Just got this net gear high performance router. I connected to the 5 ghz band not the 2.4ghz and it acted like it didn't speed up the browsing much if at all. Download speed was around 2.5mbs. Rechecked to make sure I was on the 5ghz and it was. So I rebooted then rechecked the speed and got around 5.5mbs download speed. But after about 4 5 hours of playing around on the browser its like it starts slowing back down again sometimes so bad the page I'm trying to open just stops and the browser closes. Not force closes. But like I hit the home button. Reboot and its OK for a few hours again. I only keep one tab open to by the way just to keep from using any more memory. If I root and try a different kernel dose anyone know that this will go away?
A 5ghz router will not speed up your browsing over a 2.4ghz router, If you're only getting 5megs down anyways. Now if you had a 100meg connection maybe.
It also will have nothing to do with the fact that the browser gets slow over time.
High speed wireless routers are more about sharing content between computers on your wireless network.

Are you connecting to the router on the 5ghz frequency? Most laptops don't even have this capability.
If there was a lot of 2.4ghz interference around it may have had something to do with it.
Think about it, why would a 5meg connection that you were already maxing out at 802.11g (54mb/s) get any faster at a different frequency?
I'm pretty sure its more of a router issue. Try a different channel. Default is usually 7. If you are in a populated area there are probably a lot of others using that channel as well.
Download wifi manager in the market https://market.android.com/details?id=org.kman.WifiManager&feature=search_result
See which channel is the cleanest and use that one. Hope that helps!

Yes the lap top dose support it. The wife was about to give up on it because it wouldn't do what she wanted it to now its perfectly fine. But I was just wondering why my xoom is slowing down after a while till a reboot. I just did the speed check again on my 2.4 band and it was the same as it used to be around 2.5mbs download speed. Then reconnected to the 5.0 ghz on the dual band wireless router and it jumped up to 6.4 mds download speed on speed test app.
Well I don't know? I was thinking that the 2.4 channel was slower than the 5.0 one but now they are both the same speed. And I was under the impression that 5.0ghz is faster than 2.4ghz but they're not they're just two different channels or frequencies I guess? I've just never delt with one of these fancy wireless routers before just stuck with what was installed by the cable guy. Maybe I can try keeping the cache clean in my browser and see how it dose.
just based on my limited understanding of wireless networking (slash basic physics), the higher frequency has the only benefit if being on a less populated channel. (More traffic means slower soeeds, more intereferemces, missing packets, etc...). I believe that the higher frequecy also degrades faster/ doesn't penetrate walls as well because it carries less energy, but I've never tried it myself. Just see what works best with some trial and error.

Do you fart everytime you play a video? Maybe your nose is getting used to it so it only seems faster. I would hate to walk into your computer room after you've been inthere watching youtube.
I have the exact same problem, I have the netgear wndr3700, and the xoom does slow down after a while and a reboot fixes it. Ive tried both the 5 and 2.4 ghz and its the same story where it won't finish loading pages. I'm actually exchanging my router tomorrow for the wndr3400 because what I have now is overkill for my needs. What router do you have?
i had the same issues with the Linksys E4200. I was upset because my wife's 1st Gen ipad was blowing me out of the water in browsing speed. Then she had to nerve to ask "so why did you spend $600 on this?". Switched to 2.4 and everything is fine now. Better than fine actually. Now that I saw the 5ghz settings I may try again.

have you guys tried flashing dd-wrt over the stock firmware on the netgear?
i have the same router and first thing i did when i got the router was flash dd-wrt on it... think of dd-wrt as a custom rom for your router

Every time i connect nexus 4 to my home wi-fi. Every other device gets terrible connection speed... Before nexus 4 my Nexus 7 had steady speeds up to 20mbps. With nexus 4 connected speeds go down to 5-3 mbps and even when i disconnect n4 from my home wi-fi router still acts really strange and i have to reboot it. Anybody experienced anything like that?

I have three desktop computers, an iPad, an iPod, a Roku unit, and two smartphones sharing the same wifi signal. My speeds don't seem to vary any regardless of the number of devices sharing it at any given time. I would have to call my service provider if I found myself in your situation.

Yep, same.
To the op, I'd say either reboot the router (which you probably have done) and / or see if there's a firmware update for the router.
If no cure, call your internet provider.
Ok.. Forgot to mentioned that n4 also loses wifi connection from time to time.

