Questions from a european about carriers in CA & US - Networking

Hello folks
I hope if there's any right place at xda for what I want to ask it is the "networking" subforum... If not then I'd like to apologize.
In the near future (heck in about one week!) I'm starting my journey to America. I'll be in New York for two weeks and then go to Toronto. After two to four weeks there I want to start travelling through Canada (backpacking). And as I have half a year time (or as long as my money suffices ) I really want to go everywhere (except for the far northern part of Canada). Now... I am asking myself what would be the best solution in terms of "connectivity"!?
As I am from small Switzerland I don't really know how it works with different carriers covering different areas because here all the carriers cover the whole country so it's nothing I'd consider when choosing a carrier. Is it like roaming when you're in a region where your carrier doesn't have his own antennas but another one has?
Some other questions are:
0. Will my Sony Xperia Z (bought in Norway ) work in CA & US? (Model Number C6603)
1. Is there any possibility to have a number in NYC and also use it for Canada without a lot of trouble?
2. Would you choose to have a contract (I guess you also call it a plan) or would you go with a prepay card for each of the two countries and just load it with money from time to time?
3. I found this pretty neat site called coveragemapper (unfortunately I cannot post the link... ). According to this site Bell / Telus and Rogers Wireless have the best coverage. Do you think either of them is a good choice?
I know xda is everything but a travelers-forum but I thought everyone who's here really knows the different plans and options from each carrier and how it all works! So I hope that you can help me out with some information!
greets from Switzerland
Michel

You will of course have GSM voice coverage, and decent LTE where it is available. 3G coverage is going to be spotty with that model. North America does not use WCDMA Band I which is the ubiquitous default band in most of the world and that model lacks most of the 3G bands used in the US. (As far as I can tell you only have band V available to you)
Yes, frequency bands in North America are a total mess compared with the rest of the world. (And the pervasiveness of cdmaOne and friends make it even worse)

Hi evildave
Thanks for your reply! Okay, that's good to hear at least it'll work. I do have an old Galaxy Nexus which I could use as well if that's any better. But anyways I won't be depending on my internet connection on my travels. At least hopefully.

You would have more consistent and reliable data service with the Galaxy Nexus (at the cost of peak speed).

Okay, thanks. Actually I dislike the Nexus since I am an audiophile and need a lot of memory space for my music. But I'll see, maybe I'll take it anyways and have it as a spare phone.^^

Telstra 850 version working in USA on 3G

Hi
I stuck my neck out and purchased a Touch HD telstra version from a company in australia. It just came in today and it appears to be working well on the 3G band of ATT. I have the H in the signal bar and DSL report speed test 934 kbs. More to follow.
see this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NPV2LJDG
This is awesome news...please keep us updated and also tell us where you got it from?
Thanks.

WOW, thats compared to my E connection in Chicago that tested at 150K and WIFI at 1100K.
Ouch, I might shed a tear. I'm definitally jelous of 3g in US. Stuck on roughly 230kbps on E with tmobile. Though paying $10 for unlimited data and 200 msgs is nice compared to the move to At&t. Im =( nonetheless, but congrats to you
BTW, anyone know if its a change in hardware or software (like in diamond) that adds the frequency?

Just done the same thing here. Great to hear that you are having success!! thanks for letting us know.
Have you put a new ROM on the thing yet Dutty or something else?
Is the telstra customisation as bad as we have been hearing?
Cheers,
Awesome, please let us know where you got it from. Also, if you don't mind, how much was it with shipping and how long did it take to get.

Took 4 days, should have been 3 but customs held it up--needed a form filled out that I was using it for "testing" (I guess because its not FCC approved). Seller was great.
So far so good, flashed it and testing out some new roms.
3G works fine.
Getting used to the big screen and few buttons(had a polaris).
Damn, this is some amazing news if true....
I just recently got an Xperia X1a, but the HTC Touch HD was definitely my first choice. But the 3G thing was a deal-breaker for me since I really wanted something that was speedy on the browsing.
I absolutely love my X1 but this is making me wonder if I should return it....
MAN, I hope this is just a myth, lol!
How sweet it is
$826 plus shipping is a considerable amount. It doesn't surprise me that the OP is able to get 3G. I wonder where the user is located. It might make a difference if everybody will get 3G in the United States. I wish there was some kind of map / key that would identify where the 850 / 1900 3G signals were at in North America. Congrats on having 3G with the HD in the United States. I am quite jealous I must say.
I am in north Florida.
BTW saw some posts about bluetooth skips.
Using Dutty 1.9 rom and pocket player, perfect sound with a 64 bitpool even with internet usage. Kept the stock radio.

