Switched to Z1 - Xperia Z1 Compact General

After the plastic back, flash bleed, broken vibro motor and creaky screen/case issues I returned my Z1C to the store.
I paid another £80 to get the Z1 instead.
Much happier. Looking forward now to two years of Xperia life.

GENx bumper from mobilefun

Hi !
Did anyone buy the genX bumper case from mobilefun.co.uk ?
(I'm sorry I can't post direct link because of newbie limitation :'( )
Do you think it is better than the Poetic one ( ?
Thanks !
Pipo
I think it's just a "replica" of the official Google bumper.

I'm not sure : there is a pink version and I don't know if the official one is TPU+polycarbonate...
I've just ordered one of these; I've not got an official bumper to compare to...but I'll report back .
Looks like Mobile Fun also has a GENx hybrid bumper case for the N4. It's more expensive than the Ringke hybrid but I do like the design a bit better.

Ordered on 30th night India time. Delivered today just now via DHL. Looks and feels awesome. Better than original or poetic.

Just got mine, feels really nice and solid. The buttons actually feel like buttons not plastic moulds so you get a nice "click" when you press power or volume controls. From what I've seen on reviews of the official bumper; this one looks identical, so if you're stuck waiting for the Google Bumper and you don't mind spending the extra cash then I highly recommend. Please bear in mind I don't have the official bumper to compare it to.

Hi guys,
Do you know any other sites have these GenX bumpers?
I want the hybrid green but in mobilefun is out of stock...
Thanks.

I got one did a review:
Thought I'd post so that people don't have to make the same mistake I did.
I bought the GenX case because the official one was out of stock at the time. I had the chance to compare it to the official bumper today and here is a quick review.
Pros:
It doesn't look terrible
It greatly improves the clicky-ness of the side buttons
The cutouts for the USB port and headphone jack are well placed and sized
Cons:
It doesn't look nearly as sleek as the official bumper
The bezel is a grey color, as opposed to the chrome-like look of the official bumper (not necessarily a con)
I've used mine for about a week and already the back and front are coming apart
It feels INCREDIBLY cheap to the touch and creaks when bent
It is harder to take on and off the phone because it is less flexible than the official bumper
It doesn't quite fit the phone as nicely as the official
Not 10 minutes after comparing the two bumpers did I decide to order the official one. I already planned on returning the GenX case because of it falling apart.
Bottom Line: If this case were 5 or even 10 dollars it might be worth it. But considering it's even more expensive than the official and that the official bumper is back in stock, there is no way I could ever recommend this bumper over the official bumper.
thanks for the above review!
I guess the verdict is out, I had a poetic that also fell apart, does the official one not fall apart? I can't seem to trust bumpers made of plastic/rubber anymore.

are you constantly taking it off and putting it back on? i have the poetic and it's still in perfect condition. Any two layer case is going to peel if you take it off too much.

I've had an official one for a couple of months. It's been taken on and off about 6 times and I've dropped the phone 4 times with it on from varying heights onto various surfaces. No marks, no splitting on the bumper and no damage to the phone

Hi, I happen to be from Hyderabad too and have been trying to order the GenX bumper case for the Nexus 4, using my debit card (that I've successfully used on numerous occasions online). But the payment gateway always shows an error and it doesn't go through successfully.
Could you shed some light on how you managed to order it. Thanks a lot.

Replacing Z1 screen

Does anyone know how to remove the front glass of the Z1 screen as mine has cracked. I can see that a replacement front glass can be bought for around £35 on ebay.
Ive replaced iphone front screens simply by following youtube vids. However, I cannot find any for the Z1. Is the Z1 screen glued on like the Z or is it a different construction.
Can anyone point me in the direction to a guide.
Thanks

It's not so easy like SE X1 or Atrix , but not so hard too.
But lack of heater may be a problem
What temperature should be to peel it off?

Just use a hairdryer? There is no perfect temperature, just heat it up. This may help... it's similar but remember this video is the Xperia Z, not the Z1.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfXaze8AS2o
Be careful with the videos on youtube for a screen replacement. Many of them was made with already opened devices, that its why the screens seems come out very easily but for real is not that simple. I did this to my HTC and I cry nights and days. Also forget the waterproof feature after doing this.
To get the waterproof feature back you need a press. Somebody had posted sony service docs here a month or so back.
The hardest bit i think will be the sealing part, changing the glass, provided you have prior experience won't be too difficult.

