[Q] Please have mercy. - Acer Iconia A500

My Acer a500 is in a "unique" boot loop. When I power it on I get ACER, ANDROID, it boots to the regular interface, then freezes after 2 seconds and restarts. I've already tried Hard Reset. Power plus volume down I get a friendly android with a yellow triangle and an exclamation point. Please help...

There's nothing unique about your bootloop at all. There are dozens of threads about virtually the same thing, and the solution is ALWAYS the same so use the search function.
Download an FOTA ROM from the clearly labelled thread and follow the instructions to flash it. If you get the exclamation mark, the problem is your SD card. Reformat it or try another one.

N.O.K
I need a detailed description with what I need to do.
I have an sd card.
I have the acer update decrypter.
I may have to reformat my sd card.
If I do need to reformat my sd card, how do i do that?

FOTA
I downloaded the FOTA ROM, uploaded to sd card, tried to flash, no good. I need a bullet.

yeah, recovery image is bad. I used to get the exclamation mark myself but then I had to use the acer recovery image and install the cwm recovery image. When it tried to identify my old one it couldnt because it was bad. I even tried a master reset and had it rooted and all that. Its possible that rooting the device caused the issue, but i am not sure. The best thing to do would be to try the reset button on the side. The truth is that you wont be able to enter recovery mode it seems.
I may be completely wrong here. I am no expert on this particular problem, just a lowly computer specialist that is more about smartphones than tablets haha. Try and search around as well and follow some of the steps listed in some of the other threads. The contributors here at XDA are awesome, and definitely worth being mine and many others primary landing page for modding, roms, etc.

frozen tablet after partial update, copied fron the wrong forum

original Post
Going Bald here. I have searched this forum and the more I am reading the more confused I am becoming.
After a partial update my Acer Iconia A 500 froze. I tried rebooting and it took me to the start up screen where the lock is and nothing. Frozen solid.
I got acer support and they told me to Hold the vol button while turning the power on for 3 seconds the turning the screen lock on off on off. I get a green robot with a yellow exclamation mark. I am guessing this is called bricked!
I purchased the Tablet at Best Buy in the USA and brought it home to Australia.
The Acer support wants me to send it in for repair and also says...quote "However, considering that your device has been flashed to the US firmware, there may be an issue with resetting the unit to Australian standards."
I have read about OTA and kernels Roms.... YIKES. Most say download the OTA for your tablet ( how do I know what one if I cant get into it)
Can some Guru here please explain in clear English what I should do. Where I should go. You guessed it total Newbie here. HELP
Thank you in advance
Answer from FLOATING FATMAN.....thank you
There are several things you can try.
First, on the right hand side of the device there's a little hole. This is a reset hole (but doesn't wipe RAM). Try pressing this. You might have to reset a couple of times. If that doesn't help, read further.
Next, the step they describe is to force a wipe of the device. But it depends which volume button you pressed. With the device in landscape mode, it needs to be the side of the rocker furthest from the power button. Hold both down, then when you get the text, release the (I think) power button only, and toggle the orientation lock a few times.
If THAT doesn't work, contact the user sc2k on these boards via PM and he may be able to help you recover your tablet.
Question. When you tried to update your ROM, was it with an official OTA? And did you use Clockworkmod? If you used CWM, did you use the custom one in the A500 section, or the one from the market. The one on the market WILL BRICK YOUR TABLET.
My answer
Tried the reset, tried the power button. To answer the question.. The update flashed up on the screen so I thought it was a normal update. ummm Clockworkmod???? I havent updated from the market. Didnt know you could.
I am totally lost and ignorant here. SC2K will you please help me.
Thank you
ClockworkMod is a recovery menu for rooted roms.If you have'nt rooted then no need to worry about that.Ok power off, hold the volume button down from the left side, turn on your tab while holding down the volume button until you see small text pop up in the top, left corner, press the volume button again to wipe the tab completely(total reset)the pin hole on the side of your tab does the same thing. If this doesnt work, turn off the tab and plug in the usb cable to the tab and connect to your computer, your computer will try to install the driver, you might have to search for the driver on the acer site, then after it installs, you should be able to access your sdcard. You will need to search for the update or fix,not sure what tool is used for acer.
Is there anymore help out there. I dont want to download anything until I know for sure exactly what Im doing. I hate this tablet!