Really? That doesn't surprise you? All the threads I've read in the past were talking about how disappointing it was to not get 3G in the U.S. with the HD. And how it was most likely a hardware issue (although that is still up for debate). Most people were even skeptical about the Aussie version.
I think if you were to hit up an AT&T wireless store, they could show you which areas have the 3G signals, they did for me. Although I'm not sure if they'd be able to specify if it's an 850 signal area.

Exactly. I know where all the 3G areas are in the US they just won't be able to tell me on what frequency.
The Xperia works on the 1900mhz signal only and gets 3G in some areas. That's why I was not surprised.

Ahh, I see I see.
I got a big fat H with a box around it on my Xperia (HSDPA I think), which I was told by another poster is actually a lil faster than 3G.
So does that mean my area has only 1900mhz signal? Or not necessarily...
I'm really considering returning my Xperia now hahahah
Anyone can tell what make the different from the T8285 and T8282, both of them have the same hardware.....how can the T8285 support 3G, i use my T8282 to flash the telstra rom but still cant get the 3G even the model name have changed to T8285. I still dont believe that is the hardware issue

Yet you still don't think it's hardware!?

Telstra T8285 fro EBAY AU Unlocked?
I have been tempted to order it on Ebay as well. It will be my first purchase on Ebay.... From what I can see the Telstra T8285 is the one I want and It says it's unlocked. I plan to pop my AT&T SIM card in and expect it to work on the 850 3g band. Am I missing anything else?? I'm pretty sure the folks who have already bought one have got it from the same source in AU. If I get the nerve to do this I will be selling my T8282.
Thanks

Carrier/SIM-Locked?

Hi!
I was just wondering if the Droid Incredible is Verizon Wireless only? My problem is that I'm from Norway and really interested in this phone, but it isn't available here. So if I import it, will it be SIM-locked?
Or can I wait until a custom ROM is made that is unlocked?
Kind regards!
Its CDMA do you have any CDMA Operator in Norway
Like said above the Droid Incredible is CDMA not GSM. So pertaining to your question, yes it is (in a way) SIM locked as you can't use it on any other carrier.
From what I understand though the HTC Desire may be what you are looking for. From what I hear it is European/GSM version of the Incredible.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
If you have a CDMA carrier than yes there is a way to use it. otherwise your bet bet is to use the desire.
Thanks for the replies. I don't think we have a CDMA carrier here in Norway. And I've been looking into the Desire, but I think the design on Incredible is a bit better. But I'll manage with the Desire
Again, thanks a lot!
There actually is a CDMA/1xEV-DO Rel. 0/1xEV-DO Rev. A provider in Norway, although when I tried to look up their CDMA coverage area online I received a 404 error (it probably doesn't help that I can't read Norwegian to save my life =p). Nordisk Mobiltelefon Norway provides the network via ice. However, I would never recommend a CDMA phone to someone who spends the majority of their time outside of the US or India (I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but if you live in Europe I highly suggest going with a quad-band GSM phone) and even then, you should buy the phone locally to know that you will be with a provider that works with your phone's frequencies.
The exciting thing is LTE looks to be the first real WORLDWIDE band. My guess is that in 5 - 10 years you will be able to travel the world and get fast speeds with excellent quality calls with one phone. That is unless corporate greed gets in the way (Sprint launched the EVO not using LTE but WiMAX because even though though Clearwire has few WiMAX deployed points, there are even less LTE). Regardless of WiMAX being out of the gate first, I have a feeling LTE will win in the end (if not, then we will be left with a CDMA vs. GSM issue again).

Which Tab to Import to Use as Phone/Tablet on AT&T?

If I were to buy a Tab from Europe for use in the United States on AT&T, is there a particular model out there that works on the bands AT&T supports? As I understand it, the phone capability is disabled on the U.S. release, so I'd like to get one that has the capability, since I'm a bluetooth user primarily for phone calls anyway.

