Major G2 hardware issues - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just had to order my fourth G2 in the past six weeks.
First one developed a striated screen after a week.
Second one would not receive any LTE signal and 3G was often unstable.
Third one seems to get an LTE signal briefly when phone is reprogrammed and tries to do a profile update, but it never completes the update and LTE never shows again. Same instability when trying to get 3G. This one also keeps throwing an error message that it has a bad UICC card. Something about an invalid SIM card. No one at the Sprint store or any of the techs that I called had any idea about how to fix that last thing. And the tech manager at the Sprint Repair center was incredulous that I had found three defective G2s in a row. This last one was tested before I left the store with it due to my previous experience. When I did take it home (after ordering a new one) it was so annoying I just turned it off and re-activated my Galaxy S3.
Anyone else have any sort of experience or am I just lucky?

Your unlucky. But what if that store gave you phones that were returned previously?

4 times in 6 years is doable or I should say "was doable" (Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty).
4 phones in 6 weeks is unthinkable. FOUR???

That's what they are telling me.
The guys at the Sprint store claim that they can't tell whether it's a refurb or not. They say it's so new that they are probably all new. I doubt it.
I'm finding it pretty unbelievable. I know it's not a conspiracy or anything, but this next one had better be perfect or there will be a bit of a scene. I'm not walking out of the there without a 100% working phone.

what are you doing rhat causes this?
skinny jeans maybe with extra small pockets and extra tension on phone?
backpocket while sitting?

I'm also on my third replacement, first one had a bad screen it kept flickering while in a call, second one had radio connection issues, and this one I currently have has the same radio problems and also gets really hot sometimes. The quality control on these phones is bollocks at best, I will never get another LG phone again. It's a shame because I enjoy the speed of the Snapdragon 800 processor, the OIS camera is good and I like the IPS display

I have my 3rd phone coming on Monday. Got my G2 1 month ago and I am going on my 3rd. I love the phone but not sure I could deal with it if it breaks again. For me, I woke up, unplugged my phone, it rebooted and that was it. No wifi, no data, and just kept rebooting. Did a factory reset, which did nothing. So I flashed the 12b on with the LG Flash Tool which wipes out your internal storage. and still nothing. Called Verizon and they are shipping me another phone! Hopefully I get more than 2 weeks out of it! Can't keep starting over every 2 weeks.......

do you use original charger and good electrical outlet?

For the record, I never did anything crazy to them.
I only rooted the first one after the stuff started happening so that I could create a backup to try to install on the second.
Second and third never even got rooted, as I didn't want any bull about having anything that I did creating the flaws.
Each phone was never dropped and in a case it's entire life. Not a scratch. Only used stock cable and chargers (except when in the car).
My fourth one has been almost flawless and confirmed as a 100% new device.
I am having a small issue with the knock/on feature, but I think that's a result of the ROM I'm using now and the way I messed around with it. We'll see when I flash something new this weekend.

Same here, 3G is commonly unstable and keep disconecting, even when connected is very slow.
I have a major issue with reception as well: 2-3 bars in areas when all other phones has full signal strenght (used to have motorola on the same operator for 10 years and never seen a single bar drop in reception) Sometimes even looses reception. !This is the worst anthena on mobile device I'vee ever seen!
It is pretty useless on mobile data, as it never gets strong enough signal to browse
WiFi limited to 72mbps on 2.4Ghz wireless N network (unacceptable)

Maybe it's Sprint? I'm on TMO and LTE and connectivity in general has been blazing and never drops. And still on my first G2.
I've yet to read of this issue until your thread, so hopefully you're able to figure it out. Good luck!

What is the reason you are replacing?
yes this is what I'm doing... i ordered a new phone yesterday, will be delivered by tomorrow according to UPS
I have not needed my G2 replaced under warranty but I have done two swaps on my vibrant so far and both times they have sent a phone first and then I return the defective unit.