OK, let's take this a step at a time. At the very least, we should be able to get the tab functioning again for you.
First, you're going to need a new ROM. I don't know what region Australia is, but at this point I don't think is really very important, so for now I suggest you flash am international ROM. We can worry about the region later.]
Download this file: http://vache-android.com/v1/download.php?fileID=75
This file is NOT encrypted in any way. Extract the update.zip from this file.
Now, you need a microSD card. Sometimes these cars have trouble reading (this often causes the yellow exclamation point), so you might want to format it first (format it to FAT filesystem, not NTFS). If possible, do this in an Android phone.
Copy the update.zip to the card. Must be in the root of the card.
Put the card into the A500, then boot into recovery (Hold down power and volume down, the one closes to the power button in landscape). Keep BOTH of these held down until you see a few lines of text in the top left of the screen. Once that is visible, release the buttons and the device should update.
At this point you should have a working tablet with an international ROM.
i had the same problem with sassybees.
i've tried to download the file but the page is locked...
I have download the update.zip full package but i just don't know which version. I'm a malaysian. Is it need a specific version for countries? I had tried the 4.010.22_COM_GEN1 and the 4.010.40_COM_GEN1 but it seems not working cause when updating, the loading bar stops about 80% and the gear animation stop rotating. The tablet restart and freeze at the android text loading screen again.
I'm so confuse about cwm or other things.. i just need a simple steps to get back to original android system.
How can i solve this problem. My acer tab is useless if it just showing android loading text forever...
The steps really don't get any simpler than the ones I've already given...
Have you tried different SD cards? I've already mentioned these are a common point of update failure.
yeah... i had tried 2 sd card... formatted wit fat system..
just wondering which version i must use? i'm searching in the dev section and found so many version.
the link u had given is somehow locked.. how can i access it?

That link works fine for me. Right click it and choose "Save As..."
As for the SD card, have you formatted it in a PC or an Android phone? Better to do the latter if you can. As for the version you need to use, what was your current ROM? There are plenty of threads in the dev section describing what the versions are...
Hi Floating Fat Man
Sorry about the delay in answering. ( Time difference).
We are having issues with the only SD card we have. ( super expensive here) We also have the Nokia N8 android phone but no where can we find how to format the SD card ( we can format the phone but not the SD card ).We managed to get it to show on the PC and we can format but to a generic format and not the FAT filesystem. I know the Nokia N8 android is a rare phone in the USA cos all the phone shops were swooning over it and saying WOW, we dont have that. So help on formatting the SD card is proving hard to come by. Do you have any suggestions. Oh we copied the file you mentioned to the root on the generic formatted SD card and again got the yellow exclamation mark which was no surprise. I know I have bricked the tablet but I will be using it as a real brick very soon as it goes out the window LOL
Acer support has suggested I send it in for repair and that may be the only option left if we cant get this SD card up and running
I thank you for your help, I certainly have learned alot so far and I have a feeling its only the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks again
Your PC should give you an option to format the card to FAT32, which is the right format. Alternatively, a link to a format tool been posted on these sections recently in one of the many threads discussing the same issues, but I don't have a link handy, sorry.