I have seen this before. It happens in mixed networks (old B laptop used to crash the WiFi AP when G clients were also connected).
1) Check for a firmware update to your router. This is most likely where your issue is. The router speed should drop and increase as needed, but buggy firmware may only keep in last slowest speed until a reboot.
2) Mixed encryption (WPA & WPA2) is a nightmare Force "WPA2 only with AES only" -or- "WPA only with TKIP only". Some clients may try to use WPA with AES and this was what was crashing my AP at the time.
3) If you still have issues, try using "G&N" only, or even force G only. Some older G clients don't hear N traffic, so they just transmit on top of it.
4) Last resort, look for a used router that can run DD-WRT firmware. Personally, I will never go back to OEM router firmware.

i used Wi-Fi Analyzer and it showed 2 really strong signals on the same channel.. one being mine and the other someone's else. i manually changed it from 11 to channel 5 and everything back to normal/// 20mbps just like before!

Hi every one. I just got my N4 last week and i experiense the exact same thing!!!!
this is realy bad because every time i use the wireless network every body in the house starts complaining because my N4 shuts down all connections here.
It works alright with the main router wich is a thomson. but it fails with the other two routers (that are Belkin - N) that are only access points!
I realy want this fixed because not having internet at home is quite bad!

Tablet date of purchase: September 12th
Router: ASUS RT-N66U dual-band (2.4 & 5 Ghz) with latest firmware
Wireless configuration:
- 2.4 Ghz for B/G
- 5 Ghz for N only
Distance from router to tablet: less than 50 ft
Issue: sporadic network connection. I got full Wi-fi signal bars, good Internet connection, but then cut-out and no connection. Back again after 10-20 seconds.
Fix(?): Changed the router configuration for the 5Ghz radio from 20/40 Mhz to 40 Mhz. This seems to tame the problem. I still have sporadic connection, but far less and connection is back again after a few seconds.

I have a TP link single band N router configured for b/g/n. Both my shield portable and shield tablet have issues with wifi. My nexus 7 and my moto g are perfectly fine on it.
I think in my case I've narrowed it down to the router, though. I have a second router upstairs, also tp link single band N (different model). It is configured in bridge mode for the main router. Both shield devices are perfectly fine when connected to it. Unfortunately it only serves a small portion of my house and is much slower over all.
A robust wifi area will hide most any weak wifi. Catch is most areas are not robust.

I'm using a similar setup, but an ASUS RT-AC66U instead of the N66. A frequencies are mixed-mode, and my 5GHz is 20/40Mhz. I can pull a consistent 20 Mbps down usually, without any issues. 50 Mbps down if I'm the only active network user at the time.
Wifi signal is usually at 2 bars, but I'm getting the same signal level out of the Shield Portable, my Nexus 5, and Nexus 7 on my 5Ghz net. My 2.4Ghz net is usually always full strength.

That's interesting. I wonder if my N66U is unable to maintain a stable and consistent 5Ghz connection. So you have no problem with the connection like mien?
Do you use DD-WRT or stock ASUS firmware (what version?). I may end up buying the AC66U just to test it out.
Using a virgin hub which is a netgear i belive, 2.4 is solid even two stories away from the router. 5g is still there 2 stories up but will drop out, only 1 story up it's 1-2 bars but never drops out. 5g band on router set to 38-40ish range.

Don't you need 5Ghz to play GRID? If I use 2.4Ghz, GRID will "complain" and won't start any game I selected.

I have the AC66U as well and have no problems at home but have severe wifi difficulties at work or when hotspotting to my mifi which is annoying.

Stock. Whatever the latest version of firmware is too- I update when it's available.
When I had problems with my Luxor tv connecting changing channel on router from auto to one of the numbered ones fixed it, perhaps it has the bug where your device ends up getting the same IP as the router. Worth a go!
I've only noticed it on 5g but it may happen in 2.4 also. Using a nighthawk router with no problems elsewhere.

I have been noticing this happening several times a day at work and at home. I am sitting 20 feet from my router at work and it has disconnected 2x in the last 5 hours. It will reconnect. Same thing will happen at home and I am sitting even closer to my router.
I've had 1 random reconnect that I've seen having the phone for less than a day.
Supposedly an update for this rolled out today. However I haven't had any issues.

I know I was having the problem, but found out it was because I enabled the my places tab on the edge panel. Basically it was turning off WiFi when at home. I was paying with the tabs, turned it on and forgot about it.

I'm wondering if it is bouncing between 2.4 and 5 ghz bands causing the disconnect. At work we disabled the 5ghz and my phone is fine. At home both bands are enabled and it seems to disconnect and reconnect when I get a certain distance away.

Definitely try this. I have two cable modems and two routers. The routers are identical and the cable modems are different. On one modem/router set, the IPv6 address is passed along perfectly and have no issues. On the other set, the cable modem doesn't get assigned an IPv6 address properly and I will get wifi disconnects, non-working Google Play, etc. Once I shut off IPv6 on that router, both networks work perfectly.
I have Fios and the router is set up with both bands having the same ssid and set up. Works fine with my laptop and tablets. IPv6 is disabled by default. So my only thought is that as I get upstairs and far enough away, the phone is disconnecting from the 5 and connecting to 2.4.