Random drops (Edge > 3G > No Data) of signal (without moving). Getting 0 signal when it switches to 3g but when it switches to edge i get full bars. Never did this on my nexus, so I am assuming it is a defect.
I bought the phone out right for the whole price since I'm not on contract. So what I did was went to the local tmo store, bought a new one, checked the hinge and all that, transferred my jam packed memory card, then dropped the old one in the UPS box and returned it under the buyers-remorse policy.
As I understand though, if you bought your phone at a discount you had to drop it in UPS first so that they could reactivate your eligibility for the discount.
My replacement phone actually not only has a functioning hinge, but I'm convinced it runs faster.

Some T-Mo stores can replace it for you. I know I did with my G1 several times. Not all stores have that capability though. Also inventory may be an issue. Call up the ones in your area and ask if you can do a warranty exchange in their store.
I have to do the same thing to get my replacement. Also had the dropping of signal issue, ups tracking says it's already in chicago so I should be getting up bright and early tomorrow to get it. Hopefully this hinge is sturdy!

report back with results, please!
Fyi, I've gotten the random signal drops while on 'WCDMA preferred' and it would drop to 0 bars then come back, on 'WCDMA Only' it never did this . Both tests were done in the same area of perfect hspa+ coverage. This is leading me to believe it to be a software/firmware issue.
To clarify, I'm referring to my G2, not my N1
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I had to go through the same ridiculous process. The rep I spoke to said that I could call back with the tracking number, and then just walk into a retail T-Mo store, have them call CS and get the same price on the phone.
Well, needless to say, that didn't work at all.
Now I'm waiting for what will probably be my second busted-hinge-G2.
Ironically, they just supposedly 'fixed' the Vibrant.
I have the same signal issues and am considering sending for a replacement. My signal will fluctuate and drop completely in places where my MT3G could hold a consistent signal. That also goes for constant switching between GPRS, Edge, and 3G. When trying to listen to streaming radio I get connection errors that I never got before with my old phone.
Judging from the number of people having this issue I don't think I have a "defective" phone per se, just that the G2 radio sucks in general.
I just wanted to add that my first G2 would also constantly jump between 3G and EDGE (more so than the Vibrant and more than the MT3G).
I guess we'll see if #2 is any better.
Nevermind.
I'm not too happy with my phone, considering i paid over $400 for
Would be sending the device back in..
May wait for the new MyTouch which has a front camera and Wi-Fi hotspot feature..
Don't care much about a Physical Keyboard...
Just want to reiterate: PLEASE report back if your replacement phone has better signal reception. I too have the weird problem(?) of my G2's signal fluctuating very often.
It would be very helpful to know if this is a defect of some sort or if the G2 just has a much more sensitive radio.
Well, I went ahead and arranged for my G2 to be sent back for a replacement.
While I was on the phone with the rep I was holding my G2 in one hand and my wife's in the other. Hers fluctuated between 3 & 4 bars and mine between 0 & 2 bars and my data connection kept going from H -> G -> E -> H.
Yesterday I had my phone turn off by itself -- not reboot, just turn off. I've also had multiple occasions where EVERY SINGLE APP I tried to open force-closed and I had to reboot the phone. My wife hasn't had any of these problems with hers so I'm hopeful.
To add insult to injury the CSR that I talked to said that there were no reports of these problems from other customers; I (politely) called BS and pointed towards these and T-Mobile's very own forums. At least the 14-day buyer's remorse resets with the replacement...
I just received a replacement G2 today and was I disappointed!!!!!!!!11 The hinge was even looser than the first one and the signal fluctuation was even more pronounced. The first one would drop from 4 bars of H immediately to 3 bars of G to 2 bars of E and then I bar of H and then to no signal, and so on. A real hassle connecting to Market and downloading something is a real adventure. The replacement fluctuates even more!!!!!!! I called T Mobile and they said they were putting me on a new connection that was needed for the G2 but would not increase my bill. So far it is worse if that is possible, T Mobile also said it would help my Vibrant and my Nexus One as well but so far that is not happening. What a major disappointment on a Phone that could be the Super phone.
Cannot believe they would put out a radio this bad on what was suppose to be a flagship phone for TfMobile. One that they have touted as fastest downloads speeds in the west. I have 14 days to make up my mind but I dont believe they will put out a fix for the problems any time soon. Perhaps not till next YEAR!!!!!. If then

