I need some serious help.

My Nexus one won't turn on. I tried flashing RADIO 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2 that I downloaded from Modaco.
After it failed to install showing the error message like
"Multiple Radio images"
and a few others I try to reboot it.
when trying to reboot it there showed a picture of a android and a orangish arrow and a box.
Help...I think I bricked it.

Can you get into boot loader? Hold down the track ball, then power on, and keep holding down the track ball...
Also, try holding down the "volume down" toggle button while powering on if the track ball method doesn't work...
If both don't do anything but take you to that same screen, let it sit on that screen for a bit, say 10 minutes just in case...
If still nothing, see what happens when you plug your phone into your computer with the data cable, is it recognized? If so, can you get ADB to recognize it?

can u get to the recovery image? if u can, its not bricked.

well I tried plugging it into the computer, I tried the wall charger, and nothing seems to work. The LED doesn't come on, and the button combination doesn't work. So I think it's dead for good. :C Before everything got screwed All I saw was a box and an arrow pointing at a android. Which I think meant it was unboxing. I then thought it froze so I tried to take the battery out, and after that it didn't turn on anymore. No LED, no recovery, no nothing. :C Quite sad.

Why the f are so many people intent on taking their batteries out while the phone is updating? I'm not saying that led to the bricking...but it probably didn't help.

This part takes a few minutes. I am not totally sure what is happening at this point but I'm assuming it's not good to remove battery during this. Mine sat on that screen for a few min and then finished.

Try to boot up with volume down button held. Then use volume arrows to choose recovery and hit power.

Everyone expects everything to be instant these days... "Uh oh! The screen isn't doing anything, it's been at least 20 seconds! I could just wait and leave it for a few minutes like all the guides say to do. Or I could take my battery out...how could that hurt, right?"
For me it took a good 3-4 minutes on the screen with the arrow and the box.
Anyways, if you can't get to the recovery then you might be buying a new N1.

I cant imagine that removing the battery broke it though, he should be able to load a recovery image

If you remove the battery during the period he did, which is when the phone is actually flashing the radio ROM, yes removing the battery can and likely did break it for him. There are 2 ways to brick an Android device, while flashing a radio ROM and while flashing an SPL...
OP, have you tried any of the button combos we have recommended? Have you tried putting your battery in the phone, then without turning it on, putting it on the charger to see if it can charge the battery at least (you said it wasn't even turning on, which is likely because you have a dead battery)... charge the battery first, then try the button combo's we recommended.
And please, when you report back, and not to sound like an ass, do so clearly and systematically (I can't tell from your posts what did or didn't happen, and whether you tried anything we suggested, nor what the current state of the phone is)... so, please use this format to make it clear to us trying to help:
Battery: Charged or Wouldn't Charge (LED will come on if it is charging)
Trackball+Power: Booted into boot loader, yay! or Went to the damn box
Volume down+Power: Booted into fast boot! or Went to the damn box
And remember, you have to hold down the button, either trackball or volume down, then press the power and keep holding down the trackball or volume down until it either goes to boot loader or it goes to the box screen... you might want to even wait for a minute on the box screen(if it goes to that) while holding down the button to make sure it can't get into boot loader...

Okay so I took the battery out, put it back in, and tried charging it. The Battery LED did not come on, so I'm guessing it's not charging.
The Trackball+Power did not work.
The Volume down+Power did not work.
I think I most likely broke it, due to the fact that I took the battery out while it was flashing the radio ROM onto the phone. I kinda did it on a impulse, which is my fault. So do you think it'd be possible if I did contact HTC they'd send me a swap, and not be able to make my phone work or turn on, and everything will go on as if I "broke" it and not unlock it or anything?

It sounds like you have a true brick... disruption of the radio ROM flashing causes lots of bricks, and did so for you.
It is pretty common, at least with T-Mobile with the G1, to call them up and tell them your phone asked you to update, and while updating it froze and won't turn on or charge anymore. Not sure if HTC will handle it the same as T-Mobile did, but if they do they will just send you a new unit, you send the old one back, and you are back up and running... they might ask that you send it to them first, but there is no way for them to test if it was rooted/unlock boot loader if it can't be powered on, so you should be fine.

