Lulz. That's all I have to say - though I don't know who I'm lulzing at. Is it Apple, for their complete BS lawsuit, or is it Samsung, for TouchWiz which is **** and a half?
F****** apple sueing everyone, next hes going to sue the users for not using an apple product. lol
As much as I hate these types of lawsuits, I do hate the way manufacturers have blatantly copied iOS elements. TouchWiz is crap, and "being like the iPhone" is not what is cool. Enough.
Its all about the Benjamin's baby!

Unfortunately, Apple has such enormous orders that if Samsung said FU, they'd be hurting themselves more than Apple. Apple could go to anyone and get what they need - hell, they could build their own fabs and do it themselves.
Jeez apple. They're not even THAT similar! The only similarity is the app drawer with the box around the icons! Big whoop!

That's cool. If Facebook can now redesign its own servers, Apple can make absolutely all its own phone and tablet components too. Meanwhile Samsung will supply all Apple's competitors and the Apple shareholders can ask Black Turtleneck God why cash reserves have dropped so precipitously so fast.
Apple is either going to have to sue everybody (oh wait, maybe they are) since all seem equally guilty to me for ripping them off, or actually try to compete through the innovation they're supposedly so good at.
i agree they copied iOS a little too closely. unfortunatly for apple most people hate touchwiz

I am going to have to disagree on that, while Apple has a tremendous amount of money at their disposal, they can't afford to go a year or two without making a phone/ipod while their factories are built. They rely on outside sources for pretty much everything, to attempt to become completely self reliant would be a bone-headed move and would absolutely kill their stocks.
They are not going to build their own factories...its VERY hard and expensive...most just buy the factories from others and recycle them. Most likely though Apple will just go with someone else in worst case senario..like LG, Sony, Toshiba etc..
Apple makes Samsung electronics biggest customer, a swap would hurt both of them tremendesly.
They are not going to split their business over this though...its far too insignificant...it might even be on purpose to have Samsung and Apple cross license each others patents and then let Apple have leverage over other Android makers...like M$ sued HTC that time..
Apple is a more innovative company than Samsung and everyone owes Apple a lot. There, I said it.
Now that I said it, the pathetic thing about this suit is that by the time Sammy has to pay up and/or dump Touchwiz--which they would do without many tears--and Apple has wasted its own time and money, iOS 7.0 will be out which will be holographic 3D scratch n sniff. ;-)

I like apple and all, but geez... how many "innovative" ways really are there to show application shortcuts?
Apple makes solid products, no doubt, and you definitely get what you pay for (albeit at a premium price), but I think they are going a little crazy lately. I mean, c'mon, suing amazon for calling it the "amazon appstore" because apple coined the term "appstore" first? really apple? is that really stealing your thunder?

Couldn't have said it better myself. This just proves how much our patent system needs an overhaul because it is clearly being abused. It is no longer beneficial but harmful in that it is stifling innovation due to everybody being scared of being sued. I own and like certain Apple products (MacBook and iPod) but this is just ridiculous. I can honestly say I'm disgusted by this news and cannot see myself buying an Apple product again! Make your product better in order for it to compete more effectively instead of just trying to get rid of the competition. Screw you Apple!
That is why I sold my macbook and went back to Windows. Because they started being that way. I just hope HTC wins their appeal. I don't want to see them get their handsets baned. They make a quality product anand shouldn't be punished for it.
Tap-a-Talked from my CM7 Mesmerize.
Another reason I can't stand Apple or Microsoft. These patent lawsuits are getting to be ridiculous. Most of them are are too broad and should have never been issued a patent in the first place. Apple's thinking is if they can't innovate they will litigate to the beat the competition.

They aren't trying to kill android, they are just playing the litigation game. In the US, is this really surprising to anyone? Every large corporation does the same thing. Its not like they are trying to muscle a small business our of business. They are multi-million dollar companies that end up settling things out of court. Claiming that apple wants to kill android is a leap of out reality.
I don't know. They have sued almost every company that has anything to do with android or mobile devices that have android. Lets see. Samsung,HTC,Motorolla and Google just to name a few they have sued. I'm sure there is more but those I know of. Seems to me they are trying to kill off the competition.

It won't ever get that far. If apple really thought they could take down google they would be after them not HTC. They are just trying to chip away at some competition because they can't keep up with all of the manufacturers of smart phones running android (htc, motorola, samsung, sony, lg) they are one company going against many many companies. Its just like windows against osx. Only one company makes hardware for osx, but countless others make windows hardware. Why do you think they made it possible to run windows on a new mac? Honestly, you're ranting. That's fine, if it makes you feel better, although not sure why you should feel worse. It's big companies fighting it out. Let them.
Give the judge the benefit of the doubt for competence. If the suit was frivolous, Apple wouldn't have secured an injunction. Whatever legal merit the suit has, frankly, we don't know. Getting upset about it doesn't make us understand it any better.

