I have a few questions.
I understand there are official updates for our phones 2.1->2.2 but they are operator based. So there are customized roms, that are with custom stuff.
I'm really intereseted in upgrading from 2.1 official rom to a custom, but dont know exactly which one to choose.
I once flashed a 2.2 but it bricked my phone, so i had it repaired (the phone didnt respond to any key combinations or anything at all).
So is there any point to upgrade if there isnt any stable roms.
And also why is everyone waiting for the official update from samsung when there are already 2.2 roms for 5800.
Lagfix seems like a thing to try out, but i want to be sure which rom is the best and so that the basic stuff works.
Don't know about others, but my reason for not upgrading to unofficial/custom ROMs is that I don't want to risk my phone (even if that risk may be small..)..I also don't have time to backup data, reset phone, re-install app.s, do settings again etc. which might be needed in the flashing process.
Besides, from what I read in this forum, none of the ROMs seems to be satisfactory enough & ready for prime time. But frankly, I am losing my patience fast & may soon go for a custom ROM if official upgrade doesn't arrive by end of this month..damn Samsung for taking sooo long..

Thanks for your reply, that's what i wanted to know. I was thinking the same thing that probably the custom roms arent stable enough and that the official update still aint available.
Why don't you use a stock 2.2 ROM like the JPF?

is it safe and works fine just like the default 2.1 that we have in our phones?
Sure ^^ and you cant brick your phone if you dont flash your bootloader^^ jpf also works faster^^ i would recommend to flash a custom rom. Like lestatious one. Everything works well on it^^ have fun

just dont flash the bootloader and you can always reenter download mode.
backing up isn't that big of an issue, titanium backup backs up pretty much everything.
If you're planning on using titanium, just be aware that you should only restore non android apps when switching from eclair to froyo..i tried this and kept getting fc's. Just make backups of stuff in the individual apps like contacts etc, then restore them after you upgrade to froyo. Then make a full titanium backup of everything once you have your phone the way you want it. From then on you can just test any rom you like and always have a quick easy way of getting your stuff back. I recommend using astro to backup titanium so you can have a version to hand after flashing.
P.S. I use jfp ultra clean and it rocks my socks

Ok, i might try out the stock 2.2 rom... But what about lagfixes or are they even neccessary on 2.2?
Cause my current 2.1 stock rom is really laggy, i remove tasks to clean up memory but it's still kinda slow.
Well if you're flashing a stock rom I would definately suggest JPF because it's pretty stable. You don't necessarily need the lagfix though..I personally found it made things a bit strange with random hangs when closing applications. Oh yeah and don't forget to use the modded 3d gallery from SGS Tools (I use the "last" version). You should be able to install it via the "Upgrade stock apps" option. You can also use it to change your GPS pool to Europe if needed.

So the jpf rom isnt europe or just needs some configs like that? But is the stock rom the best option, i don't neccessarily need all those extra stuff like samsung apps and layar etc. Pauri mentioned lestatious rom, its on JPA, for example. Is each one one of those stock roms like an update with still some bugs on them or just converted from other phone updates?
I'm between that custom rom and the JPF stock right now..
Oh it's a european rom, it's just that the default gps pool is set to north america. I installed The modded 3d gallery as a work around for the battery drain bug that the stock gallery has in froyo. Jpf clean is what I'm using till theres a more stable lestat rom because I tried jp9, which was good, but the bloatware...oh my..