Sweet. So I called HTC, and they said they'll repair it, but I asked for a swap instead, so I'll be getting one by either Wednesday, or Thursday. Good stuff! I'll tell you all how it goes. :] Now I am stuck with my Nokia N95. Thanks for all your help.

Did you tell them you have an unlocked bootloader?

Yeah, he doesn't have to tell them... but they don't have to cover his phone either.
If they find out it's unlocked after the fact, they can charge you to repair the phone.

How exactly will they know he unlocked the bootloader if the device cannot even properly turn on, unless htc has other methods of being able to "restore" the phone, then he should be rather ok. Am I not looking into this deeply enough? Can the phone turn on with a new battery or something? Does HTC have alternatives ways of checking?

That's my point man.. I don't know. All they have to see is that open padlock and they can deny the claim.

[SOLVED (KIND OF)] Transformer display dead and stock ROM installed - warranty?!

Guys, thanks to all of you - especially frysee, who was a big help via Gtalk - the biggest part of my problem is solved:
My Transformer is still bricked and display won't turn on, but I was able to go back to stock ROM and wipe all personal data. So I won't get any trouble with warranty
If anyone is interested, me or frysee could write a How To for returning to stock ROM and retrieve warranty when screen is dead.

Hi Guys!
I have a problem that is pretty common over at MoDaCo, but I haven't read anything about it here.
My Transformer sometimes doesn't turn on or wake up from sleep mode when turned on already. You can push the power button endlessly and nothing happens. Then suddenly it'll turn on as if nothing had happened.
I had this problem the first time right out of the box, so there's no bad software installed by me, don't know what ASUS did though. Perhaps it's one of the pre-installed apps.
As I said, normally it eventually comes to life again, but now I couldn't turn it on for a whole day! After I had no success, I left it on the charger over night, but still nothing this morning.
I feel I tried everything, pushed Vol Down + Power to go into recovery, pushed Vol Up + Vol Down and plugged USB to go into (useless) flash mode just to see the device to something, but no.
The only things that happen, if I push power:
- if I plug USB, the Windows plug and play sound plays and if I force shutdown the Transformer again (long-press power), the unplug sound plays. The device even appears in the Explorer and I can access SD card, but it only shows empty folders, no files in them.
- When I force-shutdown the device, I hear an internal "click" sound, similar to the one when you switch from front to rear camera, and you hear the speakers turn off. So it seems to initialize everything and stuff...
But all the time the Transformer screen stays dead
Any advice? Really need your help here guys! At MoDaCo there's no answer so far...

I was initially having this problem with my Transformer (it would usually happen when it had gone on standby and it couldn't get it to turn back on again) until I ran the ASUS updates on it - have you been able to update your Transformer on the occasions it did turn on for you?
If you've rooted it and stopped the OTA updates going onto it, you might just have to undo that and get an official ASUS firmware build on there to help fix the problem.

First of all, thx for your answer.
Well as I said, the first time the problem occured, the device was out of the box and untouched before. So I don't think it has to do with something I did.
For me it normally also happened when device was in sleep mode, except the first time out of the box
I installed a custom ROM + Clockworkmod Recovery after that, hoping it'll fix the deep sleep problem. And it really didn't happen again - until now
I didn't turn off OTA updates as I first saw that thread when the device was already dead Perhaps it tried to OTA update itself but I guess I would have to confirm this manually right? And I didn't do that...
Reflashing another ROM or the stock ROM was my first idea, too. But hell, I can't even go to recovery! No matter what I do, press, plug or unplugg, the screen stays black!

yes, being unable to wait for the german release, i imported from uk
adb gives me "device not found". even though i'm not a total noob, i don't know what i have to change to make it work. any advice? sadly i'm working while my tf is charging @home so can't really try something. i only hope you guys have some ideas

Ahh. I didn't realise the screen was completely dead, I thought you had it working some of the time as had happened to me.
If you're seeing it in Explorer, maybe it is just a hardware failure and you'll have to get Asus to look at it...

no i guess that it is indeed the same thing that happened to you, sometimes it worked, sometimes not. only this time it doesn't come back from the not working part I guess you see yours in explorer too if it troubles to get out of deep sleep. i guess it's just the screen that sometimes doesn't turn on for all with that problem. but for me it doesn't even turn on for booting

It's possible. I don't think I tested connecting it to the Explorer while the screen was off, I assumed it just wasn't on.
Can you test it with the HDMI out and see if that shows you what would be on screen?

