[Q] Acer A500 tablet will not boot - Acer Iconia A500

I'm having an issue with my tablet: it is stuck on "booting recovery image". I can boot into safe mode and have performed a factory reset. I cannot perform a hard reset per Acer video instructions - it just boots into safe mode. I have tried to put an "update.zip" file onto an SD card, in which case it gets stuck in a reboot loop.
After talking to Acer support and paying the $80 for their support service since my tablet is out of warranty, they tried the following:
- told me to press the key combination that I knew led to the hard reset, without warning me that it is a hard reset and without listening to me that it does not work. Surprise surprise, it did not work, tablet booted into safe mode.
- gave me an update.zip file directly from Acer to put onto an SD card. Email me if you want a copy, it is too big to attach here. It made things worse for me actually: now it does not even load safe mode. This is not to say that it won't work for you though.
After these two steps they told me it must be a hardware issue and that I should send it in.
If anyone here has any suggestions beyond the exhaustive research I've already tried that would be much appreciated. I just also wanted to post this as a warning to anyone who tries to go to them for support and actually pays money for it - IT IS NOT WORTH IT. All the info they have is right here on the forum. At the end of my rope I thought I should try, and there it is.

Run babsector file in my root guide linked in my Sig. Post 2, instructions are there also. Pls post output if u receive an error

[Q] Please have mercy.

My Acer a500 is in a "unique" boot loop. When I power it on I get ACER, ANDROID, it boots to the regular interface, then freezes after 2 seconds and restarts. I've already tried Hard Reset. Power plus volume down I get a friendly android with a yellow triangle and an exclamation point. Please help...
There's nothing unique about your bootloop at all. There are dozens of threads about virtually the same thing, and the solution is ALWAYS the same so use the search function.
Download an FOTA ROM from the clearly labelled thread and follow the instructions to flash it. If you get the exclamation mark, the problem is your SD card. Reformat it or try another one.
N.O.K
I need a detailed description with what I need to do.
I have an sd card.
I have the acer update decrypter.
I may have to reformat my sd card.
If I do need to reformat my sd card, how do i do that?
FOTA
I downloaded the FOTA ROM, uploaded to sd card, tried to flash, no good. I need a bullet.
yeah, recovery image is bad. I used to get the exclamation mark myself but then I had to use the acer recovery image and install the cwm recovery image. When it tried to identify my old one it couldnt because it was bad. I even tried a master reset and had it rooted and all that. Its possible that rooting the device caused the issue, but i am not sure. The best thing to do would be to try the reset button on the side. The truth is that you wont be able to enter recovery mode it seems.
I may be completely wrong here. I am no expert on this particular problem, just a lowly computer specialist that is more about smartphones than tablets haha. Try and search around as well and follow some of the steps listed in some of the other threads. The contributors here at XDA are awesome, and definitely worth being mine and many others primary landing page for modding, roms, etc.

Bricked my Acer a500

Hi there,
This is my first Android tablet, and was quite impressed. I did have one problem, and that was netflix not working with the tablet. Within 5 hours of opening the box it came in, I bricked my a500. It was trying to flash the tablet with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178773 , since other members said it worked, but I bricked my tablet. I used CWM Recovery to flash it (after rooting of course) and I think the settings made it go to a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Setting, but I didn't know that I had hit it instead of hitting back. I flash the update, and the tablet bricks. I get a LNX checksum error every time I try to boot, and I have tried installing OTA as well as other update methods, such as sc2k's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129873 and http://androidforums.com/acer-iconia-tab-a500/345419-un-brick-acer-iconia-tab-a500.html . None of the above have helped, as every time I try to install any of the update.zip from a microSD card, the Android loading screen stops about a 1/4th way through and I'm left with a Yellow Warning sign. Any help would be appreciated. To be left with a bricked pad within 5 hours of receiving it is pretty depressing, and I would like to enjoy this for as long as it lasts. (I thought it would be like PSP custom firmware modding, but sadly i was wrong)
Might try this. The key is to get to a download mode and then flash.
On a droid charge for example, hold vol button down (with battery out) and then plug USB into laptop.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/samsung-fascinate-development/88657-if-you-think-you-bricked.html
Sadly, that guide is for phones/ samsung, so I don't know what to do from there.
Maybe if I have a copy of the latest firmware, that might work. Seeing as I just got it today, it might work if I use the latest firmware (I also updated it today as well)
are you able to hold vol down and boot into cwr ?
Maybe you can find something usefull there :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086785&page=4
first of all I don't really understand what you did.
second, the download update.zip is for asus eeepad instead of acer iconia
if ever you have a problem with an acer iconia product, i would suggest you should use a stock acer iconia 3.1 rom.
you can find it in the dev section
also don't forget to get the zip decryption tool, you can also find it in the dev section.
then once decryption is done, extract the update.zip and put it on the external sd card (which i hope you have)
once on it put the card into the appropriate place in the acer iconia
then you hit volume+ (volume plus) and the power button until it restarts. after release the power button but keep you finger int the volume+ until you see a message that it is formatting data cache etc..
then you are back to stock ACER and you take it from there to patch.b don't even try to use any other type of ROM since you don't seem to be to experienced.