Likewise. I bought the second Gen iPod when they were a decent company. Then they got in their mind that they can take over the world (which they might) but I think that is very indecent to innovation. I have never had such a hatred to one company and always will.

It's about time Apple tried to sue someone with a strong patent portfolio. As long as Motorola don't roll over, Apple *are* going to get a bloody nose, because suing over patents nowadays seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the merit of your case.
If there's a rant to be made, it's people's propensity to paint things in good/evil terms ("XYZ is EVIL!"), get more partisan ("I hate THEM! They're the ENEMY!"), and become more blindered in their views ("I'll never buy anything from XYZ!"). It's a self-reinforcing cycle.
Obviously, I'm not just talking about something as trivial as whatever brand of tech toys you espouse. The descent to frothing fanaticism is widespread enough that it is damn annoying and frightening at the same time.

So you're saying is it would be OK to live in a dictatorship country if it was pretty and had good weather?
Sure Apple makes good products, however there are very good if not better alternatives. Apple improves on one product in the market and makes it incredible. Then other companies start making the products better as well and Apple sues them. Happened to mp3 players and iPods, now happening for tablets and iPads. It hurts innovation and I know Google and Microsoft also sue companies but not as much and not as narrow minded/take over the market mentality that Apple has. Now don't get me wrong I have owned Apple before, and yes their products are well made and innovative. But so are a lot of other brands.
But I do agree on the grander scheme of things if we arn't just talking tech toys that yes it is not a good idea to be narrow minded on anything. I believe that's what you were trying to get at.

You are saying this as if it is a new phenomenon.
======short version========
Put simply, it is easier to deal with absolutes and it is easier to convey opinion to others in absolutes.
======long version========
It is human nature to ally with a particular group, society, or set of ideals and denigrate the things that differ from the ideal you are allied with. Countries, religions, sports teams, type of car.... the list is as long as there are comparable objects. It is possible for people to see in shades of right rather than absolutes but this provides no stable platform on which to hang a set of beliefs.
- It is far easier to say "Motorola is incompetent and I will never use them again" than it is to say "Motorola made some serious mistakes with the Xoom but they did do some things right."
- It is easier to say "Motorola is out to screw early Xoom adopters." than it is to say "Motorola is not communicating well with early Xoom adopters."
- It is easier to say "thou shall not kill" than it is to say "thou shall not kill unless it is needed to preserve other life"
- It is easier to say "Other religions are wrong" than it is to say "other religions are different."
- and it is easier to say "Apple is evil" than it is to say "Apple's stance on the similarity between the iPad and Xoom is not reasonable."
Absolutes allow a person to place an idea, group, or company into a position within opinion that requires less thought and little debate. This is comforting to most, requires less consideration, and makes life easier to deal with. The more you deal with a specific idea/group/company the more details you learn and the less likely you are to paint your opinion on the subject with such broad strokes. No one wants to try and know everything in such detail however.
So while it would be better if mankind as a whole took an effort to see the merit in differing opinions on subjects, it is not the nature of man. To try and remove the polarizing nature of the psyche would possibly lead to less conflict but it would also to moral and ethical confusion.
There have been and are individuals who have evolved past this need but those individuals are not common, indeed the most notable have been quite extraordinary.
Here is one take on the patent issue that underlies the various recent legal spats. The commentary delves into more detail than the usual regurgitated pap, and the arguments made are reasonable, at least based on the material as presented.

What is really funny is apple was invented by steve jobs stealing open source programming from someone else, patenting it and putting his name n it, then just having a slick campaign that if u dont buy apple ur not individualistic and being different is cool (as long as it is done in groups...). Then says his product cant be hacked on a tv commercial... Within 48 hours they pulled the commercial because four major hacks came out... So they steal, prey on peoples need to be "cool" and their fear of being hacked... But then turn around and start suing all their competitors. This is not new for them and it is a business tactic now... A pathetic way to slow up progress of their competitors... And their iphone sucks... No expandable memory, no battery pull ability, no open source, poor reception, charges for wifi tethering and it isnt built in, no flash.... Etc etc..
To play on their gay commercials... If you don't have an iphone, well you probably have a better smart phone... Even blackberry and nokia kick iphone ass... Rant over