[Q] Acer iconia A500 Tablet wont go into recovery mode

I have had my acer iconia tablet for 2 months.
I am a total noob when it comes to rooting, flashing or installing new roms on any android device. Never done anything like it.
My tablet just boot loops and all i get is "green android icon holding a yellow triangle with an exclamation point".
What can i do. I have seen a youtube video of a user holding down the volume down + power key and he is presented with a menu to factory reset and cache resetting and all that good stuff. I do not get any of that. Any help would be appreciated.
the menu that you seen in the video. was likely CWM RECOVERY. You do not have that menu due to the fact you do not have a custom recovery installed. the android with exclamation leads to believe you have acer recovery. Its limited Only able to flash a ACER Signed update.zip only .
Reply back with exactly what you did with details about rom version and so on . So someone can better help you. To get the right help we need to know how you broke it..
At this point Do not do anything until you know you are doing the correct fix for your situation.. You are NOT Bricked.. you just have a bad UPDATE.ZIP FILE OR Bad format on your sd card..
Help is close by..
To be honest i really do not know what rom version was used. Like i mentioned before. I myself have never rooted or altered an android device.
From where you are right now in a boot look .. where do you want to end up.. ROOTED ... STOCK TO WHERE YOU can accept the acer OTA. when they push them..
sounds like you may be able to reset the tablet withe hole next to the usb port.. You have to push quite hard to get it to push the Button..
Im guessing due to the lack of information you are providing.. Sorry..
Thanks for your help. The darn thing is still doing the same thing. Guess i got to do a little more research.
If you're asking for help you need to describe what actions exactly you have taken in order to reach this state (as Erica suggested) of your tab. From your post 1 thing is clear - your tab is unable to boot, but what has been modified before remains a mystery.

Yeah, probably my guess, is you tab started to do an OTA update, and as in a lot of cases, it failed. And you're stuck with where you are now.
If using the pinhole reset near the PWR button doesn't work (a hard reset), then I suggest ;
1. Make sure your tab is charged.
2. Go to this thread, and select one of the rom update packages.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Use one of the HC 3.2 update files near the end. Note that the Megaupload file no longer works.
Note that some of the packages are encrypted, so you will need to use the "decrypt" tool he has listed there in his 1st post. Copy it to PC, run it, select your encrypted rom, and let it do it's thing. This will give you the same rom, only states "decrypted" at the end of the file name.
4. Open the rom using Winzip or 7zip. Remove the update.zip (do not extract the contents of it), and copy it to the SD card (replacing a current update.zip if there's one there).
5. Holding either Vol- press and hold PWR. This should force the tab to install that update.zip (you should see some text on the screen, then you can release both buttons. Hopefully it will install.
Post back results please.

Be patient. Try later. Vach's server is probably overloaded due to the leaked ICS Rom.
You only need to get 1 of the A500 update roms. It's actually a fully signed rom in the file "update.zip" Just decrypt rom you the original rom you downloaded using the instructions, use winzip or 7zip to open the decrypted rom, remove the update.zip and copy it to your sd card.
And Then?

Hi,
did u succeed?
Rgds,
trying to recover A500 - boot recovery failed
Hi - I'm trying to reset and recover my son's A500 tablet. I copied one of the HC 3.2 Update.zip files to a microSD card, then held down Power and Volume - buttons. As long as I hold down the Volumn down buttin, the tablet seems to be stuck in a never ending cycle of loading the update and booting recovery image kernal, then restarting, then loading the update.zip file and booting recover image kernal, etc.... If I let go of the Volume Down button, I get in red letters "Boot Verification Failed" message, and it stops.
im trying to help fix an a500 tablet. apparently the tablet gets stuck at the acer logo. when i hit power and the volume button i get some lettering in the top letft. I took the advice here and went and downloaded one of the HC 3.2 updates. copied the update.zip onto the root of the Sd card and then put it back in. I hit the same buttons again and the letters came up. so i assumed things were working. all of a sudden i get an android with a blue diagram in its belly (kind of like it was loading) and then it froze. after waiting for a second I got a second android that popped on the screen and this one is laying on its back with its chest open and a red triangle is showing....So I don't know exactly what I did wrong here. Any help would be appreciated. I am not exactly sure what he did to mess it up. I believe he was trying to install a custom rom and did not go about it correctly and therefore messed up an update and now he has nothing. so im not sure what to do exactly.