Yeah, good idea! Will try this asap when I'm back home. Do I have to press something on the TF to enable HDMI output or is it enough to plug it in?

When it seems dead, try holding the power button for about 5 seconds (or whatever time you hold it for when turning it off)
Leave for about 2 minutes then hold power button again (like you do when turning device on) and it should boot.

Tried that a lot of times already. No help.

Phone still won't turn on, but I just realized I cannot only access my SD Card, I can also access internal storage.

I'm getting a mini-hdmi cable today to determine if the screen is broken, because i have the feeling that ***** is booting but not showing anything...But I'll have to send it to ASUS nonetheless. Has anyone ever sent a device in for warranty reasons with custom software (CWM, Custom ROM) on it? What kind of trouble will I have to face?

I'd say try it with the HDMI cable, see if you get anything up on it and if the touchscreen/everything else still works, see if you can get the latest official ROM on there, see if that fixes the problem.
If nothing else, you can then send it back with an official firmware on it.

Try holding the power button for 5-10 sec, then press power + volume down (might be volume up - try both) together for another 5-6 sec. You'll get to a reset screen where it asks you to confirm if you want to wipe everything. press volume down (I think!! - read the screen carefully) instead to boot normally.

Its 10+ seconds for a full power off by the way, nothing shorter than that. If you changed any system files either by flashing or by pushing via ADB then you will have invalidated your warranty. Unless you can restore it to the way it was before you fiddled with it, you'll have an expensive paperweight.

Big bummer And sadly there are no "ASUS Stores" around where I could use a stupid employee who has no clue and is convinced it's hardware related.
Well I don't have my HDMI cable by now and will try this first, but if that doesn't work:
Can someone give me a step-by-step how I can access the restore function of CWM without seeing anything on my device? I did a backup in CWM before installing the custom ROM. Perhaps tell me sth. like this: "press power+vol. down on start, then after approx. x seconds press vol up, wait a bit to make sure CWM started, press vol down twice, to go to recovery, ..."
And can someone do the same for the stock recovery to reset the device? Perhaps there's a chance that a failed OTA update deleted CWM an there's the stock recovery.
I know the chance to save it like this are small, but otherwise a lot of money is lost

On the flip side however, you could probably make some money by being the first to dismantle your device, and sell the photos of the internals to some website like iFixit. Then you could also sell it off as parts on eBay. Obviously it might take more effort than you are willing to give it, but at least it's another option.
If you do decide to open it up I would love to hear what mA rating the battery has on its label. Not being able to find out the actual proper rating from any site has been driving me nuts. I believe it's 6800mA but im not 100% sure.

Won' t turn on! Tried all suggestions

Yes I have read all posts regarding "Screen Of Death" issue and i have tried all the suggestions. But still, my 10.1 won' t turn on. I have left it drain the bat for 2 days now.
Even if i plug it to the charger there is no sign of battery charging. Hence just blank black screen. any other idea before I have to go to the Service Center. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.....

Connect the USB to a Windows computer and press Power + Volume Up for 30seconds. Do you hear a Windows "new hardware found" sound?

Thanks... Tried... Still fail. My PC only signaling found new hardware but fail the installation process. I guess because the tab is still not ON. Help....
It seems my PC recognizes the tab but can't find the driver. I can also feel "warm" near the power button area when i connect it to any electricity but still no TURN ON or BATTERY CHARGING INDICATION.

Have you tried to charge it with the wall charger for at least 2hrs and then unplug it and hold powerbutton 10 sec?

The Power + Volume Up enables the nvflash APX mode, the screen remains totally black. I simply wanted to know if the tablet works and the culprit is just the screen. From what you say, we get the expected results... Windows detects the new hardware so the tablet works.
Now try the opposite: Power + Volume Down, hold it for 30seconds.
If you don't see nothing on the screen, it is probably a screen contact that got lose... you need to service it by Samsung.

yes done that. Still not ON. When I plug it I can feel it is working since I can feel "the warm" but screen still is blank

Then you already know what to do.
No biggie, Samsung will send you a replacement for sure.

yes. In fact now the APX is still working trying to find " a new hardware ". Should I cancel it and try the POWER+VOL DOWN now?

