Custom User Interfaces - Android Software Development

Ok, I really am not liking Sense UI anymore. I don't really like MIUI or Vanilla Gingerbread. I would like to know where to begin in creating my own custom user interface to run over Gingerbread. Or perhaps a simpler task would be porting over other user interfaces from Motorola and Samsung to run over Gingerbread.

Why not use go launcher or adw or launcher pro. They will replace sense...

Hmm, never thought about that. Nice idea. But I guess my main purpose in making this was to see if anyone has (and can help me) created my own custom UI. It'd be nice I guess.

First you would need to learn Java and C+ coding. Next I would learn Linux as android is Linux and you will need the knowledge to work on the UI.

Have a good look through the 'post your homescreen' thread. There's a wealth of inspiration in there. Have a look in the widget thread too.
Unless i'm wrong it's not the UI that you want to change as such, but what we'd call a Layout. For all intents and purposes it's the same thing. but UI is software whereas layout is graphical. End result being you want homescreens that look nice right?
Good Launcher+Good Widgets+Wallaper+Imagination and you'd be surprised how good you can make your device look. Some of what i see in the Homescreen thread are works of art!

Well, What I really want to do is make my own thing. I mean a couple of starter ideas,
- 6 basic home screens (in a cube shape) you can change when slid vertically or horizontally
- 2-4 (based on how many you want) "tabs" on the side of choice that can hold apps, home screens would mainly be for widgets, can also be used for apps though.
I don't know, Its just ideas I wanted to be able to put into my own UI. I think I may get into coding to make my own UI.

Check out an open source launcher, it will give you an idea of how to do crap, beyond whatever is in the API docs. I think ADW is open sourced.

I would start with flashing a non sense ROM. Thus you'll get rid of sense bloat and will get a stock standard launcher or any other customizable launcher. Just look through available Roms. Personally I'd recommend CM 7.

Probably a clever launcher/theme to make it look like that. IIRC the IOS keyboard doesn't look like that.

The ios keyboard does look like that, that is the same keyboard, very impressive.
This has what to do with Nexus One? This should have been posted in the forum where trashed posts go.

It's a mobile link. Here's one for desktops:

Well the wallpaper scrolls with the screen so its definitely a theme, runs pretty smooth though.
The description states it is not a port, it is a replica of the iOS that is nearly identical but has some issues. This is a fantastic job, but ultimately sort of pointless.
pretty good replica.
may impress some of the iDiots.
Also, if I recall from my 3GS... When you access spotlight, the rest of the screen darkens... other than that and scrolling wallpaper, it looks to be a pretty acurate replica.
Really, though, the only use I would have for iOS on my Android is - to run the few apps that still haven't been built for Android. And no amount of skinning is going to make an iClone run those apps

[Q] I want to get my Epic to stock.

Hi guys. First time posting here. I have a Samsung Epic 4g and I was wondering if there are any roms out there that will get me to a stock Froyo condition. I am not interested in any themes or any extras, just plain old android. Basically, I want my phone to act as if it were a Nexus One. Please advise.
There is a Froyo leak that is going around currently. However, if you really want to make it look like the nexus one, follow these steps.
1. Look in the development section, there's a guide on how to flash froyo.
Next, download Launcherpro and Desktop Visualizer.
The launcher is similar to the nexus ones launcher.
Next, download some nexus one icons online, and use the desktop Visualizer. Its in the widget section and use the first option. The steps are pretty straight forward. Hope this is what you were looking for!
You won't get it exactly like the nexus one anyway due to a different processor btw
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Thanks for the reply. However, I should say, I am not looking for a Nexus One look. I am looking for stock android. I have used Launcher pro before... I can't exactly agree with you that it looks like the stock Froyo launcher however. I have disabled the Touchwiz launcher though and am using the stock Froyo launcher. Honestly, I just want a true Google device with no bull on it. Thanks.
We dont have a 100 percent aosp rom.

Playstation XMB Android launcher

I love the way the Playstation XMB looks so I was wondering would anyone else want a launcher that looks like that. I'm currently working on Slick UI so it wouldn't be for awhile that I start looking into it but would anyone else like this?

I for one would love a launcher like that. It would be intersting to see how you would integrate that with the android system.
Love how the ui looks on the PSP and ps3 i got both but would love to have my phone like that as well, an good luck u need a tester let me know
Sent from my CBW Blaze using XDA App
i too would like to have UI like the ps3 xmb. you need a tester let me know as well.
Well, sections on the XMB (like Settings, Game, Video, etc.) are like homescreens on Android (containing shortcuts).
And you already have the united wallpaper ^^
So I think it would be great, but not revolutionary. Unless you surprise us ?
I would definitely pay for this app and am willing to help test it out. I am a video game tester so testing ui its very easy for me.

any ideas of what launcher is easiest to theme? I mean we have the live wallpaper.

