[Q] Taking the 12B OTA.. Will it cause problems? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am currently using CWM Recovery (non-touch), and have my phone rooted, with a custom ROM yadda yadda. I'm not too sure what official firmware I'm on, but it isn't that latest, I know that much. I've been wanting to take the official OTA (I have a backup of the stock rooted ROM i can go back to). However, I'm not sure if anything bad will happen if I do, so I guess a few questions..
1) Will I lose root (probably, I know)
2) Will I lose my recovery? (probably, again)
3) Will taking an OTA, with a custom recovery have any negative effects? Or will the OTA overwrite the CWM recovery?
Also, is rooting 12B and installing a custom recovery a pain in the ass on the newest OTA? I'll do some research myself on this last question right now.
Thanks!

Check out all threads titled "bootloop after taking ota" it will answer all your questions ?

2 quick questions..

1: will unlocking the boot loader prevent me from OTA? And let's say I do get an OTA in the future with a unlocked bootloader, will the boot loader "relock" itself ?
2: If I root, can I use OTA, and will it keep root.
Thanks !

1. the state of the bootloader does not affect OTAs
2. don't know
I'd like to know this as well. I've rooted and am getting a nag to apply the update but it doesn't seem wise until I have the answer to your 2nd question

i believe neither matter. But often the phone will just get unrooted after the ota.
As long as the rom is still stock it should be fine.
*Someone confirm?
As long as you keep stock recovery you can update and keep root. Also its wise to keep a nandroid of stock ROM, that way when an OTA is released you can nandroid back and get ota. This works well if you like to run a custom ROM but be able to check out ota should you feel the need.
Also many people updated to 4.2.1 while using CWM but the rest of their system is stock including root. I nandroid back to stock, with root and cwm. I was prompted to download the ota. Then I applied it via cwm. It will ask you if you wanna keep root and cwm while going through the flash process. Pretty seamless actually

worked perfectly with CWM Recovery 4.2 to 4.2.1

Will custom recovery prevent ota updates?

First let me apologise if this is in the wrong section. I could not decide if this was the best place for it or q a&a. As the title sais. If i flash twrp will it prevent me from receiving ota updates from Google. I have an HTC sensation XE and if i flash a custom recovery i know from past experience that it prevents ota updates. This nexus 7 however is my first "Google" device you could call it and as such i do not know that.
Can any one inform me on this issue. Also if it will an ota cause loss of root on this nexus like it did on my smartphone or will it stay? If it is gone i suppose it will simply be a matter of using chainfires root tool again when it gets updated for it.
Thanks in advance.

Q&A would be the best place for the post, but I can offer some insight. Any time you flash a custom rom you will forfeit the option of an ota update from your carrier or Google. This doesn't affect your play store apps as they will update when needed. The information that gets sent to your carrier identifies it as being non-official software so only a few custom ROMs that are well maintained will point the ota updates to its own servers. If you wish to receive official ota updates you should perform a nandroid backup of your stock rom to have a restore point for when a new release comes out. Aside from that, you would have to flash everything back to stock (probably stock recovery too) in order to be seen by the carrier as an eligible device.

Who said anything about flashing a custom rom. I know i didn't. Sorry but that reply is no insight at all. I asked if flashing twrp a custom recovery would prevent ota updates like on my phone. Nothing else. I did not say one word about custom recovery.

If you install a custom recovery like twrp, you wouldn't be able to install an OTA from Google. You need stock recovery for OTAs.
now that's more of an answer i was hoping to get, can some other users confirm this? I suppose i'll lose root aswell but i imagine that would simply be a case of waiting for an updated root tool then. Say i do flash a recovery, does google have a page where you can manually download the update files to flash? But that would probably cause a lose of root as well but the custom recovery would remain intact, correct?

This has already been brought up many times e.g.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404833
I thought as much. I'll stick with stock recovery then until i need a custom recovery for some specific reason. For now root access is enough. And if an ota comes out and i lose recovery well I'll just wait for chainfire to update his root tool
i received the jss15j -> jsl36c update on my razorg with twrp recovery installed.
after the update stock recovery was back.
you can boot every recovery or kernel image without flashing it using fastboot:
fastboot boot nameofrecovery.img
I think you can have your cake and eat it too.
Instead of "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" to flash the custom recovery, you can "fastboot boot recovery.img".
Every time you want the custom recovery, use fastboot boot command on the pc. This way you can make nandroid backups and flash superSU to root. But, you will not be replacing the stock recovery.
I did this on my HTC phone, when I wanted to remain stock, rooted, yet able to receive OTA updates.

