[Q] Power cable - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I seem to have lost my power cable for my S4. I just need to know if I can replace it as I have heard that using different cables can cause problems
Any info would be appreciated

Hi,
i think maybe a problem if you use Odin.
If it's just for charge or transfer file, no problem with another microUSB cable
But wait for a recommendation of the xda experts

There are two kinds of usb cables for our phones, one ONLY CHARGES and
the other does both data transfers from phone to computer as well as charging.
The one which does both is also good for Odin and Kies.
Be sure to get one which specifically states "charging & data" in it's description.
Good luck!

I read somewhere in XDA, there was an info that the Quick charge feature of S4 is only work when using combination of genuine S4 adapter and S4 power cable. If you use another cable, it will not work.

No, all Samsung chargers have the data pins bridge only in the charger USB output (or in the cable if it is fixed to the charger). Anyway, if the cable has a big impedance (bad quality), it could decrease the provided current.

Ok guys thanks for the replies
So I go for a cable that states Data + Charge, and I can still use with Odin and Kies etc
Thanks

USB charging

I've noticed when I have my tablet plugged into my computer via USB it doesn't appear to be charging. The battery icon is showing a red lightning bolt. This is different than when I have my tab plugged into a wall socket.
Working as intended or..?
Your PC USB port can't supply enough juice (500ma max) compare to your wall socket (>2000ma) to charge while power the tab. Turn the tab off and your will get some charge off the USB port.

It's been charging my tab for about a month now with no problems at all, but I'm not here to argue, if you feel that you know more than I do. I've charged the tablet using that adapter from my laptop, PC, and Energizer XP4001 Power Pack.
You might also search the forums, as I'm not the only one to recommend and use this item.

Have also use this USB charger Adapter Cable For Samsung GALAXY Tab p1000. Works great.

Ahh thanks! Was wondering why it wouldn't charge via my USB port.
(In fact using my Samsung Focus USB adapter for the outlet doesn't seem to work either... I need to use only the Samsung Tab USB adapter)

The focus charger is rated only about 700ma (same exact one as Captivate/SGS), marginablly better than PC USB. GT 10.1 has a rather large battery and hence it requires much larger charge current. You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?

Is that through the orginal AC adapter or through PC USB?
Turning off the tablet and charging it via USB works, but it takes forever!

And you are not the only one who is waiting twice as long before his tab is fully charged. Then we can open a topic "Why does it take so long before my tab is charged?" As foxbat stated: You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?
So if I say your adapter doesn't work its just as accurate as your answer it does work.

Hey, I'm not here to argue with you. I'm just an idiot.
Go about your business, and don't listen. I'm ok with that.
First of all, not all USB ports are equal.
On many modern PCs, the USB ports can deliver more than 500mA over USB if required. This is definitely true for pretty much all Macs since 2007, and quite a few mainboards from other manufacturers (see this article for some background).
Secondly, I've had one of these adaptors for quite a while now, and have used it regularly to charge my Galaxy Tab 7" which uses exactly the same power supply and cables as the GT 10.1. I can categorically state that when using this adaptor, it the GT7 does charge from a Macbook Air and a 5000mAh external battery that has a 1A output USB port labelled for an iPad.
Whilst it might not be as quick as the wall charger, it is definitely much faster than attempting to charge the GT7 from the same devices without the adaptor, even if the device is in use.
I've not formally tried to charge my GT10.1 with it yet, but I did check to see if the "not-charging" indicator went away (which it did), so I rather presume it will work much like the GT7.
Regards,
Dave

You don't need to embarrass yourself by saying you're an idiot, It's very childish and the second time you mention I'm supposed to be smarter then you. I'm sorry you take this so personally.
i just use the supplied cable and it charges via usb on my computer. it shows not charging, but it basically trickle charges when the tab is both on and off

My SGS2 wont charge or connect to laptop

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place.
Up until recently everything was working fine.
But now my phone wont charge when I connect it to a mains charger. I've tried using various chargers but no joy. Also it wouldn't connect to my laptop. Again I've tried various usb cables. The only way I'm able to charge it is using my samsung docking station.
I've tried it using both my official samsung battery and a third party one I have but no joy.
Anyone had similar problems?
ps. I have kies installed, although it would only recognize my phone the odd time.