My HTC swap experience....

so I was an unfortunate user who had dust under their screen and it was only getting worse. Rooted and unlocked I decided to go the swap route plus I didnt want to be N1less for a while. Any who, I call up HTC and explain my situation and without a prob I take the swap option. So 3 days later or so I recieve my refurbished N1. Everything looked well. I immediately rooted it with Cyan6 back to my old ways. So I go to play Home Run Derby and the screen goes white for a few seconds and I notice the entire screen has a burnt image on it. You can see the notification bar, the 3G symbol and entire keyboard in portrait mode. I start to notice it more browsing web and what not.
My plan is to call HTC on monday and get another phone as I hope it will not be a problem. I am also glad the new rooting methods are much easier then they were and I can just go back to stock. Lets hope they dont give me a prob with my old one...lol I will report back monday
I had the same dust under screen problem with my original Nexus One and called HTC to do a swap about 3 weeks ago. I received refurbished N1 two weeks after I first called and even before I had sent back the original I turned on the swap one they sent me, put my information in, and it rebooted.
Turns out they sent me a refurbished unit that constantly rebooted so much I couldn't even use it
I called again immediately and HTC said that I would need to send the original phone back (w/ the dust problem) and then a week later they will close out the ticket and then I can call again after that to do another swap on the one they sent me that is constantly rebooting :Sigh:
So I call again a week later once they close out the ticket and get a 3rd Nexus sent out to me. Well once I get the 3rd one I turn it on and lo and behold I can't make any calls unless the phone is on speaker mode!!!
I have a baaaaaaaaaad feeling that I'm just going to continually get sent refurbished units that don't work over and over and I'm not quite sure what to do about it
My experience with a swap hasn't been much better.
I sent my n1 for the power button issue and the swap unit I received was in terrible shape.
* screen burn in
* dust under the screen
* dead pixel
* very loose usb port
Needless to say I called and asked for another device.
All I can say is that their incompetence has led me to have 2 n1s now. Sometimes incompetence leads to good things.
Damn this sounds bad. I hope I don't have these issues. I called and they said I have to wait for the ticket to close. Guess ill report back next week

I doubt you will have any problems with the old one. I sent my unlocked rooted phone back for a power button issue. Did a swap, received a refurbished phone and although it appeared to be fine, I tried recording a video and low and behold all I got was static for sound. I called HTC, explained the problem and within a day or so had another phone which has been fine. The unlocked/rooted phone was not a problem and showed service complete on the website.
If you are returning your phone for valid hardware issues, I doubt very much that HTC is going to give you a problem although I guess YMMV. As long as the HTC Website shows as "service complete", you are good to go on the unlocked/rooted device. I would suggest putting the phone back to factory software and unrooted. That's what I did beforehand. You're right about the newer rooting methods, it is a bit of a challenge to root, but well worth the extra time while alleviating the stress of "What If?" when you need warranty service.
Good Luck!
so my last one cleared and they are sending me a new one as we speak. Ill report back mid next week.
and yes it cleared with an unlocked bootloader running Cyan6 morphed up

The ENTIRE keyboard? Man, you must have gotten a phone from a 12 year old girl if they were using the keyboard that much.
Did 3 swaps earlier this year:
- original phone: bad microphone or something
- 1st replacement: really pink screen
- 2nd replacement: horrible reception
- 3rd replacement slightly pink screen (this is the one I kept)
It is possible to keep the original phone and send in the replacement.
Its been over 2 weeks since I sent back the swap device for another and they still haven't sent out another replacement.
Multiple calls to htc support hasn't gotten me anywhere. They've repeatedly said that they would escalate the issue but nothing results from that.
So far, very disappointed with htc support.
I'm probably going to pick up the mytouch 4g just for the tmobile support which is excellent...

I got two car docks like this.