To be clear off the bad, its not the router. Every other device in the house that connects to the 5ghz band works flawlessly. This is a brand new international phone being use with AT&T in the US, calls and texts function fine. Phone is fully updated and so is the router.
Wifi however is only picks up 2.4ghz bands. Not 5ghz.
Wifi analyzers pick up 2.4ghz but when switching to 5ghz I get a messages stating my phone does not support 5ghz. Anyone else with this issue?

2.4GHz has better penetration through walls anyway.
5GHz is really only good if you're in the same room.

5ghz is only good if you're in the same room
The A20 does support dual band, but it's disabled. I tried to enable it by replacing the mx140_wlan.hcf file located at /vendor/etc/wifi/ with the one from the A30 and it worked, but there's a problem.
For some reason the signal range is terrible, to detect a 5 GHz network the phone needs to be next to the router, if it gets some centimeters away the signal drops at the point where the network is not detected anymore.

5ghz wifi is certainly not only good in the same room, check online heatmaps of 2.4 vs 5ghz to compare, it's not a huge difference. Given how much less interference you will get on the 5ghz it often works a lot better than 2.4ghz even at longer ranges. Fix peoples internet for a living and I've seen thousands of peoples speeds double or even triple from changing to 5ghz even when router is on the first floor and they use it on the second.

(I know this doesn't help much with the OP's question but to dispel hearsay I felt it needed to be said.)
I know you don't know me, but I said I resolve peoples internet problems for a living both on supplier and consumer side and have tested this with thousands of customers but you trust a random article with very little info more and don't even bother to look at heat maps? This article has been made by someone who read a blurb about wifi, but they did get one thing right...
"A lot of electronic devices and appliances use the 2.4 GHz frequency, including microwaves, baby monitors, and garage door openers. If you have many of these in your home, or if you live in apartments or condos surrounded by other people, that 2.4 GHz band is likely to be congested, which can damage speed and signal quality."
That list is very short, it also includes lots of computer peripherals, security cameras, smart home devices, walkie talkies, radios, remote controls, wireless handsets (landlines, not mobiles) basically every wireless device you can think of uses 2.4ghz and even your microwave! all these devices on a long range signal means your neighbours devices also overlap to combine together to make the 2.4ghz band for most consumers a disaster for anything requiring more than slow speeds. This goes without even mentioning that the 2.4 ghz band only has 13 channels (3 none overlapping) to spread every wifi device out on to stop interference, in most residential are this is simply not enough. In many cases this is so bad that even next to the router people can lose 80 - 90% of their speeds or have so much interference that even loading webpages takes a long time due to the amount of data being lost.
Like I said before, even if the 5ghz DOES have shorter range, it is not so short that you have to be in the same room, what would be the point? That is a something people assume because it's a "shorter range signal" but it's not that short! the 5ghz is usually faster due to it's naturally higher data rates and more consistent due to the lack of interference from intermittent signals. Most things that interfere with 5ghz are constant and therefore it's much easier to test and know what speed you can get in other rooms away from the router, unlike the 2.4 which has the same issues with passing through anything only with a load of other issues on top too!. The 5ghz also has the advantage of having over 100 wifi channels to spread networks out on to avoid them interfering with each other, a vast upgrade to the 2.4ghz.
Here is an example of a heatmap comparing 2.4 and 5ghz but just looking at any article that goes beyond a very brief description will show you why the 2.4ghz is often so much worse than the 5ghz.

2ldr - It depends on your house and nearby networks, test both bands with different devices in different rooms and compare speeds, outside of doing more thorough testing with other apps and equipment this is the easiest and quickest way to see which will work better.

I fixed this issue on crDroidAndroid-13.0-20221126-a20-v9.0 by copying both mx140_wlan.hcf and mx140.bin taken from this a30 git. Works great on my a20.

No luck. I still have the signal issue
Do it again in the following order maybe ?
1. Download both mx140_wlan.hcf and mx140.bin from the git I gave you above.
2. Turn your wifi off.
3. Reach /vendor/etc/wifi folder using your favorite file browser ( Mine is Mixplorer ).
4. Overwrite both files.
5. Reboot your device.
6. Turn Wifi back on.

I use a Magisk Module instead of directly overwriting the files, but this should make no difference. I believe it may be a hardware difference between our devices. On the schematics the 5GHz antenna seems to be marked as optional, maybe that has something to do.
I tried to put my device next to the router, and when I did it the network got detected (with bad signal tough), I could connect and the download speed oscillated between ~50-200 mbps (my network has 300 mbps). Once I moved further from it, the WiFi disconnected as the signal was lost.
