Well the 3g type with Built in wifi hotspot are only taking power through the usb connection so should work fine ... but 3g dongle with hot spot and own battery like Huawei E586 dont need to be plugged in to phone ....
Both methods are no different to taking a data connection from another phone via a wifi hotspot.

This.
It's somewhat mean to say it like that but I'll translate it.
I'm using a HUAWEI E355 with OTG cable and it works.

Although i realise a hotspot would work, i'd rather have a dongle i could plug in and it would work through the USB connection.
I imagine the battery drain from powering the 3G dongle AND using wifi would drain more then if i'd just use USB.

I have a Huawei E586 HSDPA+ 3G MIFI Hotspot coming in post, it connects via USB also. I will test if USB connection works on Note2.
For the last few days I've been using a Note2 throught hotspot on Note1 (unlimited data sim in note1, talk & text plan sim in note2) the battery drain from WIFI on note2 is not high.
This unit has its own battery.

Hi all,
looks like you can connect to 3G networks over HUAWEI E355 modem?
I have few questions and hope you can give me hand here...
1. are your nexus rooted?
2. what ROM u use? stock or custom? if custom which one?
3.
I have a friend here, with nexus 10 wifi only and trying to get a 3G connection, got the HUAWEI E-173u modem + otg cable but its stock ROM and it doesnt show any "mobile networks" in settings, wonder if it is possible to use 3G net on these wifi nexus at all?
thanks!

Hi,
Here is how I was able to use 3G dongle via a USB OTG cable on my nexus 10 running android 4.2.2. Unfortunately till now 4.3 doesn't support this
First Root your Nexus 10 .(Fantastic thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001868
Then install PPP Widget
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget&hl=en
Then follow this thread (Read carefully)
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modes...php?f=6&t=1113
Copy the driver files on PPP widget ----> [sdcard]/pppwidget/lib (use file explorer like to search the folder --->> https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...roid.pop&hl=en)
Add the pppwidget home screen (Remember this is a widget ,not an App)
Plug in the 3G Dongle using a OTG cable ,and put the correct APN ..........
And press the connect button.......
You have 3g connection on nexus 10
All above are works and copyright of respective owners.I just put the links here....

Any idea why 4.3 do not support it ?
I got me a dongle and nexus 10 the same time knowing that I will want 3G connection. but when trying my dongle nothing happened and the version of my table was 4.3.
So I am quite confused why it would be in one version but not the next.

USB Tether to SGS2

I have been tethering my SGS2 (AT&T) with my laptop via USB with no problem using the SGS2 for data connection. I finally got a USB adaptor for my GT 10. It sees my SGS2 and says "High Powered USB Device Connected, Cannot connect to this device. Connected device needs external power supply."
I haven't found any threads regarding GT10 usb tether. Is this not possible?
Not possible. Drivers would be required.
I didn't want to mess with rooting my device(s) to get bluetooth or wifi tether. I tried setting my SGS2 as wifi hot spot and it works perfectly. My SGS2 is unlocked.

Easiest solution, no idea why people would try to tether via USB.
I was wondering the other day though, whether it would work if someone had a 3G USB stick and connected it to SGT.
USB Cable will not make any difference to speed
Tethering via Cable will not make any noticeable difference to the speed. Because the phone uses 3G to connect to internet and it is already quite slow from the max speed that can be supported via WiFi.
We have sketchy internet access at my office due to location so I actually tether my PC via USB to my SGS2 sometimes. Just curious if the GT10 could do it. I am also curious if it will work with a 3G USB Stick.
what mode is the sgs2 in when you connect it? can you connect in usb debugging mode to see if it shows up as a high powered device then? i only have a vibrant so i don't know what your exact options are.
3G USB Stick requires you to install a driver before using it. And I doubt that Network operators out there have got a driver for Android!
It is unlikely to work. Let us know if you find something special
why don't you just use the wifi tethering in the settings? no root, no hardware, no fuss.

Tethering over wifi or bluetooth can Bea battery hog. USB lets you tether without killing your phone's battery.

Won't help because Tab will not provide power to the phone, phone will still discharge quickly because of constant data transfer.
Another option would be a USB 3G stick maybe.

[Q] 3g Dongle for the Nexus 7

Does anyone use one? Any ideas what one to use? Any suggestions?
Don't answer all at once!
Something like this will do. It broadcasts as WiFi so your Nexus will see it yet in essence it's a 3G dongle. Not sure about the price plans or whats available in your country of choice but thought I'd show you whats available.

can i use my huwavi ui53 3g dongle with google nexus 7 tab to connect internet?
hi
can i use my huwavi ui53 3g dongle with google nexus 7 tab to connect internet?
becoz i'm planning to buy this tab..but my area has not wifi...
pls help me...
One could get a MiFi router, where it's basically a 3G/4G dongle with WiFi capabilities in-box. Or get a WiFi 3G Router that is an adapter for existing 3G/4G dongles, like this:
http://usb3gvn.com/router-wifi-3g/tp-link-tl-wr703n.html
750k VND = 36.50 CAD/[moreorless] USD
I'm also interested to know if Android's USB host could support an internet stick...