Adw launcher

New version of ADW (ADW LAUNCHER EX) looks pretty sweet

Here's an article on AndroidPolice with a 6 minute video demonstrating the new features.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...eleased-transitions-to-a-whole-new-dimension/
This one might finally get me to drop LauncherPro Plus!
Differences between ADW.Launcher and ADWLauncher EX
* 5 different app drawer styles/behaviors
o 3D Nexus One like application drawer
o 2 different plain vertical drawer styles, the "old one" and a new fast and smooth one
o 2 different iPhone-like horizontal application drawers, a traditional paginated one and a new one with continuous fling
* Different desktop transitions: new animations while navigating through your desktop screens. Try them all, they’re crazy!!!
* New Icons configurations/look and feel: Tweak your desktop icons, change its sizes, add coloured backgrounds, change font size, color, etc!
* New fast presets mode: Quickly change the whole desktop configuration by 1 click!
* Editable desktop icons for applications, shortcuts and folders!
* Lots of code improvements
* More, more more to come!!
Played around with it while some features are cool it still lags. Im going to stay with launcher pro.

That's the biggest reason I switched to LPP from adw. It wasn't a problem with the features, its just not as fast and smooth as LPP.
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
I didn't find any lag with this new version... but I'm still sticking with LauncherPro Plus because the widget resize feature works better and because the LPP widgets are so nice.
I didn't mind paying the $3.50 for ADW just to contribute to a developer who has put so much into his work and it's all been free until now. Plus, this way I'll get automatic ADW updates and maybe eventually it will add the features I want.
Has anyone figured out how to hide app labels in the drawer? I hope he doesn't leave out that feature in this version.

Never though I'd say this..

..but shortly after I flashed CM9 stable, I kinda started to miss touchwiz a lot, so I had to nandroid back to it.
And I am the one who hates touchwiz.. (although, I use Nova as my launcher)

I actually like Touchwiz on this phone, seriously. All previous versions annoyed me, but it is smooth and flows well on this phone.
Touchwiz is good and nice, but i think if the backgrounds were white (in the contacts and call log at least) it will be nicer

Can understand you very well.
Have been an aosp freak before (or I'm still, but not at this device), but I'm pretty pleased with touchwiz now. Some ctl and build.prop tweaks and all works fine so far.
Also touchwiz has at the current stage already some small, but useful features build in like the battery percent or the pinch to overview at the appdrawer. Not to forget about the missing mhl support at cm10 which is a dealbreaker for me.
Additional I must confess that I don't like the attitude of team hacksung, even while their work is still much appreciated and they are for sure great developers, it seems to me they aren't doing it anymore because they like to do it, more because they think they have to. For sure it's annoying when noobs clutter the development thread with ridiculous posts, but that you have to expect at a device like the gs3 and the argument that they are doing it for free, yes, it sure makes their work more valuable, but at the same time, they knew it when they started.
My opinion is they or at least every member of their team on his own should focus on one device, maybe that way it would be less load for each developer and at the same time more benefits for the community.
Sry that I cluttered your thread, this I wanted to get of from me sometime ago.

Coming from a galaxy s phone, I remember wanting touch wiz back. The problem with touch wiz as opposed to HTC sense, is you can't retain the framework with a custom Rom. I feel there is more to gain from having a custom Rom than having full blown touch wiz. Look around though, you can probably find a .zip of the launcher here, so you can run a very close emulation of touch wiz on the Rom if your choice. I had a Rom on my captivate called "remics" which had galaxy s3 stock theming throughout the operating system. Just look around, you'll find what you want here on xda

Samsung has come good features but they load it up with crap and its to much. Problem is it seems like an all or nothing situation
Same happenend to me I love touchwiz I flash back. Will go aosp when aokp is back on track .

It's the hidden stuff I love in the new touchwiz, like the native mkv and other formats, stay awake, camera app, t9 dialler, swipe to message/call, reject a call with a message..... and loads more really well thought out features. Touchwiz isn't just the launcher. I use apex and have it looking how I want (stockish), yet retain all the samsung stuff. Why anyone would complain about touchwiz on the S3 is beyond me.

There are some good dialler apps and message apps that have white backgrounds (or customisable) with the t9 dialling aswell. I can't remember the names, but you should have a look if you're interested.
The simple fact that I could not create folders in my app drawer made me flash back

I am running Holo HD but I like touchwiz. Especially the icons, they did an amazing job on the icons. they look so nice now and not preschool like before. So I decided to keep using the touchwiz icons for holo.
Yeah, the thing I love with touchwiz is the message app (stock android'd message app is dead boring), the camera app and a bunch of other stuff.
What kinda is a dealbreaker for me which I can't really decide about is exFAT support. Dumbing down my 64gb microSDXC card kinda feels like a stupid thing to do. exFAT is much faster and allows big chunks to be handled at once (like 16 exabyte chucks instead of 4GB ones)
The whole idea with their Nature UX kinda appeals to me. Soothing alarm and ring tones and beautiful wallpapers. Much better than previous touchwiz's.
i like TouchWiz , tried it on both S2 and S3, i also tried CM9/CM10 on both
I hate the TouchWiz launcher, changing the launcher to something like nova solved my problems.
lol because of this I just reverted back to touchwiz from ADW.
