Im sick of the verizon bloat and the constant lagging, hanging, stalling and chugging. Will rooting and installing a light-weight ROM improve performance, or am I just limited by the CPU?
In my experience No. I've tried numerous roms from 4.1.2 to 4.4 and stock is still the best in my opinion. I got rid is stock as soon as I bought the phone. Big mistake.
The CPU is very capable, its the software that needs to be tailored for the hardware. Stick with stock rom and Xposed. If you have root, install Titanium backup and freeze every single Verizon/Motorola bloat app you'll never use.
Profit!.

I have a few questions.
I understand there are official updates for our phones 2.1->2.2 but they are operator based. So there are customized roms, that are with custom stuff.
I'm really intereseted in upgrading from 2.1 official rom to a custom, but dont know exactly which one to choose.
I once flashed a 2.2 but it bricked my phone, so i had it repaired (the phone didnt respond to any key combinations or anything at all).
So is there any point to upgrade if there isnt any stable roms.
And also why is everyone waiting for the official update from samsung when there are already 2.2 roms for 5800.
Lagfix seems like a thing to try out, but i want to be sure which rom is the best and so that the basic stuff works.
Don't know about others, but my reason for not upgrading to unofficial/custom ROMs is that I don't want to risk my phone (even if that risk may be small..)..I also don't have time to backup data, reset phone, re-install app.s, do settings again etc. which might be needed in the flashing process.
Besides, from what I read in this forum, none of the ROMs seems to be satisfactory enough & ready for prime time. But frankly, I am losing my patience fast & may soon go for a custom ROM if official upgrade doesn't arrive by end of this month..damn Samsung for taking sooo long..

Thanks for your reply, that's what i wanted to know. I was thinking the same thing that probably the custom roms arent stable enough and that the official update still aint available.
Why don't you use a stock 2.2 ROM like the JPF?

is it safe and works fine just like the default 2.1 that we have in our phones?
Sure ^^ and you cant brick your phone if you dont flash your bootloader^^ jpf also works faster^^ i would recommend to flash a custom rom. Like lestatious one. Everything works well on it^^ have fun

just dont flash the bootloader and you can always reenter download mode.
backing up isn't that big of an issue, titanium backup backs up pretty much everything.
If you're planning on using titanium, just be aware that you should only restore non android apps when switching from eclair to froyo..i tried this and kept getting fc's. Just make backups of stuff in the individual apps like contacts etc, then restore them after you upgrade to froyo. Then make a full titanium backup of everything once you have your phone the way you want it. From then on you can just test any rom you like and always have a quick easy way of getting your stuff back. I recommend using astro to backup titanium so you can have a version to hand after flashing.
P.S. I use jfp ultra clean and it rocks my socks

Ok, i might try out the stock 2.2 rom... But what about lagfixes or are they even neccessary on 2.2?
Cause my current 2.1 stock rom is really laggy, i remove tasks to clean up memory but it's still kinda slow.
Well if you're flashing a stock rom I would definately suggest JPF because it's pretty stable. You don't necessarily need the lagfix though..I personally found it made things a bit strange with random hangs when closing applications. Oh yeah and don't forget to use the modded 3d gallery from SGS Tools (I use the "last" version). You should be able to install it via the "Upgrade stock apps" option. You can also use it to change your GPS pool to Europe if needed.

So the jpf rom isnt europe or just needs some configs like that? But is the stock rom the best option, i don't neccessarily need all those extra stuff like samsung apps and layar etc. Pauri mentioned lestatious rom, its on JPA, for example. Is each one one of those stock roms like an update with still some bugs on them or just converted from other phone updates?
I'm between that custom rom and the JPF stock right now..
Oh it's a european rom, it's just that the default gps pool is set to north america. I installed The modded 3d gallery as a work around for the battery drain bug that the stock gallery has in froyo. Jpf clean is what I'm using till theres a more stable lestat rom because I tried jp9, which was good, but the bloatware...oh my..

