does otg y cable works with data card and nexus 4??
or is there any way to connect 3g data card to my nexus 4
if there's no way to connect directly can I reverse tether (connecting data card to laptop)?
Best solution for me is to get a data sim and a Wi-Fi 3g router and make a small hotspot.
In this way you connect your nexus wirelessly and you save also the battery, as the Wi-Fi uses much less battery then 3g.
Also, one other benefit is that you can connect as many devices add you want.

Anyone know if we'll be able to connect the Nexus 7 to our phones like a Galaxy Nexus through Bluetooth for data something Akin to iPhone to iPad? WiFi HotSpot is a huge battery killer.
I would say yes. When I get N7 I'll check it out.
Wi-fi direct should work for file transfers
BT tethering works no problem.
Has anyone tried connecting the nexus 4 as a wifi hotspot? My phone can load webpages like google, facebook, XDA really fast. But when I have my laptop connected through portable hotspot I can't even get google.com to open up. Sometimes it does but very very slowly, is this normal for wifi hotspots or is it just something with my connection settings?
My Wi-Fi Hotspot from Nexus 4 works perfectly when I connect my Nexus 7, Playbook, and Galaxy Nexus.
WiFi hot spot worked for me also

Hmm i tried it with my playbook too, it works but same issue its much slower then what the phone can accomplish!
It's normal for it to be slower (just consider that all requests need to be routed from your laptop, to your phone via WiFi, then to the cell service) but it certainly should be working without issue. Are you using the built-in WiFi hotspot feature? And what carrier?
hello
im thinking to buy a nexus 10 but i want to know if you have tried this app PPP Widget
or any other way to connect a usb 3g dongle like this app with the nexus 7
thank you
for those who ask why dont share the internet connection using an android phone the answer is that my cell phone carrier doesnt have the best 3g speeds and signal . so right now im paying an internet service using a 3g dongle with my laptop.
thank you for your advice and knowledge

Well the 3g type with Built in wifi hotspot are only taking power through the usb connection so should work fine ... but 3g dongle with hot spot and own battery like Huawei E586 dont need to be plugged in to phone ....
Both methods are no different to taking a data connection from another phone via a wifi hotspot.

This.
It's somewhat mean to say it like that but I'll translate it.
I'm using a HUAWEI E355 with OTG cable and it works.

Although i realise a hotspot would work, i'd rather have a dongle i could plug in and it would work through the USB connection.
I imagine the battery drain from powering the 3G dongle AND using wifi would drain more then if i'd just use USB.

I have a Huawei E586 HSDPA+ 3G MIFI Hotspot coming in post, it connects via USB also. I will test if USB connection works on Note2.
For the last few days I've been using a Note2 throught hotspot on Note1 (unlimited data sim in note1, talk & text plan sim in note2) the battery drain from WIFI on note2 is not high.
This unit has its own battery.
Hi all,
looks like you can connect to 3G networks over HUAWEI E355 modem?
I have few questions and hope you can give me hand here...
1. are your nexus rooted?
2. what ROM u use? stock or custom? if custom which one?
3.
I have a friend here, with nexus 10 wifi only and trying to get a 3G connection, got the HUAWEI E-173u modem + otg cable but its stock ROM and it doesnt show any "mobile networks" in settings, wonder if it is possible to use 3G net on these wifi nexus at all?
thanks!

Hi,
Here is how I was able to use 3G dongle via a USB OTG cable on my nexus 10 running android 4.2.2. Unfortunately till now 4.3 doesn't support this
First Root your Nexus 10 .(Fantastic thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001868
Then install PPP Widget
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget&hl=en
Then follow this thread (Read carefully)
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modes...php?f=6&t=1113
Copy the driver files on PPP widget ----> [sdcard]/pppwidget/lib (use file explorer like to search the folder --->> https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...roid.pop&hl=en)
Add the pppwidget home screen (Remember this is a widget ,not an App)
Plug in the 3G Dongle using a OTG cable ,and put the correct APN ..........
And press the connect button.......
You have 3g connection on nexus 10
All above are works and copyright of respective owners.I just put the links here....

Any idea why 4.3 do not support it ?
I got me a dongle and nexus 10 the same time knowing that I will want 3G connection. but when trying my dongle nothing happened and the version of my table was 4.3.
So I am quite confused why it would be in one version but not the next.

Activating portable wifi hotspot will turn off your wifi..........Have you tried with a sim in as the hotspot utilizes your data conection as a wifi hotspot. So I am pretty sure you need the sim inserted??
Oh I thought WiFi tethering uses your WiFi not data connection I have a 2 gig data connection and I don't want to waste it. I an going to try with sim card.
Edit: sim card inside but turns off WiFi and turns on 4G LTE

Hi, I've been using one of these big, ugly dual band wall plug wifi repeater/travel router for a while. It sometimes feels like it has a little too much on it's plate and needs to be rebooted/reconfigured all the time.
I recently got a Nexus 6p, and still have a perfectly working Nexus 5. I feel bad about it not being used, since it's such a great device. Then I realized....maybe I can use it as a wifi repeater! There wasn't anything in the default settings menu to create a hotspot AND remain connected to another hotspot on the Nexus 5. I did try it in tethering mode, and WOW the N5 performed much better than the crappy wall plug repeater. The only problem is getting it to create the wifi network....I've tried the fqrouter2 ap but it ends up giving errors, probably because it doesn't support the newer OS version.
Is there a way, with ap or script that I can make the phone connect to a 5ghz network and say, create a 2.4ghz hotspot?
What about tethering to ethernet? I was able to tether the wifi to usb with amazing results....maybe use an adaptor to get it to pass internet to an external router?
Any thoughts?:silly:
As a novice, my initial thought is that if there is only one wifi radio inside the Nexus 5 it can only either connect to wifi or broadcast, but not both. Asfor using ethernet, I can't see why not, using a usb otg cable, and then connecting a usb to ethernet adapter, and finally feeding that ethernet cable to whatever you wish, but I have not tested such so may the odds be ever in your favor
I've seen it done using the fqrouter app, just not on the N5. I've done similar stuff with computers running windows and linux as well. It may have one radio, but that radio has 2 bands. Maybe one band broadcasts a hotspot and the other talks to the main router? You are right though, having just one radio makes it a pain whether it's possible or not.