I to have had the same problem with my Acer Iconia A500. I followed the instruction and booted the Acer...got to the screen with the Android robot standing upright with the spinning in his stomach...goes to about 1/4 of the way and doesn't go any further....looks like it's trying to continue but has been at the same place for over an hour. Do I need a different rom perhaps?? I used A501.000.00_4.037.01.emea_tmp

Well, you can try this. Below are links to update.zip files already decrypted on my server. I have renamed them, only so you can keep them separate. You will have to change the name to "update" (update.zip) and copy one to ext sd card. Reboot holding Vol (+ or -) and PWR. See if they install. You may have to try each until one installs as there is no way to predict which one will work.

http://d-h.st/gw8
http://d-h.st/2cm
http://d-h.st/Zf8
This is probably the easiest method to try first.
MD
the "41-125-03-update.zip" seem to work for me. The status bar finally is showing but it doesn't seem to be moving. It moved to 1/4 of the bar and it stayed there. Last time it did this, it stayed there for over 2 hrs. I hope it's working this time. Anything else I could try?
My tablet was working fine and I left it there to go to work, coming back I found it on the Acer logo. Many search brought me here.
update ========
tried and tried and tried.......a few times that the status bar did come up, many times it stuck at around 25%. A few times it got all the way to 75% of the bar. It refuse to go farther when I left it there all night. It finally died when the battery was complete drain.
Acer A500 Stuck on ACER Logo (not rooted) finally fixed!
Just wanted to post some positive things for a change. My ACER A500 tablet (not rooted and running ICS 4.0.3) was working fine two months ago and I wanted to watch an ESPN3 football game on the tablet which I then hooked to my HD TV via the HDMI cable. For about an hour, all was fine then the tablet did an uncommanded reboot and then I had the android figure with an opened belly followed by an android laying on it's side with an exclamation mark. On the next restart, my tablet would not pass the ACER logo screen. After reading many posts with the stuck ACER logo, I was not sure how to proceed exactly. I have rooted a 7 inch tablet last year but I could not get my act together on the exact steps to revive my tablet. Finally I came across this post with the ACER ROMs already decripted which removed many questions I had about the exact steps to create an "update.zip" file for my SD card. Based on just downloading the file from your web site and renaming the file to "update.zip" and moving a copy to a formatted SD card, I was ready to try the process to load another ACER file to my tablet. On my first attempt, I tried the file named "206-03" based on a guess of the naming convention used or maybe blind luck. I preformed the PWR button and Vol down button combination with the "update.zip" file on the micro SD inserted in my tablet. The tablet started with three lines of text and then the android figure with it's door open and activity inside the android. This screen stayed then with a completion bar followed by a large text screen warning not to turn off tablet. After about 15 minutes total, my tablet was alive with a request to select my country. Bottom line, taking the steps to put the decripted file on your server and the simple button combination to start the reload process allowed me to get my tablet working great running ICS 4.0.3. I just wanted to post a success story and follow up. Thank you Moscow Desire for taking the extra steps to help the uneducated user!
Anyway I can check if my ROM hardware are working properly? I have tried all the update.zip and all of them show a dead android at the end. I can't even tell if it read from the microSD.

[Q] A500 Stuck on Android Screen

I have an A500 that was originally purchased in Thailand. I contacted Acer Thailand and they provided me a recovery package to install. I put this on a FAT32 formatted Micro SD card and it installs, but when the tablet reboots itself it gets suck on the screen with the silver "android" logo.
I've gone also some of the advice in this thread as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874345.
So far I've tried 3/4 recovery zips provided (41-124-01, 41-125-03, 41-203-01) with the same results. Rather than simply trying to load recovery ROMs at random hoping one magically fixes the problem, what I'd like to do what I would like to do is completely erase the flash on the device, and then try reloading the recovery ROM.
Is there a NON-acer recovery tool I can use to blow away everything that is on there now (and presumably, the corrupted bits?)

I ended up getting it booting up into Jellybean. First I tried restoring as mentioned above with the SD card.
This next part, I believe is the key as the device revived after this step. I put it into a bootloader restore mode by powering on with volume down and flicking the screen lock switch once the device vibrated. After this, it continued with the tablet setup mode and booted into Jellybean.