Bluetooth pairs but won't connect

I have successfully paired my nexus 7 to my evo 3d and my HP laptop. However, it will not connect to either one. There is no connect option visible either. Both the laptop and my evo 3d connect fine to each other and other Bluetooth devices. Is my nexus 7 faulty or am I missing something?
Edit: ok it connects fine to my Bluetooth headphones, so why won't it connect to my phone or my laptop?

i used foxfi and pdanet to pair my nexus 7 to my sgs3 and tether my nexus 7!, maybe those 2 apps could help
Thank you. That does seem to allow me to tether. But why won't my tablet connect on its own though the Bluetooth setting?

Not sure if this helps, but I have Verizon and it seems that they block Bluetooth tethering while on 4G LTE. I could get my phone and nexus 7 to pair, but wouldn't connect. However when I switches my phone to 3G, my tablet and phone connected no problem. Its nice BC when they are connected your tablet automatically uses your phones internet. If I just want to use 3G, I go this route. When I want to connect them while my phone is on 4G LTE, I have to use foxfi/pdanet.
In other words connecting while the phone is on 4G seems to be blocked. Switch to 3G and see if that doesn't work to connect.
Hope this helps.

Clicking on the other device in bluetooth settings usually gets it to connect for me. If I walk away from my tablet with my phone I have to redo the process.

I have the same issue as you. It may be that our phone don't have the right BT Profile for "Internet Access".
Are there any other options? I've tried FoxFi and that didn't create the "Internet Access" profile either. I'm on a Samsung Stratosphere with 2.3.

I have also been trying to tether my new Nexus 7 with my old Xperia X10 mini. I can pair but not connect. I can't access my Bluetooth settings on my Nexus. I can't pass files vie Bump either. I can't get the wifi tether to the phone working either: My phone doesn't allow me to download Foxfi, my phone says PDAnet doesn't work on my version of Android. I bought the Nexus in the UK but I'm using it in Germany. My phone is with O2 which typically requires an additional €20 charge to tether. Any advice would be appreciated.
I think you folks are missing a setting?
Hi
Aside from pairing, on the device whose connection is being shared (i.e the phone), you need to goto settings-->More-->Tethering And Portable Hotspot, and make sure that 'bluetooth tethering' is selected.
This works on my Galaxy Note. 4.04 ICS
No 3rd party apps are required to do this. Note that Bluetooth PAN only came to android in 3.0. If your phone runs 2.3x or below, you'll need the software discussed elsewhere in this thread to make BT tethering work.
Whatever internet connection the phone has is shared, whether wifi or 3g
NB: Its a bit flakey! OK once connected, but requires BT to be cycled off/on on both ends...

Theres a wee bug in android where after a new pair, restart, or occasionally on bluetooth disconnections bluetooth tethering will become disabled on the host device.
Go to the device with the Internet Connection and (on ICS / JB) hit Settings -> More -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> Bluetooth tething and check it.
You'll have to redo this regularly but combined with an occasional bluetooth off/on unpair / repair this will work.
(Nexus 7 / Galaxy Nexus - both rooted stock)
Hi
If you don't have the screen below (or equiv) mentioned in my previous post, then you wont be able to tether without using 3rd party apps. I guess the BT PAN profile is missing where this option is not available.

Thanks for this. All was working fine between my UK (stock European with a few Vodafone apps) Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII) and Note 10.1 until I upgraded to 4.1.1 on my S3. It seems this option was added then or disabled by default. All working splendidly now, cheers.
Droid Razr Nexus 7 connection
All,
You can tether the 4G LTE on a nexus 7 you just have to enable bluetooth tetheriing in Setting > Tethering & Mobile Hotspot > Bluetooth tethering
Without doing this, it won't link via bluetooth tethering. As for laptop, you have to allow access point in your laptop in order to allow the Nexus 7 to fully connect to your laptop to share files.
Cheers!
This thread has the most similar problems that I have. By me the problem is opposite. I need to get internet connection on my phone (xperia U) and the only way is through tethering through my iphones hotspot. Bluetooth says paired but not connected and wifi hotspot isn't found in the list of wifi networks.
Bluetooth tethering worked fine on ICS but I downgraded to GB and now nothing. I can't install 3rd party apps yet because no internet on phone.
Is there no other option? Is it either GB, lag free phone but no tethering option or laggy ICS phone with tethering??

Use Android device as wi-fi hotspot to share PC internet connection.

Hi I have a PC connect via ethernet to the internet, I would like to connect my phone to the computer so I can broadcast my computers internet connection to my iPad for example. Don't want to use mobile data tethering thanks. I can use either a HTC Hero or Samsung GS2. Is this possible at all? any apps that will let me do this?
I'm not sure if it forces mobile data when hotspot is enabled.
If not, I'd connect the phone to the PC using internet pass through with mobile data disabled and hot spot enabled. I'm unsure if it will use your PC's internet when broadcasting though

Like a PCI card or it's built into all laptops built in the last ten years.
If I had a wireless card..I wouldnt even bother about getting a phone with "Internet Pass Through"
What I am asking is "A Desktop without a wifi card but has a wired internet connection needs to provide internet to a laptop"
What are we having with us? - A Phone with "Internet Pass Through" enabled
A Desktop (With no WIFI card)
A Laptop (With a WIFI card ofcourse)

Laptop would work. It has built-in Wi-Fi and probably a 10/100[/1000] ethernet port.

PC is WIRED with broadband connection...It is passed to the phone using Internet Pass Through...
Now THE GOLDEN QUESTION IS HOW TO BROADCAST THIS INTERNET(that is present in the phone through IPT) USING ANY HOTSPOT APP!
?