That's a pretty extreme statement.
Apple has the best marketing in the tech world. They also have some decent products, with plenty of objective reasons to choose Apple over the alternatives.
However, remember that marketing is simply making people aware of a product and its features.
I find when talking to people that decisions on platform aren't made over which commercial was the coolest, but rather the features and/or familiarity with the brand.
I would argue that very few people are so superficial as to choose a platform based on "hip"-ness.
The real problem here is not Apple. Whatever you think of iOS, they are just a company using every tool at their disposal to succeed. If roles were reversed any company would do the same.
The problem is a hopelessly broken, pitifully antiquated Patent system that allows absurd patents to be approved.
This problem is compounded by the abuse of "patent troll" companies that never developed a technology or released a product, but simply bought patents and create lawsuits.

I'm not terribly optimistic this will go anywhere, but I signed it because I consider software patents to be the scourge of the software industry. They are especially deadly for start-ups and small companies working on innovative new products - exactly the people patents are supposed to protect.

First of all, Apple is very good to steal techs and stuffs from others and then later call it for revolutionary, amazing, incredible and wonderfull. And then later goes and sues everyone that steals something from Apple again.
And secondly. Apple should in the first place not sue others for stealing when Apple is stealing all the time themself.

I know I may have some of my facts wrong here, just correct me if I'm wrong.
Since Google bought out Motorola Mobility a while back, wouldn't it make more sense for them to be using Motorola for the "Nexus" phones? Why would they want to team up with Samsung to make something they could do themselves?
Companies "bid" for the opportunity to make the nexus device. Google is afterall a corporate entity. Why would they want to screw themselves out of more money if it was there for the taking?
I do however think it will be better for Moto devices in the long run for updates..

I've been wondering the same thing. Maybe Samsung's patented the curved display and Google's got a fetish for that?
Regardless, I'm itching to see a Moto nexus phone. Samsung left a bad taste in my mouth with the Captivate, HTC always seems to have some sort of screen/multitouch issue, SE seems like a specialty phone kind of manufacturer, LG? Eh, I probably wouldn't mind the Thrill/3D, but they have yet to prove themselves.
Motorola? I realize there was this tiff about the bootloader, but I'd rather have good, consistent build quality than a lot of other things.
The deal has not yet gone through. Why don't people do any sort of research at all before asking questions? Shareholders are voting on November 17 if the acquisition will go through or not. Secondly, Google has stated many, many times that they will not touch MotoMobility at all. They only want the patents and will not make any changes to MotoMobility's business at all. Period. Also, Samsung makes high quality devices. There's a reason they've been chosen for 2 of the 3 Nexus devices and Moto has been chosen for none. Moto has sold 4.4 million total smartphones in each the last 2 quarters. Samsung sold 30 million devices in the last quarter alone including 10 million SGS2s without even debuting in the US, one of the largest smartphone markets in the world.
From my understanding, Google has not yet purchased Motorola Mobility. The Boards of Directors of both Motorola and Google have approved of the deal but there is a long procedure to be completed in order for this deal to actually go through.

I don't really understand people, honestly. Motorola has always put out good quality, 100% working phones. The bootloader is unlockable if you want to mess with your phone, but something like a screen issue isn't fixable unless you get a new phone.

Samsung sold 30 million devices in the last quarter alone including 10 million SGS2s without even debuting in the US, one of the largest smartphone markets in the world.

If Google isn't going to touch MotoMobility, then who is running the company? -.-

I don't really understand people, honestly. Motorola has always put out good quality, 100% working phones. The bootloader is unlockable if you want to mess with your phone, but something like a screen issue isn't fixable unless you get a new phone.

The same people who are running it today. No one is being fired. It was a purely patent acquisition. MotoMobility will remain as it is today. As for the bootloader, it is not unlockable unless something huge leaks. How many phones have had their bootloader unlocked since the OG Droid? 2. The Atrix and the Photon 4g, which is basically an atrix for Sprint. That's it.
1. Google doesn't officially own Motorola Mobility Yet.
2. For those of you who think that google strictly bought Motorola for patents and are not going to take advantage of Owning the Cellular division and developing with motorola before other companies is on a cloud. Of course google isn't going to "admit" that they would do that cause that would cause a semi sorta monopoly so they "Say" they aren't going to do anything for plausible deniability. I mean really come on think about it...They Own a major manufacturer of cellphones and Just want Pantents....give me a break.