one more question, how do i root froyo 2.2 ?
i tried the one click method, after the command running it said everything is fine you're rooted. In recovery mode i tried to install update.zip but it didnt work.
havent see any alternatives for 2.2
can anyone help?
I have been noticing that my google maps acts a little funny but still gives me right directions. The turn by turn doesn't seem to work anymore for example; doesnt tell me when to turn and etc.. And also it always says searching for GPS at the bottom doesnt matter if im inside or outside a building, which was not like that before GB update. Any fixes?
I also had this problem , I factory reset and the problem was still there. I ended up rooting my device and getting an app called faster fix which fixes the gps problems.
I don't know if thats the way you want to go, it was the only way I got it to work properly , plus you can lose all network bloat if you have a branded device
Also I saw this which may be of interest?

I've had my EVO for a while, rooted and working great with Froyo 2.2 on it. My music player app required root to be installed (miui i think is the name) Earlier this year, I updated to GB and i've had nothing but problems. Still root, flashed an RUU on here that was rooted already.
Music player force closes randomly, facebook has connection errors, other apps force close for no apparent reason. Phone has gotten extremely sluggish even after wiping cache/deleting all texts. Basically, I'd love to know which is the newest RUU I can flash that's got root still. I want a clean fresh install and hopefully that will solve my problems.
I recently acquired an HTC HD2 for $100.00 from craigslist. Refurbished phone with WM6.5 on it. I got WP7 working on it and I'm jealous of how fast and smooth it is. Too bad WP7 couldn't work on our EVO's... alas, I doubt we'll ever see that day.

As long as you're s-off, you can flash the official RUU and still maintain root. Search the threads in the dev section and download the 4.24 RUU and you'll be g2g. I just did it with my fiancee's and she still has root.
Yes Marty, I built a time machine out of a DeLorean.
Or you can just do a full wipe and flash the stock rooted rom (or any other rom) through recovery. If you like froyo more than gb, try something like Myn's Warm 2.2 or Sprint Lovers - they're pretty close to stock.
You can backup your apps/data with Titanium Backup, but don't restore any system stuff. I'd also advise against batch restoring your apps. Just restore apps as you need them and you'll be surprised how many apps you don't need and how much faster your phone will be.
If your phone still feels sluggish, try increasing the vm heap size to ~40-48. You can do so with the app "VM Heap Tool".

Thank you all for the quick replies. I'm getting very close to just going with CyanogenMod again since it worked so good on my Hero.(Is it true they got 4G working?) I'm getting fed up with the force closes. A lot of them are related to superuser which is getting root priviledges from the OS, correct? I wonder if I could have S-off but somehow not be nand unlocked, could that be causing this issue or am I being dumb. (feel free to call me dumb, i'll admit average knowledge of mobile phone OS architecture)

I might have to make the switch to CyanogenMod... I'm sure it has less bloatware installed on it. I use ADWlauncher instead of Sense... not sure what else I'd be missing with the change
No.
I was under the impression when an app loads and needs SU priviledge, it communicates with the superuser app and is run under root permissions if approved. I try to run apps that require root and they crash at this step (which I thought was necessary) and then won't perform root functions. Was I mislead?