i flashed the JPF and so far so good. It's atleast twice as fast as the stock 2.1 i had. Thanks you all for help
one more question, how do i root froyo 2.2 ?
i tried the one click method, after the command running it said everything is fine you're rooted. In recovery mode i tried to install update.zip but it didnt work.
havent see any alternatives for 2.2
can anyone help?
Hello forumites. I did have a thread on the dev forum regarding this but it got deleted (don't know why?) and had little - no - response. Here's hoping this thread bears more fruit... I mean, surely I'm not the only one trying to get this app running?
Bottom line in case you don't know is that you need to use this version of the app and use OTA Voodoo Rootkeeper to hide the root before using the app (Sky has blocked rooted phones from working).
Problem No. 2 seems to be that Sky checks for custom ROMs and kernels so it is very hit and miss as to which handsets will work. So far I have tested MIUI (unsuccessful), MS2Ginger 3.0 (successful but didn't like the ROM) and stock UK GB (via santi's Nandroid backup - unsuccessful). Some guy here has managed to get the app going on a stock ROM so I'm currently flashing the SBF via RSD Lite to see if I get any more joy.
Anyone else here had a go at getting Sky Go working? If so, which ROM are you rocking?
I can assure you it works on the stock rom with Voodoo, eventhough the ROM is pants while Skygo works I will keep it!
I have a Argent3.0stone... I will try
I have MIUI, i will try too..
Managed to get it running by flashing a UK GB SBF but the stock ROM is god-awful. Anyone tried running it under CM9? I know that ICS isn't officially supported but I have heard reports of it working.
Don't use the universal de-blur script because Sky Go doesn't work anymore, only news no sport, it thinks its rooted even with voodoo :-(
Good evening all,
Basically I'm looking to root my girlfriends fathers U8800, it's currently running android 2.2. He's complained that its got major battery drain so I figure I can find a ROM here that can help that.
I've read there are 3 different types of models for this handset. How do I know which one we've got? If that's relevant?
I've found this thread that seems dead easy to follow, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420728 , am I ok to proceed?
When I've rooted it, do I just flash a rom via CWM like I would with my galaxy s? And will I be caught out with bootloader issues or little things like that?
Thanks in advance.
If the device is the U8800 regular model(not pro or plus) you can follow the guides of the link.
And yes, you can flash a rom from cwm recovery.
Only one suggestion. If you flash the latest stock gingerbread rom(I think is the 522), search for a thread called "get your pink screen back" on developing section. The after 518 versions have the bootloader locked, and on the above thread you will find how to flash the unlocked bootloader from 518 stock rom.
Thanks for that, I'll get on it tomorrow with an operational head. I'll do the pre root checks and make sure I have everything I need in place before I get going.

If the device is not yours I suggest you to do nothing. There's no better Rom, in terms of bug free than the original one.
Custom roms always have this or that and will require attention, which I'm sure your fatherin law can live better without these issues and concerns.
This devices have an high consumption and he has to get used to it.
Now if the device was yours meaning you would be using it daily, than i would advise you to install aurora. I don't like it but have to admit that is very good and stable.

Did you look to see what is causing the battery drain? I have a friend with a stock GT540 that had serious battery drain. Turns out it was the GoSMS program. Deleted the app and now his phone lasts 5 days between charges. Switching a rom won't help if the problem is an app.
1) Get cpu spy and see if it is going to deep sleep
2) If not sleeping, turn off running applications one by one and test via cpu spy to find out which one is causing it not to sleep.
3) Either remove the offending app or use Autorun Manager to modify the receivers (if rooted)
You can fix his problem without changing his rom. If he wants root, superoneclick can root 2.2, I just used it the other day. Also make sure he is on the latest 2.2: b138sp04 or b163. I prefer b163, even though it is the China rom, because I like the Huawei launcher better that stock.