DONE the Power + Volume Down still not ON. BTW the APX Could not find any driver? Is it normal. Before this happens in fact i can transfer any file with my PC through MTP. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully you still know any other solution.... Keep waiting

The APX driver is included into nvflash package, it does not matter if you install it or not at this point. The advantage of this test is that the APX mode keeps the screen off in purpose, while allowing you to flash the tablet through a CMD window (only if you have an unlocked bootloader). We used this trick to determine if the core of your tablet works... we wanted to isolate the problem related to your screen.
I recommend you to contact Samsung and have the tablet serviced. Some screens lose a contact point when you drop the tablet by accident or if a soldering point is weak... The heat generated inside is enough sometimes to sever a lose circuit connection. Either ways, you do NOT want to keep this tablet.
I hope you did not flashed the tablet with some custom ROM, or else Samsung might void your warranty.

OK. Then the only thing i can do is go to SC.......Hmmmmm I am still using stock rom but unfortunately i did root the tab already. Is it bad judgement??? Thanks anyway.
I really hope it is only the screen connection lose issue. But just for curiousity. If only the screen keeps OFF, does it mean I actually can still check that my gtalk on the tab still connects? How this thing works??? since i just check with my phone my gtalk on tab is off.

I bought it from retailer. BTW is there any kind of USB JIG for the tab similar to SGSII? I just thought maybe this can help solve the screen of death issue. Ha ha ha ....

Forget about the JIG or anything else, your screen is gone wacko... What you do now is try to force a blind guy drive a car... Just go exchange the tablet.

I had the same issue but I couldn't return to the store so I went through support. They don't have parts yet so they just send you a different unit. In total it took 2.5 weeks for me and I ended up with an unlocked unit

Damn, it took 2.5 weeks to get a new unit?

The good news is, it's recoverable. The bad news is, it's going to take a long time.
Keep it off the charger.
Hold down the power button to get it cycling through APX mode while plugged into your PC (can hear the USB connection sound in Windows).
Tape the power switch down, verify it's still going into APX mode after taped, then unplug it.
Leave the tablet alone for a few days. Think about puppies, chocolate, bouncing breasts, whatever makes you happy, and forget about the Tab.
Come back, plug it back into the PC, see if you still hear it connect. If so, walk away again, come back the next day.
When it finally stops going into APX mode, plug it into a wall charger and leave it alone for about an hour, it should start charging normally, and once it's got charge showing, it'll power up normally.
Rule of thumb is it'll take about a full day for every 10% of charge that was on the battery when it went down, if you keep the power button taped down.

This is my first post here and I'd really appreciate advice in this matter.
I've spent the past couple of hours searching for an answer but nothing works or totally irrelevant results.
I have a problem where I'd rooted my phone with KingRoot, changed it to SuperSU successfully (restarted my phone several times since then and no issues)
I installed TWRP (only the app) from the Google Play store and that's as far as I got before I powered off my phone to cool down before attempting any installation of TWRP. Powered on my phone and I can't get past the Samsung logo.
Recovery won't come up, Download mode works but restarts itself and volume buttons do nothing to let me confirm download mode and so it's sending me in a loop. Samsung logo and restart again and again. I insert my battery and the first thing that happens is my phone goes on a mission, determined to power itself on only to Bootloop.
No, before anyone suggests it be a hardware issue, it's a brand new phone. There's nothing wrong with the buttons.
If anyone is going to point out the obvious in saying that I'm responsible for rooting my device, I'm aware of this. The rooting procedure was a one-click method which was successful and caused no boot issues after restarting the phone countless times.
Basically:
Bootloop
Can't access recovery
Can't get to Download mode without it getting back into the bootloop after 5 seconds or so. Volume buttons do nothing to confirm download mode.
USB debugging wasn't enabled before this Bootloop occurred
Do I have a paperweight or is there a way to salvage something from this?

The phone isn't supposed to power itself on after inserting the battery.
This behavior is only acceptable when the phone is plugged in while inserting the battery. But even so, the phone wouldn't try to boot up, it would just display the charging animation.

i had a similar problem where my phone would boot up to the white samsung logo as soon as i insert my battery. tirned out the power button was stuck. try gently knocking the power button onto the corner of a table or something with the battery pulled out. it might work for you if your problem is what i think it is.