Urgent help needed I bricked the unbrickable nook color

Summary:
I bricked my sister's Nook Color. She bought it refurbished at a pawn shop for cheap and everything was working until I told my sister that I could root the nook and put an android rom on it. My biggest mistake ever.
I looked at a lot of forums relating to the problem and it seems like there isn't a fix. So basically I got to the point of having CWM working.
All was going so well and I decided to flash eyeballer's cm-9-encore-20120904-0700-unofficial.zip on it. The one on Goo.im. After looking at screenshots of CM9 I was impressed.
I did the factory reset on it and wipe the cache, I flashed the CM9 and it was installing and it seem that it was taking a long time and then the nook turned off.
The biggest mistake that I made was that I formatted the boot , I'm a noob, I figured I wasn't the only one so I came across a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
I thought that CM9 got installed and when I went to turn it on, nothing whatsoever... It doesn't boot no more.
I tried putting the 1gb bootable CWM on a 1gb sd card with Win32 Disk Imager and the Nook didn't boot from the SD card either and I also did the same with an 8gb.
When I go connect the Nook on the computer it searches for a driver called Omap3630 but it doesn't install and it seems to disconnect itself.
I am was looking for more threads and found out that I'm in a similar situation as a user called Jiv_au here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146065
3rd post. I also tried what he did with the 8 boot attempts, pressing power button for 60 seconds and pressing the power on, the N and the volumes.

The problem is that you formatted boot, and CM does not include all of the needed boot files if you formatted boot. You will need to flash the stock firmware back onto the device, and then you can proceed to flash whatever ROM you want on the device, LINK.
I am not sure what version bootable CWM you are using, but download and flash this one,LINK. Since you saw the Omap3630 driver prompt, it does mean that it still is alive and attempting to go through the booting process. As for getting it to boot from this card, you will not get any visual indication that the device is on or not, the screen will stay dark if it’s on or off. Since the device might have been on this whole time I recommend that you fully charge the device before proceeding forward. With no USB cable connected to the device, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then insert the SD card, then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it on. It should boot into the CWM recovery, if it does not press the power button for 30 seconds and try again. It might take a couple attempts, but you should be able to get it. Once you get the device to boot, wipe data/cache, and flash the stock image, and reboot the device. Once you have a working device, you can then boot into the CWM card, and flash the ROM that you want.

You gave me a bit of hope but its not booting. The nook is dead... thanks for the help.
edit: I heard that pressing Power + N is like forcing a shut down so I hold those for 30 seconds and then put the SD card in it No boot.
I tried it again and put the Sd card in it and then press the power button still nothing. I believe this is definitely dead. I wish she had bought it at the B&N store. I think I'm getting her a Nook tablet. I owe it to her.

[Q] Acer A500 tablet will not boot

I'm having an issue with my tablet: it is stuck on "booting recovery image". I can boot into safe mode and have performed a factory reset. I cannot perform a hard reset per Acer video instructions - it just boots into safe mode. I have tried to put an "update.zip" file onto an SD card, in which case it gets stuck in a reboot loop.
After talking to Acer support and paying the $80 for their support service since my tablet is out of warranty, they tried the following:
- told me to press the key combination that I knew led to the hard reset, without warning me that it is a hard reset and without listening to me that it does not work. Surprise surprise, it did not work, tablet booted into safe mode.
- gave me an update.zip file directly from Acer to put onto an SD card. Email me if you want a copy, it is too big to attach here. It made things worse for me actually: now it does not even load safe mode. This is not to say that it won't work for you though.
After these two steps they told me it must be a hardware issue and that I should send it in.
If anyone here has any suggestions beyond the exhaustive research I've already tried that would be much appreciated. I just also wanted to post this as a warning to anyone who tries to go to them for support and actually pays money for it - IT IS NOT WORTH IT. All the info they have is right here on the forum. At the end of my rope I thought I should try, and there it is.
Run babsector file in my root guide linked in my Sig. Post 2, instructions are there also. Pls post output if u receive an error