That's not true... official 2.2 is the slowest thing in existence. If he just needs stability then Ezets CM7 is the answer. There are no bugs with it (except wifi tethering) and it's much much faster than stock...
Also he can undervoltage it to preserve battery life more than stock ROM.
Sent from my U8800
You want the best 2.2 you try Void Eridanus. Everything works.
Want the speed, OEX rom it's a Ferrari. Everything works less the mms with data off.
You can also keep the stock Rom, root it and just apply a ffranco kernel. This way you gain the speed.
3 good solutions here.
I'm don't revert to stock Rom for 2 reasons, cam quality and battery life, otherwise i would use stock Rom without a shadow of a doubt.
In terms of stability and all working it's stock 2.2 Rom and this is unquestionable!!!
I have been trying ALL roms and ALL respective versions since July 2011 therefore I do speak by personal extended experience
I repeat once again, in the conditions you mention leave the phone as it is. If you want to do something just root it and that's it.
as a matter of facts i had my phone with so many rooms that i can even say how many but if u want stability i recomend oxygen... if u want stability and good looks use miui 32...
last .32 miui that i used was from miui portugal in english and nothing to say about that...
battery for 2 days and all smoth...
but my phone is weird... he can take almost every rom and be usable...
The issue with miui pt versions it's the cam quality that is horrible. It's just this detail that it's not very good. The rest it's perfect.

Hey everyone, back for an update and some other steps. basically, he got frustrated with how the battery so he went out today and bought the newer huawei. Reading eveyones comments here i think its due to the ammount of apps and being on froyo hasn't helped any thing, but anyways its now my new toy to play with. So far, followed the link i posted in the first thread, rooted and installed the latest CWM (v5). I'm now a little confused when it comes to the get the pink screen back, should i follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457490 now before flashing a new rom or afterwards?
Again thanks for all the help, I'm almost done bothering you all for now
Edit: Reading on some ROM's and the comments above, i should install B518 stock ROM then flash the bootloader fix from the thread posted above then i can install other ROM's? If so where can i get the stock B518 ROM and how do i know which version I'm using? Sorry and thanks again.
First, which rom you have now?
You can find the version from settings -> about phone.
If you have a newer than 518 version you need to change the bootloader with the one from 518. If you have 518 you don't.
Also check which version of kernel you have(is on about phone also)
If you have a 2.6.32 version(which mean that you have froyo rom), you can flash only roms with this kernel version. If you have a 2.6.35 version, you can flash roms with 2.6.35 kernel or 3.0.8(as aurora ICS).
Basically its a stock froyo rom, im looking to get to gingerbread by the end of tonight but currently im stuck on the huawei splash screen after i did a data reset in CWM. Can still get to CWM though.
What rom you want to flash now?
A custom gingerbread based of froyo's kernel 2.6.32 like CM7.2, oxygen or miui, or the official gingerbread?
Im not particularly bothered, something that won't brick the phone and is stable. I'm more worried as to why it wont boot now after a data reset.. any suggestions for that?
You can use adb and logcat function to see where the problem is. Usually when some errors prevent device to complete the boot proccess, this piece of code loops. You need to have some knowledge of programming though, but maybe is something easy.
and now i have blue screen.. what can i do? or have i bricked it?
Where you have blue screen and what you did?
Usually blue screen instead of recovery mode, means that the recovery.img is deleted from .cust_backup/Image folder
basically, i formatted something, reboot and soon as the huawei logo appear a blue scrren rolls down. when i plug the phone into the pc it detects a folder but its empty, the phone is detected as qualcomm now..
Yes, seems that you formated the partition which has the Image folder with all system images. So, now you need to flash an official rom. You can either flash a froyo or a gingerbread rom. You can avoid this only if you previous had take a backup of this folder. In this case just put all files in (empty now) image folder.
Most of the experianced users may already be aware of this method, but I'm posting this for the benefit of the new users.
Many of you might be familiar with the issue of GPS not turning on after a new ROM flash. Mostly on CM7 and its based-on ROMs. This could be fixed by flashing radios ( haven't tried flashing radios myself ).
But here is an easy way to get GPS working without any trouble.
1). Make a nadroid backup of your current rom if necessary and flash a ROM with working GPS ( a sense ROM or CM6) , if your current ROM has no issues with turning GPS on, skip this step,
2). Open Maps or similar app an wait for a stable GPS fix,
3). Without leaving the Maps or the app you used, turn the phone off. ( GPS must be on as we shutdown the phone)
3). Boot into recovery and flash your new ROM as usual or restore your previous backup,
4). Boot in to the ROM, you'll have GPS working..
Follow steps 2-4 everytime you flash a new ROM to get the GPS working.
Cheers..