Z3 Owners w/o Dock: How's your USB Flap Going?

Hey All,
Currently i'm on my Z Ultra, still loving it. But one thing that almost always be a concern for me was the USB flap. It was at one time (after nearly 1.5 years of use) coming off from the flap but fortunately with some thin power glue application, i'm able to reattach the flap's rubber back and good news is it still is waterproof.
But to my amazement, it seems like no one from Z3 family has issues about their USB flap going loose or something like that after some time. So is it really that much better? I guess so but i want to hear it directly from you guys
PS: I know that Z3+ is flapless, but if the battery life does decrease, than Z3 with lower price is a much better deal in the near future of my next smarties.

Mine is perfect after 7 months of usage
Well I did have my Z3 replaced on warranty for water damage through the speaker. So I'm not going to put this thing in water again. The build quality is terrible. The glue of the back cover sucks and speakers get really wet and well.. I don't want to wash 700 bucks.
Still, back to your question, the flaps should be in good shape after about 2 years. My Z1 was really solid and the flaps aswell. Been having it for 1.5 years and the flaps were intact.
After 8 months is still perfect on my Z3 D6603.
Though i have extra care of this flap, in order to maximize its durability.
I don't recommend to put the z3 under water... i'm too scared of a fault

Oh man that suck, but i guess it's a case of defect product. Mine has gone submerged countless time. But mostly get washed on kitchen sink to clean the screen from my oily finger.. It's good for you to get fix under warranty. I'd submerge inside a glass full of water under the repairman's eyes just to prove that the fixed Z3 is waterproofed or not. but that's my 2 cents
Wow AFAIK the Z1 has the same construction of USB flap with the Ultra. That's good if it stays fine after all these time. Good on you :good:

Well just like what i typed above I am putting my Z Ultra quite often under water and even with the manually fixed USB flap, the waterproofness is still there so you shouldn't be more afraid than i am
Mine is fine too. Had it since October. Plus they give you an extra flap in the box to replace it.
Had mine for a few months, only used the flap in the first week while I ordered a magtron USB cable from Amazon. Haven't looked back since.

Thanks but yes it's easy just pull it out. I just wanna know if it's durable enough or easily broken.
I removed mine a long time ago. It's a pain to open and close it each time I have to charge it.

Perfect for me too/ I used to own the Xperia Z Ultra and the flaps were poor. They were loose and easy to open.
The same cannot be said about the Z3. The flaps ensure a tight fit and when properly closed it offers perfect protection of water or any other liquid/dust to enter the phone.
Better the flaps being tight than loose, right? Think of it as a woman. Better she is tight than loose.
My USB flap is unflappable. Been using it daily since October.

My wife and I own Z3 Dual each. I've bought bunch of knock-off magnetic charging cables (car, home, bring along) and use USB port to flash new ROMs only. Even multi gigabyte file transfers are done over Wi-Fi only. Beside that, we do have docks, but my wife never uses it because she has no more patience to take forever to seat Z3 in the charging dock cradle so the magnetic port attaches properly (we use cases).
I would never dare to put my Z3 under water after reading so many horror stories. However, it's nice to know that it should survive even heavy rain and humidity in tropics where we travel every year.
Though, I am pissed that I did not wait 6 more months for Z3+ with no flap for USB and avoid getting ****load of accessories I did not have to use with previous phones. I bought my Z3 only a month ago.
Not much credibility here since I've only had my Z3 for about a month. But I did have the first Z before, and the flaps on that was pretty weak. The microSD card would actually push the flap out, I had to run the phone without a card. But I'm impressed by the build of the Z3, it looks like they've improved the flap quality, much better than before and you get a 'sealed' feel when you close it.

First cracked back panel

It seems there is no end to the z5 misfortunes. For me, it's like 5 min I decide to order the compact, then I read another piece of bad news. Then I think it can't be that bad and what other choice of compact waterproof phone do I have, then I read another piece of bad news, and so on. Anyway, Verge reports a cracked back panel. Looks just like my z3 compact.

