Last night I flashed http://galaxys4root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s4-roms/google-play-edition-rom-for-galaxy-s4/. I am on safestrap mk2 i337 4.3 rooted. After I installed the GPE, I did a wipe dalvik and cache then reboot. My Att i337 rebooted the Google boot screen started then it started the Android is updating 115apps. After that it says starting apps and just stays there and doesn't boot any further. I tried to flash Loki doki, different mk2 kernal modules. Nothing I tried could get it to actually start the apps so I can put in wifi password or anything. Usually if a rom is not compatible it doesn't get this far. I feel like this can work since it got so far using safestrap. We don't have any Google play edition roms or kitkat roms and this is closests. Can anyone help me or try to figure this out?

I'll admit, you got further than I would have expected but the facts remain... GPE 4.3 uses a different kernel than touchwiz based 4.3.
Your best best is to install this AOSP theme... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2304251
It will run on goldeneye 20 in the ATT thread or just install a ROM that already has it incorporated, such as Blackbox or Purified.
I haven't seen blackbox or purified anywhere. I'm no developer but it's just SO close it just seems like it can be done. I do understand what your saying though. I just tried because it was basically stock.

I installed safestrap 3.6 as explained in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448942
Everything worked fine, created a new slot with 3Gbyte size. However, I could ntot get custom ROM installed there. I copied ROM .zip file (CARBON-JB-1.8-jflteatt.zip) to internal SD card + gapps -jb-20130813-signed.zip. Got "installation completed" message for both ZIPs, and then :
Updating partition details...

Then when rebooting with newly-flashed ROM slot, the phone does not boot, it is stuck with back screen and the only way to get it back to life is to power-cycle it and boot into stock ROM slot.
Any idea what went wrong?

If you want a good GE 4.3 ROM, try this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2395030
That's what I use as my daily driver. It works great, and is an untouched 4.3 GE ROM, except for the kernel. You can customize it yourself if you want before you install it.

What can you do?
For one thing you can flash a custom rom which is a finished product.
But if you want to fool around with Google Edition roms you can try this little trick,
reboot the phone and toggle the wifi on and off 3 or 4 times waiting about 10 seconds
between toggling. For some people this little trick temporarily fixed the wifi issue.

I am assuming that you have never done an OTA and updated to the official
MF3 4.3 firmware yet, if you have done an OTA MF3 update then ignore this post.
There are no google edition 4.3 roms which are safestrap compatible as of yet.
So far only the Jellybean Touchwiz 4.2.2 custom roms are compatible with it.
The only reason that your phone is working with the google edition rom
is because it's based on version 4.2.2 rom.
None of the developers are going to create a full featured custom google
edition 4.2.2 rom since the official 4.3 firmware is available.
However if you want to try a full featured Touchwiz Jellybean custom rom
which I would highly suggest.
This custom rom is based on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Touchwiz Jellybean 4.2.2 firmware.
It's called "Darthstalker v9" and it's really excellent.
Here is the link to it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426081
(safestrap compatible)
Give it a try, good luck! .

It will explain it all to you in great detail, the thread also has links where you can

Currently there are only three full featured custom roms which are fully compatible with MF3.
Darthstalker v9 is one of them and it was very recently updated.
You will see the links to them on the very first post.

Hi, you said you forgot to flash the kernel modules to get wifi working with MF3, but when you did, wifi was working correctly. I cant FOR THE LIFE of me figure out how to get my wifi working. I flashed the "jflteatt-MF3-modules.zip" file from Hashcode's safestrap forum, but cannot get it to work. Ive also wiped everything and tried flashing the rom and module again, but no luck. Do you have links or can you tell me which kernel I should be flashing please? I really love Darthstalker and this is the only thing holding me back..
EDIT: Nevermind... Thank you anyway.. I re-downloaded the module and re-did the whole flashing process. Its working now.. Weird. Ive done the same thing atleast 5 times.. Oh Well.. Im happy now! :victory:

I didn't see anyone mention it so i'll tell you - this is a simple fix.
If you are running MF3 and are using this GPE Rom 4.2.2 via SafeStrap, you need to simply flash the kernel for MF3 AFTER you've flashed the GPE Rom.
You can A.) Wipe your current Rom-Slot, flash the ROM itself then immediately flash the kernel provided at (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925) ---> Just above "Manually remove SafeStrap"
Or you can B.) Just flash the kernel zip package over the same Rom-Slot you have the Google Play Edition Rom 4.2.2 on.
I am new to flashing so sorry if I have asked some stupid questions.
I have SGH-I337 (ATT) and would like to root and then maybe install Cyanogenmod or any other custom ROM.
Device Details:
Baseband - NC1
Build No. - NC1
Android Version - 4.4.2
I tried to root NC1 directly using motochopper. Then I read and I am now trying to downgrade.
I have got ODIN 3.09 but it does not say support to I337. I have gone through Noob Helper
I have downloaded all zips from Downgrade
After reading the article of Modems; I got confused about my bootloader.
I also have gone through the thread but after that confusion, I did not proceed ahead.
Could anyone please help me?
How to identify boot-loader?
Which ODIN to use or do I need to use SAFETRAP (not sure if bootloader is MF3) ?

Dont worry about Odin saying the device is i9505 or so. The flash will work.
For samsung phones running full stock firmware, all the components have the same version. Since your build is NC1, your bootloader is also NC1.
You are in the right track. Follow the downgrade thread to partial downgrade to MK2. Then use saferoot to root. Then install safestrap v3.72. Then use the deadly venom kitkat magic tool to install any kitkat rom of your choice from this list (post 3).
You cannot install any AOSP based rom. So, no CM. Even google play edition roms dont work.
You can install AOSP themed roms (like BlackBox3.0)

As already stated, no AOSP based roms will work (ROMs that are built by compiling AOSP code). Only TouchWiz based roms will work. If you need AOSP look and feel, you can install an AOSP themed rom.
CM/AOSP on ATT S4 is only possible if you have the MDB/MDL bootloader. Anything above that, it wont work.

So, if I just did a factory reset it would solve my error?

I've tried putting BeanStalk on it and it shows the "SafeStrap Enabled" and then shuts off. So then I did some more searching and put ProjectChaos on it. It'll boot to the custom bootlogo that I've chosen and it just stays there. It won't go past that.
I don't exactly know what I'm doing wrong here...

Check out Mapleleaf rom.... it is tw based and runs beautifully with the googy-max kernel....dumb question but you are wiping between rom changes right?

I am assuming ProjectChaos is TW, I got it installed and it's running nicely.
The only problem I've had thus far (I just got it installed a few hours ago) is when it boots up it says "com.android.phone" has stopped when it boots up.
I had to go back into SS and Fix Permissions and rewipe cache, etc. because I was having a reboot issue. But that solved that.
Thanks for the help everyone!!

Hey all,
So I gave my cousin my old GS4 and it was running GPE fine. I think she accidentally updated it and now its locked. I got safestrap installed now and I'm trying to decide if I should get her a safestrap rom or just stick with what she has now. I don't think there are any serious problems... it seems like a GPE rom and MTP works.
From what I read it seems like all the GPE safestrap roms don't have that working... What do you all think I should do? If you're on safestrap, what roms are you all running?

What makes you think it was updated? If it's still on a GPE with MTP working it should be still on the old bootloader because that requires a custom kernel.

Well when I looked at her phone it was missing xposed and some other things. So I tried getting into TWRP and that was gone too. Couldn't reflash it. Checked the phone info and it said NC1. I was able to install safestrap, so I figured some update got weird. I did get xposed back on it so I think I'll just leave it alone for now.

Might have just been a modem update. Try typing getprop ro.bootloader in Terminal Emulator to be sure. If it's MDL/MDB you're safe to just reflash TWRP whenever.