If we are lucky the phone is disabled only at the ROM level... In which case we may get it back when flashing
If you want the right 3G bands, I would bet on Telstra (Australia0 or Bell (Canada). The problem is you'll probably end up paying more than US versions
We are on the same boat btw...

What worries me is AT&T has been super slow in announcing its model... We still have no idea when it will be available or how much it will cost
^ Most likely before the holiday shopping season begins. They wont DARE miss it.
What At&t is probably doing is focusing on Windows Phone 7 for a while before switching their marketing over to the Galaxy Tab. Also, let the other carriers market the crap out of their own Galaxy Tabs so At&t stands out from the crowd.
The three carriers will be launching their Tabs only a couple of days from each other. T-Mobile is first, two days later Verizon then 4 days later Sprint.
I would love to get an Euro version to use on AT&T, but they are so damn expensive. The cheapest I've found is $939!!!!

NOT true.
The euro model WILL WORK on at&t's 3G just fine (and will make call just fine) if you live in an area that at&t uses 1900Mhz for its 3G network.
I use it just fine here in the SF Bay Area.
tab
I think if your going to get a tab with no contract the best one to get would be the tmobile one the sim slot is still here so it may just be the rom they mess with,
plus the price is like 599 us why pay 989 plus shipping

It'll be missing on the Sprint and Verizon models as they're CDMA-based and therefore don't use SIM cards.
Hey guys- there is already a post that discusses this question. please be careful about clogging the site up with questions that have already been discussed. (it's upsetting the Russians)
As far as the 850 band goes, it's just as fast and available as the 1900 band. 850 was added to relieve congestion due to IPhone users in 2010. 1900 is still most places and isn't going away.
I wouldn't knock someone because they decided to get the euro version without 850. Clubtech has been rocking out on his for about a month with voice capability unlocked while we are sitting around hoping that the US carrier version can be hacked. That only cost him roughly 50 bucks a week and that drops every day we don't have one. Seems pretty smart at this point and by the time we do get ours and figure out how to unlock the phone the difference in price will be negligible. plus he's already saving for the next gen tab while we wait for this one. And how upset will you be when you find out the hardware is disconnected and we can't get the phone turned on and have to pay the same price 2 months later after already buying the castrated US version. I guess we will find out after Thursday. Also, I heard a nasty rumor that the front facing camera on the AT&T version is removed.
I plan to get the T-Mo version without a contract on Wed and then hand that off to my wife as a Wi-Fi only tab when I can get my hands on the unlocked 850 band model that has phone capability as shown on mobilecity.com or Negrielectronics.com. I don't care what the price is, I just want to rock out on a tab like Clubtech is doing NOW!!!

I thought the release date was November first?
he got the Italian model several weeks ago
I didn't realise they'd launched it there earlier, for some reason I was under the impression it was launched across Europe on the same date.
Only the UK model was delayed untill Nov 1. Italy, Germany and several others have had it since early Oct.
The offical unlocked 850/1900 version was delayed until early 2011. Atleast thats what Samsung told Nergi however, the Bell version is offically coming on Nov 12th and that version has 850/1900 3G bands so there ya go... Full 3G in the USA!
Hi guys... I joined xda to try to figure out the best way to get voice calling in the US on the Tab... so thank you all so much for your information.
In an attempt to see if I have 1900MHz coverage from AT&T in my area... I called their 800 no. (1-800-331-0500) given to me by the local office, cus they didn't know precise coverage areas.
At the 800 number, the rep read from an Oct 10 release (on their MyCustomer Service Portal) where AT&T says that "because the number of customers with 1900MHz only phones is declinging" they are phasing out that frequency in 2010-2011. It's already begun in 30 markets (OKC phase out should be complete by Dec 2 according to the release). (Edited to add: clubtech says that they've been saying this since 2008, and hasn't happened yet.... so maybe it won't? who knows...)
They said they would replace customers' phones as the frequency was phased out if they were 1900MHz only.
And from what I've been able to learn here and elsewhere... it is the 1900MHz frequency that the Galaxy Tab uses, not the 850 frequency (at least on AT&T).
Sooooo.... isn't that lovely?
Looks like a Euro unlocked will not work for too much longer... altho maybe by the time the 1900 bands are phased out, there will be other workarounds.
So it's either back to mobilecity to preorder the 3G unlocked version for $879 (and who knows when that will be in?) or wait to see if the T-Mo version can be flashed to voice calling... which hopefully we will know soon.
btw... in my searching, clubtech was kind enough to enlighten me that the Euro version Tabs on eBay will only work on the 2G network of T-Mobile, which obviously is no good... so heads up on that.
But I must say I am getting even more pissed at the US carriers for making it so difficult to use the phone features of the tablet.