Your reason for exchange

I just wanted to ask you all why you exchanged your epic to get another one. What problems were you having? I'm on my second one and about to be third. My first one I got 3wks ago and came out of the box with dg27and would not update itself to di18. I did it myself but still I called sprint and talked to tech and they said it was a software issue. I have no idea. Second one came out of the box updated but freezes and backs out of apps. Also if I'm using wifi and turn it off my 3G icon doesn't immediately show up for like hours. Sometimes a battery pull is required to get the 3G to come back on and when it does if I'm downloading something the arrows that show something is being downloaded doesn't light up but it still loads webpages. I'm just worried I'm gonna get another one that won't update itself if I take this one back. I dont mind using odin but i shouldnt have to. What issues did you all have? Do you think if I exchanged mine now that it should come out of the box with di18. It's been out long enough?
I'm on my second one, I was past the 30 days so I was given a refurb. Surprisingly this refurb is better than the new one, which to me is quite weird.
Anyway, I had to return my original one because the Ambient light sensor stopped functioning.
I thought that if it's covered under the manufacturers warranty you got a new one not a refurb? That's what I get for thinking.
Wow. Where do I begin. I had a whole laundry list of problems. Still do. Apparently most were software and may or may not get fixed. But hardware-wise, I had a massive battery drain problem. Bought mine at launch, and Sprint replaced it after the 30 days, and that's without the extended warranty crap. That's good customer service. Finally got one without major problems, but I'm trading mine for an Evo in the next couple days, so it don't matter either way.
I'm on my 4th Epic!!!
My 1st phone the qwerty keyboard got all scratched up from opening & closing. From #3 to #6 all the way to the bottom
The 2nd wouldn't update the PRL, Firmware or Profile! I'd get an error message. It was (according to Sprint) a software problem
On the 3rd my 4G wouln't turn on. I'd pull the notification bar down, hit the 4G icon & nothing would happen. Sprint tech said basically the 4g radio was never "turned on" & it couldn't be fixed at the store. Also the door for the charger didn't click when I opened it so it would slide open & close by itself.
So far my 4th phone is working perfect.

Well I had a hero, than swapped to evo on launch day and 2 weeks ago I swapped to the epic 4g. And I mus say that I am happy w the epic...rooted running stock...
i had 1 replacement, but semi my fault. i used to only use the dock to charge and got a ghost image of the dock clock. see below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/sprint-epic-4g/135478-anybody-wanna-see-image-burnt-my-screen.html
I returned my first unit before I even got to play with it due to some dead pixels. Second unit is almost flawless, but lately I haver noticed that the slider is getting loose. I have tep, but am reluctant to take it in because I can't tell if it's just in my head after reading about other people having that problem.

[Q] "Certified Pre Owned"???

Hey guys, I bought the DX on the day it was released. about 4 months later I started noticing considerable dust under the screen, so I called it in and Verizon was quick to send me another one. Well the first replacement had a broken radio and wouldn't aquire a 3g signal, Verizon sent me another. That one had a broken shutter, a lot of the pictures taken with it would over expose. I stayed with that one for a couple of monthe til it got so bad that all pictures taken in the daylight would overexpose. so last week i got another sent too me. That replacement phone had a broken gps, it wouldn't aquire a signal strong enough to lock on, so verizon sent me another. This one will not recognize any videos on my sd card, it will not take any videos either, it also will not save any pictures, it will take them, then say that its saving the picture, but somehow it doesnt.
I am on phone number 5 and there is another coming tomorrow (cain't wait to see wht's wrong with this one)... Has onyone else had the same experiences with the certified phones? The company that's tasked to fix these is obviously not doing there job...
You got really unlucky back when I had my droid eris it froze up doing the ota to 2.1 and they gave me a preowned phone that worked just fine
Sent from my DROIDX
My first pre-owned had mad reboot issues and none of the troubleshooting methods worked. Got a replacement pre-owned and all is well. Good luck with your next one!
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Verizon is notorious for this - supposedly these certified pre owned phones pass a "100 point inspection", yet somehow most of the phones have obvious problems such as the ones you outlined above. You might have some luck going into the store, explaining your situation, and demanding a brand new one instead of a used one.
a LOT of the "recertified" phones don't actually have anything wrong with them at all. Customers return them before their 30 days is up, or they get sent in for things like a broken battery or broken SD card. So sometimes these "recertified" phones are actually brand new in box, that just never came with an SDcard (or something along those lines).
I think you just got REALLY REALLY unlucky.
Maybe go to a verizon store and give it the "wardo5757 100 point inspection" before you take it home.
What a great thread to read right after I have a replacement shipped (will be here tomorrow). Stupid mini usb port is super loose and won't take a charge.
Who am I kidding though, Verizon replaced 3 of my TP2 device to the point I got a letter saying Assurion would no longer cover me. I have bad luck with phones but have never had a problem with a replacement outside of once or twice. Better luck next time!