Thank you for your response but would you like a video to prove that it is in fact attempting to boot up when inserting the battery?

i had a similar problem where my phone would boot up to the white samsung logo as soon as i insert my battery. tirned out the power button was stuck. try gently knocking the power button onto the corner of a table or something with the battery pulled out. it might work for you if your problem is what i think it is.

I tested it on my device (I9505) and it doesn't boot up, it just turns on to display the charging animation. If I want it to boot up I have to hold the power button.
So, in conclusion, it must be your power button.
You can say the phone is new as much as you want, but there is a chance it came with a factory defect.
There might also be a possibility it is refurbished phone, which means it is pseudo-new.

Z5C will not charge at all

In my persistent attempts to put a custom rom on this device, the following sequence occurred:
- Phone suddenly not recognized by PC in any mode: normal, recovery, or fastboot. It would not even charge from the USB port, no reaction at all from the phone or PC that the connection is made. Other devices using the same port and cable work correctly.
- Phone unresponsive to a wall charger while it is powered on. Similar to the above description, the phone does not recognize that it is pulled into a charger at all while it is powered on. However, at this point the
- Phone is responsive to a wall charger after turning it off. The screen shows the charging icon on screen and the LED is red, meaning the phone recognizes the micro-USB connection when it is powered off, but only via the wall charger, still sees nothing when connected to the PC.
With the above criteria I decide to let the device completely discharge its battery, hoping that a full empty to full charge will reset whatever is happening. It takes about 3 days to go completely dead ... moving from screen need-charging image, to only the red LED, to absolutely no response when pressing the power button.
Now I have a phone that is completely unresponsive to any button press, as expected since the battery is completely drained. Unfortunately, it no longer responds to the wall outlet at all. Meaning it won't charge in any way. Used multiple chargers, multiple wall sockets, multiple cables, gave it compliments, etc.
At this point the phone is totally and completely dead and unresponsive to any charging. Any thoughts or help?

I had this issue when trying to flash GreenKernel. Turned out I messed up on a step and flashed it the wrong way. Check my posts in that topic.

Thank you for the response, I was about to throw the phone away. Can you be a little more specific? I see your post here regarding a rebooting loop with red light flashing. However, I don't have any response from the phone whatsoever ... nothing on the screen, or led in top right. It does not accept a charge from 1A or 2A source, it is literally a paper weight right now. I need to "jump start it" or something of this nature. It won't charge at all.

Probably the phone looks dead but does get charge - it's just not showing it with the LED.
I believe Snapdragons are close to impossible to hard-brick - the chip itself has a ROM with EDL burned into it and that can always be used to bring it back from zombieland, if you have the right tools. But if you are lucky enough, then service mode would still be available even without hunting for the EDL stuff.
First, power the phone off for real with the hidden button near the SIM tray - and leave it off.
Then, install Flashtool and use it to flash a stock ROM, as described for instance here. When flashing, choose flashmode instead of fastboot and follow the instructions.

Thank you for the response. I pressed the hidden button in the SIM tray for 10 seconds, 3 times in a row. Downloaded the latest "Emma" Sony Flashtool ... and nothing happens. The software does not recognize any Sony device plugged into the computer. Checked the USB cable, it's good. The computer, and the Sony flash software, do not recognize the device at all. It will not turn on in any way, and it does not appear (based on the screen and LED) to accept a charge at all. It truly seems bricked at this point. Any thoughts?

I don't know what method is used by Sony Emma, sorry. But simply connecting the phone won't surely be enough if there is no software on it that answers to USB requests from your PC.
How about trying with the tool I suggested you? Let the phone off, download a stock firmware and start the flashing in flashmode instead of the standard fastboot mode (just follow the on screen instructions).
If that does not work, the only thing that's left is EDL mode. I've found no documentation for Z5 Compact, unluckily - but any decent repair shop should be able to resurrect it.

I downloaded the flashtool you linked, and also the XperiFerm and latest Z5C drivers as mentioned in the tutorial. The drivers do not have an exe. I can not manually install the drivers because the device is not recognized by the PC at all, it does not show in the Device Manager. Moving forward ... downloaded and installed the Sony Xperia Companion software, it also does not recognize the device at all. The flashtool you linked also does not see the device at all.