[Q] Acer iconia A500 Tablet wont go into recovery mode

I have had my acer iconia tablet for 2 months.
I am a total noob when it comes to rooting, flashing or installing new roms on any android device. Never done anything like it.
My tablet just boot loops and all i get is "green android icon holding a yellow triangle with an exclamation point".
What can i do. I have seen a youtube video of a user holding down the volume down + power key and he is presented with a menu to factory reset and cache resetting and all that good stuff. I do not get any of that. Any help would be appreciated.
the menu that you seen in the video. was likely CWM RECOVERY. You do not have that menu due to the fact you do not have a custom recovery installed. the android with exclamation leads to believe you have acer recovery. Its limited Only able to flash a ACER Signed update.zip only .
Reply back with exactly what you did with details about rom version and so on . So someone can better help you. To get the right help we need to know how you broke it..
At this point Do not do anything until you know you are doing the correct fix for your situation.. You are NOT Bricked.. you just have a bad UPDATE.ZIP FILE OR Bad format on your sd card..
Help is close by..
To be honest i really do not know what rom version was used. Like i mentioned before. I myself have never rooted or altered an android device.
From where you are right now in a boot look .. where do you want to end up.. ROOTED ... STOCK TO WHERE YOU can accept the acer OTA. when they push them..
sounds like you may be able to reset the tablet withe hole next to the usb port.. You have to push quite hard to get it to push the Button..
Im guessing due to the lack of information you are providing.. Sorry..
Thanks for your help. The darn thing is still doing the same thing. Guess i got to do a little more research.
If you're asking for help you need to describe what actions exactly you have taken in order to reach this state (as Erica suggested) of your tab. From your post 1 thing is clear - your tab is unable to boot, but what has been modified before remains a mystery.

Yeah, probably my guess, is you tab started to do an OTA update, and as in a lot of cases, it failed. And you're stuck with where you are now.
If using the pinhole reset near the PWR button doesn't work (a hard reset), then I suggest ;
1. Make sure your tab is charged.
2. Go to this thread, and select one of the rom update packages.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Use one of the HC 3.2 update files near the end. Note that the Megaupload file no longer works.
Note that some of the packages are encrypted, so you will need to use the "decrypt" tool he has listed there in his 1st post. Copy it to PC, run it, select your encrypted rom, and let it do it's thing. This will give you the same rom, only states "decrypted" at the end of the file name.
4. Open the rom using Winzip or 7zip. Remove the update.zip (do not extract the contents of it), and copy it to the SD card (replacing a current update.zip if there's one there).
5. Holding either Vol- press and hold PWR. This should force the tab to install that update.zip (you should see some text on the screen, then you can release both buttons. Hopefully it will install.
Post back results please.

Be patient. Try later. Vach's server is probably overloaded due to the leaked ICS Rom.
You only need to get 1 of the A500 update roms. It's actually a fully signed rom in the file "update.zip" Just decrypt rom you the original rom you downloaded using the instructions, use winzip or 7zip to open the decrypted rom, remove the update.zip and copy it to your sd card.
And Then?