What starts to piss me off is AT&T has still not given any release date. Probably trying to please Apple... Once AT&T's tab is out we'll find out whether the call has been disabled at the hardware level (Given Samsung's history, I kind of doubt it)
But point taken, Cell phones networks (and operators) are at the level of Third World countries in America... (I lived in Hong Kong and Japan before)

Different countries' networks have different strong points and weak points.
In the UK, the biggest upside is the competitive pricing. The biggest downside is the generally poor data services, allowances, prices and speeds.
In the US, the cons seem to be the 50/50 split between two technologies, making matters unnecessarily complex and reducing competition, thus leading to poorer pricing. The pros relate to the superior adoption/acceptance of data usage, more generous allowances, pushing forwards with better network technologies and higher speeds.
Or, at least, that's how I see it.
I'm on the same boat with you Alcibiade. Although I tend to believe it's the collaborative decision, or perhaps more on the Samsung's side, to make the Tab more competitive to the iPad. If you look at the pricing of the Euro/Asia version, it's pretty much no contest against the iPad. For them to sell it here in the State (the home of walmart, Target, etc, and where iPad is from) they really had to take drastic approach to lower it in order to match the iPad. And that leaves u, and me getting frustrated about if we really do have the type of options that Samsung is trying to appeal to the consumer (by offering the same device to different carriers).
From what I can gather, aside from the lack of the voice capability, there are small difference between carriers. Spring and Verizon's version seems to have only 2GB built in memory. The T-Mobile runs on it's own 3G band. And AT&T's version is up in the air. I know for me I definitely need GSM for traveling, so that really leaves me without too much choice.
Albeit maybe i am just in the minority. But i really wish they could make purchasing Tab as easy as buying the iPad.

[Q] Usage of G2 overseas

I know this issue is partly addressed in a thread on not being able to connect to a network after unlock but I just want to share my own experience and disappointment with the G2 after going to Guatemala.
I have rooted my G2 using Visionary and am running Enomther's ROM pre-the Dec 24 update. Not using any other kernels or anything, but the phone is unlocked for use overseas with other SIMs.
Before I went to Guate I realized that I would be unable to get 3G given the bands used in Guatemala are different from what the G2 is capable of (I think Band I and IV). Fine.
However, I went down there and wanted to do some data roaming before I had a chance to get a local SIM card and I kept getting the message "SIM card not registered to this network". I tried all three carriers in Guatemala to no avail.
When I went to get a SIM card from a local carrier it took a lot of effort on their part to get my phone connected to the internet but eventually I was able to score Edge service with one of the carriers down there. Being Guatemala I don't know if this process was difficult due to the way data plans work down there (prepaid) or if there was something specific with the G2 that prevented it from connecting to the network.
But my overall question is why I was not able to roam with the G2 overseas. Clearly the phone worked fine once I put a local SIM card in but the fact that I was totally unable to roam with the G2 using my US T-Mobile SIM card was very disappointing and has me thinking of reactivating my iPhone, which has never had any issue using it overseas, including Guatemala.
Is this a G2 issue or T-Mobile?
You have to enable international roaming with T-Mobile, I discovered that during a trip to Ukraine. Once I did that my subsequent trips I was able to roam but not very well. The easiest and cheapest thing to do was to use a foreign sim for my purposes.
You have to call tmobile and they will give you the unlock code most of the time. Tell then you are going for business or something like that.
Most likely your data and calling bands will work on edge. But your 3g and wannabe 4g will not work.