Don't throw the phone away!
I fear I was not explicit enough:
1. keep the phone off and disconnected
2. click on the Flash icon, choose the firmware
3. choose flashmode
4. press volume down and only then connect it to the PC
If even this alternative service mode has been wiped, then the only possibility left is EDL. For that, I'd go to a repair shop.

Hi,
Power off the phone : press volume up and power button. Wait 3 vibrations (if not, the phone is powered off).
Press first the volume up and plug the phone with the usb cable into your computer. If you see the blue light you can use Flashtool, if not... it's dead (for me)...
How to use Flashtool is another thing, blue led is essential.
You'd rather throw it away for a Xz2 compact and install Omnirom. You can find some used ones for good prices.

Thanks, Antonio. Step #4 causes no reaction in the phone, or the Flashtool. The software does not recognize the device and the phone remains unresponsive. It truly seems hard bricked to me. I live in Mexico ... this device is rare even in the US, the guys will have never seen it, and their approach to EDL is as good as mine. I'm pretty frustrated with this dead phone, I think it's time for a new one and to mark this as a lesson learned.

Thank you. No blue light under any button combination, charging cable, outlet, software, mean glances, etc. My next one is XZ1 or XZ2 ... I'll take your advice into consideration, the XZ2 has better specs but of course its +$100. I like to think of myself as a capable engineer, but destroying this Z5C has made me pretty hesitant to attempt the same process on a new phone. Everyone seems to agree that hard bricking this device is near impossible, however I beg to differ as look at this dead one on my desk.

Ouch - a real pity.
It really seems you succeded in wiping out all possible accesses for the Sony bootloader. Do you mind me asking how you managed that? I'd like to avoid doing the same mistake.
Qualcomm EDL mode is surely there, but you will need to open the phone and the software for that approach is not freely available (or at least I was not able to find it).

I don't remember the exact sequence, but "fastboot erase" was used on the "bootloader" and "recovery" partitions, then the phone was unplugged. This left the system with no start sequence ... when I depleted all the battery charge it simply wouldn't respond to anything and has since been lifeless. I'll pry it open and take a look at the internals just for fun and to get one last squeeze of value from it. I also plan to bash it with a hammer which will be particularly satisfying.

You can safely overwrite boot, but never ever touch the bootloader. The bootloader is responsible for starting all the various programming modes, as well as passing on execution onto the kernel start during normal boot.
BTW, I don't think there is any reason at all for erasing partitions - when you overwrite them with your own data they will end up being clean anyway.
I also plan to bash it with a hammer which will be particularly satisfying.

While I can understand your frustration, that would be quite silly. Even if it has no value to you, it's still recoverable for anyone with the skills and tools - try to sell it instead, if anything it could be used for spare parts.

I'm trying to find out more information about the emergency recovery mode for Z5C - I might be able to find out a way to recover your phone. If I'm successful (be warned, it's a big if - so please don't count on it), you could sell it as a working phone instead of as a brick.
First problem, I don't know how to enter EDL mode on the Z5C: but I hope an EDL cable could work. I've ordered one for testing, since it's an useful tool for recovering a lot of other phones too - it will take a while to deliver, so don't hold your breath. You could also join me in my experiments (after all, you have nothing to lose) by ordering one yourself (you can find cables for as low as 3$).
Second problem, the software tools. Given the ubiquity of Qualcomm chips, apparently there are quite a few available. In the opensource arena, I've found those:

Hey again, sorry for late reply. Work...
My issue seems totally unrelated to yours. My problem was that I was doing the flashing wrong, instead of just flashing the entire .zip I flashed boot file etc and this is what started the issues with not taking charge, BT wasn't working, wifi etc. But I had more juice in the phone since you want to have quite a bit before doing flashing, but I read your post about discharging it.
If you can't revive it, don't fear rooting and flashing, just make sure to read and to take all steps necessary. I kinda messed up my Z1C and I didn't do any changes to my Z5C until recently. Well, maybe a year now, just because of that occurrence.

Wow, you're a true engineer, never give up! Consider my phone part of your testing devices. Please confirm this is the correct EDL cable to purchase for the Z5C: EDL cable for all Qualcomm phones ... It will take a few weeks to get in my hands.