Dell Venue Pro Charging issue and not recognized on pc

I recently bought a used dell venue pro unlocked 32GB version. I see few issues, hope some one can help me with the resolution.
Phone charges only when it almost discharged or dead.
If I remove the phone in the middle of charging, it does not continue to charge.
Once charged, battery discharges very quickly.
Zune does not recognize the phone. I am able to enter download mode, but not able to update any software.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the cable you are using the one that was acquired with the unit? Does the cable you are using to connect work as a sync/data cable with other phones? There are cables out there that are just charging only as they short out the data pins and/or ground the data lines. if you can lay you hands on an OEM Dell or an OEM Nokia Data Cable you should be able to sync with Zune, unless the data pins on the phone are bad or shorted out on the handset.
The cable bundled with the VP is a standard microUSB cable.
The pins are supposed to be shorted on the charger itself, shorting the pins on the cable itself isnt the right thing to do.
That said if your cable can be used to connect any other microUSB device, it should work (as far as the cable is concerned).
I do not have the original cable or charger ..I am using the cable and charger that I got with Nokia Lumia 710..I am able to sync and charge my Nokia phone perfectly..
It it is a port problem then I would expect it not to charge even once ?

Charging VIA USB is POSSIBLE (MZ601)

After a certain person (on XDA) forcing me to prove that charging VIA USB is possible, I suppose I should share with all of you guys as well. I have a MZ601, so it's an original XOOM (you don't say right? hahaha), a few weeks ago I brought a car charger that has multi-tip, so it means you can swap out the adapter and such. I tested it on my XOOM and it worked, so I came to the conclusion that the XOOM official charger was 5V but in reality when I was chatting to solarnz about it, he mentions it was a 12V and to my surprise it was. Anyways the point is if you can convert or buy an adapter pin to usb for the XOOM it is possible to use any source of USB power to charge the XOOM.
Here are some pictures so you get the idea:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6lqlaxoef1xcu6l/2012-09-25 10.19.09.jpg
So there, I hope you guys can find it useful and not flame me like that certain someone.
Edit:
I should also add, charging via USB is pointless and slow only for if you really need to. Unless you got an adapter that outputs 1.0A + it probably be faster than standard usb, but what's the point if you got your original charger?
Always good to have options.

very interesting post, i have a car charger but not multi pin...didnt know that it can charge through pc usb
Thats really good to hear, as the pin is fragile and i hate it. I have an old samsung tablet usb charger and to my surprise it did work.
Where can I find these adapters?
I've always been sure that plugging the xoom to a usb 5v 1A+ charger would have worked but couldnt find a bloody adapter that fits that unique pin
You can not charge xoom by usb.
Usb is not connected to the xoom battery.
Stop the question
That's not exactly charging via USB.... that's using a power tip adaptor to charge FROM a USB power source.
This is not exactly news.

Rats, got me all excited, even tried a couple of my usb chargers (didn't work of course).
Should change the thread title to: Charging VIA USB is ** NOT ** POSSIBLE (MZ601)
The charger tip is not that unique actually it's the same size as the NOKIA N71 mobile

Thanks for this info. Now I know we are certainly able to charge our xoom via USB. Eventhough it's very slow, but always good to have this option.

I no longer have my Xoom, but if I remember correctly, the Motorola dock for it charges via USB... the standard plug goes into the dock, but where the Xoom sits, there is only HDMI male and USB male connectors.
FWIW: My mother now has my old Xoom and she accidentally bent the pin inside the Xoom where the normal charger goes. The only thing that will work now is the dock to charge it until the port can be fixed.

That's correct. Just checked what you call the "pogo pins" on my OEM dock and they are at 12VDC. Contrary to the title of OP, I don't think it's possible to charge via USB.

S3 Neo recognize only samsung cables

Hi, I have a little problem and I wonder if somebody can help me.
When I connect my phone to the charger or to the pc with a samsung cable, like it's own cable, it charges with no problems.
The problem is that when I try to charge it with other cables it doesn't recognize the cable at all, like if the cable isn't plugged in.
Can somebody help me with this annoying problem?

Strange. Although Samsung supplies good quality cables, other vendor cables are also good. They can be easily available for 3-5$ or 200₹ problem which you are talking about comes in place when the cable is of the most degraded quality; or at least check the connections if they were loosened up!!

Unfortunately it isn't a cable problem, I tried the same cable with another s3 neo and it works perfectly, also I'm not sure it is a connector problem because other Samsung cables works too.
I'm stuck in this dilemma and I don't know what I have to do.