When i had my wildfire i used the radio method first, then the rom one as it was quicker and less dangerous. this will be particularly useful to people with s-on who cannot flash the radio

Sorry to bump and old thread but, just out of curiosity would I have to flash a new cm 7 to trigger the GPS or could I restord a nandroind backup instead (obviously after flashing the cm 6 or sense based rom). If the answer's no, could I instead flash the new cm 7 and gapps but advanced restore my data so I can get my apps back (don't know if this will mean having two Google apps because i don't know whether its stored in data or system). Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you how happy I am! I have a galaxy note 2 from verizon and my gps stopped working about a month and a half ago after flashing a new rom. I thought it was a hardware issue because I couldn't find anything online and considering it was acting up on the previous rom. Keep in mind I used an app called GPS Test and could not find a single satellite even after trying in different outdoor locations. I fixed my phone by following steps 2-3 after making a backup of my current rom, and restored a backup of my first rom using TWRP. Once I had that rom installed I used GPS Test to see if it found any satellites and it did! I followed step 2-3 again and restored the rom from the backup I had just made and opened up GPS Test and it worked!!!!!!!!!! Can't tell you how happy I am! I was about to get a new device, a navigation is necessary for me. Honestly, Thank You!!!!!!

Hi Lads!
I'm experiencing problems with my HTC sensation. I've installed newest ROM and gapps from Albinoman887 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2524961). My GPS works just fine if I'm using WiFi or data network, unfortunately I don't have an internet plan so I can only use WiFi when in range. No matter how long I would wait google maps (I've saved offline map) or Garmin/TomTom wont connect with GPS. I've tried to connect it in not urbanised area, were i wasn't surrounded by building or high trees.I was switching between 'device only' and 'assited with WiFi and network data' but since I don't have internet connection I think it makes no difference. I had this problem as well on - cm-10.1-20130610-Albinoman887-pyramid , but as I had internet plan wasn't bothered about that. Did you face similar problem ? Would you know how to fix that issue ?

Have you tried this procedure? Could possibly be the same issue as you also have a HTC device.
Also, Network Location should work regardless of the data connection status, as it gathers location data from Signal Towers to determine your approximate location.

Hi guys id love input on this one if anyone's got anything as it baffles and frustrates me...
I have a SM-N9005,
im signed upto galaxynote3root.com
my note 3 ran to perfection once rooted and updated to 4.4.2 va the polish rom that came out since im in UK and couldn't wait for the update hehe - still ran to perfection -
I then flashed a ROM from galaxynote3root.com (I now HATE that zedomax guy since he has not input or suggestions on the matter despite a courteously written email etc) it was "infamous ROM" (which is supposed to be for SM-N9005 but when installed all T-Mobile bloatware is on it and then model displayed in the about settings page says "SM-N900T") flashed it and installed trickster MOD, (didn't check or even think that the GPS didn't work at that point) I then set the voltage to offset -25 as instructed by zedomax for better battery life etc... anyway, my note 3 couldn't really handle the change in voltages so I went back to stock (or what I thought was stock since I didn't check the default voltages before changing and I don't know what they are) after deciding... I actually hated the ROM and flash all the way back to stock
GPS NO LONGER works - ill explain exact symptoms etc
GPS icon flashes - notification displays "searching for GPS" and........... that's it.. forever.... never locks...... and whilst using the GPS and using google maps in this state it constantly says "GPS signal lost" - and that is literally it. I have flashed at least 5 different stock ROMS from different countries/carriers etc - nothing always exactly the same
NOW... here's the weird part!!!????
Once I flash the Infamous ROM back onto the phone - THE GPS works....... no idea how - but I feel that it doesn't QUIET work as well as it did before (takes a little longer to lock but still around 10 seconds) and the locator on google maps seems to drift a LITTLE where as before it would be perfection no drifting no nothing.
Does this rom use something else or some change in the conf files to supposedly make the GPS "better" but actually makes it worse!!?? lol
Being a techy myself and constantly plying with tech from waaaayyyy back this really frustrated me as clearly it cant be a hardware issue since it works on one ROM but not on stock (unless as I said the infamous ROM utilises a different method to lock GPS... which is NOT better and I don't like btw)
I sent the phone into O2 for repairs and since the knox and counters were tripped they sent back unrepaired stating they cant fix as the engineers found there had been "unauthorised rework" done on it
it has to be software right!!!???? but if that was true.... the stock ROM SHOULD work.... but they ALLL don't.. makes NO sense.
If anyone has any suggestions or input at all I would greatly appreciate.. potentially more!!
I would like to figure this one out too I'm on the Verizon note 3 SM-N900V stock 4.4.2 and the GPS sucks! It was perfect on 4.3 so I know it is definitely a software issue. This is the best phone I've ever had and the worst GPS. Hope we can find a fix because I rely on Google Maps a lot.