Hi,
did u succeed?
Rgds,
trying to recover A500 - boot recovery failed
Hi - I'm trying to reset and recover my son's A500 tablet. I copied one of the HC 3.2 Update.zip files to a microSD card, then held down Power and Volume - buttons. As long as I hold down the Volumn down buttin, the tablet seems to be stuck in a never ending cycle of loading the update and booting recovery image kernal, then restarting, then loading the update.zip file and booting recover image kernal, etc.... If I let go of the Volume Down button, I get in red letters "Boot Verification Failed" message, and it stops.
im trying to help fix an a500 tablet. apparently the tablet gets stuck at the acer logo. when i hit power and the volume button i get some lettering in the top letft. I took the advice here and went and downloaded one of the HC 3.2 updates. copied the update.zip onto the root of the Sd card and then put it back in. I hit the same buttons again and the letters came up. so i assumed things were working. all of a sudden i get an android with a blue diagram in its belly (kind of like it was loading) and then it froze. after waiting for a second I got a second android that popped on the screen and this one is laying on its back with its chest open and a red triangle is showing....So I don't know exactly what I did wrong here. Any help would be appreciated. I am not exactly sure what he did to mess it up. I believe he was trying to install a custom rom and did not go about it correctly and therefore messed up an update and now he has nothing. so im not sure what to do exactly.

I to have had the same problem with my Acer Iconia A500. I followed the instruction and booted the Acer...got to the screen with the Android robot standing upright with the spinning in his stomach...goes to about 1/4 of the way and doesn't go any further....looks like it's trying to continue but has been at the same place for over an hour. Do I need a different rom perhaps?? I used A501.000.00_4.037.01.emea_tmp

Well, you can try this. Below are links to update.zip files already decrypted on my server. I have renamed them, only so you can keep them separate. You will have to change the name to "update" (update.zip) and copy one to ext sd card. Reboot holding Vol (+ or -) and PWR. See if they install. You may have to try each until one installs as there is no way to predict which one will work.
http://d-h.st/KXl
http://d-h.st/gw8
http://d-h.st/2cm
http://d-h.st/Zf8
This is probably the easiest method to try first.
MD
the "41-125-03-update.zip" seem to work for me. The status bar finally is showing but it doesn't seem to be moving. It moved to 1/4 of the bar and it stayed there. Last time it did this, it stayed there for over 2 hrs. I hope it's working this time. Anything else I could try?
My tablet was working fine and I left it there to go to work, coming back I found it on the Acer logo. Many search brought me here.
update ========
tried and tried and tried.......a few times that the status bar did come up, many times it stuck at around 25%. A few times it got all the way to 75% of the bar. It refuse to go farther when I left it there all night. It finally died when the battery was complete drain.
Acer A500 Stuck on ACER Logo (not rooted) finally fixed!
Just wanted to post some positive things for a change. My ACER A500 tablet (not rooted and running ICS 4.0.3) was working fine two months ago and I wanted to watch an ESPN3 football game on the tablet which I then hooked to my HD TV via the HDMI cable. For about an hour, all was fine then the tablet did an uncommanded reboot and then I had the android figure with an opened belly followed by an android laying on it's side with an exclamation mark. On the next restart, my tablet would not pass the ACER logo screen. After reading many posts with the stuck ACER logo, I was not sure how to proceed exactly. I have rooted a 7 inch tablet last year but I could not get my act together on the exact steps to revive my tablet. Finally I came across this post with the ACER ROMs already decripted which removed many questions I had about the exact steps to create an "update.zip" file for my SD card. Based on just downloading the file from your web site and renaming the file to "update.zip" and moving a copy to a formatted SD card, I was ready to try the process to load another ACER file to my tablet. On my first attempt, I tried the file named "206-03" based on a guess of the naming convention used or maybe blind luck. I preformed the PWR button and Vol down button combination with the "update.zip" file on the micro SD inserted in my tablet. The tablet started with three lines of text and then the android figure with it's door open and activity inside the android. This screen stayed then with a completion bar followed by a large text screen warning not to turn off tablet. After about 15 minutes total, my tablet was alive with a request to select my country. Bottom line, taking the steps to put the decripted file on your server and the simple button combination to start the reload process allowed me to get my tablet working great running ICS 4.0.3. I just wanted to post a success story and follow up. Thank you Moscow Desire for taking the extra steps to help the uneducated user!
Anyway I can check if my ROM hardware are working properly? I have tried all the update.zip and all of them show a dead android at the end. I can't even tell if it read from the microSD.

