On stock recovery select wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache
On CWM Recovery you can do the same thing or even go to mounts and storage and select format system. (Be careful. If you select format system everything on your phone will be lost and your phone won't boot up. This process is necessary before flashing some ROMS.)
Go to Setting Then Privancy Then Factorey Data Reset Then Select Erase Everything:thumbup:

Is it safe to use factory reset on Costum ROM?
Im thinking to use it when i make mess in my device storage or is there any other method to wipe my device storage to start as new for ROMs and other things?
I found this on web.
Is this how i should do it?
1. Boot into recovery
2. Wipe the cache partition
3. Go to advanced and wipe dalvik and batt stats.
4. Go back to mounts and storage and format system, then data, then cache.
5. Go back and install the rom zip file from the sd card.
6. Reboot.
Not necessary to wipe battery stats or Format system. Download new ROM- boot to recovery- wipe data/factory reset- wipe cache- wipe dalvik- reboot.
Formatting the system may cause you to lose important files or even backups

Hello people. Just wanted to ask how is the right way to wipe when flashing a rom WITHOUT losing the rom (wiping internal)? In CWM i just factory / reset data then thats it then clear cache and dalvik cache. In TWRP do i just need to swipe when the screen says "Most of the time this is the time that you need" when i will flash rom? Thanks for guiding!
anyone?
1. factory reset
2. advance, wipe system
thats all for me, works everytime... just make sure to wipe cache/dalvik after flashing zip files be it roms or gapps or whatever :good:
The default "most of the time" option is a fresh reset of the phone. it wont wipe the ROM itself, but all the data will be lost and you start over. Wiping system will remove everything, a ROM must be flashed after wiping system.
So before i flash a rom i wipe the "most of the time" then advanced format system? right?

true that... sorry for misleading initially, format system only applicable if you wanna have clean install of new rom

No need to use format system unless you are installing a fresh ROM. Format system will remove everything from your device (other than sdcard info and all that). So you get a clean slate.
If you just want to flash an update to the same ROM you can either 'dirty flash', which I usually just wipe cahce/dalvik then flash the ROM and reboot, and you save all your user modified things, or you can wipe system and install the ROM. You lose everything that way so make backups.
Usually there isnt much need to factory reset unless you're having an issue with something. What is it you're trying to do?
I wanted to flash a stock based rom. Thank you.

1. Backup your internal DATA to your computer.
2. Reflash the same STOCK FIRMWARE unticking "AUTOREBOOT"
3. Take out the battery when the process finish (10 sec.). Put it in again.
4. Boot in STOCK RECOVERY and select Wipe data/Factory reset. "Reboot system now" then.
5. Good luck :highfive:
It happened with me and many people that they have no OS installed and custom recovery gives an error CANNOT MOUNT DATA
Now you can try to repair data partition using twrp or Mount data or wipe or whatever IT WILL NOT WORK
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Flash Philz touch from here
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7lxW9DP17gNalk2Y3EtcU9JZTA/edit?usp=docslist_api
Go to wipe --> Custom Wipe
Then first wipe data/media and then data
VOILĂ€
Your data partition is mounted now just flash whatever you want

Format data under wipe tab in TWRP followed by a reboot also works.

I am getting a new S8 in a week and currently hold a Galaxy S5. My plan is to sell it on eBay for some extra money. What is the secure way to erase content and settings from the phone? just curious about it
Flash stock firmware on ODIN + factory reset in android recovery.
This will reset your device and delete all data on your internal storage like it was when you first got it

I heard the data is still available after reset, is that correct?

Data will be available if you factory reset in a custom recovery like TWRP (where internal storage needs to be wiped manually if you want). However, in stock android recovery, factory resetting will delete all data off your device, including your internal storage.
I hope this clears everything

Thanks for the info.
Factor reset you mean "Settings -> Backup & reset -> Factory reset" or 'wipe all data/factory reset' in recovery mode?
