Hi I am making my first app, a launcher, I have to questions
1. I have it setup to return to home screen from app drawer but it also refreshes the whole main activity the code I have in place for this is:
Code:
[user=439709]@override[/user] public void onBackPressed() { super.onBackPressed(); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); [code]
Is there a better way to do this(without refreshing the main activity) if so can someone point me in the right direction
2. What is the best way to implement page viewer for more home screens or is there a better way to do this as well?
I appreciate all and any response and help and thank anyone willing to lend a hand

I think a launcher is definitely not an app a beginner should code.
But to your question: I guess you should leave super.onBackPressed() out.

Well, I think it depends on which kind of launcher he creates. If it is no fancy 3D launcher, I think of it as a better project for a beginner than a project that involves Server interaction. There are special, easy launchers which are designed for children as well.
Its no 3d or nothing really fancy the idea I have is a very simplistic and minimal launcher with just basic launcher features, the ui will be very similar to other launchers but yet different, so no other suggestions on how to implement closing app drawer when back button is pressed?

Or is there any resources that would be recommended?

I would create two Fragments, one for the homescreens and one for the app drawer. Set it up that way that you can use popBackStack() to return to the homescreens from the app drawer.
Very detailed resource on Fragments: http://developer.android.com/guide/components/fragments.html

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I was wondering if there's a way to modify the permanent tray at the bottom of the screen? I want to put my chompsms link in place of the default messaging link. Thank you in advance.

Try using launcher pro it allows you to do this and is more customizable than samsung's default launcher. I just started using it myself and prefer it a lot more
If you open the app tray and press the menu button you will get an option for view type. Select customize. Press menu button again and select edit. You can now change the center two icons

if you're talking about customization, try ADW Launcher.
inb4 another ADW Launcher and Launcher Pro debate.

Actually you are the beginning of it...
Launcher pro > LIFE ITSELF
You learn something new everyday. No idea the menu button did anything in the app tray. Thank you. And I've tried both launchers. This is probably blasphemy but I don't like either. *runs and ducks for cover*

There are tons of these types of apps in the market. Here's a list of the ones I thought were good:
Open Home
Live Home
Launcher Pro
ADW
aHome
dxTop
Of those, I'd have to say Launcher Pro and Live Home are my favorites.
Here's an article on AndroidPolice with a 6 minute video demonstrating the new features.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...eleased-transitions-to-a-whole-new-dimension/
This one might finally get me to drop LauncherPro Plus!
Differences between ADW.Launcher and ADWLauncher EX
* 5 different app drawer styles/behaviors
o 3D Nexus One like application drawer
o 2 different plain vertical drawer styles, the "old one" and a new fast and smooth one
o 2 different iPhone-like horizontal application drawers, a traditional paginated one and a new one with continuous fling
* Different desktop transitions: new animations while navigating through your desktop screens. Try them all, they’re crazy!!!
* New Icons configurations/look and feel: Tweak your desktop icons, change its sizes, add coloured backgrounds, change font size, color, etc!
* New fast presets mode: Quickly change the whole desktop configuration by 1 click!
* Editable desktop icons for applications, shortcuts and folders!
* Lots of code improvements
* More, more more to come!!
Played around with it while some features are cool it still lags. Im going to stay with launcher pro.

That's the biggest reason I switched to LPP from adw. It wasn't a problem with the features, its just not as fast and smooth as LPP.

I didn't find any lag with this new version... but I'm still sticking with LauncherPro Plus because the widget resize feature works better and because the LPP widgets are so nice.
I didn't mind paying the $3.50 for ADW just to contribute to a developer who has put so much into his work and it's all been free until now. Plus, this way I'll get automatic ADW updates and maybe eventually it will add the features I want.
Has anyone figured out how to hide app labels in the drawer? I hope he doesn't leave out that feature in this version.

What are you guys smokin? There is no posted app in this thread. I posted a link to the article on AndroidPolice... I even said I didn't mind paying for the effort of the developer, why would I then post a copy so everyone else doesn't have to?!
Unless you're talking about a post that has since been deleted... in that case, my bad! =)

Ok, I really am not liking Sense UI anymore. I don't really like MIUI or Vanilla Gingerbread. I would like to know where to begin in creating my own custom user interface to run over Gingerbread. Or perhaps a simpler task would be porting over other user interfaces from Motorola and Samsung to run over Gingerbread.

Why not use go launcher or adw or launcher pro. They will replace sense...

Hmm, never thought about that. Nice idea. But I guess my main purpose in making this was to see if anyone has (and can help me) created my own custom UI. It'd be nice I guess.

First you would need to learn Java and C+ coding. Next I would learn Linux as android is Linux and you will need the knowledge to work on the UI.
Have a good look through the 'post your homescreen' thread. There's a wealth of inspiration in there. Have a look in the widget thread too.
Unless i'm wrong it's not the UI that you want to change as such, but what we'd call a Layout. For all intents and purposes it's the same thing. but UI is software whereas layout is graphical. End result being you want homescreens that look nice right?
Good Launcher+Good Widgets+Wallaper+Imagination and you'd be surprised how good you can make your device look. Some of what i see in the Homescreen thread are works of art!

Well, What I really want to do is make my own thing. I mean a couple of starter ideas,
- 6 basic home screens (in a cube shape) you can change when slid vertically or horizontally
- 2-4 (based on how many you want) "tabs" on the side of choice that can hold apps, home screens would mainly be for widgets, can also be used for apps though.
I don't know, Its just ideas I wanted to be able to put into my own UI. I think I may get into coding to make my own UI.
Check out an open source launcher, it will give you an idea of how to do crap, beyond whatever is in the API docs. I think ADW is open sourced.

I would start with flashing a non sense ROM. Thus you'll get rid of sense bloat and will get a stock standard launcher or any other customizable launcher. Just look through available Roms. Personally I'd recommend CM 7.

Hey guys
Can anyone recommend any good multitasking apps to me?
Like one where u can long press the home button and see running apps, and then being able to close or terminate it. The apps do not necessary have to have these features, its just an impression of my ideal multitasking app

Try smart taskswitcher.long press search key to recant, running, favorite etc.
Search MultiTasking lite/pro (i use the pro version) on the market. In my opinion is the best. BTW in cm settings (if you use cyanogenmod) you can set an app as long home key shortcut.
This is my personal favorite.

I was having a clear out of apps the other day and when speaking to other people in my office that i seem to have very few apps in comparison.
I love a minimilistic look and i suppose that carrys over even to the app screens for me, so i currently have 3 app screens and any time I install something new, i try to delete something i dont use as much to keep it that way.
So, how many screens of apps do you have?
i use the "smart launcher" so only 1 screen really. I went from being a widget crazed android user with 7 screens, to finding the minimalist and simple look of smart launcher
All i need is there.
I have an app draw