I had issues with my gps not locking after a rom update, I fixed it by downloading gps test from play store and clearing "agps data" in settings.
Give it a go it worked for me. Good luck

Did you a factory reset?

No. Just a reboot after I had used the app. As I said my gps would never lock even outside but after using g the app it's quick to lock. I got the tip from a forum but may not help you.

but for me.. not just GPS sucks... gps does not work categorically anytime ever lol... ONLNY on that infamous ROM I told you about..
hopefully otherwise ill have to do an insurance job on it! lol I definitely agree.... best phone ive ever had... did have the best GPS.. but I feel I may have done something to GPS chip whilst undervolting... but I say that then I remember... but no.. the GPS still works on that particular rom so it cant be that the GPS chip is fried... unless... like I said, that infamous ROM makes the GPS work in a different way.. I just don't know enough about it.... what I do know is that it DOES NOT make sense! lol

perhaps I didn't explain myself... its not because of the ROM update.... the GPS and everything was working to perfection on 4.3 and 4.4.2... it only stopped once id flashed the infamous ROM and then back tot he stock 4.4.2 roms.... now the only way to get GPS working is by flashing and using the infamous ROM
many thanks for your input though dude much appreciated

my friend.. all I can say is... lol... factory reset... lol.... umm yes... I did one....2....3..4,5,6,7,8,9 etc of those followed by 5,6,7,8 different stock roms etc (as stated in my original post)
so yeah... did that.. doesn't work
thanks for your suggestion though kind sir!!
What happened here is the same thing that happens when everyone installs the s5 port and when they revert to their stock rom they f*** up their GPS, since they initially installed a wrong firmware for their phone. Easiest way to solve this is to install that infamous ROM again and turn on your GPS. Then in recovery dirty flash stock note 3 rom (dirty flash... i mean don't do any wipes what so ever) and reboot. You might be able to boot it or basically go into bootloop. Then afterwhich do a factory reset in recovery again. Once booted up you should have your GPS back. There is another method here about flashing n9005 wifi/nfc and stuff files. I just can't find it. But do a search it will come out.
try this
go to recovery
full wipe ..(partition system , data, cache ) ..system partition needs to be wiped
if you are using philz then do a new rom wipe which also wipes system partition
reboot to download mode and odin flash stock samsung note 3 rom ( do it twice to make it 200% sure ..lol)
download gps status and reset ur agps data and download new data from the app
And apparently service centers have to prove that your rooting/flashing 'broke' the phone.
Maybe a grey area but apparently European legislation says so?
So threaten O2 with this?
Try GPS Status and in tools check/update agps.

sounds good.. but one thing... to flash stock roms I use odin... that's not a recovery flash.... what do you mean exactly? are you able to obtain and flash stock ROMS via recovery in zip form instead of .tar via odin now?

Enter root folder and open up etc>gps.conf using text editor and change LPP_PROFILE to 3 instead of 0.
