noticed any mods on this ROM. I can confirm that there is no viper or dolby atmos because I don't see it anywhere in the ROM. I may be wrong and there may be some under the hood mods. But I haven't noticed anything so far.
I guess you may be referring to the MiGlobe ROM. Because nothing other than Gapps came pre-installed with the base EU ROM I am running.