Good to know.

I've taken OTAs using custom recoveries before on any number of devices. If you're not careful you can lose your recovery and have to reflash again, but sometimes you don't even lose that.
Well, there might be complications installing an OTA with custom recovery if it comes with a newer bootloader version/radio. Sometimes it works, but there were also reported problems.
Well i just had an ota update to jss15r and lost root as kinda expected. Now ill just have to find out if rerunning the root tool will be enough. Since it is already OEM unlocked i suppose i can simply modify that bat file and remove that line and run it again?

[Q] Regarding 4.4

So, I got the OTA notification, and before I do something stupid, I have a few stupid questions I'm on stock 4.3, rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, xposed framework and franco kernel. I read in other people's threads that in order to not brick, I should go back to stock kernel, stock recovery and I'll lose root and unlocked bootloader, correct? If so, is wug's kit still usable on 4.4 to get root/unlock back? And regarding xposed, anything I should do about that, like go to stock framework lol or the framework doesn't affect the update? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to risk a brick, and THEN ask many questions Thank you very much!
First of all this won't brick your phone. You have a few options:
1-download the ota zip, go into recovery, do a full wipe and flash the ota zip. (This is the quickest and easiest method. After doing this you will still have your custom recovery, and the contents of your internal storage will be untouched.)
2-Flash the factory images. (Your phone gets completely wiped, including your custom recovery.)

Just go into Wugs and flash the latest firmware directly, you won't have to change anything else.

Alright, thanks! according to method 1, will I lose root? If so, is it as easy as flashing supersu again, or do I have anything else to do? Thanks again!

Yes, root will be lost. But to get it back just download the latest supersu and simply flash it via recovery. Thats all.

[Q] noob question, newly rooted G2 (D802) about custom recovery

Hello guys,, I'm a new user of G2, and have rooted it after a week when I bought it. I've searched similar following question but seems like I can't find the exactly answer I'm looking for..
So, first of all, please excuse me because I'm still new with G2..
I'm currently on Stock 4.2.2 JB v.20e rooted G2 and I'm still about to install a custom recovery into it. I decided to stay in JB since I found there are still some minor problems in KitKat firmware... My questions are:
1. If I already installed CWM or TWRP, and when I want to get back to Stock firmware, will the custom recovery disappeared or will it stay there?
2. I've read in some cases, update to KitKat from a rooted Stock JB via OTA could cause a bootloop. So if I back to purely Stock, it means the root access will be vanished right? can I update to KitKat via OTA safely after I back to Stock firmware?
thanks a lot in advance guys..
It depends on how you "restore" back to stock. If you make a backup in the recovery and restore from there, then no, the recovery will not disappear. But if you flash the stock image with adb or fastboot or whatever it's called (I think it may be called download mode) , then yes, the recovery will be gone.
It's my understanding that if you are on Jb, rooted with no mods other than root, then you can take the ota and you will have rooted kitkat. But don't quote me on that. Google some more.

[Q] Verizon Kit Kat OTA update failed - code 408 ????

I finally clicked the Install Now button to take the Verizon G2 OTA to Kit Kat.
The phone rebooted and then went into TWRP recovery. Figured out how to get past that using ADB, but when phone boots up it tries to install the OTA, but fails and says:
"Sorry there was a problem updating your LG VS980. No changes where made."
In the Status section of ABOUT, SOFTWARE UPDATE, status shows as Update Failed, with code = 408.
Any ideas on how to fix this failed OTA?
If you want to ota you have to be complete stock no custom recovery(cwm/twrp/philz), no xposed/modules, no mods, nothing modified in the system partition you need to be completely stock to be able to ota

Thanks so much!
I thought I read that but also didn't find a way to go from stock 12b (with Xposed, some minor mods and TWRP) to 24a without a full wipe..
Know of a way? Or post to point me to?
Thanks so much!