Acer A200 Bricked - Can't Recover

Hello. I have an Acer Iconia Tab A200, and recently I tried a factory reset. However, due to my meddling with system files, it won't reset.
I've tried to do a hard reset (Power on, Volume+, Orientation lock switch) but it says the following:
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
It then reboots, and does nothing. It hangs on the Acer logo.
When trying to go into recovery (Power On, Volume-), it says the following:
Erasing Cache before SD update...
SD update cmd: recovery
--update_package=SDCARD:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified fail ...
Now, I mentioned that I meddled with the System Files. Here is what I did:
1. Removed unwanted Vendor Apps
2. Removed the DEFAULT LAUNCHER <-- I think this plays a big part in this
3. Placed a CUSTOM LAUNCHER in the VENDOR APPS FILE
4. Did a FACTORY RESET
My brother is more techy than me, so he tried to fix it. However, he somehow re-locked the bootloader and even replaced the bootloader with a newer version.
I talked to Acer Support claiming it's system files corrupted itself, but they won't fix it unless I also pay to fix my cracked screen. I'm willing to do so, but hey, I'd like to see if I could save $120. I don't mind the cracked screen.
NOTES:
The Acer Iconia Tab A200, along with their other tablets, has a USB port. I can probably load stuff from there somehow, but not sure.
It is a 16GB model with a 32GB Class 10 MicroSD card in it.
Any ideas? All help is appreciated.

Do you have access to any a200 Update roms? Sometimes, you can pull the update.zip from the rom, place it on your ext sd card, reboot holding Vol+ and PWR, and it might install.

I have searched for some A200 ROMs, but can't find any that work using that method. I'm open for ANY Acer A200 official ROM, then simply updating using OTA. I tried an Acer A200 Recovery Pack I found. It is the exact stock Honeycomb image, but it didn't go. It always says recovery verified fail. I cannot unlock the BootLoader either.
Stockimage flashable while having bricked /DATA Partition
Hi Vuciz,
do you still have the issue with your bricked A200 ?
I got the same problem with mine, the only solution was to send it to repair, it seems the storage controller chip has some bug which destroyed the /DATA partition unrecoverable.
if you need to revert your Tablet to an locked bootloader you have to download an StockRom and modify it by removing the partition check (called "assert") in the update script.
please send me an message if you need further assistance.
regards and good luck with your tab.

I also have this tablet. I bought it for 20 bucks because the screen was cracked. replaced the screen and then found out that the bootloader was trashed. I've done almost everything I can think of to fix it. Used APX mode to get UID from ubuntu, tried to use that UID to get sbk, got the SBK and then tried using blackthunder's tool got connection failure, tried using babsector same thing, even went in ubuntu, with tablet in manual apx mode for all three and when I attempt to reflash the bootloader, all I get is that command failure message with a nvflash connection failed nv error 0x30011 message and when that happens in windows, the tablet disappears from device manager, and in ubuntu when I run nvflash with the sbk function --sbk XXXX and so on, I get the command sent failure message, and then when i rerun lsusb, the nvidia device that represents my tablet in apx mode that showed before is no longer listed unless i reboot the tablet in apx mode again. If i boot it normally, the acer logo appears and then goes to the little animation and then the iconia tab screen and thats it. I've tried attempting to flash the bootloader from that screen which i know probably wasn't going to work anyways. If anyone has any advice on something I've missed, or anything that could help, i'll all eyes. thanks in advance.

[Q] A500 Boot Issues...need assistance

I've searched and found a few similar (not identical) problems that people were having, and tried some of the solutions, and none have worked.
I'm trying to fix this stock Acer A500 for a friend. It will boot up part way, goes past the acer screen and android screen, but then stops at a black screen with 'android system' in the upper left corner, the home and back buttons in the bottom left, and the time, signal, and battery life logos in the bottom right. Then there's the Power Off thing in the center of the screen, and it says shutting down but it never shuts down.
I boot into the stock recovery mode, and it says in the upper left on the acer screen:
erasing cache before SD update
SD update cmd: recovery
--update_package=sdcard:update.zip
booting recovery kernel image
then it shows the android with the turning gears, then goes straight to the android with the warning symbol.
Since I can't get into the OS, i have no idea which version or specific model this is, but i downloaded a few different honeycomb update.zips, and put those on the SD card, and when i tried booting with those, the loading bar pops up under the android logo, and it goes to about 1/3 of completion before switching back to the warning symbol.
I tried downloading what im pretty sure was a full version of jellybean for this tablet, and it went straight to the warning symbol, no loading bar. same when i tried renaming the file update.zip >.>
im clearly very new to all this, but i'd really like to get this thing working.
is there a way to do a factory reset without booting all the way into the OS?
im not sure because it seems like the only file its looking for in recovery mode is update.zip.
if anyone has any bright ideas, id appreciate the help.
Also, not sure if this is relevant, but when i boot it normally, and it goes to the 'shutting down' screen, the battery level indicator says its almost dead, but i can leave it plugged in for hours and nothing changes at all.
EDIT: Also, it won't even boot if the power cable is not connected.
Similar issue hope there is a solution
I have a similar problem. Tablet was working fine, sitting on docking station. Returned to it the next day and when I went to wake it, it would not wake. Rebooted it but will not reboot. Sits on the ANDROID screen after the ASUS title screen indefinitely. If I try and boot into recovery it fails at "update.zip" and I see the broken Android image laying there.
Is there a means to restore it from PC via the usb cable and can someone please post a very noob friendly walk through step-by-step?
Greatly appreciate any positive advice!
Probably the mmc failed. Same symptoms as mine. Non-recoverable.