Woah, weird. I lived in ukraine for 3 years. And yes buying a ukrainian sim card will cost you about 5-10 dollars a month for a crap load of text messages. UMC is best for ukraine imo.
Completely off topic but how did you like living in Ukraine? I would love to live there for awhile. We adopted a little girl from there and then later another from Moscow, I loved Moscow but Russia was so much more expensive than Ukraine was.
Back on topic sort of. I didn't have a smart phone in Ukraine so I didnt use data, but in Moscow I was able to get 3G coverage with my G2. I had Tmobile international roaming enabled on my phone, but my sim would not register on any networks there, I had to pick up a Russian Beeline sim and then was good to go!
From what I understood about mhz bands and services. There are four total most used bands in the entire world 850 900 1800 and 1900. Us in america use two (one under a thousand and one over) and europe uses the opposite ones. So only up until tri and quad band phones started getting much cheaper (probably about 5 years ago) did phone start working in different countrys. Its only smarter honestly, then a company would only need to make on phone for the world. Then they would be losing out on multiple purchases ofc haha.
Google mobile mhz bands. I don't know everything, but I read quite a bit about this maybe 3 years ago when I bought a tri band nokia.
Ukraine, I was there for 2 years for my church. Became fluent in russian. Then went back to date a girl I met while I was there. After that she came twice for 6 month increments on a visitor visa and we got married at the end of the second. Been happily married for almost 2.5 years now.
Bring on the mail order bride jokes, I've heard them all. We r both young, planning on buying a house this year since the economy has really brought those prices down haha. Sorry for the spam! But hopefully your questions are answered.

Thanks for the responses. I will give T-Mobile a call ahead of my next trip overseas. Just odd that a company with such wide global coverage has no international data roaming plans and makes it a pain the keester to get roaming.
They actually do have international data roaming ($15/MB). The key is that you have to have already added international roaming to your account (it's free to add). Then if you have a data plan in the US, they will allow you to have data while roaming. I think US carriers require you to actively enable international roaming instead of enabling it by default due to the potentially high number of complaints about billing charges (e.g., people using their phones internationally without being aware there will be a higher rate). This way, they can state you were properly warned since you have to contact them first.

[Q] 'R' above signal bars. Sound echoes. Phone is from China. No internet.

Please bear in mind that I'm a complete beginner and this is my first smartphone.
I've been wrestling with my phone for months and would really appreciate your help.
I have a 'GooApple V5 3G' (relatively high quality China phone) with Android 2.3.6:
http://www.gooappleblog.com/gooapple-v5-3g-review/
NETWORKING:
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz & WCDMA /HSPDA + 2100MHz
UMTS HSPA 900, 2100 (Global except Americas)
UMTS HSPA 800, 850, 1900, 2100 (Americas)
I live in Sweden and as far as I've read, Swedish operators can use WCDMA on 2100MHz.
Here are the problems I experience:
- On the top of my screen there are three white bars and one gray (I think they should be blue?) and there is a tiny 'R' above the bars.
(I don't know if the 'R' stands for 'Roaming' or for 'Restricted network access'?)
- Whenever I call, I hear "echoes" and it feels like I speak to someone on the other side of the planet, which is extremely annoying for me and the person I talk to.
- In order to get internet to work I have to enable 'Data roaming', which feels risky since it could result in large fees in case I'm on a ferry or near the country border sometimes.
- My operator(Mobil2.se) is quite new, and it in turn uses the network of Sweden's largest operator(Telia.se) (Both companies are Swedish though, and I am in Sweden.)
I've tried contacting Mobil2 about this but gets no reply.
Please help!
The R normally stands for Roaming; I get this on my device (Xperia PLAY) quite often. The issue with the echo's is also something I have experienced, but mine only lasted around 30-45secs and I had that more than once also.
Sorry I couldnt help any more..
PS: Roaming only allows allows the user to get charged more when they "roam" from their usual territory; in your case Sweden, so If you travelled to Norway or any other country you may get charges then..
When you buy crap, you should expect it to work like crap.
Perhaps the phone thinks I'm roaming because mobil2 uses another company's network?
I read somewhere that this phenomenon is called: "national roaming".
Does someone here know more about this?
I don't think the phone is to blame for the echoes. People from other European countries (mostly UK) rave about how good the phone is.

Given the price of it, i somehow doubt there's much quality control during manufacture, it'll be comprised of the cheapest components they could find. You have to pay for quality, you didn't, and now you're paying the price.

Sounds like the words of a bitter person who paid a lot for his phone and don't want to accept there are cheaper phones that work well (if all is configured right).
A funny thing happened yesterday. As soon as I set up a mail-account for the phone, the bars turned green!
The Roaming-symbol is still there though.
Visit GOOAPPLE's service centre, if they have one.
