Vs980 where to go from here? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I finally decided to drop my beloved galaxy nexus. The N5 seemed like the next phone of my dreams but couldn't stand the thought of losing my unlimited plan so G2 seemed like the next logical choice. I have been reading as much as I can and still having a hard time wrapping my head around things. Here is where I am at:
Bought phone from swappa appeared to be in new condition as advertised with plastic still on the phone.
Not sure if the phone was updated ota by the seller but the software and baseband were 12b out the box not rooted.
I rooted successfully with latest I0root method.
Installed loki patched twrp 2.6.3.3 successfully via freegee method. Full nand backup of rooted stock. Backed up imie with freegee and imie and other partitions via flashable zip method.
So where do I go from here? Is it safe to flash any VS980 rom from this point?

Bump for this? Anyone have an answer?

Yes you should be good to go from that point forward.

I have yet to install a custom rom or I could let you know. I have however upgraded to philz recovery and successfully installed dorimanx kernels. Got a little busy messing with exposed modules as well. I wanted to make sure I have all my essentials backed up before messing with roms and have the appropriate files and drivers working in case something goes wrong. I tried to install malladus yesterday and the install failed but I want to say the download was bad as it took forever. I had no issues with restore. I'll report back if I have any luck.

If you want some KitKat love, try out Mahdi ROM with the latest furnace kernel. Very very stable on my vs980.
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk

You've bought the right device, aside from some unreleased phone of course. I too came from the gnex and I love this thing. Go install some AOSP ROM and it will be like you never left the gnex. (Although admittedly not as stable YET). With KK just being released by LG, all roms should get better. Anyways, enjoy a camera that works all the time not just when it is super bright and a battery that is equal to 3x of the galaxy nexus.

Thanks for the input. I installed AICP latest ROM last night with no issues. Feels amazing with no scroll lag compared to stock. Only thing I miss is knock off but hey you can't have it all. Gonna give furnace a go later.

I thought Mahdi came with knock on?

question about update

just picked up the g2 but theres an update do i take it then root it.or does this update break root
Update then root or you'll run in to issues.
Sent from my LG-D803 using Tapatalk
Agreed. And be sure to read the root guide very carefully as there are some nuances with rooting and flashing custom recoveries right now.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
+3.....take update, then root
well **** I rooted yesterday without taking that update. everything went fine too. currently running Malladus.
what are the issues you run into rooting without taking the update?

If you are running a custom ROM then you are good to go already. Malladus includes the update. The issue comes from taking the update after rooting, or especially after flashing a custom recovery.

Several reports say taking the update after root/recovery causes a recovery bootloop....but not taking it shouldn't affect your current rom.

Standard recovery image.

I flashed twrp on my Verizon LGG2. I was just wondering, since I have to have the standard recovery to get OTA updates(hopefully next one is Kit Kat), does anyone know where I can find it for my phone?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 2
You will get kitkat much faster from the developers than you will an ota
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
Good to know, but doesn't answer my question.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 2
Not sure, but I was wondering about this also. I think I'm just going to go back to stock when we get 4.4.

load the factory image using the LG tool. this will put you back to original stock, of course it will wipe your phone.
just an FYI, taking an OTA could possibly remove the ability to root your phone in the future. SO make sure that is really what you want.
I also have a similar question involving CWM. At the moment I have TWRP as my recovery (used flashify to install it), however I would prefer to use CWM. If I flash CWM via flashify, will it replace TWRP?

Awesome, thanks. I'm new to the LG phones (been on moto for the last few years) and just wanted to make sure

So is there any way to get standard recovery without having to reflash the entire stock rom?

Flashify okay now?

I'm getting my G2 on Monday. A month or two ago I read these forums religiously when I was trying to decide what to upgrade to it was highly recommend not to use flashify to install TWRP. Now Im reading a lot about people using flashify. Has something changed? Has the common consensus changed? Thanks for any input.

I actually have not heard anything bad about using flashify to install TWRP. I did this and everything went smoothly

Used it for CWM. Everything else I do through CWM.
I can't remember exactly what the issue was. Something happening after the fact. It was removed from options in the twrp guide. Maybe that was with an older version of twrp

I actually used flashify to install TWRP on my At&t D800. I downloaded the .img and flashed recovery through flashify. Although you NEED root AND busybox installed. This method worked fine for me.

Where did you downloaded TWRP img & what is the version of your G2 ? Would like to try it if it is fine. Thanks.
If you don't want any problems or are timid and scared of recovery hard flash, do as citytrader suggests. It is very easy. Some people, like me, can be lazy and purposely risky with certain things and go the easy, tinkering, and sometimes damaging route. ;]

How is using flashify dangerous?

One simple wrong line of code, something not playing well, no recovery. How isn't it besides pushing actual legit perfect line yourself.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately my version, d802b, doesn't supported.
Done it twice. Both before and after OTA. No problems either time. (Second time was after a brick rescue due to my incompetence.)

Yea no problems here. Rooted from my PC, then downloaded Flashify and installed custom recovery.

Same here. Used flashy to install twrp then flashed cleanrom on my phone. Works perfect.

4.4 Stock Kernel Question?

Is the stock kernel available for Kitkat? I thought about trying another kernel but hat the thought of having to restore a backup or fish the factory image again. I am running stock rooted Kitkat
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Its the wrong section mate. But here is the stock one. I made a flashable zip. Should work.
Sorry man. Thank you though. I didn't pay enough attention. Hopefully a mod can move this.

The above link works just fine, but in adition I would recomend you to check Nexus Root Toolkit, from our member WugFresh. It has you covered in pretty much anything you can do with your nexus device regarding flashing, restoring, backuping , etc...

Flashing recovery and rom on VZW 12b

Little bit of info on where I'm at at the moment. I have the VZW G2 and took the update to 12b before I rooted the phone. Rooted about a week ago without any hiccups but now I want to flash a recovery and then a rom--most likely http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559920 this rom or any other very stable AOSP based roms. I've been researching for a while now and have seen multiple instances of people deleting things and messing up their phone big time. This is a pretty expensive device and I really don't want it to become a paperweight so I want to be as thorough as possible.
For the recovery, I've seen a couple different methods for twrp and cwm. I'd like to use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2587296 one but I'm stuck with the instructions. This method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 gives excellent instructions but I am unsure if it is compatible with the 12b version. Can anyone that has successfully flashed TWRP using the second method chime in? Or if you've used the first method on 12b, explain how exactly I would flash twrp with it?
As for the rom, it gives excellent instructions but I want to be 100% positive that I won't brick my phone. What shouldn't I do when flashing this rom? I saw another thread that someone wiped the system before he was going to flash the rom and that wiped his rom too resulting in him bricking his phone. Any help or tips would be excellent. I'm very new to all this and really want to get into flashing and trying out all these great roms. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
Use freegee from the play store to flash twrp... all kk roms have bugs to some extent as this point.

Would you recommend freegee over flashify?
I can only speak for freegee. Haven't used any other method yet for flashing recovery... freegee has worked well for me and seems to be the most recommended.