Yep.. 14 months old in my case. Contacted Acer and said "what about a fix?" They said, "no chance unless you cross our palms with lots of silver."
So, bought a Samsung Note 10.1 instead. Acer can "stuff it". I won't be buying a tablet from them again. Considering that I bought their "flagship" product of the A501 with the 64GB memory, this is truly unacceptable.
I was incredibly careful with it and certainly never did anything to void the warranty. But, you only get 12 months and then it's over.

I wouldn't go as far as to say dead, have you tried booting into APX mode and then running BABsector?

Definitely more than I can manage but I've handed the tablet over to a friend who is capable of understanding and performing your suggestions. All are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey Skurtov,
Thanks for the offer to help my friend NoOneSpecific.
If my Android terminology is correct, APX mode is the diagnostic mode which invokes the Bootloader when a device specific combination is held while powering on, right? And while the Bootloader GUI is active, it is shown on a PC as an Nvidia device?
I believe the key combination on the A500 is Volume-Down and Power, but doing this causes the tablet to automatically boot from the recovery kernel image. The same message appears regardless of whether an SD card with a decrypted update.zip is present or not.
If I am mistaken, I would greatly appreciate your help in pointing me to the right step in getting my friend's tablet working again!
Cheers!

You are quite right sir, however the button combination I am most familiar with is holding the power and the reset button (the one you have to stick the paper clip in) when you first start it up. It should then either say APX mode on the screen or be blank, either way the computer will identify it as a APX device and automatically install the drivers.
Going into APX MODE manualy
You enter APX mode by holding down the Reset button(with paper clip). Do not release it. Hold down power for 3 secs and then release it. After another second, release the reset button.
Your Windows PC should then detect your device and install the APX driver. You should then have an APX USB device installed. If you do not have an APX USB device listed in your system tray, you cannot proceed.
The screen of your tablet is black.

The next course of action is to get the SBK, from what it sounds like the tablet didn't write a partition properly and that's why it's not booting. So what you can do is wipe out the partitions and install a custom bootloader and recovery. Not only does it fix things but it also opens up his world to custom roms . Okay, back to the matter at hand, I don't know if he has his SBK or not, and if he does skip the step to find it and just run babsector below. If not then follow the next step.
You'll have to pull the UID from the tablet using this method described here:
http://git.pappkartong.se/?p=a500/apxuid.git;a=snapshot;h=HEAD;sf=tgz
There's a readme
After getting the UID and calculating your SBK you'll just go to the next step.

Run this file hosted here:
http://narod.ru/disk/53919831001.a235ea2225f319015f30c009629d2075/BabSector.rar.html
And this file basically rewrites and formats the partitions out installs a custom bootloader and recovery
Credit goes to Danny2 for finding this and posting it.

Once this is done, pick a new rom. I prefer the Civato ones, load it on a SD, boot to recovery, erase dalvik cache, cache, do a factory reset wipe (from the recovery menu!), then wipe system, flash the rom and go on your merry way
Many thanks for the reply.
As per your instructions, I have booted the tablet into APX mode. However, as I do not know the UID of the device, I've had to try to run the utilities to create a driver for the device and then pull UID from the tablet...
I am able to create the driver for the device and install it with driver signing off in Windows, but I can't figure out how to run the script to get the UID. I notice the file in the package you directed me to contains an .SLN file, which would indicate it is a programming solution file. I have Visual Studio on my system but it cannot open this particular .SLN file.
How would I run what's in the package to pull out the UID of the tablet?
Any help getting past this hurdle would be much appreciated!