Cool, I wasn't sure because I rooted so long ago, I forget the terms anymore. I should probably refresh myself with the basics of android modification.
Thank you all for the help you've provided, and hopefully others find something useful from this thread as well.
Hi, i'm a little bit scared about modifying it. Is there a real big difference in performance between the stock rom and a custom with a kernel at stock frequencies? And i've seen a lot of methods about unlocking/rooting it, but i am scared if i brick it... Is there a 100% safe method to unlock and root it? And i've heard about a problem with the buggy stock recovery, will i have this problem if i flash cwm?
Sorry for the huge number of questions and for my bad english
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Personally I found that there is not a great deal of difference between stock ROM and many of the custom ROMs out there. For me it is more to do with having the freedom to get tore into the tablet.
There is never a 100% guarantee that yo won't mess up when rooting and installing custom software, however the vast majority of users on here have managed to do it safely with the tools available.
If you are going down the path of rooting and customs, may I suggest you give the team EOS ROM a try coupled with Franco kernel. They work together like a dream. Also paranoid android ROM for something different . Though I found it to be a little slow for my liking.
Finally clemsyns elite kernel if you want crazy performance, but it does eat the battery
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Rooting is quite painless and reasonably safe if you follow the directions closely. The one click rooting methods, elsewhere in this forum...work well.
Myself, I prefer the stock rom. The custom roms might offer better performance, but can be buggy at times. although. I do switch back and forth to try them out. Remember, these roms
are all works in progress, so do not be surprised if something does not work the way you think
it should.
Thanks for the answers. I'm thinking about only rooting it. Will i receive the ota for a new update?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
As long as you keep the stock recovery you can keep doing ota updates
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
In my experience, OTA never worked to well.. but there are ways around it, for example... backing up your apps, then load a fresh updated factory image. then just restore your apps..
Titanium backup is one such app, but there are others .
So far no matter what I try I cant brick it oh I can get it stuck but theres always a way to fix it. And like some others here I have tried I believe every ROM out there. Not one really stands out "different" for ME then any other. Nexus root toolkit is by far the easiest to use for me. If your into battery life so far Stock wins hands down.
Unlocking and rooting the Nexus is really simple and pretty much foolproof. I'll admit there isn't that much of a difference between stock and custom ROMs because the N7 with JB is already a beast. I just like custom ROMs because you have the ability to make it faster if you want to (I have my CPU over clocked by 500 MHz and my GPU over clocked by 300 MHz thanks to clemsyn's elite kernel) the only reasons why I wanted to put a custom ROM on this was because I missed the 3 in 1 shutdown menu and the ability to remove the notification shae toggles, other than that I don't mess with much because JB is already buttery smooth. Gone are the days when you have to root, OC and install custom ROMs just to get good performance out of your device like I had to do with the OG droid.
I would definitely at least root the device for the time being. Aside from some customization options in a few custom ROMs I actually really enjoy stock on my N7... I would also take a look at ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905961 once you have it all ready to go... I found it made an improvement to my Wifi and GPS by a fair bit, no custom rom needed.
My wife has a razr M running FXZ 182. I've de-bloated it as much as possible and it still runs like garbage. Her phone will randomly reboot throughout the day, sometimes it won't answer calls, when she charges it it gets very hot, the camera sometimes crashes too. Overall it's a pretty terrible phone. She really wants a Nexus 5 like I have but we can't afford it right now.
Are there any daily driver roms that just work, I don't care about fancy features or even latest android (although it would be nice). She just needs something that doesn't rape the battery, will snap a photo once and a while and take/make calls.

I've personally had the best luck with BlissStalk on KKBL (What you're on). I plan on flashing it to my SO's xt907 as well. I suggest Bliss with PA Gapps Mini Modular package (frees up RAM, great for our 1GB device). No major issues, baked in root and other good customization. I get about 12-14 hours on a typical use day.
Another option is the Google Play Edition FXZ. It is a fully debloated and deodexed official FXZ with some performance mods built in, pretty good performance and stability, but it is based off of the official firmware and will contain some of the same bugs the official firmware has.
You are on an unlocked bootloader, right?

I don't know but I've tried bliss stalk but even that had stability issues... I came back to jelly bean but it had data issues so I flashed the official by rsd ... I'm using xposed with it now, I must say it's the most stable rom for this phone. I get an entire day with decent usage with music and browsing facebook.
What I think is maybe you need to format the phone or re flash stock through rsd. Try going back to 4.1.2 then upgrade officially through the phone... It should be spot on. I still say stock 4.4 is your best bet. I haven't tried 5.0... I will once it's stable enough and the bugs are all sorted out. But it's my daily phone and its serving me very well.

5.0's biggest problem is that we have a device with only 1GB of RAM. If you keep everything minimalistic, it runs alright, but it quickly drags with multitasking. Other than memory management, it runs great. Autodims, Bluetooth works, WiFi works, signal issued are at a minimal.

True but if the dude is looking for something stable enough without issues for his wife I think stock 4.4 is still the best bet. I've got more than a 100 apps installed and it runs without any issues... No signal issues... 5.0 is still in beta which is why some things need to be polished.