Half my screen is frozen sometimes.

To describe this as thoroughly as possible, if my phone is awake and I am using it and this happens, it will freeze whatever I am looking at but only the right side. If the phone is asleep and this happens when I wake it, the right half will be random colored lines and dots, like how televisions fuzz out on a channel you don't get. Pressing against the screen fixes it and it will function normal after that. Also I retain full touch control on that side during the problem. I would take a picture but it happens randomly and the note 4 is my only camera haha.
Any idea what causes this? I really don't want to pay 100 bucks to TMO to replace it, but I will if that is the only option. It is incredibly annoying. Thank you.
My Note 4 has just started to do this today. I made a post about it on reddit and took some pictures. Hopefully this gets bumped so we can get this figured out.

Wooooow
....That second image is my note 4 all over.
Half the screen goes haywire while the left side is frozen. I am unable to do anything to it at this point, and after holding several buttons...the screen goes black...still not able to do anything, and all of a sudden it restarts itself. Sometimes that fixes it for a few seconds. other times I have to remove the battery, wait a few seconds then it's alright for another few minutes. It happens no matter what I'm doing: watching a video, playing a game, answering a call, reading a text, responding to a text, or browsing the internet.
What I ended up doing was opening up the device and fiddling with the cables and connections.
Turns out there's a loose fitting connection in there that I couldn't seem to fit correctly back where it's supposed to go. Maybe there was an error in production and the parts do not fit together. Inside, there are two separate connections that connect the display to the motherboard. If both connections are not secure at the same time, it will simply not work. In my case, only one of the connections was loose. I was unable to fix it. Even though my device is out of warranty and has passed the 30 day return window (I bought it off Amazon), I managed to call them and they determined that it was a hardware failure and I already contacted Samsung customer support on this topic and they were unable to help me (since my model is 910F, the international/European version, they cannot help me) and they were able to create an RA to get a full refund for my phone. I decided I'm going to return it, and since the LG G4 is coming out soon, to just wait for that and ditch Samsung. LG has been good to me so far ever since I had my Nexus 4.
I had the same issue back when I bought my phone in October.
Went into my local Carphone Warehouse and replicated the problem to them and they sent it off for repair.
The repair slip just said that there was a hardware issue and that they had to replace the motherboard.
I believe Samsung offers a 1 year warranty so even if your store warranty has expired you can still get Samsung to fix this for you.
Wish you the best.
I would have had Samsung do it but when I called them they explained that they are unable to help me with my specific model of phone SM-910F (intl.) because it is manufactured for Europe, and that I would have to call Samsung UK to fix the problem/create an RA, and that would require me to be awake at 10pm- 8am or something stupid like that and make an international call to them and I did not want to have to deal with that. If they cannot fix a phone that I bought in the US and that I use in the US and it works fine in the US, then I would not like to do business with them any longer, seems like a stupid thing to do, manufacturing phones only for specific regions and telling people that they're out of luck when they have a problem with the phone if they're not using it in the region it was manufactured for.
so sadly my Note 4 has joined the group of devices with this frozen half grey screen and I am wondering whether anyone has a solution?

Well it's a couple of months since my last update on this frisen screen issue. Sent it off for repairs and sadly the repair notice didn't indicate what was done. I can only say the report said it's a software issue and returned the phone updated to 5.1.1 from kit kat. Haven't had the issue since.