That's very true but it also doesn't mean that it is not happening often. There were lots of reports with the z3 series. I was hoping that this spontaneous crack issue would be solved
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
Although in this case it is unclear if it was spontaneous or not. He reports that he has an iPhone dock with metal edges on his desk and wonders if the phone might have landed partly on it at a bad angle.
Mind, cracks should still not happen even under such conditions. But it is something different than cracking on its own - this you can at least try to prevent by being careful and/or using a case.
O course, IMO a glass back is still a workbook example of form over function. I much much rather have a "non-premium" plastic back and not having to worry about the back side breaking than the reverse situation.

Or it could be a real issue. It certainly was with the Z3c. I quite often do not agree with the reviews on verge, but automatically disqualifying something because it is posted on that site is a bit too much like fanboyism for me.
Also, someone who is "putting a phone on a table so it accidentally lands at a bad angle on another object" is for me very much not "a user that doesn't know his stuff". Sorry, but a phone which cannot take *that* without getting damaged simply has a design error.
Lets wait an see. It could be an isolated incident or it could be like with its predecessor something relatively common. I for my part will wait till at least Christmas before I but a Z5c. I really want for it to succeed - because if it doesn't we can probably say goodbye to any good android phones sub-5" - but I won't buy it if I have to be afraid it gets damaged each time I do not handle it with kids gloves.
I'm definitely a Sony Xperia fan boy. I love the compacts. I wish they would make compact waterproof phones forever. But even I confess the z3 compact cracked back panel was not just a Crackgate. It was very much real. I really hope it won't be an issue for my soon to order z5 compact.

And i got my z5c today to replace my z3c and i love it! The fingerprint scanner is such a win!
Well I just absolutely annihilated the backing on my two week old z5c.
Carrying boxes, slipped from thigh height onto cement and now looks like a bomb site.
Spiderweb cracks across half the back, glass splinters coming out everywhere.
I know concrete = bad but at least my RAZR m I'm writing from survived that for over a year, including concrete drops, before I put a case on it.
But Christ that back glass is anything but tough.
For the love of god either have insurance or put a case on it. This phone is slippery in any circumstance and one hard surface will ruin your day.
Hoping Sony will be helpful with repairs when I call tomorrow.
Love my phone, hate that they made it this fragile

be happy its just the back tho because the back is easy to replace.
My z5c back just broke.
Took it in my hand. Did nothing.
Heard a click and there it was.
The upside of glass its alot more scratch resistance from plastic even from aluminium
the down side is more sensitive to high heat\cold changes and hits can stutter it more easily
i'vgot silicon case
Well, my Z5C back glass is now a spiderweb of shattered lines. Questions:
1. Where exactly can I get my hands on the original Sony back cover? Even though I am willing to pay Sony in the US to have it replaced, they are telling me they don't have availability to perform out-of-warranty work. They'll call me when they have availability. (Huh?!?)
2. Is the glass back itself part of the waterproofing membrane? When I watched the tear down video of the Z5C, it appears that there is a plastic membrane on the inside surface of the glass back. My basic inquiry is if the shattered back glass in itself renders the phone non-waterproof, or if it is still waterproof?
Thanks!

1. Try Ebay. In europe they are around 10€, much cheaper if you order them from china, however i don't think they are all original. Look for the SONY logo in the middle of the glas.
2. I would say yes. The membrane you saw is probably the adhesive of the back panel https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Parts/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Compact-Back-Cover-Adhesive/IF312-102 if the glas is broken inside the adhesive it should be no more waterproof.
However you can test it by yourself:

Thanks, but I am afraid to order from eBay, because based on seller reviews, there were many people complaining that they either did not get the item after purchase, or the NFC won't work. Many of the sellers blur/censor out the Sony mark. Not quite sure why, but it makes me think that these are not original items.

Never had problems on ebay, sometimes on aliexpress. But till now, everytime when the order didn't arrive, i got a full refund without any problem. So i think it worth a try.
Of course when a seller blur out the logo its normally a bad sign and i would look for another dealer.

Yes, honestly I don't think these phones are meant to survive the repairing. I have a 5 years old HTC DNA and opening the back, I could take apart almost all the modules which I need to replace. The earpiece, earphone jack and recording mic and power button have a separate module.