You're absolutely delusional. Motorola is doing so much worse than the other Android manufacturers. They stand to lose a lot if they show any favoritism to Motorola. Samsung sold 30 million smartphones last quarter. HTC Sold 13 million. Motorola sold 4.4 million. Motorola is not a major seller of smartphones. Q2 rankings were apple, samsung, nokia, rim, htc, lg, motorola, huawei, zte, other. You have no idea how business works. Plausible deniability doesn't work here. It'll be as plain as day light if Google ever favors Moto.

Dude seriously have you ever worked in a business and have any idea what goes on behind 99% of business's doors and the shady business that goes on? I mean seriously who is delusional thinking that motorola won't take advantage of being owned by google and vice versa. There would be a Major reason for Motorola to take advantage of that considering how bad they are doing in the market and of course it will be as quite as a mouse. Both sides would deny it until blue in the face but still won't stop either from taking advantage of each other. I mean hell just look at RIM or Apple or Android for that matter all of which are in some sort of lawsuit or another for infringement on this or that patent. Would be very easy to mask any favoritism at the moment with all the BS Lawsuits going on right now.

Yea, you definitely have no idea what you're talking about. Favoritism has nothing to do with lawsuits. They wouldn't be in trouble if they collaborated together. Fact of the matter is, HTC and Samsung already are on edge. They are being pressured from outside and within to switch away from Android as it is. Manufacturers that are cooperating with a software vendor do NOT want to compete with that same vendor on a hardware level. As you can see Android hardware manufacturers are not happy and I’m sure will be on the lookout for another mobile OS at the drop of a pin. Google would shoot themselves in the foot if they showed any signs of favoritism to Motorola. Face the facts. Google has little to gain from Motorola doing better at the expense of pissing off the far bigger Manufacturers of Android handsets. The only way Motorola can benefit from this merger is if Google favors Motorola other other manufacturers in regards to early source code access and preferential Nexus selection. Both of these would be painfully obvious to any other manufacturer.
Any hardware company (Motorola, Samsung, etc.) makes money by selling hardware, so they do not want to update software, they want to update hardware and use the new software as a selling point. Their ideologies already clash. Google wants to advance the Android ecosystem. Motorola simply wants a bigger share of that market.
The thing is, Google kind of had its hand forced in this. It's a fact that gets overlooked. Motorola basically started saying they were going to start suing the other manufacturers of Android. I don't know about you, but in my opinion that's a pretty ****ing bad thing for the ecosystem. This wasn't something Google thought of out of the blue. It's something that was honestly hoisted upon them. If they didn't stop Motorola, they would have started suing, other manufacturers would have started adopting WP7. Google doesn't want to lose its controlling grip over Android, and for good reason -- it's a money maker for them right now. By buying Motorola not only does it stop the potential for lawsuits against the other manufacturers, but it also stops the potential for Motorola to start producing WP7 phones as well. The patents were also a very sweet reason, but it wasn't the only reason.
Motorola was also threatening to create it's own private fork of android and it's own market a few months ago. Basically Motorola was looking to be bought. Apparently Microsoft was also interested.

are you sitting on the board of directors of Google? no? do you have access to private information that pertains to Google's plans for Motorola? no? then i guess you have no clue what you're talking about and need to chill out. every single one of your posts is nothing but calling other people idiots and spouting information (without any hard evidence) about future events that people are just SPECULATING about. is it really that annoying to you for other people to have a conversation about possibilities?

It's called common sense and knowledge. Something 99% of this board apparently lacks. Google has stated MULTIPLE TIMES they won't favor Motorola over their other partners. Every single one of my posts has been backed up by hard numbers and articles. Name anything I have stated to be fact that hasn't been backed up with hard evidence. The person I am responding to insists that Motorola will somehow have backhanded deals with Google when it has been explicitly stated that there will be no benefit for Motorola over other manufacturers from this acquisition. Maybe if posters were somewhat intelligent, I wouldn't have to point out the multitudes of falsities, misinformation, and just straight up FUD they keep claiming.

Sounds to me like you believe everything you read or what someone tells you. So if the President told you the only way to live was to jump off the Sears tower you would just blindly believe him and go jump off the Sears Tower even though common sense and logic would say wait if I do that I am dead. All I have been saying is Don't believe Everything someone tells you they will Do. Most corporations say One thing and do something completely different behind closed doors.

Way to use a straw man argument. And as I explained earlier. There is a tiny upside to Motorola doing well to a huge downside if they were to get caught red-handed. The risk vs reward is tremendously imbalanced. You'd have to have 0 sense of business if you'd take that risk. The only reason Google did this was to take patents for defense and to defend their partners from Motorola potentially suing them with those same patents they just bought. If you can't see that, there's no helping you.
I could care less "who" makes it, but how about a Nexus phone WITH EXT_SD support already?...
